Great for college grads
when u graduate, especially as a liberal arts grad, you know nothing about personal finance - especially credit, budgeting, and etc., - necessary info when u want to finally live on your own. i got the 1991 (3rd) edition from someone and it proved to be a good read. great book. I hope they write a 2003 edition with updated info, especially when it comes to income taxes.

An Excellent Review of Money Management
As an instructor of a personal finance course for more than 20 years, I think I know the best books in the field. This is it. This book's content is both classic and timely. The authors cover money from the intitial stages of the financial planning process to estate planning. Despite being a college level textbook, it is quite readable and filled with valuable information. A recent poll indicated that only 31% of American's know what the "time value of money" meant. After reading this book, you will know this and much, much more. This would one of the most important graduatation gifts to any student at any level, whether or not they plan to take the course. Dr. Garman is also the Director of the Institute for Personal Financial Employee Education at Virginia Tech and Dr. Forgue is a Professor at the University of Kentucky. They know their stuff when it comes to money.

An incredible book - a must read.
This book changed my life. The author provides a wealth of information on how to make good decisions. He also combines personal experiences with humor in this delightful book. Truth be known, if an individual was to incorporate the wisdom contained in this book into the decision making process, there would be a lot less pain in each individuals world. Raymond Charles Barker provides processes for treating the subconscious blocks which prevent individuals from attaining their goals. These treatments include everything from creating new ideas, eliminating problems, creating happiness, removing the belief of lack and limitation, how to decongest your consciousness and how to create a fresh mind!

Just incredible!!
One of the most powerful, empowering, enhancing books I have read this year. Barker is such an amazing communicator and teaches a new approach to spirituality that is eye opening and life changing. Read it if you dare!!!

The Practical Parent: Solutions to the Everyday Problems of Raising Children

The Practical Parent
27 years ago, this book saved my sanity and that of my children. I followed the advice to the letter, and within a few applications, all of us learned our lessons well. Today, they are our best friends... happy and well-adjusted. I have credited this book and these methods ever since, and today had an opportunity to recommend it to two colleagues. After a brief glance, both saw the potential in the methods and are ordering the books. I will always be grateful for what I learned here. It literally changed our lives.

My favorite parenting book!
I am an elementary school teacher and the mother of three children and this book has helped me more than all the child psychology books I have read. It gives practical advice for every conceivable situation and also gives antidotes from actual case studies where the advice was applied. It opens your mind up to all kinds of positive ways to teach your children to be more pleasant individuals. I have personally used alot of the advice and it works.

An absolute "must" for parents
The book gives excellent and compassionate methods to deal with everyday problems parents encounter with their upgrowing children. A warm and at the same time 'no-nonsense' approach. Paul Miedema, child-psychologist, The Netherlands

Practitioner's Guide Rational-Emotive Therapy
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (April, 1985)
Authors: Susan R. Walen and Raymond DiGiuseppe
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $14.00

Excellent resource!
This book is certainly one of the best books about REBT for therapists. Walen et al. do a great job to explain the basic concepts of REBT and how to get them across to clients.
They deal with difficult situations and how to solve them. Their systematic step-by-step approach of doing REBT consists of:
- Getting at the A's
- Getting at the C's
- Getting at the B's (a crucial point in therapy)
- Disputation: general and specific strategies
- Homework assignments
- The course of therapy

Numerous case examples illustrate the authors' points.
This book is a great reference book!

Possibly THE best overview of REBT for therapists.
While Ellis is the originator of REBT, he may or may not be the best author on the subject. Walen, Dryden and DiGiusseppe provide the underlying philosophy, the nuts-and-bolts, a boatload of techniques, and special applications of the therapy. I use REBT in practice, and this is the text to which I refer most often. If you are a therapist considering learning more about REBT and how to use it in practice, this is the book for you.

