Fine Arms and Armor: Treasures in the Dresden Collection

"Sheer artistic exhuberance"
Dresden's Historisches Museum holds one of three great world collections of armor, the other two being in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna and the Real Ameria, Madrid. Schobel and Karpinski are to be highly congratulated for this fine work that contains stunning full-page color plates plus black-and-white photos with superlative tonal gradations, a total of 180 illustrations. Each chapter is followed by generously annotated notes and precise historical identifications of pieces collected between the 16th and 18th centuries and that belonged to great European families. Recommended for any library by reason of sheer artistic exhuberance, or for the true connoisseur and collector of arms and armor.

Funklenkpanzer, A History of German Army Remote- and Radio-Controlled Armor Units
Published in Hardcover by J J Fedorowicz Pub (01 January, 2001)
Authors: Markus Jaugitz and David Johnston
Amazon base price: $99.00
Average review score:

An outstanding armour book
Powerhouse publishing firm JJ Fedorowicz have done it again. This 610 page behemoth contains over 800 photos in a large 9" x 12" format and covers everything you ever wanted to know about the "Funks" but were afraid to ask.

Coverage begins with a technical analysis of the various radio controlled demolition vehicles. Author Marcus Jaugitz guides the reader through the various Borgward, NSU and Goliath models employed by the Germans. Also interesting is the information on the Schwimmwagen 129 modified for demolition service, although it wasn't selected for use in service, this is interesting nonetheless.

The next portion of the book covers the early units which used the sdkfz 265 (Panzer I kleine Befelspanzer) as control vehicles. A large number of images are included in this section and they are of excellent quality and mostly unpublished.

The book then moves on to cover Pz. Abt 300 and 301with their panzer III control tanks. Photo coverage is spectacular consisting of large clear images that are usually only 2 per page (considering that this is a large format book, this makes images that are larger than some full page photos in smaller format publications).

Being a StuG fan, the next 300 pages or so are the highlight of the book as literally hundreds of images of StuG III Ausf G are featured in various situations. Also included are some images of a 3 ton Maultier using a Borgward truck and sdkfz 11 running gear. Only 2 of these were produced, nice to have them caught on film. Also of interest are image of Ferdinands which served or trained alongside these units. Also included are some particularly nasty images of the fighting during the Warsaw uprising,

Tiger unit coverage is excellent with some great action shots as well as detail photos clearly showing the antennae arrangement.

Throughout the book there are numerous organisational organigrams which are very nicely done. The book concludes with 30 pages of nice colour plates from Jean Restayn, handy stuff for the modeller or historian.

It's particularly difficult to give a really comprehensive summary of the material covered in a book of this size, but I can only say that in this case, good things come in big packages. This book is easily as good as JJF's 653 book, in fact based on the quality of the images and the unique subject matter, I would rate this as JJF's best book yet. The sheer amount of unpublished StuG and Tiger images alone make this book essential reference material, let alone the historical value of the excellent text and Borgward coverage.

Very highly recommended.

Great Book on the 88mm Gun
The book is a winner. It has numerous photographs of the 88mm in action and is in written in a very readable manner. It is not very detailed on first hand accounts but covers nicely the combat procedure, firing procedure, command positions, etc. There is also a short chapter on technical data that is also nicely done. Overall, this is a book for 88mm gun fans to get.

Exquisite!
This is haiku at its highest level. All are gems! Keller's Japanese sumi-e ink drawings are the perfect complement to the poetry. This handsome little book is a rare treasure. I plan to give it as gifts.

Harold the Herald - a Good Teacher's Aide
Harold the Herald is a very simple and basic book about the art of heraldry. While it barely touches on the complexities of this art, it is a good book for those who are totally clueless. It is a good introduction to children, and helpful to high school students who have English teachers who live in the Shakespearean era. I found it to be helpful in explaining the different elements of heraldry to my high school students.

Knights in Shining Armor
As an heraldic artist for over 40 years and with grandchildren becoming interested in ALL things, I found this book very helpful in passing on my interests. It has helped them to become intrigued with the Knights of the Roundtable and their play now includes slaying dragons and rescuing fair maidens. They also have started asking about the various insignia in all my books on heraldry.

The illustrations brought to life the costumes and customs of the era. The story was written simply so that any young child could readily understand what the author was saying.

Thanks to Gail Gibbons for such an interesting way for children to learn.

"Knights in Shining Armor" - Korea Vets Are Not Forgotten
Besides being a great story, this book gives a good perspective on the war that not only Americans who lived through it could appreciate, but also younger folks too.

I highly recommend it.

The M3 in Depth.
This small document gives a brief, yet complete description on the M3 Lee/Grant. The photo's are all real. And are very intersting. The book even goes over the change in all design and equipment through the years. It also has summary's of the use of the M3 in war. I was able to read this from cover to cover in a matter of an hour. Great fun. This is book 33 in a series of books from squadron.

The Making of a Knight: How Sir James Earned His Armor

Excellent book for young children
I bought this book because my son (James) is very interested in the Middle Ages, King Arthur, etc. Since he is 7 years old and the book begins when Sir James is 7 years old, he really enjoyed it. The details on weapons, armor, etc. added a great touch and were not only interesting, but educational. The book contains some vocabulary which required explanation, but in general he was fascinated. The illustrations are excellent and we read a few pages at a time each night so we could discuss them in detail. I hope Mr. O'Brien writes more about the adventures of Sir James.
