A thoroughly beautiful cookbook. Wonderfully illustrated!
John Carroll and Virginia Rainy have done a marvelous job on the California the Beautiful Cookbook. The book is an excellent addition to anyone's coffee-table collection, as well as an inspiring work for the moderately experienced cook. John has spent years as a personal chef in California - his experience, excellent taste, and personal warmth are infused in this wonderful cookbook. His recipes are practical and incredibly delicious. My personal favorite is the crab-salad sandwich on sourdough, I've served it to many guests and always with rave reviews. This cookbook is divided into regions of California. In becoming acquainted with the book you are becoming acquainted with the culinary traditions of a myriad of cultures and flavors. This is a must-have cookbook for the serious collector - I can't believe it's out of print - do yourself a favor and find a used copy of California the Beautiful, a cookbook you will use and enjoy over and over again!

Great Fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed the first of the Carroll Davenport series, "Island Murders" - and the second is just as fun, with mayhem in the town of Wilmington, North Carolina, and even more depth as we go further into discovering the unlikely heroine. The setting this time is the beautiful local arboretum - won't give away the plot but it's a very, very entertaining read and hopefully it won't be the last we see of Ms Davenport!

wonderful
the blurb saying that the introductory lecture is worth the price of admission is not a lie.

i was hesitant to purchase this due to it being a bit pricey, but i was not disappointed.

the ritual is easy to follow, and Mr Carroll has a suprisingly pleasant voice.

good stuff. worth the price tag, in my opinion.

Lesser known "Tigers"
I looked for years to learn something about the unit my Dad served in during WW2. Here is an informative and personal look at others who served in China under the command of Claire Chennault. These men and their support staff faced many of the same difficulties and supply problems as the more famous "Flying Tiger" fighter pilots, yet hardly any information has been available. Glines collected information from numerous sources: flight and ground crews, medical staff, official documents and personal diaries to shed some light on those who helped hold back the Japanese Empire during the early stages of the war when the majority of the country was focused on events in Europe. I found this book helped bring a deeper appreciation for the war my Dad never talked about and how it changed his view of the world forever. The dedication and performance of these men and women should not be forgotten. The building of peaceful relationships with all Chinese can be possible because of these few warriors.

Chicken Skin: True Spooky Stories of Hawaii

Paradise? There's something creepy under those swaying palms
The Hawaii known for its swaying palms and crashing seas is not the one depicted here. "Chicken Skin", the Hawaiian term for Goosebumps, makes us realize that paradise is not exempt from the supernatural. It is a wonderfully scary collection of true ghost stories retold by the affected locals. Best read under flickering candlelight.

Very Insightful!
I have been reading this book along with the book of Genesis, and this book's insights are amazing! The authors go section by section through the Pentateuch and descibe the events in a very clear manner, explaining ways in which the Gospel and Catholic teachings are prefigured in the stories. Then, each section has numerous questions to guide the reader to see how Christ and the Church are prefigured in the book. This book is GREAT!!

Great book!
Came across this book as a reference for a thesis I'm writing on this issue and it became my major source. Mr. Cochran masterfully delves into the subject matter and writes in a organized, concise style. Should be considered for text in related political science/sociology courses.
