splendid optics
I really enjoy reading this book. It is very high quality book. It tries to cover all the aspects for the optical components for the fiber communication. The different chapters are covered by real experts in their own field. Many chapter author are actual pioneers for the field they covered. I like this point very much.

reading this book, I feel go through the history of optical component. There are so many ideas developed in the past and there are so many progresses made in the past ten years. It is such a splendid and brilliant optics. Given the optic industry is in very bad shape now, I would say this book really show the spirit of optics.

This book also cover many newer area, such as gain clamped amplifier, not only for EDFA, such as very high speed receiver, not only common detectors.

An excellent addition...
This 02/03 yearbook, which is designed to keep the biannual Penguin Guide to Classical Music, is similar to its excellent forebears, and even has some improvements. Of particular note is that DVDs are now included with CDs in the ratings rather than being segregated in its own section in back. I would like to see Penguin continue this format when it publishes its 04 guide next year.

Average review score:

The best biography of Philippe II
Taking his invencible "Armada" all over the world, making war with England, France, the Netherlands, the arabs, son of Charles V, married four times, putting his son in prision etc. Philippe II its the most powerfull king that has ever exsisted, he took his holy war all over Europe to put his "order". I loved this book and i really recommended to everybody, its just great, Cloulas takes us to those years with a great description of the events, 10 stars instead of five.

Prag/Text in German

Beautiful photo-based coffee table book!
I wanted a photographic memorium to remind me of my wonderful trip to Prague; the best compilation I found was this book. True, the text is in German, but that just means that I'll probably never know what the introduction means. The book truly is 95% photos. This is a beautiful compilation. The only thing I wish there were more of are outdoor photographs. There are many indoor photos of the old buildings, etc. - oddly enough, most of them containing clocks. Granted, an entire photography book could be compiled of this alone - however I would have loved a few more outdoor shots to remind me of the beautiful landscape of this riverfront medieval city. All in all, a beautiful and heartfelt study of the city through photographic imagery.

The Precipice
Published in Hardcover by Ardis Publishers (March, 1994)
Authors: Laury Magnus, Boris Jakim, and Ivan Aleksandrovich Goncharov
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $62.35
Average review score:

Underrated And Unjustly Obscure
Poor Ivan Goncharov! He was fated to become the Salieri of 19th century Russian literature. Thematic similarities between _The Precipice_, which he regarded as his masterwork, and _Fathers and Sons_, which Turgenev rightly regarded as his, led to a falling-out between the two authors, friends until then.

Yet _The Precipice_ is, perhaps because of its slightly campy air to modern audiences, a very enjoyable read today. It features:

--characters with programmatic names decodable to those with a basic knowledge of Russian (for example, the heroine is "Vera," or "Faith"; the bad-boy protagonist is "Volkov," or "Wolf");

--a plot containing seduction, betrayal, redemption, and secrets of the generation of elders (there's more implied sex here than in all of Turgenev);

--serious discussion of ideas that were to set Russia afire within fifty years, much as did _Fathers and Sons_.

Not as challenging, perhaps, as Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, Goncharov is far from a waste of time for the reader with an interest in the impact of philosophy on literature in the nineteenth century. Read it if you can find it.

Prince Serebryani: An Historical Novel of the Times of Ivan the Terrible and of the Conquest of Sibe

Authors: Alexei Tolstoy and Alexis Tolstoi Count Alexis Tolstoi
Amazon base price: $29.95

Author's name - correction
Count Alexis Tolstoi (Aleksei Konstantinovich Tolstoi) was born in St. Petersburg in 1817. The author described in Editorial Reviews is another person (also a Russian writer) - Aleksei Nikolaevich Tolstoi.
The author of "Prince Serebryani" (a Historical Novel of the Times of Ivan the Terrible and of the Conquest of Siberia) could not return to Russia in 1923 after the Bolshevik Revolution, because he (A.K. Tolstoi) died in 1875.
