Abominable snowmen: legend come to life; the story of sub-humans on five continents from the early ice age until today
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: Ivan Terence Sanderson
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $19.95
Average review score:

Entertaining, but not enlightening
This book is an novelty piece for those interested in Cryptozoology, as it was among the very first books published on the matter and managed to bring attention to the entire Abominable Snowman phenomena, however, it is unresearched and laregly based on heresay. It leans towards sensationalizing the story to a point where it reads as though it was published by the Weekly World News.

Still, it is entertaining.

Myths are fun.....right?
This book caught my attention at the local library because of the astonishingly moving illustration on the front cover. If you have the money to spare, buy this book, rip off the front cover, crop it down and frame it. Well, maybe not.

Honestly, though, my congratulations to the cover artist.

Unfortunately, none of the interior art is half as good. From the cover I was hoping for a new insights on the old stories (or at least accurate ones!), a deep reverence for the culture and its beliefs, and a passion for their beauty. Most of the interior work is far more insipid, and the way the artifacts are presented felt too sterile.

It was nice to see myths and history side by side, but I honestly felt it could have been done in a fashion less suited to academics and more in tune with the actual heartbeat of a religion and culture that is only as dead as our imaginations. (Children are far more willing to dream and understand than grown-ups give them credit for, and they deserve books that honor that).

The Bisexual Spouse
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (May, 1989)
Authors: Ivan Hill and Judd Marmor
Amazon base price: $7.95
Used price: $2.05
Average review score:

Not very useful; book suffers from mislabeling
As a bisexual who hopes to enter into - if not marriage, then some sort of more or less permanent civil/domestic partnership - with the right person at some point in time, I was very interested in this book. Unfortunately, it was rather disappointing.

The first part consists of interviews with six so-called "bisexual couples", four women, and four men. The second part is the statistical breakdown of a survey which was administered to psychiatrists and sex therapists to get an idea of their viewpoints on homosexuality.

The problem with this book is definitely inaccurate labeling. Only one of the couples could be considered bisexual, at least by my definition - in the other five, one of them partners discovered that they were not heterosexual. Having once been married, or continuing to be married on paper only, doesn't make you bisexual.

The individual interviews were more useful. Two of the women interviewed were what I would consider to be bisexuals, i.e. being attracted to men and women simultaneously. Another was a heterosexual turned lesbian, and the fourth was married to a man who could be called bisexual - he was attracted to men, and the only woman who interested him sexually was his wife.

The men interviewed were a man like the one described in the preceding paragraph, a straight man married to a bisexual woman, a bisexual man married to a bisexual woman, and a gay man who had had various affairs with married men (who usually did not identify as bisexual).

This book has only minimal usefulness if you are married to a bisexual or are yourself a bisexual. It would be more useful if you are married to a person who has recently realized they're not heterosexual and know that your marriage is going to end.

The study that makes up Part Two will not be of interest to most lay persons. To someone doing a historical study of perspectives on sexuality among the mental health professions, it might be useful.

Dmitri Shostakovich, The Man And His Work (Music Book Index)
Published in Library Binding by Reprint Services Corp (January, 1947)
Author: Ivan Ivanovich Martynov
Amazon base price: $69.00
Average review score:

Not a book for those with an in interest in music or history
This book was composed prior to Shostakovich's death by, it would appear, a Party hack. As such, the book contains minimal information or insight on Shostakovich's life and music, but does make a fascinating example of Soviet political criticism. In reading of the various "excesses" and "natural beauties" in Shostakovich's oeuvre, one really gets a feel for the oppressiveness of the Soviet cultural atmosphere in which the composer labored.

Egypt Revisited: Journal of African Civilizations
Published in Paperback by Transaction Pub (December, 1990)
Author: Ivan Van Sertima
Amazon base price: $20.00
Used price: $10.95
Average review score:

A Poorly Written Book On An Intriguing Topic
The topic of the book is extremely interesting. The authors write about African roots of Ancient Egyptean civilization and its influence on that of Ancient Greece.

The quality of articles varies. "Ancient Egyptians: The Dark Red Race Myth" by James Brunson and "Black Rulers of the Golden Age" by Legrand Clegg II, for example, are well researched and presented. Some other authors, like Cheikh Anta Diop and Wayne Chandler, provide scant evidence to support their ideas and make sweeping generalizations. Theophile Obengs seems to care less about describing African philosophy of the Pharaonic period than to asserting supremacy of Egyptian cosmogony over that of all other peoples.

Illustrations are black and white and of low quality. Brunson's article references figures, but the figures appear not to be numbered. Diop's notes are hard to interpret, maybe because the bibliography list is missing. Hierogliphs are so small that they are almost unreadable. It may be solely the editor's fault, though.

Overall, the book doesn't do justice to the topic. If you are interested in the subject, borrow it from a library, but dont' waste your money buying it.

More Than "I Do": Devotions for the Engaged Couple
Published in Paperback by Beacon Hill Press (June, 1983)

More than "I'm surprised!"
I was hoping for a book that would help engaged couples draw closer to each other spiritually. There seems to be a great lack of devotionals for engaged couples and I was excited to be getting one. We don't have much that we can do with our wedding being a year and four months off, and with temptations high and trying to stay strong, we were hoping for something that would draw us closer to God as a couple and give us a good starting basis for being married. Instead we found a book that goes through the wedding vows and really does nothing for the couple themselves. I wish that there had been a review so I would have known more about this book. If you are looking to better understand the vows, this is a great book. If you want to draw into a closer spiritual intimacy with your future mate, this is not for you!

Disappointed...
It is obvious after reading this book that the author has not even heard Farrakhan speak or at least did not listen with an open mind.

I doubt that the author has even been to the mosque to hear any of the ministers.

If you have an opinion on the Nation of Islam, it is better to hear a speech first hand or talk directly to a member. Save your money by not buying this book.

Looking for Farrakhan.
Levinsohn, has an intelligent mind and a good knowledge of race relations in the United States, but she remains captive to a far-left mentality that distorts her understanding of this subject (poor black women in search of domestic work she terms "victims") as well as international politics (the Kuwait conflict she dubs "George Bush's curious war against Iraq"). Her ignorance sometimes causes her needlessly to speculate about well-known facts (such as the physical characteristics of the NOI founder, W. D. Fard, whose huge portrait has graced many of the movement's public events). She repeats old mistakes (that Farrakhan was expected to succeed Elijah Muhammad, that Malcolm X was more powerful than Elijah Muhammad) and initiates new ones (Farrakhan never mentions in speeches the old NOI goal of a separate black state, that the NOI does not follow up on its threats of violence).

Despite these shaky underpinnings, Levinsohn does offer insights to help decipher Farrakhan, showing the role of his family's West Indies background and explaining the "aura of madness" that surrounds him. She calls him "the most influential man in the black world" but also "one of the shrewdest opportunists in recent history," someone who "doesn't care" about such issues as job training and the problems of the black poor. Instead, his "interest is in building a great and strong Nation of Islam, with branches wherever there are black people."

You can't win
I bought this book for a friend and found that it was not a good book to send to her. The book talks about what you can do while you are waiting for the right one to come along. What it doesn't seem to point out is that some times the right one won't come along. Sometimes you are meant to be alone. If you are looking for a book to prop up your coffee table with this might work.

A course textbook
This book looks like it was done originally as a textbook or workbook for a welding course. I found the information to be fairly simplistic and out of date.
