Excellent
This is a well written and engaging look into the importance of the Mandan and Hidatsa Indian villages as a pivotal point in trade systems during the late 1700's through early 1800's. Being located along the Missouri River in present day North Dakota, the Mandan/Hidatsa Indians traded horses, robes and furs to Canadian Fur Companies in return for guns and ammunition. They would then trade these goods for other commodities from various Northern Plains Indian Tribes, who previously may have traded with other tribes or the Spaniards further south. In part one, the authors give a lengthy but excellent and relevant chronological introduction as to the fur trade history of this geographical area. Part two includes five journals (or excerpts) of some of these Northwest Fur Company traders' first hand accounts depicting life as it was: John Macdonell's descriptions of the Indians, geography and trade in the 1790's; David Thompson's narrative describing his harrowing 1797 journey from Fort Assiniboine to the Mandan villages in the dead of winter; Larocque's two narratives, the "Missouri (1804)" and "Yellowstone (1805)" Journals, the latter of which, in the company with Crow Indians, he may possibly have been the first white man to descend the Yellowstone River, pre-dating William Clark by more than a year. The final narrative is of Charles McKenzie's four journeys to the Mandan villages (1804-1806), the first two in company with Larocque's expeditions. This is a fascinating read for fur trade enthusiasts and/or those whose interests are in early western exploration.

Outstanding as textbook, or as personal reference source.
While taking an Introductory course in Oceanography at St.Petersburg Jr.College (FL) I found a copy of this wonderful work in the library. Their acquisition cost was just over $50.00, I see that it now sells for over $100.00, thus I am not sure I wish to buy my own copy. For anyone in the field, it would be a fine additon to their personal library, if one was not in the nearby Public, or College, stacks. While I was particularly interested in the Ecology of Tamp Bay (Fl.) I still found enough basic information which I can related to our Estuary here. I am particularly interested in NEKTON (Blue Crabs and Shriimp) and this text treated them sufficiently well to answer my basic questons. (Net surfers: use your browser on topics such as Estuarine research, Tampa Bay Estuary, etc as a good starting point. This is a fine text, and a scholarly work. It is published by Wiley-Interscience Pubs and certainly carries their fine reputation for worthwhile reading. Those who can handle a modicum of math will enjoy the text, but I rather doubt that the casual reader will ''stay with it'', although it certainly makes a pleasant read, for either an Introductory student, like the undersigned, or for someone who is researching the Science of Oceanography. Too bad it so expensive, it would make a good first year course. As a retired pharmacist, I read many science texts and can only conclude by saying that this one text would certainly fill an important niche in your own personal science library, if you were looking for something on this topic. I guess I will order myself a copy, as I feel that John Day, Charles Hall and W.Mchael Kemp have done a splendid job. Alejandro Yanex-Arancibia brings his vast knowledge of ecology as seen by one from the areas south of the US, in an interesting manner. How would I approve on it? If they ever do an update version, I would love to see chapters on South Pacific benthic organisms, as well as some treatment of life under the Arctic and Antarctic Seas, and maybe throw in some information on other extreme environments such as the Dead Sea, and ocean vent tube worms, that sort of thing... Thanks for the opportunity to review this fine text. William R.Bell, RPh, St. Pete Fla. (14Feb1999) You may contact me at '' Squadcar54@aol.com '' *end of text

The funniest crime caper ever !
This is the way that real comedies should be written, acted, and directed. Who knew that this farce came from the founding fathers of Monty Phython. A true comic smash filled with breakthorugh performances especially from the talented Kevin Kline who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor! You should see it!

A vivid portrait of life in the NorthWest
This book features some of the most prominent authors born and bred in NorthWestern Ontario. I myself found the book intriguing, being from NW Ontario myself, because it references landmarks, sights, and sounds, common in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas. Nancy Bjorgo's story is without a doubt the one that stands out most in my mind in this incredible collection. I had no idea such talent resided in NorthWestern Ontario, the stories are powerful! If short fiction is your passion, pick this book up!

The Genius of C. Warren Thornthwaite, Climatologist-Geographer

Authors: John Russell Mather and Marie Sanderson

Climate based on measured datda
Thornthwaite "Climatic Water Budget Analysis" is rational, systematic and quantitative, based on measured data. Unlike Köppen which attempts to use vegetation to predict large general climate areas, Thornthwaite uses temperature, precipitation, latitude, day length and soil water-holding capacity for an objective perspective of climate. Model enhancements include net primary productivity in grams per square meter per year, continentality (continental vs. oceanic influence), aspect, an Index of Moisture that accounts for precipitation (income), potential and actual evapotranspiration (spending), soil water-holding capacity (storage or withdrawal), indices of moisture in arid and humid climates. While Köppen lumps mountains into "Highlands", Thornthwaite reflects objective conditions - over a 30-year period. Climate constraints (maximums, minimums, ranges) are comparable world wide. Agriculture, urban residents, water, soil and ecosystem managers find Thornthwaite logical, rational and useful (vs. Köppen, a "memorized" system of map areas).

Historical perspectives of Thornthwaite's time and teaching in Oklahoma, working with Birdseye, doing regional geography in Kentucky, heading the Soil Conservation Service, and applying the tools of weather and climate worldwide make his life and biography long-term valuable. Understand Thornthwaite and you realize just how much "fluff" and spin current Natl Weather Service and media weather-climate reports are. This biography is defensible, robust, rational and reveals hard work and a fresh perspective.

The Geology of Ore Deposits
This book, by Guilbert and Park, is the "Bible" for any economic geologist on ore deposits. As a graduate student in geology, I am constantly using it as a reference and use it more frequently than any other book I have. We used another textbook for my economic geology course, but all of us referred to "The Geology of Ore Deposits" when some info was needed. It is also on several professers shelves as well. Well organized and easy to find specific info.

The Gospel According to St. John: An Introduction With Commentary and Notes on the Greek Text
Published in Hardcover by Seabury Pr (1981)
Author: Charles Kingsley. Barrett
Amazon base price: $10.95
Average review score:

Well Done
This commentary by C.K. Barrett is much more thorough than any of the other commentaries I have read by him. It does not appear to be in a series being confined by the thoughts of the editors. The first 146 pages are devoted to background information. He seems to do the best job of any writer I have read on John. In John 1:1 he addresses the word "logos" better than any writer I have read. The book is 638 pages. In those pages Barrett gets to the point without a lot of fluff.
