Perfect For Halloween Or Around A Campfire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Folks, are you looking for that book you can read to your whole family without having to skip over a half a dozen curse words? Would you like a book that is SO well written it will even put YOU on the edge of your seats in terror and suspense? Well here it is ( or rather one of them, she has more) The first time I ever read one of Nancy's books, it was Ghost's of the Carolina's and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. It is that good. The same holds true for this one. Nancy did her homework and she came up with some of the most terrifying ghost stories around. Now, unlike many writers who come up with their own "ghosts", Nancy found ones that have actully been reported to exist, and she tells them in such a way that it makes you actually feel like you are right there experiencing them. This is one of those books you read when you want to be "spooky" in the comfort of your own home and reading it by yourself, or you're out in the woods with your family and they want to hear a good ghost story while nestled around the campfire. Better yet, read it to them on Halloween night and you just might scare them enough to where they will all want to sleep with you in your bed. Nancy Roberts is the Shakespeare of Haunted Stories.

Take a hiking honeymoon with this book!
This book inspired one of the best vacations I've taken (while closest to home!)exploring the waterfalls of NH. The directions and descriptions are accurate and easy to follow, and the falls themselves are exquisite--even in dry August weather, when we saw them. This will be a gift to friends, to be sure. Experienced hikers will appreciate it, but it's suitable for beginners. Not many geriatric hikes, however.

An easy fun introduction to your telescope and the moon
A well written 'how to' for novice astronomers. The book describes pieces of the telescope to seas of the moon in a organized fashion. Chapters are broken out as views of the moon and each attraction is mapped with directions. Historical anecdotes accompany each chapter and give good perspective to what we are viewing. The author respects the reader- there are no excessive words and he assumes intelligence. It makes you want to know more about the moon!

A good introduction to a period of Scottish history
Robert the Bruce finished the job William Wallace started. There is a detailed and interesting account of the Battle of Bannock Burn, June 1314. The conflicting nuances of Scottish and English relationships are also set forth. A good book to have for gaining an understanding of Scot history.

Entertaining. Informative...........
For history buffs of period and place, I recommend reading this book as a comparison to Barron's "Scottish War of Independence", to ascertain the variations told of Bruce's life. It seems Barron's sources or, at least, his publication of same, are a bit more profuse than Scott's and the tale he tells is markedly different in some key areas. Nevertheless, Scott's "Robert the Bruce" is an engaging read that will entertain and inform any avid history reader. One should seek additional sources, however, for a more detailed description of the epic battle of Bannockburn - a nearly miraculous martial achievement of the gifted warrior, Bruce.

Scots wham Bruce has aften led....
In further efforts to create a deeper connection to our Scottish heritage, I came across "Robert the Bruce--King of Scots" by Ronald McNair Scott. Escaping the tendency toward the dryness which befalls many historians--indeed, which seems unavoidable when reciting names and place and dates--Scott weaves an epic yarn about the man who finished the labors begun by William Wallace and led Scotland in securing her independence.

Drawing from various historical and literary sources, including a number of contemporary chronicles on both the English and Scottish sides, Scott takes us from the death of Alexander III to the intervention and interposition of Edward I; from Stirling to Falkirk; from the death of Wallace to that of Longshanks himself. And then in riveting detail, the campaigns of the Bruce.

"Braveheart" would have you believe that Scottish independence was won on the fields of Bannockburn. While that was indeed a turning point for the rag-tag Scottish army, it was not until 14 years later that a truce was signed and England formally recognized Scotland's borders and her right to be secure within them. We also learn of many other discrepancies between history and film.

A pair of Grahams receive honorable (or, dishonorable) mention--Sirs David and Patrick. Unfortunately, the tendency for our Scots forbears to be on the wrong side of history holds true. Sir David is named in the plot to capture Wallace (who is actually taken in the home of Sir John Menteith--a cadet clan of the Grahams). Sir Patrick was connected with a plot to assassinate King Robert--he was later acquitted.

If you are interested in learning the facts behind a great quest for freedom and independence--or simply some of the history behind this great warrior-king, I highly recommend this fine work.

