LA Architect Magazine Book Reviews
In his six-decade career as a Bauhaus teacher and furniture maker, as a collaborator with Walter Gropius in London and Cambridge, and as head of his own office in New York, Breuer deserves to be ranked with the great 20th-century formgivers. And yet he never did achieve the fame of Mies, though he was far more prolific and humane, or of Gropius, though he was a much better designer. If he is remembered today it is for the Whitney Museum in Manhattan, the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, and his modern houses in New England; however, as this comprehensive survey shows, there was much more-mostly forgotten and quite out of fashion. This eloquent, handsomely illustrated volume may help to shift public perceptions and stir admiration for the architect's tough, sculptural take on modernism.

Visual History Meets Oral History
Family history takes on new meaning in Rick and Ronda Hyman's "My Texas Family: An Uncommon Journey to Prosperity." Inspired by a collection of 300 black and white photos from the early 1900s, Rick Hyman has taken on the task of painting each photo, not as a reproduction, but as a representation of the family he has known and whose history he has heard from childhood. With his wife Ronda, he has compiled the family history in this book, using some of the photos and paintings. This history, however, is more than Rick Hyman's family history. It is a slice of history that coincides with the Harlem Renaissance. But it is not a history of finery, furs, and fancy clubs. It is a history of prosperity that takes place far from the lights of Harlem, in the heat of the South, where former slaves took opportunity by the horns and carved out a niche of success on their Texas land.

A GEM FULL OF DELIGHTFUL AND USEFUL HINTS FOR THE TRAVELER
Ms. Hyman has provided the traveller a beautiful book full of wonderful restaurants and descriptions useful while visiting in Britain and Ireland. My wife and I had Ms. Hyman's book at our side while travelling to Ireland last year and to Britain this year. Not only does she provide local recipes and the names of delightful restaurants but she includes comments about the local area which these travelers found extremely useful. We stayed a week in the Cottswalds this year and our travels and dining were based on the recommendations of Ms. Hyman. We then spent a week in London and followed suit there. She led us to wonderful experiences we would not otherwise have found!

Continues to be an excellent source.
This book was in its fifth edition in 1980 (my copy), and obviously has been reprinted since then. There are more recent treatments of the subject, no doubt, and a lot of scholarship has taken place in medieval thought since that time. Nevertheless, I recommend that you buy this book (find a used copy if you can) because it is still one of the best places to get so many primary sources between the covers of one book. The introductory essays are very well done, but the value of this tome (761 pages) is the selection and depth of primary texts. This in no mere medieval cafeteria--the texts here are all selected for their importance to the overall content of each thinker's work. The selections are generous, too. With this book, you get Augustine, Boethius, Erigena, Anselm (with Gaunilo), Abelard, John of Salisbury, al-Farabi, Avicenna, al-Gazali, Averroes, Sa'adia, Solomon Ibn Gabirol, Maimonides, Bonaventure, Grosseteste, Bacon, Siger of Brabant, Aquinas (Spiriual Creatures, Summa Part I, II [first part], and the text of the 1277 condemnation), Scotus, William od Ockham, Nicholas of Autrecourt, Marsilius of Padua, and John Buridan (on Aristotle). Good stuff.

If you are concerned that there is no way you could get good information on so many writers in one book, let me assure you that you can. For example, you are not going to read all of Aquinas, but you ought to be familiar with the first part of the Summa. Similarly, you are not going to read all of Augustine, but some of the best of his work is here (good sections from The Teacher, Retractions, Confessions, City of God, The Trinity, and On Free Will). The important additions of Islamic and Jewish philosophy (Christian medieval thought depends upon the Aristotelian work of Muslim thinkers to a great extent) to this work make it a very nice one to have.

Great book for sixth graders!
Ellen doesn't know what happened. Last year, in fifth grade, Ellen was very popular. Now in sixth grade, all the girls who were her "friends" have now turned even more popular and now Ellen has no friends. The popular girls are very mean to Ellen. They call her names, exclude her, and basicly ignore her. Does Ellen get revenge, or, even better, get any friends? Read this great book to find out!!!

Renoir's Etchings & Lithographs: Catalogue Raisonne

The Definitive Catalogue of Renoir's Graphic Works
Quite simply, this volume represents the definitive source of information about Renoir's lithographs and etchings, supplaunting the nearly-impossible-to-find Stella Catalogue Raisonne. Even a casual perusal of such venues as "ebay" is sufficient evidence that serious collectors must rely upon both skepticism and education. This volume is a steadfast companion in seeking genuine Renoir masterworks, an absolute necessity for the graphics collector or gallery.
