A Compendium of Eastern Elements in Byron's Oriental Tales (Studies in Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Vol. 13)

A Better Understanding of Byron's Oriental Tales
Prof. Oueijan's book begins with a very interesting introduction in which he explains the need for a new reading of Orientalism in general, especially after the limited definition presented by Edward Said, and of Byron's Orientalism, in particular. The author presents a compendium of Oriental terminology employed by Byron in his tales; he discusses rather skillfully the meanings, the Eastern literary significance, and Byron's use of Oriental terms related to Eastern sites, architecture, flora and funa, titles and names, customs and costumes, and themes. I think the book opens a new dimension into the understanding of both Byron's works and of Orientalism, as well. William Durham

One of a kind
There are very few, if any, other books like this one. Regardless of your field of science or engineering, you will find extremely useful technical vocabulary here. One can take conventional Japanese classes for years and never come across even simple words like "equation" or "axis", all of which you will learn here. Written by PhD engineers, the book uses numerous written examples to put all the vocab into context.

Additioal information for customers
Cowboy Justice won Westerners International Co-Founders Best Book Award and to great critical acclaim.

"Cowboy Justice is a nonfiction masterpiece that shows us a lawman who enforced the law because the Rule of Law was sacred to him. There was no sense of personal gain or selfish career building, nor was there a sense of power for power's sake. Gober deserves a place beside Earp, Masterson, Garrett and others who gained fame for their law enforcement. And yet, he almost stands alone when it comes to greatness tempered with courage and humility." ---Michael Martin Murphey

Read The lord's Oyster then this book.
Great book. Picks right up where the Lord's Oyster left off. It really is nice to read a book of historical nature that has a sort of recognizability to it. I am from the Eastern Shore of Md and perhaps I am some-what biased in opinion. Read it for yourself though, you'll be suprised to see how much like Huckleberry Finn this is. (but on the bay not the Mississippi.)

A Thorough Statistical Simulation Text
It's not easy to find good books about simulation techniques for experimental phenomena for general purpose: one must rely on area-specific texts (computational physics, computational biology, optimal control, etc.), that often lack important topics, so in introductory level as in specific procedures and possible generalizations. This book has it all: practically self-contained for those with basic notions about calculus (its chapter about probability and statistics, although brief, is enough to follow the rest of the book), it is centered on learning how to do simulation in real-life situations. His depth and detail in treating random number generation, for arbitrary probability distributions in discrete or continuous case, is matchless (it occupies a third of the book). Another differential is the thorough treatment of Monte Carlo methods, Markov models, as well as topics concerning model construction and analysis, and error estimations. All this with profuse examples from biology and statistics, and lots of exercises at the end of each chapter (many of them with commented resolutions at the end of the book), as well as a huge bibliography and a guide to FORTRAN IMSL and NAG routines for use in several simulation techniques (random number generators, Markov chains, etc.). I only regret that the few code listings are only in BASIC and MINITAB. As a physicist, I'd like to see some of these codes in Fortran or C (even because it would be coherent with the routines guide); but I can't ask too much, because people at business, engineering and biology may not agree with me in the programming language choice. Anyway, it's a remarkable and very useful book. I can't get rid of it in my work in Monte Carlo simulation. If you are interested on or work with statistical simulation in any area of science or technology, you'll certainly do well in acquiring a copy: it won't disappoint you!

The End of Suffering: The Work of Byron Katie

Your Stories On Tape!
A wonderful introduction to The Work of Byron Katie, The End of Suffering is a selection of powerful dialogues between Byron Katie and people-men and women, from child to adult-who have been holding onto painful concepts that no longer serve them. They represent us; they *are* us. As with all recordings of Katie facilitating The Work-her unique and deceptively simple self-inquiry process-there is food for thought here that you can digest again and again for new insights. From quotidien complaints to life traumas, The Work-a written process of cognitive restructuring, if you want to get fancy about it-is a way to relieve the suffering that occurs when we attach to thoughts that are not true for us. "Confusion is the only suffering," Katie says. While you listen to these people "undo" themselves, you'll empathize, realize, learn, and laugh along with them.

Family and Other Strangers
Byron Sacre takes us on a lively journey covering diverse aspects of life. Even those items which may be unfamiliar to you will enrich and expand your experiences. Most stories and poems will stir some familiar strain within you.

The stories encompass a wide variety of topics and styles. Some fit well into the "Twilight Zone" range; others would make Hitchcock happy. Still others are best read in front of a fire on a stormy night.

It is difficult to pick a favorite among the selections, but three struck a chord immediately. "Uncommon Versatility" allows us a brief peek into a story of a unique artist. "Conversations with My Cat" will speak to all cat lovers, especially those who belong to cats. "Julie's Retirement" depicts perfectly the paradoxes of duplicity and loyalty, between what people think and what they allow us to see on the surface.

I recommend Family and Other Strangers to anyone who enjoys reading and exploring the vagaries of human nature.