Molecular Biology of the Cell
Molecular Biology of the Cell is one of the best surveys available on the status of current information about cellular biology. The authors skillfully accomplish the difficult task of combining detail with readability while conveying the excitement of this dynamic field. Clear, concise, and colorful illustrations assist in this task and the book is a fine collection of splendidly dramatic photos of "molecular biology of the cell" in action. They covered an enormous amount of material with a style that is simple enough for a college-level biology student to follow with enough detail and references to be of use to an experienced research scientist. Bravo for a job well-done!

Two thumbs way up
This is latest update for the most revered text in the field of cell and molecular biology. I used this book as an undergraduate even though this was not the required text for the course. I still turn to it often as a graduate student. As someone who has read the book cover to cover I can vouch for its extensive coverage of the most important concepts and the abandance of information on the most frequntly encountered concepts. It is a must have for any serious student of cell, molecular and developmental biology. I recommend that you buy this book in addition to any required texts for your course. The book is so comprehensive that even topics that gained prominance in 2002 such as RNA interference are wonderfully presented. Even if you are new to this subject area this book if properly used can increase you understanding immensely of even the most difficult of concepts. You would never regret buying this.

Crystal clear
I've just finished reading this book and i feel this new edition is even better than it's predecessor, which is already not far from perfect. This well-known textbook is a comprehensive overview of what we have known about molecular cell biology, and what's more important is - every material here are treated very clearly and carefully, and this is where this book really shines - I even believe a layman with some elementary knowledge about chemistry and biology could not only read this book from cover to cover but also actually *understand* them.

Both the material and the references are quite up-to-date (not surprising), so don't hesitate to buy if you have the third edition.

I give it five stars because:
1) the authority is doubtless;
2) it's comprehensive, wide in scope;
3) the text is written in plain english, thus won't confuse students in the non-english speaking countries;
4) the figures are *really* excellent, IMHO better than any others that I have seen in other books;
5) the index is nice;

and some minor flaws:
The typesetting of "List of Topics" is somewhat... odd. There are no page numbers associate with the individual topics in that list too. Also I think the reference sections could be better.

So... let it be 4.5 stars.

The Ultimate Astral Travel Guide
Would you like to meditate in the farthest reaches of space, seek the ends of the universe, or visit a long-lost friend or family member? Have you ever longed to travel to realms full of beauty, music, knowledge and loving beings? Now you can. All you'll need to begin your adventures is to read a copy of Robert Bruce's excellent book, "Astral Dynamics".

Astral Dynamics may well be the best guidebook to astral projection (also known as out-of-body experience, or OBE) you'll ever read. Not only does Bruce take the reader through a step-by-step process (complete with pictures) of how to energize one's astral body and successfully master the core skills of astral projection, but he also includes delightful first-person accounts of what it feels like to travel out of body.

Bruce's book helps you learn how to achieve deep physical relaxation, tame your mind, and achieve a trance state before mastering the art of projecting your "etheric double". Bruce provides invaluable pointers such as keeping the first projections ultrashort, so that they can be remembered, and ignoring noises and other distracting hallucinations just prior to out-of-body travel.

I am especially impressed with Bruce's descriptions of common difficulties encountered by astral travelers, such as waking paralysis, spontaneous projection, getting stuck to one's body during exit, exit cramping or pain, saliva problems, and disorientation, among other things.

I love the way Bruce covers much more than just the basics of astral travel. He differentiates lucid dreaming from astral projection, and describes the technique of virtual reality projection whereby "the subconscious mind can be tricked into creating custom-made virtual realms" such as finding oneself inside the virtual world of a painting in the wall. Bruce also devotes chapters to the Akashic planes as well as what he calls "strange astral phenomena" such as reality fluctuations, melting body parts, vision reversal, OBE hitch-hikers and astral beings.

Astral Dynamics is a first-rate reference book that I love to come back to again and again.

