just what I needed
Talk Thru the Bible provided me with what most commentaries cannot-- a clear and concise overview of the Bible that saved me the time and trouble of wading through paragraphs of tedious text. Wilkinson and Boa did an excellent job charting the outlines of each book of the Bible, providing capsulated information on the background and theme of each book, and explaining the Bible in modern-day English. I highly recommend this resource to any Bible student, Sunday School teacher, Bible study leader. In fact, it's thorough enough to meet the need of most Bible teachers, but also simple enough for any Christian. My library is incomplete without it.

This is a great survey book.
If you are looking for an easy to understand survey book, then this is what you want. Talk Thru the Bible does a good job explaining the historical background, date, theological contributions, and authorship of each book by highlighting the big ideas presented. It is written from a conservative evangelical perspective in a conversational mood and is devoid of heavy theological language.

Besides what you'd expect to find in a survey book, Talk Thru the Bible also offers explanations of Hebrew poetry which you can understand, nifty charts, and outlines detailed enough that you could develop sermons from them. All the articles are short and easy to digest--which is perfect for the micro wave attention spans (short) we all seem to have these days. This would be my choice of a textbook if I were to teach Old or New Testament survey.

A wonderful resource for the serious Bible student
This is a wonderful resource for any serious student of the Bible. Use it right along with your Bible to help you better understand the who, what, when, where of each book of the Bible and how it fits together as a whole. I find it very easy to follow and would highly recommend it for any Christian's library. Now I am even more excited than ever to dig deep into the treasures of God's word!

Target Joy, Not Fear
In the first few pages of the book, I was sitting on a launch pad, with the author, waiting to be rocketed into the rest of our lives. After a shocking lift-off, we came to realize that we were also piloting this craft called life. I was glad to be on this dreamlike adventure. Although, things and places looked and felt familiar, I was traveling in circles. With the help of "Obie", our happy guide, the fog began to clear and our path seemed less rocky. The decisions we make, based in love or fear, are the only guidance systems we have to navigate the currents and eddies of beliefs and emotions that swirl in our flightpath. If you are one of those people who are afraid to roll down the window and ask for directions, this book can help you find your way.

Show Me The Way
It's hard to put into words just how inspirational TARGET JOY was for me. With many books of a similar nature on my bookshelf I found myself referring to Ken's book more often than any other. I thouroughly enjoyed the interaction with Obie and the way he so lovingly pointed the reader along the joyous road to heaven. TARGET JOY is a must read for anyone who desires an insightful journey on how to move their own experience from one shadowed by fear to one enlightened by love.

A Winner
Target Joy grabbed me and drew me in emotionally with the first few paragraphs of the prologue. No wonder Obermeyer went searching for Truth! Who wouldn't after such a series of shocking experiences? The wisdom and insights into the human mind that he shares are right on. I learned a lot about myself as a result of his in depth dialogues, including how to have a sense of humor about my spiritual growth. I highly recommend this book to everyone searching for truth, especially to those who encounter struggles in their spiritual growth. And if you've ever lost a loved one, the prologue alone will knock your socks off and make you want to read Target Joy cover to cover ASAP. This is a winner and I can't wait for Volume 2.

Tiger the Lurp Dog
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (1984)
Authors: Kenn Miller and Kenneth Miller
Amazon base price: $3.50
Used price: $0.15
Average review score:

the mother of all lurp books
I resently reread this book and it brought back great memmories. Not of Vietnam, but of the early '80s when I was in the 82d Airborne and me and my fellow Sp4s set around talking about all things hard core and airborne, such as this book. In jump school and in the division we heard stories of lurps and rangers but did not really know what they did. This was the first book to go into detail about the life of lurps, and in my opinion this book is better than the fictional lurp books that followed. The book's ending is a heartbreak but also suggests a sequel. Let's hope it happens sometimes. Airborne all the way Kenn.

A CLASSIC!
This is the book that started it all! It's the one that first introduced LRRP/Rangers to the world and the one that set the standard for those of us who followed. Kenn Miller's is not just a military writer but a gifted writer whose style and talent reveal that gift and remind us that this is a craft and he is a craftsman. Sound hokey? Well, give his book a read and you'll see what I mean. These aren't stock characters and this isn't your everyday story. If you can find a copy of this book, hold on to it. It's a classic and with its next release will still be a bestseller!

