Essential for the UNESCO-UIA's architectural education
In July 2002, UIA agreed to promote their criteria on Architectural Education, worldwide. Among various criteria, we can clearly find necessity of teaching the architectural programming in school. With understanding this situation, I can recommend this as the BEST TEXT BOOK among others in this field,
compulsory for students and educator.

A must Read!
Normally I don't read a lot of books outside of Science fiction and Romance. But I read this book when I was 15 and absolutely loved it. Now 10 years later I found the book when I was cleaning my basement. It is still a wonderful book. If you think that historical books are boring, think again. This book is exciting, with a hint of romance and a dash of voodoo to spice the whole book up. A must read if you are looking for a book in historical fiction to start out with.

All Hart
What a delightful, educational and entertaining read! As a hardcore non-fiction reading I am disinclined to pick up anything that smacks of fiction and the preamble of 'novel' will generally turn me off. But this little historical novel about Nancy Hart, a heroine of Mountain State Confederates, retells a story that may otherwise have been shuffled off into mythological obscurity. I am hardly a 'targeted reader' of Rebel Hart but I was completely absorbed in the story which, for rare occassion, honored the spirit, bravery and dedication of this young woman of history and her die-hard comrades during the War for Southern Independence. Thank you Jacqueline Shields and Edith Hemingway from a native of Nancy Hart's ole stompin' grounds.

Lays out the basics
This is a great text for laying out the basics of what the WTO actually means for environmental problem-solving in global politics. The introduction is clear cut and accessible. The intros to each of the separate case studies: tobacco control; the reformulated gasoline case; the beef hormones case; the shrimp-turtle case; and a hypothetical GMO case are concise and readable. The bibliographies are invaluable. As in all anthologies, some of the individual chapters are uneven. Wish I could afford this book!

A true gourmet's delight . . .
The minute you see this volume anywhere, buy it. (Unless, of course, it's a library book. In that case, just borrow it for a while.) Take it home, and after an aggravating day, pick it up and read THE PROOF OF THE PUDDING by Barbara Metzger. I guarantee you'll laugh out loud as you read about the ingenious young widow who tries to find a husband for her sister--only to win one for herself, instead.

On the other hand, if you're already too buoyant, and want to shed a few tears, Patricia Rice will oblige with THE CHRISTMAS GOOSE. Men go off to war seldom considering the woman they leave behind, and if you mix in a curmudgeonly father who ignores his now-widowed daughter, you have the ingredients for a real tear-prompting tale.

If you've ever all-of-a-sudden come to realize something that had been lurking in the recesses of your mind, you'll identify immediately with the young duke in Edith Layton's THE GINGERBREAD MAN. Awakened every morning by a scented memory, he discovers his heart's desire practically under his nose. You'll feel wonderful all day after this delight.

Have you ever wondered what on earth was a Syllabub? Wonder no more. In this instance, it, too, is a memory-maker as Sandra Heath whips up the tangled remnants of a marriage into a new concoction, and straightens them out to everyone's satisfaction in SOPHIE'S SYLLABUB.

And finally, Mary Balogh utilizes THE WASSAIL BOWL as a receptacle for love, hope and still more tears--all the things you need, in order to have a wonderful Holiday. Be sure to have a good one--and don't blame the reviewer for the calories you'll find in this delicious book--along with a related recipe from each author.

A Christmas delight and keeper - superior efforts
I am working my way through a little horde of Regency Christmas anthologies, savouring them one at a time. I picked this one up whilst on holiday recently and just read it; what a pleasure it was! I don't ordinarly seek out short stories as a matter of course but I am very fond of this particular little mini sub-genre. Three of the contributions stood out for me.

"The Rake's Christmas" by Edith Layton is the poignant story of a young man, back from the Peninsular wars, saddened and a little self loathing, who throws himself into some half-hearted rakery in order to put the wars behind him. He is taken up by a truly accomplished rake, Lord Shelton. During a Christmas house party, the elder rake plays deus ex machina to young Ian, Viscount Hunt in order to bring him together with Miss Eve Thompkins. Eve is the daughter Shelton never had - the offspring of his true life-long secret and unrequited love. So, he stands in an almost fatherly way over Hunt, helping him to overcome his sombre loneliness and sad boyhood in making a match for him and Eve. Edith Layton is a favourite of mine and she packs a lot of emotion into just a few short pages.

Jo Beverley is a writer whose books I have been collecting with the aim of indulging myself. Why she and Layton and Balogh are not published in the UK is beyone my comprehension - such a shame! I was delighted with her contribution to this anthology. "A Mummer's Play" is the story of Col "Lucky Jack" Beaufort, by default the new Duke of Cranmoore. Justina Travers lost her fiance in the Peninsula when he was under the command of his close friend, Jack. Justina has some reason to suspect that Cranmoore may have been a traitor and, therefore, the cause of her fiance's death. She insinuates herself into Jack's first Christmas house party as the new duke by hiding herself amongst the mummers who come to perform. Her aim is to expose him as a traitor and murderer. The story takes place during the course of just one evening and, in just a few intense, emotional pages, Jo Beverley brings an almost unbearably high degree of tension and emotion as these two lonely, hurt but passionate people find an extraordinary and unexpected love and mutual redemption. Simply excellent.

