Storming Ashore: One Soldier's Adventures in the First Engineer Special Brigade 1942-1945 Including D-Day

NOW I KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY
My dad was in the 531st and as many soldiers did, only touched on a few thing's here and there. This book put's all the pieces together. I knew that his unit was important but, "DARN". I really recommend this book to anyone who wondered just what the hell these guy's did.

Told by One Who was Really There
The appeal of Ken Garn's account for me is that this is the definitive account of the enlisted man's WW II told by an enlisted man. There are many stories and histories by historians and retired generals, but they gloss over what the man under fire on the beach was thinking about. The story telling is straightforward, personable and engaging.

A Special Unit
A good read, given the rising interest in WWII. An amazingly detailed memoir of a man who survived four assault landings and seven campaigns in a special engineer unit which prepared invasion beaches for troop landing, including D-Day. It resonated with this vet of that war, but others will find it compelling as well.

great stuff, definitely helps you really master lots of discrete math on all levels of difficulty

Student Solutions Guide - Must Have!
This book is definitely a must have to compliment the text book. It explains the odd problems of the text in a good amount of detail. It was very helpful in getting me through the course.

A must for the text!
This book is a must for any student using the text book. I thought this was a hard-as-nails course and this solutions manual was a lifesaver. For some of those truly outlandishly difficult questions (granted they must be odd for this manual) this book will go over them. Sometimes not to the degree of thoroughness as some might like but it gets the job done.

XML Family of Specifications: A Practical Guide

best on the market
This is the most thorough, comprehensive, and comprehensible book on the market to cover the full range of latest XML technologies. I think it is great!

This book is worth your attention
An excellent and comprehensive description of XML. Very up to date. The author gives a clear summary of the history of XML and where the various portions stand. He is to be commended for having a colour diagram on the inside cover, summarising the many specifications that are part of XML or associated with it, like XPath, XLink, JDOM, JAXP, DOM. Affiliated with this is a large pull out colour chart, that gives the time line and status of the components. The book is near exhaustive in its description of these components. You would do well to constantly refer to these two diagrams.

Pin the chart above your computer!

This may sound trivial to some. But when you are digging your way through a detailed set of examples in the book, it really helps to have a schematic overview to place things in perspective. All the more so if you happen to be new to many of the topics. Even experienced users can benefit.

The book has a CD with full listings of the examples. A great time saver. Also, since the author did not provide problem sets, you can easily make up your own, based on the CD. For example, suppose you are looking at Chapter 8, "Parsing with the DOM". Take an example document and its DTD from the CD. Change the DTD to add more elements and attributes. Make some of these mandatory. Run the parser on the document and the DTD. You should get errors, as expected, because the document is missing some new required items. Understand the error messages. Then correct the document by adding instances of those items. Rerun the parser. Any errors? If not, then try adding more to the DTD and document. This will really help you learn. You can quickly build up documents of some nontrivial complexity.

Of course, you can, and should, do analogous things with the other chapters.

In terms of the reader's background (I'm talking to you): You can come from either a formal programming environment, or from a publishing/designer background. In both cases, you should already be well familiar with HTML. This is not a formal prerequisite, but a lot of things in the book really do come easier if you know HTML. The programming examples in the book are usually in java, but the author emphasises that XML is not a procedural programming language like java. Rather, it is a declarative language, where you make templates. In this sense, XML is closer to HTML than to java or C.

This book is worth your attention.

A thorough and integrated guide to the important specs
Ken Sall not only guides the reader through each of the chief specifications in the XML "family" of technologies, but provides an integrated understanding of how these technologies relate to and enhance each other. The references provided in each chapter are exhaustive, and the accompanying CD and Web site make finding and experimenting with them and with the related tools a snap. The writing is lucid and entertaining. Highly recommended.

100 Missions North/a Fighter Pilots Story of Vietnam War
This is not the type of book I usually read (War stories). It was recommended by a friend. It sat in a stack of unread books for a few weeks. I finally started to read. I was mesmerized, I could not put it down!!!! I felt as if I was right there with the author! It is a good mixture of what the war was like for this pilot, his revelry, his mind set. I have read it twice, it flows easy, and sets on the mind well. Read It!!

Tales of Air War in Vietnam
It seems to me as if stories about the U.S. foot soldier in Vietnam abound, but the Vietnam War was also a war Americans fought fiercely in the air. It stands to reason then that the chronicle of the F105 fighter pilot, who flew the most harrowing missions and suffered the greatest losses, is one of the more significant, albeit under-appreciated, tales worthy of telling. As such, Ken Bell's 100 Missions North is an excellent place to dig in to the subject to appreciate a unique, by-gone perspective. Bell's first-hand account of the 100 missions he flew as a Thunderchief pilot over north Vietnam in 1966-67 provides a superb, three-dimensional picture of his life at Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base north of Bangkok, Thailand, one of two primary facilities for F105s during the war. Aside from the fact that Bell was a major at the time and thus missed out on the opportunity to live dorm-style in a hooch with lower-ranking officers, his story in many ways typifies the life of an F105 pilot of this era. Although his is not the only first-hand account of the F105 pilots' experience, it may be the most satisfying.

Thud Ridge, Jack Broughton's account of his tour, for instance, although essential as a piece of F105 fighter pilot history, is not a straightforward chronological account of his experiences. Instead, Broughton picks and chooses subjects for each chapter, so although there is something of a running narrative, the text skips around a bit. Not a big problem but it can be confusing unless you've been a member of a fighter wing. Therefore, I would also say Broughton seems to be writing more to a limited audience, the fellow fighter pilot as well as the military enthusiast; hence, although a good book regarding its subject, Thud Ridge is more for those already with a base knowledge of air war and squadrons.

