A glimpse of life
Mr. Carroll has captured nature as it truly is. Like a fine craftsman he was one with the subject and as an artist he has accurately recorded what he observed and has presented the information coherently. I'm left with an indelible, poignant legacy.

This is the real thing.
David M. Carroll is one of the finest nature writer/philosophers I've ever come across in my entire reading career. Swampwalker's Journal is a book to be savored, relied upon. Caroll knows the lives of the wetlands so intimately, from first-hand experience over long years, that you know you're getting a privileged glimpse into deep nature. Added to that, he is a truly masterful illustrator, and a graceful, profound writer. I'll be waiting to buy any other book he produces.....

earthly delight
a perfect book for the armchair naturalist. carroll's skills at observation and illustration are unmatched. more than a field guide, this book serves as a springboard for carroll's cogent ruminations on man and nature.

Triptych (also check out Mechanical Birds)
I was in college when I first met Denver Butson (crazy man, Italy semester again- but maybe this time with hot water?). Great person, master poet, entertaining teacher -managed the Pisan Cantos steps from an Italian princess and literary heir.
Tryptich is self help for everyone who finds themselves burning.

Thought-provoking, insightful, light rays flirt in darkness
Denver's mastery of exact word useage portrays volumes of meaning. Tiny rays of light in his darker works flirt with the reader. His good news? There is always hope!

A challenging and forceful new voice in American poetry
Do you know what a "textual marriage" is? Are you familiar with the poetic form "ghazel"? Have you mused recently over crows? Have you considered the difference between drowning and dancing? With this first collection of poetry from Denver Butson, a challenging and forceful new voice has emerged in American poetry. A textual marriage is a poetic form Butson invented that alternates successive lines from two different texts--in one case, a sensational NEW YORK POST article and a poem by Kenneth Patchen--to create a startlingly orginal poem. A ghazel is a Persian poetic form as intricate as a sestina. "No one waves to the blackest birds." Crows. This image resonates throughout the collection: black wings, the darkness, the common-ness of the common crow (first introduced in association with a brother who did or did not commit suicide). And, curiously, in one poem it is the absence of the word "crow" that sustains the poem. And is it possible to read the verb "waves" as the noun to introduce another central image? That of drowning? Briefly, this collection teases and stimulates and excites the reader's mind. As Butson notes, "These broken syllables / we try to re-form." Language, imagination, image, meaning. Denver Butson is a poet of depth, complexity, and strangeness who has a brilliant career before him.

See How God Works in the World!
So many separate events --- the First World War, the ascension of Emperor Charles of Austria, the failure of his peace plan, the reign of Czar Nicholas of Russia, the shenanigans of Rasputin, the collapse of Russia's first revolutionary government and the rise of Lenin --- all these are tied together to show that God really is in control. The appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Portugal in that fateful year of 1917 brings it all home. I have long been fascinated by the events of the Russian Revolution, but until I read this book I had only a vague notion of the pattern, the proof, that these were not just random events happening without reason. Human beings brought about the terrible First World War, and all the tragedies and disasters that led to Russia's fall to Communism. But God has managed to let all things work for good, ultimately. This is a fascinating and educational book. Enjoy it!

Fascinating and well-written history
1917 was the year the USA entered WWI, the year of the Communist revolution, and the year of Our Lady of Fatima. This book ties these three stories together with fascinating accounts and riveting anecdotes. Read about the year's great leaders and their attempts to re-shape the world, while all along, in a peaceful village in Portugal, the Queen of Heaven had the formula for peace. The book is a must for anyone studying WWI and the Communist revolution. First rate Catholic history.

Acts of Teaching: How to Teach Writing: A Text, A Reader, A Narrative

A must-have for the teacher of English
I have had the opportunity to meet each author in their New Jersey Writing Project in Texas Institute, and I must say this book is an absolute in the instruction of writing. Instead of forcing unreal formulaic writing upon our students, Carroll and Wilson are staunch advocates of voice in writing. If you are looking for a formula or gimmick to teach your students writing, this is NOT the book for you. Instead, Carroll and Wilson use tried and true techniques focusing on the reading-writing connection, pre-writing, and revision that work for students of all grade levels. As a new teacher, this book in conjunction with their Institute has been the most useful tool I have encountered.

Addresses all aspects of successful teaching pragmatically
Authors Carroll and Wilson focus on students AND teachers as writers. This text is critical to those who teach writing. It includes specific activities and strategies for prewriting, conferencing, revision, publishing. Included are many helpful journal articles. It is the most successful tool I've used in over 20 years of teaching students of all grade and ability levels. It is a MUST HAVE. In an empty classroom beseiged by flames, this is THE text I'd grab !