Underrated classic novel about the Vietnam War
This novel took me by complete surprise. The writing was as good as anything I've read in recent memory. Miller is one of the most honest and descriptive writers of this genre and hopefully this won't be his last novel. I think that a more suitable title would have helped this work become a greater success. If it is ever reprinted, the author or publisher should definitely consider renaming it. I believe the current title doesn't do justice to the serious subject matter at hand. Either way, I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in a first-hand account of Lurps (Rangers) in action. This is truly the work of a great writer.

Treasures of Darkness
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (2001)
Author: Kenneth M. Hekman
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $9.05

Companion in a dark place
I started Treasures of Darkness wondering if it was going to be like the many grief books I had read but quickly realized it was different. Suddenly, I saw my own thoughts on paper - written by a stranger.
As one who has experienced the death of his child, I have yearned for the company of other brokenhearted fathers. Only those who have been here truly understand. Treasures of Darkness gave me a companion in the shadows. It brightened my way along this path.
This is not another "grief" book but a collection of experiences and hope. If you are a parent who has lost a child, recently or long ago, you owe it to yourself to read this book. If you have a loved one or friend who has lost a child, read the
book and then give it to them. It will allow you a glimpse of their new and strange world and will give them the realization that they are not alone in this tragic place.

Compelling, Faith-full, Honest
Treasures of Darkness allows us into the mind and heart of a fellow traveller on the Christian faith journey. Ken Hekman deeply, thoughtfully, and extremely honestly invites us to walk alongside of him as he journies through four stages of grief over the death of his beloved daughter, Carla. Few are able as honestly, boldly, and faithfully to question, wonder, weep, express anger, and joy in the face of such unspeakable pain. In poetry and prose readers encounter a profound search for the heart of God and for what it means to be human in relationship with God in the face of deep sorrow and pain. Ken does not settle for quick, easy, packaged "sympathy-card" answers to pain. Echoing the anguish of Job and some of the responses to life of David in the Psalms, Ken struggles with God, life, and death. And even in his most seemingly faith-questioning moments, it is precisely then that he is most faith-full. This book is timely for any who would read for its honesty, insight, and encouragement to Christian faith as Ken searches to know, serve, and love God in the face of some of life's deepest mysteries and pain.

Grief in Process
Ken is a phenominal communicator. He writes and speaks equally well. As a pastor who has listened to Ken teach a three - week seminar on the same topic, I am glad that he has written the book. The pain expressed in the poems is very real and is by no means gone from his life. But the presence of God is just as real and even when he cannot see Him, He has been carrying Ken from the beginning. I do not want to overstate the impact he has made on those of us in our church who have read the book and have listened to him speak. I am not even sure that I could. His words have touched very deeply in a place well many could not fathom. Pain is very real and personal to each of us and only someone who knows it can truly understand our grief. Ken has experienced it and can understand.
It should be stated that Ken is still in the process of grief. He will continue to learn more and be able to see God's hand from different perspectives as he goes.
The book is well worth reading but my recommendation would be that you don't read it while you are in the throws of grief. It would be better to be read much later or prior to grief invading your life.

Fantastic!
I really enjoyed this book! Fascinating book about the Essens! I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

Ancient words have a message for today
Ken Hanson's original translations of portions of the Dead Sea Scrolls bring to life the quiet, peaceful, and utterly spiritual life of the ancient Essenes. Those on a modern spiritual journey can find within the pages of this book a sense of the holy, and are reminded that, through the simplification of one's life, inner peace can be found even in today's busy, materialistic society.

Informative contribution to Dead Sea Scroll studies.
Using Ken Hanson's own original translations of passages from the Dead Sea Scrolls, Words Of Light vividly recreates the daily life and spiritual practices of the "Sons of Light", Essenes who lived simple lives deeply dedicated to a spiritual existence in their desert community. Words Of Light reveals how these men were able to incorporate spirituality so completely into the fabric of their daily lives; and how we can learn to achieve spiritual and personal fulfillment in today's world through their example of simplicity, community, and vision. Words Of Light is highly recommended reading for seekers of spirituality, as well as students of Essenic thought and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Thanks Ken!

