One of Edward Packard's best CYOA books
I used to love these books as a kid, and even though invariably thought that those by Edward Packard were the best. This was my third favorite book, behind two other Edward Packard CYOA books Hyperspace and Survival At Sea. This book is only book in the series that also features a unique "special ending" that cannot be encountered through normal decision making. Can you stumble upon paradise?? Get the book to find out!

Recommended for anybody who enjoys the Choose Your Own Adventure genre, and especially for kids who enjoy science fiction.

THE MOTHER OF ALL BOOKS!!!!!
The greatest book ever.

Compelling reasons to read this book ...
If you're a U.S. company that is not doing international business you might wonder why even bother with ISO 9000-3. While I can make compelling arguments for and against software and technical services companies pursuing registration, my stance would be dependent upon a set of conditions. With respect to applying the elements of ISO 9001 in accordance with guidelines for software development, supply and maintenance set forth in ISO 9000-3 I can only argue for.

The book: The first three chapters are brief and take only 24 pages to set the context. Chapter 1 introduces ISO 9000 as an international standard, discusses the relationship between 9001 and 9000-3, and gives good advice on the semantics of 9001's "shalls" and 9000-3's "shoulds". The next chapter provides an overview of software engineering and key elements in which 9000-3 will support. Chapter 3 discusses theory, concept, interpretation and critique of ISO 9000-3.

Chapter 4 comprehensively covers scope and overview, and provides a framework for the rest of the book. The key areas discussed in this chapter are the quality system framework, life cycle activities and supporting activities. Taken together these areas encompass ISO 9000-3. Chapters 5 through 23 are each devoted to a single area, giving you sufficient detail to understand the issues and factors. What I like most is the way the authors skillfully describe the contents of ISO 9000-3 guidelines in a readable manner without introducing ambiguity. Making specifications readable without introducing fuzziness or uncertainty is one of the most difficult aspects of technical writing and the authors manage this well.

An added bonus, and the reason I like this book so much, is the quality handbook that is provided in chapter 24. Including the eleven attachments, each of which in an invaluable artifact itself, this chapter is 50 pages in length (about 20% of the book), and serves as one of the best examples of a quality manual you'll find.

So, why even bother? First, you do not need to pursue ISO 9001 registration to benefit from this book (and if you are, you need to get a book on the ISO 9000:2000 version to get up-to-speed). If you are using the capability maturity model as a goal, the procedures given in this book map nicely to CMM process areas and practices. Moreover, in the "e" world where supply chain management is one of the current buzz words, the focus of 9000-3 might be a good fit into your operational posture (whether as a developer/integrator or service provider) because ISO 9000-3 is slanted towards the customer-supplier relationship, whereas the CMM is more concerned with suppliers. The real reason, however, for using 9000-3 guidelines is they will assure you of attaining repeatability in all of your key processes related to applications or service delivery, and will lay the foundation for any additional quality paradigm or framework you deploy in the future.

ISO 9000-3 : Good book to have
Very practical, easy to implement the ISO standards, practices and processes. If you are planning to register for this standards, the book will be good hand-book.

A great family tradition
When my now 22-31 year old children were very small...I stumbled across this book. Each night before dinner, we did the reading and prayer, and placed the ornament on a bare branch taken from one of our trees. Some nights were harder than others to make the time, (and to try to make sure that the beginning readers didn't have the longest and hardest readings!), but until they reached the college years, we did it! It is one of my fondest memories, as well as theirs. Now, I'm buying copies for their families...the roots grow deep when you plant with love.

One of the best Advent books
The Jesse tree is a "tree" decorated with symbols of the forbearers of Jesus. They provide a devotion through Advent that teaches (or reminds one of) the Old Testament stories. There is no set group of stories that constitute an official Jesse tree, which allows the creative to adjust the tradition to meet specific needs. For those of us who need help with the art, this is an excellent collection with art that can be cut out and hung (the devotion will appear on the back of the ornament) or can be used in book form, simply leaving the appropriate symbol visible for the day. Of course, there are as many other options as those using the booklet can invent. The booklet also suggests which symbols should be omitted when Advent is less than its maximum length.

For each symbol a scriptural reading is suggested, a short reflection is given as is a final prayer.

Symbols include: the Jesse tree, the birth of life, Adam and Eve, Noah and the flood, Father Abraham, Isaac and the ram, Jacob and his dream, a symbol of prophecy, Jospeh and his coat, Moses and the law, the blessing of Aaron, Samuel and the Word of the Lord, David, symbol of shepherds, the wisdom of Solomon, Elijah and the Raven, Elisha and healing, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Nehemiah the builder, angels, Zechariah and Elizabeth, Virgin Mary, Magnificat, the birth of John the Baptizer, Joseph of Nazareth, the symbol of Bethlehem and the birth of the Lord.