Please... give us more like this! Extraordinary!
I gave this book to my niece for Christmas and it was a huge hit, both with her and with my sister. This was no surprise to me as I had to really guilt myself into giving it away instead of keeping it here in our house.... good thing it's readily available, at least for the time being. Next purchase I make from Amazon I'm throwing this in my basket too. :)

The selections of prose complement the puzzle scenes beautifully and give kids a nice overview of both the Alice and Through the Looking Glass books. The puzzles themselves did not succumb to either "Eat Me" or "Drink Me" (i.e. they're not too big, and not too small, but just right). Each piece is color-coded on the back so you don't mix up the different scenes - a very nice touch. Also included are mylar protector sleeves so the puzzles will presumably stay put after being worked and reworked - another nice touch. Overall, the book is extremely well made and something that deserves to be handed down through generations.

This is the only book of its kind I've found, besides the Escher puzzle book which I haven't yet seen except on Amazon. Bravo to the publishers! Please make more!

AN A+ FOR THIS ALICE!
A perennial favorite from generation to generation returns in a delightful set of 7 jigsaw puzzles housed in attractive and practical book form. Youngsters and adults will derive additional hours of pleasure from Lewis Carroll's enchanting stories as they piece together episodes from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass."

Each puzzle is paired with corresponding texts from these beloved tales. Thus, we rediscover Alice looking longingly down the rabbit hole, participating in the Dodo's race, chatting with the Cheshire-Cat, listening to the Mock Turtle's tale of woe, watching the trial of the Knave of Hearts, even meeting the hilarious White Knight.

Forty-eight piece puzzles seems an appropriate choice as they challenge younger solvers and entertain older children. Perhaps best of all is the discovery that we can put Humpty Dumpty together again!

Authentic Metaphysics in an Age of Unreality
Published in Paperback by Peter Lang Publishing (1993)
Authors: Leo Sweeney, William J. Carroll, and John J. Furlong
Amazon base price: $35.95
Used price: $32.49
Average review score:

Best contemporary book on the issue
A marvel in comparison to the many contemporary metaphysics books that are still so influenced by modernism, positivism and postmodernism. The book covers all issues dealt with by positivist books, but also traditional metaphysical trancendentals (truth, goodness, beauty), linking them to the ultimate Being. The author is not afraid of political correctness, arguing that metaphsics is a scientific discipline, and apologetically interacts with many recent philosophical developments, showing their inadequacy. The book is thick, exhaustive and with a good academic level. The author seems to be influenced by Gilson.

Kudos from a former student
Fr. Sweeney was surprised when I referred to his book as a "metaphysicial primer". I meant it as a compliment. This is a lively yet scholarly introduction to metaphysics. It is equally valuable to advanced students and career academics.

Her to the rescue, fantastic!
A woman from the city moves next-door to a farmer with three
kids and a inkling to keep away from the new "city" folk. But
his kids love the new neighbor. And when Daddy gets hurt, lovely
and sharp-witted Allison comes to the rescue.
Great characters, good plot, swift dialogue.

Small towns at their best
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. I was instantly hooked and felt right at home. The story takes place in a small town in Ohio that is very similar to where I grew up. I felt like I was reading about people I knew from home. I was drawn into the story and the romantic pull between the main characters. My only disappointment was when the book was over. I miss the characters!

From a pleased Norwegian
The existing review of this book that appears on the Amazon site is an excellent one that gives great details about the book. All I wanted to say is that as a fellow author, and of Norwegian descent, I regretted every time I had to put this book down.
There is a song by the late Canadian Stan Rogers that includes the line: "Now you know what it is to scale the heights and fall just short of fame, and have not one in ten thousand know your name."
That was written about someone else, but it sure fits in Balchen's case. A man always on the verge of being at least as famous as Admiral Byrd. A man of incredible courage, inventiveness, and grace in the face of hostilities, both of nature and of Byrd himself. This is an awesome biography that ought to be the catalyst for the re-writing of every history textbook. I thank Carrol Glines for making the enormous effort.

A long overdue recognition of a true hero.
Bernt Balchen is perhaps the most underappreciated hero of our times. A master flyer, an artist, a negotiator, and most of all, a soldier, Balchen's unassuming personality belied the fact that he had one of the most fascinating careers in aviation history. Balchen, unfortunately, was the victim of a vendetta by a man for whom he had done much, Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Byrd feared that Balchen would reveal that Byrd's famous first flight over the North Pole was in fact a fraud, and waged a life-long war against Balchen. Glines is a highly skilled biographer (Jimmy Doolittle, Roscoe Turner) and he makes the most of his talents here. His research is excellent, and he portrays Balchen in his true colors as a patriot who fought the Russians with the Finns in the First World War, then conducted clandestine operations with the Norwegian underground in the second. He was the confidant of the great flyers of the era, including Amelia Earhart, and was among the first to be capable of true instrument flight. Bernt Balchen Polar Aviator would make a fantastic movie, for it has everything--exploration, romance, combat, skullduggery, and most of all, heroism. Balchen was a strong, handsome man who would have been an Olympic boxer for Norway if he had not elected to learn to fly with the Norwegian navy. He became an expert in Polar matters, saved many lives, was important during the Cold War, and had thousands of friends who knew just what a hero he was. The United States government, however, allowed Senator Harry Byrd to block Balchen's promotion to general, forcing his retirment, and at one time, deported him! This is a great biography of a great man, done by a great biographer!
