Noir Appleby
Sir John Appleby and his wife, Lady Judith accept an invitation to a house-party at Charne, the country estate of the Martineaus. Their friend, Grace Martineau is dying of cancer and she wants her friends about her one last time.

This particular Appleby is mostly dialogue. Almost all of the action (several deaths, drug dealing, statutory rape) takes place off stage. Innes paints very believable psychological portraits of his protagonists, a talent that may have been strengthened by the year he spent in Vienna, studying Freudian psychology. The characters' interactions tend to be both erudite and revealing, as in this mystery's opening scene when the guests have gathered in the loggia at dusk to hear a nightingale sing:

"'O Nightingale, that on yon bloomy Spray/ Warbl'st at eve, and when all the woods are still.'

"This was Bobby again, and it ought to have been harmless and agreeable. But it wasn't, Appleby thought--or not quite. Grace Martineau could be sensed as stiffening in displeasure as if she felt Bobby--her husband's nephew--to be guying this new poem, and so guying the bird. And it was quite possible--one suddenly perceived--that Grace didn't much like Bobby, anyway.

"And Diana Page, too, seemed not pleased, for she launched another attack on the young man.

"'Fancy spouting poetry about the nightingale,' she said, 'when one can sit still and listen to it!"

The deaths don't take place until the latter half of the mystery. Meanwhile the reader becomes well-acquainted with Grace Martineau and her machinations to have her husband remarry after she has died. Her guests, already on edge because they know this is the last time they will see their hostess, are shocked by her insistence that her husband should wed another after her passing. They are even more shocked when they learn Grace's choice of bride.

"The Bloody Wood" is a somber Appleby, almost more tragedy than mystery. Nevertheless it is a good mystery, where the reader is challenged to discover a killer, after the author has furnished revealing psychological portraits of the murder suspects.

Building Scientific Apparatus is great for a science fair!
My son chose to enter this year's science fair with an advance project that required vacume chamber construction, optics, and the original charged particle detection systems. This book is a perfect guide towards building most any mid-level research instrument.

Sketches, Structure and Site Plans Illuminate Calatrava work
In architecture and engineering we often see the finished product of the masters. The strength of this book is the sketches, architectural models and interview with Calatrava which explain the projects. The projects are Spandau Station, Jahn Sports Park, Kronprinzenbrücke (bridge), Oberbaumbrücke (bridge), and the Reichstag. The book has beautifully reproduced hand drawn ink drawings-plans, sections, details, elevations (presumably from Calatrava's office), as well as photos, engineering explanations, and historical background. I compared Calatrava's Reichstag to Sir Norman Fosters. I would like to see the two built bridges in Berlin and compare them to the nuts and bolts details in the book. And after I studied the hardlined ink drawings, something always draws me back to the napkin sketches-they capture the essence .

Excellent
The best parts of this bio are the interviews with Callas: you get a feeling for her emotions about events as they unfolded in her life. This is especially true close to the end of her life where the grief from her failed relationship with Onassis is so evident in her voice. Generous samples of Callas's key performances are also woven into the bio. I had never heard Callas sing so these samples were welcome and helpful in understanding Callas. (Her antics on the stage and behind the curtain are how you get to know Callas best. Not to mention that the samples allow you to witness firsthand the fiery, brave voice that made her famous). Overall, this was a strong, unconventional bio on a tragic heroine of the stage. I enjoyed it in its entirety.

Wow! What an ending!
I was enjoying this book. I like Sir John Appleby. Michael Innes's mysteries are sophisticated and quirky. Anyway, it was pretty good, then I got to the ending and wow! What a surprise! I had to give it 5 stars.

Appleby's neighbor, Carl Carson, has a loopy wife and lots of money troubles. He decides the only way out of his problems is to arrange for the kidnapping of his son. One problem--He doesn't have a son.

If you've never read an Appleby book, this might not be the best place to start, but it's still great.
