Contemporary Philosophy of Social Science: A Multicultural Approach (Contemporary Philosophy (Cambridge, Mass.), 1,)
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Publishers (October, 1996)
Author: Brian Fay
Amazon base price: $66.95
Average review score:

Readable, groundbreaking, textbook
Other introductory texts in the philosophy of the social sciences tend to concentrate on rational-agent models and the classic debates over the place of nomothetic (law-based) explanations in the human sciences. This book is the first to offer a genuinely introductory account of the philosophical problems involved in interpretative social science, i.e. social science geared towards gaining an understanding of the meaning of other people's actions. Fay manages to explain practically all of the important issues involved, weaving them into a fairly natural progression of ideas that arise from the the decision to try to understand the speech and actions of someone belonging to a different culture or historical period (see the table of contents on the book's webpage for details).

My only complaint regarding the book is that it does not really offer enough of an overview of the structure and history of the debates surrounding the ideas it explains - who said what and in which intellectual context.

A book that will touch your heart!
RISKS ... Jennie Andrews is a woman who's determined to make it on her own. She's coping with the struggles of being a widow, with teen sons and with a relatively new business. Peter Kynaston, her and her husband's best friend, is back in her life. This is an amazing story of risks . . . can a person risk his or her heart when there is a very deep connection, that of being best friends? Can they risk the chance of blending two very different lives? I applaud Ms. Cameron for writing a story that contains the real emotionalism behind raising a family.
A MAN LIKE MAC ... Oh my God. With those three words, I closed my eyes and closed this book. Keely Wilson, devastated by an accident that threatened her career as an Olympic runner, turns to her first love, her former college coach Mac McCandless for training. This story is amazing combination of characters, emotions and experiences that are sure to touch every reader. Ms. Robinson has put together a wonderful book that teaches us a lot about loving someone with a disability. Both RISKS by Stella Cameron, and A MAN LIKE MAC by Fay Robinson are very worthy reads.

Brutal and frightening! Very highly recommended
A brutal serial killer murders young mothers, slashing their uterus with the precision of a surgeon, and killing their children as well. Named Bloody-Shoes by the media, the killer ruthlessly destroys life according to some sort of bizarre plan only he understands.

Midwife at the Jordan Martin Center, Joanna Michaels loves her work, which affords her opportunity to seek out Dr. Kevin Willman. Abrupt and bordering on rude, there's something strangely attractive about the young intern. Perhaps it is his unconventionality. Perhaps it is because his brooding melancholy and brilliance result in a fascinating difference from the staid security of most men she's encountered. Whatever the reason, Joanna underestimates the danger and perversions he represents.

Joanna practically forces a relationship with Kevin. Drawn to the challenge of rescuing someone who obviously needs help, Joanna doesn't see the pathological problems concealed behind those burning, intense eyes. When Kevin attempts suicide, the act draws them together, as if she's somehow responsible for keeping him alive even after his wrists heal. He never tells her what tortures him, what drives him to such deep despair. At last, after two years, Joanna leaves Kevin. She carefully conceals her pregnancy in fear of his threatening words, "If I ever find out you're pregnant, I'll do more than just walk out on you."

Rather than a "who done it", CRADLE WILL FALL explores the murky world of a serial killer and gristly path that leads to his acts of violence. There's no question for the reader as to who the killer is; rather the author does build intense fascination for this character. I must admit to wanting to yell at the heroine to get away from the suicidal maniac, but I suppose her need for the unusual does explain why she lingers too long in such a destructive relationship. Indeed, her growth past the need for such a relationship gives Joanna depth, allowing her to become a very sympathetic and capable character. Also, the characterization of Kevin is compelling, and frightening as each layer is stripped away revealing his sordid past. Indeed, CRADLE WILL FALL is a mesmerizing exploration of the macabre and chilling, and promises to keep readers up way past bedtime -- with the lights on! Highly recommended.

Chronicles of King Arthur told from the correct prospective,
A marvelous collection of five books (or one Omnibus)telling Morgan the Fay's story in the tails of King Arthur. Four books cleverly recount the life of Morgan through the eyes of different people in her ilfe. The last book is Morgan's own version of the story and answer to the first four books ant the traditional tails. Daughter of Tintagel is a definate must for all those intrested in the Arthurian tails, especialy those who feel that morgan was hard done by. Definatly the best of ALL the stories dealing with King Arthur!

Prayerfully Entertaining
I received this book as a present and enjoyed it very much. While it read easily like a novel (which it is) it was also very prayerful and meditative. It is not a "heavy" book it is a light book with a "heavy" impact. I love the drawings as well!

Tasty idiosyncracies
This is my all-time favorite cookbook, treasured because it features ingredient combinations unheard-of elsewhere -- and they taste great.
It's worth the buy just to browse the titles of the recipes - Rose wine and white plum jelly, rhubarb snow with raspberries, fresh figs with toasted goat cheese, spiced banana croissants.
The book features soups, appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts, a "garland" of mouth-watering sauces, and fruit beverages.
The author is apparently Anglo-French. He's opinionated, idiosyncratic, and given to vegetarian-izing and lightening traditional recipes. But what tasty idiosyncracies!
Think you won't love the Pumpkin and Potato Bake with green grapes and Brie? Wait till you try it. My guests always beg for more (I never tell them what's in it till they've sample it.)
This is not Joy of Cooking. The recipes are given in Imperial and American versions, and sometimes a bit gets lost in the translation. What's lamb's lettuce? What's castor sugar?
But if you're a creative cook in search of inspiration, there's plenty to find in this rare gem of a cookbook.

Fantastic Frogs!
This book is a great way to introduce frogs to young children. The rhyming text keeps children's interest and still manages to give accurate information about the life cycle and behavior of frogs. The illustrations of 33 different kinds of frogs are colorful, appealing, and realistic. As a Hello Reader! book, it is accurately leveled for Kindergarten - Second Grade. A great introduction to a thematic unit.

An honest review!
I was impressed by the details of early problems and the way solutions to them by the company were presented.
