I liked the characters because they were funny and nice.
The characters say funny stuff like "Ahhh, there's a werewolf after me." Eating ice cream with a werewolf isn't any fun! The boy reminds me of my cousin, Webster. Whatever you do, don't eat ice cream with a werewolf!!

If you like Hollywood name-droppers, this one is for you!
Having just recently discovered Phyllis A. Whitney, I must admit she has conquered another loyal reader. A young woman almost conquered by a cruel husband flees with her son to save herself and her son from his cruelty. She runs to her great aunt's very secure fortress. But there she finds her safety in doubt as well as her aunt's, a former Hollywood star who quit the scene after her last movie entitled "Mirage." The secrets of the aunt's past coupled with the cruelty of the husband throws our heroine into many neat twists. The denoument is so very clever. As I read I found myself really getting into the mysteries of the star, but at the same time the tribulations of her niece were so complex and real. Once I started I had a hard time putting the novel down. Thank you Mrs. Whitney for some interesting reading while I sunned myself at the beach. I am ready for another installment of mystery and intrigue.

Emperors, Swords, Pentacles

Incomparable science fiction...
The story opens with a scene out of classic high drama: the young and beloved Emperor has been taken captive by the allies of his jealous twin brother, whose deformities of birth have left him jealous and scheming for the throne. Of course, this being the complex and colorful future universe of Phyllis Gotlieb, the setting is the planet Qsaprinel and the Emperor Spinel-alpha and all his subjects are large crustaceans of a philosophical bent, and there is more to the situation than meets the Emperor's compound eye. A conspiracy revolving around an enigmatic enzyme found in the bodies of the Qsaprinli and the rumors of an illegal human colony hidden somewhere on the world's single continent has entangled the planet; on the Emperor's request it falls to Dun Kinnear, Sector Co-ordinator and class-two ESP, to untangle the mystery and defend Qsaprinel from its attackers.

"Emperor, Swords, Pentacles" is not a direct sequel to "A Judgement of Dragons," as it can be read without any prior knowledge of Gotlieb's world, but fans of the earlier novel will enjoy the reappearance of familiar characters and races. Where the main characters of "A Judgement of Dragons" were Khreng and Prandra, two members of a catlike, telepathic race known as the Ungrukh, here shifting viewpoints highlight various sets of characters who gradually join together as the story nears its conclusions. Khreng and Prandra's daughter Emerald makes an appearance as a protagonist in her own right; together with her lover Raanung, she will join Kinnear in detective work and defense. It's a tough task for the characters, but a delight for the reader. Every facet of Gotlieb's universe is fully detailed, comprehensible and believable, the scope of her imagination is breathtaking. The book is a joy to read. (The title, as well as all the chapter headings, derive from the names of the cards in a Tarot pack. Similarly, a Tarot reading serves as the framework for the story.) I had long been a fan of "A Judgement of Dragons" without knowing that it had a sequel; having found "Emperor, Swords, Pentacles" lurking on the shelf of a used book store, I was delighted. Being out of print this book might be hard to find outside of libraries, but those who have enjoyed Gotlieb's other works will find the effort well worth the expense: this is science fiction like Cordwainer Smith wrote science fiction (and for those of you who don't know who he is, you have another delight in store) and a sheer delight of a book.

Every quiltemaker must own this book....
I have been a quiltmaker for 6 years now, but have yet to become a good quilter until I read this book. In just one evening, I was able to draft a border pattern using the box from Stovetop Stuffing and draw it on my current quilt project, a double 9-patch. I actually teach quilting but never got very intricate with my quilting stitches. I can now do feathers and cables with ease. I will refer to this book forever and will never need another for designing quilting patterns and getting ideas for future quilts. This book is entirely focused on the quilting stitches where most quilting books give you that info. as an afterthought. Thanks Phyllis D. Miller! I will now have some real heirlooms for my children.

Good for paralegals too
This book is considered a text, but I've given it to my paralegal staff to use as a brush-up/refresher course in contract law. It's well written and covers the essentials of the area in a solid progression of topics.

Caring-based ethics for community practice
This text is highly relevant to anyone involved with elder care in community settings. Care managers and home care givers will particularly benefit from the comprehensive discussions of topics such as paid family caregivers, prejudice in home care, multigenerational households, the ethical importance of home care and organizational ethics. As a researcher interested in quality of life in the elderly and as a facilitator of ethics consultations in a care management organization, I found the content highly relevant to everyday practice. It is an invaluable reference.