An invaluable historical resource
This work is an invaluable historical resource for students of A Course In Miracles. Mr. Wapnick painstakingly details the life of Helen Schucman and the scribing of ACIM. He also provides many valuable examples of personal material between Helen and Jesus. Although difficult reading, it is essential for anyone who wants to know the story of how the Course came to be. Students of the Course the world over are grateful to Mr. Wapnick for his loving efforts in the area of A Course In Miracles. Highly recommended for serious students of ACIM.

Excellent!

Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics
Published in Paperback by Global Publications (1999)
Author: Kenneth A. Telford
Amazon base price: $17.00
Average review score:

Quite helpful for World Leaders
One is continually astounded by the prescience of thought displayed by the ancient Greek philosophers, and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is indeed an exemplary representative of the field. As president of the world's only superpower, one must continually balance many important concerns -- not the least of which is ensuring that one operates from the highest of ethical principles, and Nicomachean Ethics certainly retains a considerable amount of relevance -- even today.I have found that the various translations of Nicomachean Ethics miss some important, yet subtle, details of Aristotle's original writings, therefore I recommend readers to explore the tome in its original Greek. Aristotle was certainly a very important thinker -- unparalleled in his day, and still with valuable contributions to make in this modern era. Nicomachean Ethics is extraordinarily rich in ideas and I have unashamedly borrowed numerous themes for incorporation into my public speeches. More personally, one also enjoys discussing Aristotle's point of view with the more intelligent and refined elements of the policy-formulation side of one's current administration.I cannot recommend Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics enough to other world leaders.

Telford's reassessment of ancient thought most significant.
Ken Telford's translations and commentaries of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics are the most significant reassessment of ancient thought since the Middle Ages first discovered the incredible wonder of Greek civilization. The discoveries made by Telford have been so basic and so important as to drastically change the significance of almost everything the Greeks said.

These disocveries were made in two areas, which never impacted on one another, until one person became skilled in both areas, linguistics, especially Greek, and the indispensible rigor in philosophic training for which Telford is well known. For until now, there have been few scholars, sensitive to both the profoundest philosophic problems and the nuances of linguistic implications.

Telford discovered that what the Greeks had tried to say was obscured by the projection, upon their language and their works, of precisely the reductive way of thinking that their philosophy was trying to correct. It is as if, in Othello, the only way to the understanding of Desdemona were through the eyes of Iago, or as in Much Ado About Nothing, the way to the understanding of Hero must be through the eyes of John the Baptist.

Above all, Telford has demonstrated that the Greeks were well aware of the procedure they used while today there are few who even understand the relevance of procedure to science or philosophy. And it is procedure, far more that discoveries consequent to procedure, that constitutes, not only the greatest contribution of the Greeks, but the knowledge from which modern science might most sensibly profit. For the Greeks were conscious of their own acts far beyond our own awareness of ourselves. And no one has better articulated this factor of science, discovered by the Greeks, the variety of ways inquiry might be accomplished, than Telford.

Good Greek & good Aristotle leveraging each other.
The cliche that translating from one language to another is to provide an interpretation is true. Fortunately, Prof. Telford knows all the nuances of that problem including the cultural divide in time, space, & thought which separate Attic Greek from contemporary American English. He also, uniquely since William of Moerbeke translated Aristotle from Greek into Latin, has guarded the idea that each Greek word should have, ideally, a single English word as its equivalent consistently translating it (the Greek word) the same way each time. This, along with a very helpful index, permits the reader to check Prof. Telford's translation and see for himself whether or not it is both accurate and fits the argument as it is developped in the whole text. The point that translating and interpretation are intimately connected shows itself here in the benefit that each receives. The text is illuminated by understanding of Aristotle's principles and methods as well as that understanding is furthered by a translation in sympathy with Aristotle's methods and problems. This book is a continuation of Telford's extraordinary contribution (tr. & commentary on the "Poetics") both to Aristotelian studies as well as the humanities in general. All lovers of Aristotle will have their understanding of his greatness and goodness clarified and improved by this translation.

