The Axioms of Religion

A must-read classic for Baptists and other Evangelicals
I bought this book because it was one of 12 volumes in a series. I've found it to be not only the best of the series, but one of the best books I've ever read. Dr. Mullins interprets the Christian faith via the belief that every soul is competant to relate to God without mediation through other humans or human institutions. From this conviction he draws six truths (axioms) of the faith. The axioms deal with one's relationship with God, other Christians, and society. The language is written on a common level (for 1908), but is rich and carefully expressed. In addition to the 12 chapters of the title there is an excellant selection of additional short writings by Dr. Mullins. This book has helped me to gain a new perspective of my beliefs and has strengthened my faith. My only complaint is that it lacks chapters 13-17, which I found in an original 1908 copy.
Brewster's Millions (The Library of Indiana Classics)
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (1999)
Amazon base price: $27.95
Average review score:
Better than the movie
The 1985 movie was great, but Brewster's methods are far more diverse and humorous in the book. Notable highlights:
-Brewster befriends a pair of muggers by insisting they steal everything, even the $300 they overlooked in his right pocket.
-He hosts a luxury cruise for 50 to Europe, and the guests stage a mutiny to curb Brewster's inexplicable generosity.
-An Arab sheik tries to steal Brewster's fiance in Egypt, but is shot in the head while absconding.
A possible detractor: the book has far more dramatic content than the movie. This is not simply a comedic vehicle. It is thoroughly absorbing, nevertheless.

unexpected surprise
This book surprised me. It was nothing like what I expected it to be. It was a good book and I enjoyed reading it wich was not something i expected to be able to say. The stories were interesting and intreaging. Goerge Sand is nothing less then a literary genuis, her stories reminded me of when I was younger. In her Story "What Flowers Say" I could definitly identify with the young girl since when I was that age I too wondered what the flowers talked about when I wasn't there. I would recomend this book to people of all ages it is simply a great book, writen by a truly awesome writer.

Knowledge is power -- and money
That is the theme of this terrific book which points out that sales of top-end items (jewelry, cars, real estate, etc.) are ultimately INTERPERSONAL transactions -- and that the seller must be able to "read" the personality of the prospective buyer in order to close the sale. The author uses the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as the basis for her personality profiling; but the book is most valuable to any salesperson, even if you're an MBTI rookie.

The Germans in Chile: immigration and colonization, 1849-1914
Published in Unknown Binding by Center for Migration Studies New York ()
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:
Finally non-opinionated book written about Germans in Chile
For anyone who like me wants to trace their German roots in Chile, this book provides wonderful information from a very reliable source--a former U.S. embassador to Chile.
Ussually there tends to be a misconception that every German from South America had some secret and "evil" link to the Nazis, but George F.W. Young does an incredible job in separating the German people who came before the turn of the century and those who came with the purpose of expanding Hitler's war markets.
The book is so matter-of-fact that it provides a pleasant and soothing feeling to any well-intended American in the pursuit of inter-american friendship and honor.
