An insightful, intelligent and rewarding review of Weldon.
If you have any interest in Wewldon, then Ms Faulks' book is a must for your collection. This is a stirring, delightful review of Weldon. Faulks clearly loves her subject matter and her writing shows a real sensitivity to the nuances--and pleasures--of Weldon's prose. I personally have little time for literary criticism and was surprised at how much I enjoyed this when it was given to me for my birthday.

Outstanding!
What a beautiful delightful book. A host of great recipes for anyone who enjoys vegtables and fruits. There are numerous vegetable stew and vegetable soup recipes that can easily be adjusted for whatever produce you have. Fantastic hot and cold soups and several healthy gazpacho like dishes that will make your mouth water. The full color photos are so colorful; the food so fresh looking that they seem to leap from the pages. Everything looks so delicious. Even those who are not vegetarians will like this book because it makes you want to eat more vegtables. A wide range of veggies are featured cooked numerous ways or not at all. Colorful salads and fruits.
This book is not just about light dishes either. There are some very rich cheese recipes including an very easy to follow souffle recipe. Try the three cheese pie or the brie fritters. The deserts are equally wonderful with an emphasis on fresh fruits. Everything you could ask for is here on how to use your garden to make wonderful delicious meals.
The only draw back is that no vegetable broth recipe is provided even though it is used in many of these recipes. Vegetable broth isn't complicated but it would be nice to get a good recipe for it.

"JIFs" or Freedom Fighters?
The Indian National Army, and its operations with the Japanese in the Burma theatre of operations during World War II, was long a controversial subject between Indians and British, and generally regarded with curmudgeonly disapproval by the British. The fact is that the issue of collaboration was probably more complicated in the Asia-Pacific theatre than it was in the European theatre. Experiencing the colonial rule of the British, French, and Dutch, many Burmese, Malays, Vietnamese, Sumatrans and Javanese saw the Japanese as colonial liberators. Even in the Philippines, under an allegedly benign American rule, much of the legislature stayed on to work under the Japanese. The Germans, of course, used peoples like the Lithuanians and Ukrainians in order to carry out the "Final Solution", but the situation was somewhat different. Asian nationalists struggling for independence, largely along lines laid for them by Western educations, found themselves betrayed by Western colonial empires who were committed to holding on at all cost (or so they thought until 1942). Fay's book provides a case study of one of the most famous (or notorious) instances of collaboration in the Asia-Pacific theatre. He examines the history of the Indian National Army (derogatorily referred to by the British as "JIFs"--Japanese Indian Forces) through an INA perspective, specifically in interviews with Prem and Lakshmi Sahgal, a husband and wife who found themselves in Singapore in 1942 when the British surrendered to the Japanese--Prem as a captured officer, and Lakshmi as a doctor. Both, disillusioned and fed up with years of British promises of independence that grew consciously or unconsciously caught up in red tape and official footdragging, decided to join the Japanese-affiliated force of Indian soldiers that would reclaim India for the Indians. The rest of the story should be read through their words, providing a much needed other side to the story of the Indian struggle for independence.

The Art of Friendship
This short little gift book consists of verses and prose that praise the relationship of being true friends. Some of the verses are the original work of the author and some are from well known sources such as George Eliot and John Keats. I felt the pages full of words that spoke directly to my heart and soul and made me glad that I was a friend to others. I liked the way it expresses the importance and joy of having a faithful friend and found that is the perfect item to give instead of a card to a friend on a special occasion.

A great read and a wonderful first novel...
Vivid metaphors, a complex narrative, rich characters, and keen observation of life in small towns at the bottom of the plains all come together beautifully in this first novel, which I recommend highly. Short, smart, and accessible, it would make a fine assigned reading for a course on the modern American west or in women studies.

Highly recommended for anyone who ever skiied Colorado!
Skiing is a sport that has been popular since the latter part of the 19th century. Abbott Fay has painstakingly researched the history of what originally was developed as a means of survival in snow country, but evolved into one of America's most popular winter sports. In A History Of Skiing In Colorado, Fay recounts the history of skiing in one of the country's most popular skiing regions with an informative, "reader friendly" text that is enhanced with photographs. A History Of Skiing In Colorado is highly recommended reading for all ski enthusiasts and anyone who has ever strapped them on for downhill or cross-country skiing on the slopes or through the wildness of Colorado.