The Truth About Sacagawea a book review by Sarah
The Truth About Sacagawea has a wonderful story to tell about Sacagawea. Kenneth Thomasma worked very hard on it. This story is adventurous and it makes you want to keep on reading on and on. You always need to believe in yourself like Sacagawea, Lewis, and Clark did when they were going through tough times. Sacagawea was very brave to go on an expedition with her young child. Sacagawea went on this expedition because she was hired as an interpreter and guide person. Lewis and Clark went up the Missisippi River and then traveled on the Snake River.

A Good Introduction
While this book is a bit short (96 pages) it is also filled with fact, as written by Lewis and Clark themselves. This is a testament to the value of Sacajawea to the expedition. A crucial part of the success of the exploration of the Louisanna Purchase.

Sacajawea proved very valuable in finding food, acting as an interpreter for the exploring party and guiding them through lands that she remembered from her younger days. She was a Shoshoni girl who was captured at age 11 and married to another tribe.

This book serves as a good introduction (it was mine) to a fascinating woman who's place in history, while assured, probably is not as esteemed as it actually should be. She is too often overlooked in the school books or her contributions minimized. I barely remember anything (other than her name) from my days of learning history in school. And I was astonished to find that William Clark was the guardian of her two children after her death (before the choice of her husband).

On oversight this is a good book for a history buff or for someone interested in Native American History. It is also easy to understand and read and would benefit children from, say, 12 and up.

The irony of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
As Lewis and Clark began their journey to the Pacific Ocean, the two captains found it necessary to find a guide in order to pass over the mountains and to communicate with the Natives. As Thomasma says, "The hiring of Charbonneau and his young Shoshoni wife would prove to be a stroke of good fortune and good judgement."(p.15) As the reader progresses through the book, he or she may discover that the good luck wasn't referring to Charbonneau. In fact, the journal entries prove just the opposite. Throughout the book, it is very interesting to find the irony of hiring Charbonneau. As it turned out, this French-Canadian Trapper was nothing but a nuisance to the party. The irony shows when Sacajawea essentially becomes the guide, when she wasn't even hired, but brought on for sympathy reasons. In this view of the Charbonneau family, Charbonneau and his wife (although they are considered one with the other) are foils of one another. This biography well describes the voyage with the young mother and her husband, and their trials and helpful guidance given along the full voyage.

Those who are into history should read this book without any hesitation. This book falls into different categories of history, including American History, Native American Heritage, etc. This very informative narrative would easily be liked by history fans, as well as other ordinary people. Personally, I have never been a fan of history, but this book was very fascinating to me. The structure of this account "allows readers to experience what the explorers wrote about Sacajawea." (P. 11) Thomasma presents summaries of journal entries, along with a description of the points made out by that entry. In between each entry is a summary of the other events between the respecting passages. This structure gives a very effective way of helping the reader understand Sacajawea's importance and value along the Lewis and Clark Expedition. I highly recommend this 92 page narrative not only for the historical aspect, but also for the great story line it gives to the reader, and for the respect developed by reading this account of Sacajawea, the young mother who set a good example for all people.

Very informative, but...
My wife and I purchased West's Business Law, 7th ed. through the University of the Pacific bookstore and were generally pleased with it. We have referred to it on numerous occasions to understand legal concepts at school, as well as in our private lives. However...The copy we received was defective. It was missing everything between appendix page 212 and glossary page G-11. I have e-mailed the publisher, but received no response. I will probably order ANOTHER copy of the book (this time through amazon.com) and hope that this copy isn't defective. Because of the difficulty in getting a response from the publisher, I recommend ordering through a reputable retailer like amazon.com (which focuses on customer service as a priority).

West's Business Law Review
I recently purchased this book since it was directly related to my job (Purchasing). My friend went to a college that used this same book and it had looked interesting.

After I bought it from Amazon (lowest price, believe me), I was very satisfied. The author explains all topics in a clear manner and provides interesting case examples. This is one book that I will use as reference over and over. I can't imagine myself without it now. I also can't imagine a better business law book.

Terrific book
I used this book for two law classes. It is understandable, well written, and has intersting cases. I strongly recommend the additional study guide.
