Easy to understand!!
After having my first surgery for glaucoma at age 19, I wanted more information about the disease. Every other book I have read has been confusing and complex. Edith Marks provides useful information that non-medics can understand. All of my questions were finally answered.

A great book - read this!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in multiple personality disorder, art therapy, puppetry, psychiatry, object relations theory, story telling or mental illness in general. Through Jenny's story Gerity simultaneously gives a fascinating accurate account of patient care in a mental health facility while also educating the reader about the various psychological theories that staff utilize for treatment. This book was a pleasure to read and would be enjoyable for everyone but I think it should be mandatory reading for anyone who works with the mentally ill population.

Killoran does it again.
As with her earlier deft readings, Killoran has done it again, this time with THE CRITICAL RECEPTION OF EDITH WHARTON. We learn a great deal about the author, including what her contemporaries thought of her, and how critics have viewed her throughout the decades since her early publications. Killoran does not shy away from controversial ground, showing the illogic of those who see Wharton as a disciple of Henry James, and, even more intriguing, takes up the "feminist takeover of Edith Wharton". Killoran is not intemperate: with an exhaustive and respectful view of feminist scholarship, Killoran shows that there are indeed other views, ones that may be more fruitful for a deep understanding of the author's genius. Of particular interest is Killoran's unconventional reading of ETHAN FROME, and her detail of all the contradictory things that critics have had to say over the years.

Whether you agree or disagree with Killoran, you will come away with a clear and detailed view of Wharton's standing among various critics, her shifting place in the American literary canon, and a deep appreciation for the many reasons this outstanding writer has appealed and continues to appeal to her readership. Bravo, Professor Killoran.

A misleading title of a foreign policy treasure
Why did Woodrow Wilson land troops at Veracruz? The story of murder, mayhem, revolution, and international intrigue unfolds in the compelling diary of a career diplomat's wife, Edith O'Shaughnessy. A close study of confidential state department correspondence at the time reveals numerous references to Edith, an intelligent hostess who cuts through flappery and posturing to reveal true characters. Her story centers on Mexico during Huerta's regime. Woodrow Wilson directed US forces to bombard and land troops in Veracruz. Edith's clear observations and profound musings, never intended for publication, give an insider's view to an early US attempt at intervention that ended very badly. This book is a treasure because it broke my presumption that a diplomat's wife at that time would only write outdated irrelevant tripe. Edith's story, pieced together with old state department telegrams (available now under the freedom of information act - everyone involved is long gone) makes for a real thriller. I am writing this review from memory, having read the book over ten years ago. Edith will stay with me for all of my life.

A MUST HAVE for anyone with Early Stamford Ancestors!
I found this book to be very well organized and most informative. Sources for the references were well documented. My FINCH family relatives were mentioned in many places, as were many other original Stamford families. The history of Stamford was described in good detail. In the back of the book are genealogies of selected families. A great source for details of your ancestors.

Childhood Favorite
I have a tape of my mother (and I) reading this book when I was 18 mos old. She would start a sentence and I would finish it. Now that I am 40 and pregnant, I really want to find a copy of this book for my baby. I hope Amazon can come through! ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Very entertaining with lots of amusing stories
"Edith Head's Hollywood" goes where "The Dress Doctor" failed to by giving readers a more in depth look into the woman behind the enigmatic designer. This book also dispells various rumors about Edith and gets behind the truth to several false claims and accusations (some by Edith herself). Very well researched and put together with an extensive listing of the films Edith worked on over her successful 50 year career as Hollywoods most proclaimed costume designer.

Your place in the Cards---Right On Fortune Telling
I personally knew the author and was totally taken by her psychic abilities.

She not only was able to predict my personal future happenings on a month to month basis, but also told me about my past and things that could only be known to me.

After Donalie had taught me how to use the book, I was amazed by the accuracy of the predictions that could be made using the book after a relatively short learning curve.

Coupled with my own readings from the Parlor Sybil Deck, I find the book to be an outstanding addition to my readings.

The book explores the individual as well as personal relationships based on positioning of cards in spreads that Randall developed and Donalie refined.

My copy is autographed by Donalie and was a gift to me when were stockbrokers together in Los Angeles.

Edith Stein: a Saint by choice
Arthur Giron provides the first real look at this historical figure Edith Stein who was recently cannonized. This work is a stellar piece of dramatic writing that adresses important issues faced by all those affected by World War II and the Holocaust. Giron uses beautiful writing techniques to analyze Edith Stein before she was a nun in a Carmelite convent and shapes a magical plot that gives the reader a fleeting hope for the victory of humanity over evil.

An essential collection for any library
Along with her good friend Henry James, Edith Wharton was an expert at studying the stiff social fabric of New York in the 1800's. In this collection of some of her best work, the reader is invited into the lives of characters who struggle against the confines of society, for love and/or their own sanity. The House of Mirth is one of the best novels I've ever read, with the thoroughly captivating character of Lily Bart taking center stage. Wharton proved that she could see love and all of its tribulations through the eyes of a man when she wrote The Age of Innocence. No matter what she wrote, she did so with unerring detail and an almost uncanny knack for "the right phrase" for every situation. This collection is an interesting study not only of "old New York" but of characters who stay with you long after the last sentence is savored.