Mary Balogh's contribution is, as always, as near to perfection as you can get. Hers is the story of three young orphaned children whose wastrel parents largely ignored them. Their maternal uncle, Viscount Morsey, and paternal aunt, Lady Carlyle, reluctantly leave London to come to the depths of the countryside to "do their duty" and make some half-hearted provision for their upbringing. It emerges that the two adults were once engaged but huge family problems, anger and recriminations tore them apart. The story is largely told through the eyes of the children and the theme of the story, as Lady Carlyle discovers, is that Christmas is about birth, parenthood, love, hope and commitment. In the context of this very brief piece, all five players find themselves turned into a loving family. Mary Balogh is pure magic. She writes such poignant, moving and emotional stories which are refined to pure gold. Wonderful.

Do find yourself a second hand copy of this anthology; reading it is simply a pleasure worth the effort.

Tailored to students in business and management.
As someone who works privately with dissertation students, I recommend this book. When students in the business and management contact me, I recommend that they use this book as reference. The authors anticipate and answer many of the questions that students have about dissertations in business and management.

Setting our Faces toward Jerusalem
Setting our Faces toward Jerusalem
book review of
Edith Stein: Trusting God's Purpose

by Sister Fran Gangloff, OSF

During the week of September 11, 2001, the day of the four suicide airplane hijackings and terrorist attacks on the United States, I received in the mail a review copy of - Edith Stein: Trusting God's Purpose - in the series of 'a retreat with' published by St. Anthony Messenger Press, 2001. The book is authored by Patricia L. Macks, the 74 page, softcover book (ISBN - 086716 - 387 - 9)

The title of Day One struck me immediately - 'Setting our faces toward Jerusalem.' For it seems to me that our whole country and most of the world and each one of us are called by the tragic events to face the suffering with courage and determination, to set out faces steadily like flint as Jesus did toward the Holy City - where suffering and death encompass the seekers of truth and peace.

Edith faced her finest moment, knowing full what it meant, when Nazi soldiers arrested her at the Carmel at Echt in Holland. She said to her sister (blood sister and companion in the Carmel convent) - 'Come Rosa, let us go to die for our people.'

The seven day retreat moves through the themes of - Jerusalem, Relationship, Empathy, Prayer, Eucharist, Sabbath, and Cross - using Jewish and Christian reference points in Edith's life and writings as a Jewish woman, intellectual scholar, convert to Catholicism, and Carmelite nun. Edith, AKA Sister Benedicta, victim of the 1940's Holocaust and recently canonized saint of the Catholic Church, becomes in this book a wonderful mentor and guide for our own difficult times.

A retreat with Edith deepens respect for the religious rights and beliefs of all persons. When Edith, in her final days, told others - 'we are traveling east' - she knew it was toward a death camp. Her words also hold a larger meaning - we are traveling from the seen reality to unseen truth where God may be found - west or east. We set our faces toward Jerusalem.

The book lists eight suggestions for Deepening Your Acquaintance with Edith. Having read and studied them all, I strongly agree and highly recommend these choices. I also highly recommend this Edith Stein retreat book.

Jewish faith and Christian faith were changed forever in the aftermath of the Holocaust. We are still feeling its effects 60 years later. All religious faiths in America - Islamic, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, and all the others - are deeply changed forever and challenged by the events of 9 - 11 and its aftermath. This book - used as retreat or personal meditation and prayer - strengthens us to set our faces like flint, like Jesus, toward the pain of these changes and challenges. We set our faces toward Jerusalem.

One of the Source Documents on the Science of the Cards
This is the book that first introduced me to the science of the cards. I was at a friend's house in 1987 when she handed me this book and asked me to look up my card and read about myself. She wanted to know my impression of what it said. I read the short chapter on my birth card and was amazed at how accurate it was. It wasn't very flattering but it was indeed an accurate description of the major issues and personality traits that are mine. What amazed me even more was that there are eight different birthdays that all have the same card as mine. As an astrologer I couldn't imagine how this could actually work. But I had to admit that it pegged me. Now, after writing my own books on this ancient and amazing system, I still recommend this book to those who are studying this system. The language is a bit outdated but the information is still very pertinent. It gives a fairly detailed description of each of the 52 birth cards, a chart for looking up your card and the tools to actually do yearly progressions, though the information on this aspect is very sketchy. The main benefit of this book is the birth card descriptions which reveal a lot of valuable information about our life patterns. This book appears to be the second book ever published on this system. It was published in the early forties and the two authors have since passed away. Florence Campbell, one of the authors, also published one of the all time best books on numerology, Your Days Are Numbered.