My only quibble with the list is that, in keeping with the geneology of Matthew, I would like to see Ruth included.

Great fun
In addition to being a teaching tool, this book is also great fun! A friend of mine who teaches in kindergarten paired it with Jack and the Beanstalk, reading the standard version first so the children had a particular image of the giant in their minds, and then reading this book, about a time when the giant is an old man. The children loved it! The illustrations are wonderful, from Jim carrying a giant-sized pair of glasses to the fully outfitted giant at the end. Afterwards, the children did a good job of comparing and contrasting the two stories. A great book!

Jim Teaches Morals!
As a first grade teacher, I have used this book for many years when faced with the task of teaching my students about respect, honesty, and good-samaritanism!

I have yet to meet a 6 year old who's not heard of Jack and the Beanstalk. But, what happened to the giant after Jack took his gold and his beloved hen (goose)?

Jack was a thief, but Jim is a delightful young man who wants nothing more than to help the poor, pessimistic giant he's encountered.

This is a heartwarming story which can be extended by both parents and teachers to enrich a child's understanding and acceptence of others.

forgetting
One thing I have learnt from reading j.k. is that my searching is in fact escaping.. from no depths and from no hights will we recieve nor discover anything that can make us free. we already are as free as we see ourselves fit to be. escaping and compensating with new points of wiews under the false pretence that you have "matured" over time is wonderfull however, because it keeps you occupied, and tucks away the creeping feeling that you're missing something. and the doubts and the fears, the urge to become and overcome,- it keeps sticking to you, so you start wanting it. that is our balance-act. take it too seriously and you'll feel more dead than alive.

nobody can teach except yourself
i have read almost all the books of j.k.His writings helped me to question myself and explore the complexity within myself. i'm still going on reading his books repeatedly to get self-knowledge and deep insight.

If you could only have one recipe book...
I'm a Paris-based Brit, and a very keen (French) amateur chef. For the past twenty years I have used Raymond Oliver's classic almost exclusively (even the finickiest of my French guests come back for more). It's a wonderful compendium, all the basic techniques are well explained and the recipes range from the simplest to the most extravagant. I regularly refuse requests to lend it out (its out of print in French)! Parfait...

The best "Learning" cookbook in an inudated market
Raymond Oliver was a Chef of immense proportions (with respect to his ability to teach the art) who understood the nature of food. His inovations in teaching techniques were far ahead of their time. He was so well respected that Chefs (such as Jaques Pepin) actually copied his style in preparing thir own cookbooks. His step by step photos of preparation were clear and made those of us who were learning the art actually "understand" how our hands needed to move to accomplish the recipes. To those who do not cook, this will mean nothing. But to those of us who use our hands as our tools...and who use food to express a position in the world of art and culinary creativity, Raymond Oliver got us past the basics into the realm of art quickly and expertly..so that today..any ease with which we complete our tasks is owed solely to his expert techniques..and his ability to pass that on to us, as if we were at the table with him. If you own a cookbook library..this should be in it.

A great book about a great person
Ray Scheele does a wonderful job of capturing the life of Larry Conrad, a true public servant. The reader is left wishing that all our elected officials embodied the same qualities that Conrad did, regardless of political affiliation.

Life of A Leader
This is an outstanding account of the life of one of the thousands of Americans whose public service nurishes and sustains the nation. Raymond Scheel has not only captured the contributions of a good and effective local and state leader, Larry Conrad, but he also places Conrad in context and makes clear why such men are important. Scheele has mastered an impressive amount of material, including extensive personal interviews. This book is an interpretation as well as an account of Conrad's lfe in crystal clear language.

Sad and lonely boy wanders/wonders through college
Sad and funny and beautiful, Queneau watches the world and portrays the smallest of things in the most unique way. Celebrating the simpleton, Queneau looks back at his student years. His head is stuck in books. He meets few friends. Outside, the world swindles and connives and lies and quips. Outsiders take note, this book settles long after the last page is turned. A special, special book. A great introduction to the world of Queneau.

The Last Days by Raymond Queneau
This novel (Queneau's second after "Le Chiendent" translated as 'the Bark Tree' by Barbara Wright) is a charming, witty novel about the travails of several French students preparing for their "bacheau" admirably cointerpointed with a secondary story of a petty swindler and a tertiary story of a waiter who comfabulates a fantastic betting schema based on the movements of the lunary planets and their shifts and motion. The deft translation gives the full flavor of the novel, and Queneau's writing is superbly sunny and wonderful. This is a must read for all those interested in the development of the French novel c. 1930-s to 1940-s. It's quite funny!