THE book for learning astral projection!
This is the most helpful, most satisfyingly complete book I've read on any metaphysical subject. Robert Bruce's thorough attention to every aspect of astral projection leaves no question unanswered. Most guides to astral projection give a few techniques and leave the reader feeling helpless when those techniques don't work. Bruce, on the other hand, gives you not only the easiest and most effective projection techniques, but also energy, chakra, relaxation, and trance exercises that will, with time and practice, strengthen your ability to project. He tells you all of the common reasons for failing to project and how to fix the problems, and gives advice for dealing with things that can cause a projection experience to be unpleasant (such as fear and negative entities). He even describes dimensions above the astral, and how to attempt a higher-than-astral projection. Also, this book is not only for astral projection. Bruce's well thought out theories on astral physics and how projection works provide interesting reading for anyone who just wants to study the phenomenon of Out-of-Body Experiences. His instructions on relaxation and inducing trances can be used for meditation. Those interested in metaphysics/magic(k)/psi will find his energy and chakra exercises refreshingly effective. Astral Dynamics is just plain great. If you want to seriously try astral projection and are willing to do the practice necessary for it, get this book. It's probably the best book on the subject, and certainly the only one you'll need. Thank you, Robert Bruce!

Detailed technical Astral info!
What i really liked about this book is that it took a more detailed technical approach to AP than most. It contains detailed info about the energy body and different excercises to gain awareness of it and raise energy. The excercies rely on focusing tactile awareness on different parts of the body rather than on visualizing. You lightly scratch an area and then focus on the sensation it created keeping it in your mind. The excercises are simple and effective and confirmed alot of sensations i had experienced that until now i didnt understand. The mind-split theory is something i hadnt found in other AP books ive read.

Ive also read William Buhlman's "Adventures Beyond the Body" which seems to compliment Astral Dynamics quite well. Where Astral Dynamics goes into detail about the sturcture of the energy body and the Astral Planes, Adventures Beyond the Body gives an excellent theory on the structure of the Cosmos. I found Adventures Beyond the Body very inspirational and Astral Dynamics very informative with excercises that give a direct practical experience. I recommend reading them in that order (Adventures Beyond the Body then Astral Dynamics).

The single most useful textbook I own
This text covers every important aspect in the field, from experimental techniques and basic concepts to reviews of immunology, cancer, and developmental biology. I used it as a reference in four different undergraduate classes, and have prepared for several job interviews by reviewing the relevant information in this book. The illustrations are all relevant, the organization is excellent, and the prose is so well written that I take the book off the shelf and read it for fun. A new edition would be useful - some of the more speculative information is outdated - but this is still the best textbook I own.

Comprehensive and useful
Most people, when commenting about this book, tend to compare it to Lodish's Molecular Cell Biology. I own both, and I must say that they are quite similar in their content but different in the way of explaining concepts. Although Lodish's book is a little more up-to-date, it's just a matter of time until a new edition of MBoC is published. In fact, a great number of concepts are clearer in Molecular Biology of the Cell... and vice-versa. About the book, it is the authoritative text of molecular biology for beginners and a reference guide to all fields of cell biology. The chapters concerning the structure of the cell and of the organelles are amazing and include in-depth explanations. It also comprehends the best revision chapters on macromolecules compared to Lodish's. The team of authors was accurate to compose one of the best books in molecular biology for students of all biological and biomedical sciences.

Best intro molecular/cell text out there.
Well, considering that this book got me through a full year of molecular and cell biology as an undergraduate, I'm pretty fond of the book. Especially considering that the second half of the year was taught by two people who had never taught a class in their lives before. Reason for the five stars is that this is an INTRODUCTORY level textbook written about 7 years ago. Even considering that, it's thorough enough and comprehensive enough for an entire year. I wasn't expecting work done last year to be included and I wasn't expecting that it would delve into the intricate details of photosynthetic reaction centers or the latest in optical methods in single molecule dynamics. If you want that kind of detail, go to the journals or specialized texts. However, for those undergraduates undertaking a full year of MCB, I can't recommend this text highly enough. And if you're looking for prokaryotic information, I'd go pick up a copy of Prescott, Harley, and Klein's "Microbiology."
