As one who has none of these characteristics, I found the book fascinating- an intriguing look at a world I knew nothing about. The final chapter is an unexpected gold mine of ideas and insights into a company, Spyderco, whose philosophy is guided by integrity ... "being good even if no one is watching".
You'll buy this book because it's the definitive book about a great knife company and its products. When you read it, you will get a lot more...you will learn about the company they call "the mouse with a megaphone" and it's no Mickey Mouse either!
Also, the book describes the management philosophy and practice at the Spyderco company. Fascinating insight into what makes Spyderco knives so good!
A nice feature of the book is that it can be read in bits and pieces. It has lots of glossy photos. It reminds me of reading National Geographic magazine. Parts are nice for casual browsing, other parts have in-depth description.
If I have my pants on, I'm carrying a Spyderco knife! If your Spyderco knife is indispensible, I'm confident you'll like this book!

From a sufferer's viewpoint myself, I cannot express how strongly I would recomend this book to others. I have now purchased 2 copies - I gave the second copy to my doctor so he could lend it to patients in the future because the first copy was so good!
This important book, published by the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association, is a must read for anyone with face pain. Written so the average person without a medical background can really understand these tragic conditions, it includes chapters on symptoms, causes, diagnosis, latest treatment options, alternative treatments, what to do when medication doesn't help, questions to ask when deciding on surgery, comparative statistics on outcomes and complications of different surgical procedures, recommendations on helping your doctor help you, tips from facial neuralgia patients, suggestions on how families can help, and so much more. An extensive resources section lists books, organizations and Internet resources and websites about facial neuralgias and related disorders. A glossary includes common medical terminology with easy to understand definitions.
Although "Striking Back" focuses on trigeminal neuralgia, other facial neuralgia conditions are covered including atypical facial pain, atypical trigeminal neuralgia, anesthesia dolorosa and glossopharyngeal neuralgia among others. These are rare conditions and most publications are directed towards the medical profession. What a rare find -- finally a book for those of us who are facial neuralgia patients or who are family members or friends.
The authors, one who suffered in the past from trigeminal neuralgia, the other, a neurosurgeon specializing in treating facial pain disorders, write with humor, compassion and hope. The book is well organized with good illustrations and pictures and is an important resource for anyone trying to live with a facial neuralgia disorder.
Just for the record, I am not associated with the authors or the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association in any way but am part of a team who writes a patient-to-patient website on facial neuralgias.

Mr. Hite has a distinctive writing style; it's slightly dense, a tad erudite, but very, very readable, and downright funny, when you think about it. When I go to Pyramid every Friday, his is the first column I go to.
If you're at all into gaming, or fringe theory, this is a great book. It's easily the most useful gaming product I've purchased in the last two years.
SJ Games has a reputation for putting out good supplements; this does NOT fail to deliver on that promise.

After a dismal first season as coach I was hell bent on improving my own performance as a coach. I read many books on coaching kids baseball before this book found me, it's funny how sometimes the cheapest and most unattractive book turns out to be the one you most cherish.
How many coaching books, for example, teach you great batting basics, and I am not talking about the old "see the ball hit the ball" coaching mantra. This book is full of proper baseball techniques, like how to grip the bat, how to swing the bat, where the hands should be at the start, where the hands should be at the end. This book covers all the basics of the game. It provides you with the tools to create a very solid base from which you can easily build a strong and effective team (or player). More than anything else this is where our team improved the most. From a team full of nothing, to kids who believed in their ability, simply because they knew how to do the little things correctly. The book has great chapters on fielding, base running, and throwing. It also covers the battery, a topic conveniently omitted by other books. The book is full of great verbal anchors and is written in an energetic style.
My advice, read the book, apply the proper techniques, then work on your teams own style and let the kids express their own individual talents. 'nough said.
I am giving copies of it as a gift to the coaches of their baseball league.
I have coached highschool, Little League, and adult baseball so I beleive that I know something about the game but I also know there is always something to learn. I read the book hoping to learn something I did not know and with the thought that I would get another coach's perspective on the game.
If one reads this book, it must be done the first time from cover to cover. If you "skim" the book, you may very well come away thinking it is terse and sexist. However, early on the author explains why the book was written in this way and those aspects drft into the background.
The book is full of tips and drills while it helps identify and explain common mistakes made by young players. From my perspective in having some knowledge of the game, the book was a great review. I even took away some new thoughts and ideas for my practices and certain players. That is the wonderful thing about this game, like Earl Weaver used to say: "It's what you learn after you know it all that really counts".
Bean's About Baseball covers only the basics. Basics that managers and players have to go back and reveiw through their entire "careers". If you are expereinced, the book will be valuable as a review and you may learn a little something new. Another coach's perspective can often be valuable.
If you are a new coach, this book is an excellent starting point. Take an evening to read the book (about 120 pages) and go back to it as you need it. After you read it, you will know the basics of hitting, pitching, and fielding. When you know the "how to" basics, you have to convey that to your players and this book helps there also. Good coaches know the game and can teach it. This book will get you closer to being a good coach.
I have given my copy to one of the first year managers in my league that sought me out to ask about practices and drills for young players. I do not expect to see that copy again. Like many books on youth baseball, readers of this book will need to make value judgements on certain aspects as they relate to the local league rules and philosophies.
I will be recomending to our local board of directors that this book be given to each manager as part of their packet for next spring. I will further recommend that a companion sheet accompany the book to elimnate conflicts between it and our local rules and philosophies.
Like many lagues, ours has many well meaning coaching volunteers that do not really know youth baseball and how to teach it to kids. If my proposal is adopted, "Bean's About Baseball" will be a primer to next year's coaching clinic.
I would strongly recommend it for new coaches and old.
Just my thoughts, Splitter

For those who are willing to work systematically through the various, simple exercises presented throughout the book, winning seems possible. For certain the two psychologists, Drs. Peiser and Sandry, are just a phone call or E-mail away at Midwest Psychological Healthcare, PC (773-871-2626 or msandry@suba.com) for those who need further assistance with their own unique process of changing.

As a mental health professional I recognize that the first few days of treatment are often the most tenuous for those seeking help, and encountering a religiously flavored 12-step program can produce resistance when acceptance is deperately needed. This book provides insight and explanation in counterpoint to AA doctrine.
If the forward by Albert Ellis was not predictive enough, it will be clear to the professional that the two authors are seasoned practitioners of Rational-Emotive Behavior therapy. Each of the traditional 12 steps of AA are reinterpreted in cognitive-behavioral terms to provide a sane rationale which is relevant to the cessation of addictive behaviors.
More importantly, there are a host of corresponding exercises which allow a client to apply the points being made. Further, the structure of the text provides a concrete framework for those in the scientific community to construct research questions.
I found the book quite readable and it is likely to be useful to who possess at least a 6th grade education. I would think that recordings of the book might be a useful adjunct for those whose reading skills are limited.