Another top-notch book but with a broader appeal than Thud Ridge is G.I. Basel's Pak Six. Basel's book is quite an enjoyable read. He turns a nice phrase, recounts interesting stories, and is easy to follow and understand. Basel also has a good sense of humor that helps the outsider appreciate the F105 fighter pilot mentality. Why then is Pak Six not the first book to pick up on the F105 pilot experience? Just this'length. Pak Six has about half as many pages as 100 Missions North. In spite of the fact that Basel's book was a pure pleasure to read, and I finished it in about two days, it nonetheless gets into and out of its subject too quickly. It's good to leave the reader wanting more, but I wanted much more.

It was after I read these two books that I came across 100 Missions North. Bell's book is the one I wished I'd picked up first. At 300 pages, it provides a detailed, nicely paced, chronological account of the 100 missions he flew. Although he doesn't literally account for all 100 missions, Bell presents the highlights of his most significant missions and discusses life outside the cockpit as well. Like Basel, he is easy to understand and can tell a good story, and like a seasoned writer, is not embarrassed to confess his fears and mistakes while flying missions. Likewise, he provides honest observations about the world and people around him during his tour.

For anyone interested in this side of the Vietnam War, all three books are a must, and certainly, all three offer something unique that in total present a thorough picture of what it must have been like to be there, a subject of particular interest to me since my father was there too, but he's no longer around to recount his experiences. Of the group, 100 Missions North is the most well-rounded regarding its subject and is certainly a worthy place to begin getting a grasp of life inside the cockpit while flying bombing missions into a region reputed to be the most heavily defended in the history of warfare.

100 Missions North/a Fighter Pilots Story of the Vietnam War
AWESOME! Outstanding, honest account of the frustrations faced by combat pilots in South East Asia.

I highly recommend this book to any parent, family member, physician, therapist ,etc who has a child or deals w/ a child that has Arthrogryposis. This book is very informational, covers a lot about various characteristics of a child w/ AMC. This easy to read book will be and asset to anyone who reads it.

Easy to understand
This book is written very well. I highly recommend it if you are trying to find out more about Arthrogyposis and how to treat it. It covers everything from explanations about the disability to types of corrective surgeries commonly used to ideas for splinting & bracing. It can be a little graphihc though since it has color photos of surgeries and children that are at times really involved. But it is realistic and understandable and equips you with good information. I bring it to any new therapy sessions to inform therapists and doctors who aren't familiar with AMC.

I TAKE IT TO EVERY DOCTORS APPOINTMENT AND USE THE INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK ALL THE TIME. AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED THIS BOOK IS WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD.

Invaluable Resource for Speech-Language Pathologists!
I am an SLP and work in a hospital setting and have found this to be an invaluable resource while working with clients of all ages. It takes what you've learned as a grad student and sums it all up into a useful resource that you'll use over and over again.

Wonderful resource for assessing clients of all ages!
I use this as a text in my Diagnostic Procedures Class which I teach at So. Il. Univ. @ Edwardsville. This book has tables, norms, and forms for diagnostics in a variety of areas. I wish I had this book at my disposable when I was doing work as a staff therapist. It takes the best diagnostic information from a variety of texts and puts it in one book!

Not exactly for the weekend bird house builder. Charles has abilities beyond description. A must have for any enthusiast!

The best indian architect
Everybody interested about architecture and India must read this book. Charles correa is a master architect that was able to mix a real contemporary style with the indian vernacular architecture. He is very concerned by the future development of the indian cities, some project show it very well. We can see in this book all the main project of his career in the first part with drawings and beautiful pictures. in the second part there is a cronological review of all his project build or not during his long career.

A wonderfully creative mind, a true archutect
In this age of "fashionable" architectyure, it is rare to find someone who re-affirms the esential values of light, form and space, together with cultue, climate and appropriate technology.

Emphasizes the spiritual without discounting the methods
The Antioch Effect is a balanced church growth book, which emphasizes the spiritual condition of the church without discounting the importance of methods and strategy. Using the church of Antioch as his model church, Hemphill examines eight characteristics of an effective church. They are supernatural power, worship, prayer, leadership, fellowship, vision, evangelistic passion and discipleship. The book is written from the perspective of a Southern Baptist church consultant who combines the experience of both a practitioner and a consultant. At times I thought the book bogged down but it was worth the read. The Antioch Effect contains solid growth principles to learn and practical methods to implement.

Used As a Textbook in Seminary class
Dr. Hemphill's book is certainly valuable to pastors, college and seminary ministerial students. It was greatly accepted as a textbook for my class in church growth at Temple Baptist Seminary. All pastors who are interested in a Bible base for church growth will find this book very helpful.

An excellent book which focuses on biblical principles.
Hemphill has written an excellent book which focuses on biblical principles, not church growth strategies or techniques. This powerful book assists the reader to examine what kind of church has the power of God in it. As a former pastor, church growth consultant, and current seminary president, Hemphill is very qualified to write a book on church growth.

It's 10 o'clock, do you know where your Parole Officer is??
This amazing and horrific story could only be TRUE.
No fiction writer could possibly convince their publisher of the logic of the storyline that a convicted murderer would be released again and again into the population to run rampant on drugs, go unsupervised and undetected on parole, and commit the atrocities described in this book. This story is a valuable study in the nature/nurture contribution to the serial killer personality.

very good
Very detailed and well written book about this sick individual.

Another great one by Gary Lavergne
Every bit as good as Sniper in the Tower, Gary Lavergne gives us another read we can't put down. The story's not pretty but the research is excellent. (...) I was thrilled to see it out in MM. All true crime readers should get this one.