Psychology of Jesus and Mental Health
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (June, 1987)
Author: Raymond L. Cramer

Used price: $6.35

Aha !!
This is the one of the two most comprehensive and helpful books on psychology that I have ever read. I was profoundly moved by the simplicity of the language, the clarity of the message, and the hope that is offered. My road from depression to wholeness was greatly facilitated by the reading and putting into practice,of the gentle message , given two thousand years ago,by Jesus, and illuminated by Raymond Cramer. Three of my children have died in tragic accidents. My depression nearly drove me to the brink of insanity. With pathos and clear scientific logic, Cramer points out that "our frozen rage has melted unter the powerful love of God, we have been comforted-restored, changed, made able to live life at a highter, more creative level than ever before." So true.... Aha!

A must read for an accurate picture of human nature.
Writing in easily understood laymen's English, the author unlocks the hidden messages about human nature buried in the words of Christ within the Sermon on the Mount. Mr. Cramer, by carefully researching the original Greek language used in the Biblical text to determine the most accurate meaning of each passage, gives the reader, without being boring or dull, practical and unique insight into how to achieve optimum mental health and enjoy life.

One brief example is the meaning of "Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth." A meek person is definitely not a "casper milk toast", doormat, type person. The Greek stresses a meek person is one who is content and therefore can truly enjoy the material blessings ("earth") of life; in fact, the meek person has a strength of character that controls materialistic impulses rather than being intimitated by them. As a result, they stay on budget and keep their finances in line. Sinc! ! e finances can be one of the major areas of conflict in marriage, the meek person usually does not have this problem and, therefore, has a stronger marriage because of being meek.

This book should be read by anyone interested in balanced emotional and mental health and how to achieve it. In my opinion, business managers, teachers, and parents are among those the book will help. It would be especially helpful for psychology majors in college (great for those papers or extra credit projects) and professionals in the counseling and mental health field.

commuting on the railroad ferries
co-author raymond baxter's authentic deckhand stories blend well with the historic photos and brief histories of the railroad ferry companies. dispatching of the chambers street boats had been "dumped" somewhere over the years on the gatemen. Once the rush hour ferry Youngstown left two minutes earlier than the scheduled 5:28PM departure. As a result a large number of angry commuters missed their Erie suburban commuter trains out of Jersey City. Many interesting stories abound. The photos of the ferries and the deckhand stories enabled me to relive my years of New York commuting by train and boat. Fordham University Press deserves praise for this book.

that was the way to go
There was always the view of the busy harbor-ocean liners, freighters, tugs and barges. In the hot summer months there was always a breeze on the open deck. During heavy fogs there were close calls-making the trip a real adventure. This authenic book brought back good memories of my days commuting on the railroad ferries of the Hudson. The many rare photos and the short histories of the ferry operators add to the local color, and increase the value of this book.

"The Ransom of Red Chief"!!!!

This book was so funny. I absolutely loved it.
I had to read this last year for my English class, and thought that it was going to be just another lame story like all the other "classics" the public schools make us read. But when I got into it I was pleasently surprized. I couldn't stop laughing. The story is about two men who kidnap the local millionare's heir. But get more than they bargoned for. Instead of a well behaved rich kid they get a wild, red-haired hellion, that insists on playing Indians, and sacres one of his kidnappers so much that they finnally take him back to his father, thinking that they'll just get rid of him then and there. Well, instead of a reward the kid's father says that if they pay him a hundred or so dollars he'll keep his son back for a while and he won't tell the neighbors that they brought him back until nightfall. What happens next will surprize you and make you laugh. It was so much fun to read, I would suggest it to anyone that wants to read something really funny, it'll just make your day.

Beautiful book ... a must have for Chandler fans.
I bought this book a few years ago after happening across it on the internet. What a beautiful book. The selections are well-chosen and the photos are unreal. Buy it. You won't regret it.

Hardboiled, and hard to put down!
A goldmine for any fan of Chandler's Marlowe novels and short stories, I couldn't put this book down. It finally gave context to the vistas I had only been able to imagine previously, and I'll never be able to pick up any hard boiled detective story set in Los Angeles without flashing on the images painstakingly chosen to be included in this volume by Ward and Silver. An invaluable asset to any Chandler and noir fan.
