Unique African-American Prayer Journal
Lloyd Preston Terrell and Karen Williams have drawn on the prayers and the prayer concerns of the African-American community to create a book that guides our prayers, offers us Scripture, quotations from African-Americans, photographs, and space to write our own prayers, prayer concerns, and answers to our prayers.

The book is based on monthly themes: January-Prayers for the Soul, February-Prayers for the Church, March-Prayers for the Nation, September-Prayers for the Educational System. (The prayer concern for March 3--as I compose this--is for Law- and policy-makers, a concern for all of us.)

The late Dr. Samuel D. Proctor wrote an introduction to this book, and it is good to have his wisdom.

The book opens flat for easy writing. Good to put on a table and not worry that your page is lost.

This is an excellent book! I hope that many people will use its suggestions and be guided to a deeper prayer life.

Wow! This book is FUN. Great photos. History comes alive.
We picked up this book onboard the SS Independence in Hawaii. Hey, Wow! This book is FUN. It makes history so alive and relevant. Both my husband and I related to aspects of this story. The photographs of Grace Kelly are charming and romantic, while the politics of the period involved in getting the ships built are eye-opening. What an incredible feat of engineering to construct something of this size! The Henry Dreyfuss personal anecdotes hightlight the designer's process. There are many touching, personal stories from people who rode the boat or worked on it. Great period photos. Down to earth writing. Makes me wonder about the photographs that were not selected for this book! Thanks to the authors! A book I keep coming back to and enjoying over and over.

Understanding Persecution from a Unique Vantage Point
This is a fantastic book for ages 6 to 9, about Tituba, the slave from the West Indies whose harmless but very sincere and sacred pagan beliefs and practices sparked the Salem Witch Trials. Besides telling a little known story of black slave history, it is particularly refreshing to read about the persecution of nature worshipping people, and how easy it can be to be accused of witchcraft for having an animistic religion. By seeing Tituba on nearly every page, in contemplation and at work, I completely identified with her. For once, this telling doesn't concentrate on the hysterics of the young girls. My daughter couldn't put it down, and the illustrations deftly remind one of Tituba's connection to West Indian culture, while being set in puritan New England. It really is a must-have for those interested in women's and witch heritage.

Transatlantic Liners, 1945-1980

A nostalgic trip through a bygone era!
Although the age of the transatlantic ocean liner is long gone, it can be satisfyingly revisited through the pages of this book. "Transatlantic Liners, 1945-1980" is about the heyday of the 20th century ocean liner. Loaded with interesting photos and informative text, this book brings the reader back to a period when ocean travel strove to be as elegant as it was functional. The book evokes the contrast between today's cruise ships - which function to entertain - and the passenger liners of yesterday, whose primary function was to transport people (and limited amounts of cargo) from one side of the ocean to the other as quickly, comfortably and safely as possible. The reader is introduced to the concept of the cruise ship as an evolution of the transatlantic liner. The book illustrates the transformation of passenger shipping from a necessary form of ocean transport to a preferred form of leisure and entertainment. This book is recommended reading for all ocean liner enthusiasts and maritime lovers in general. It's a great "coffee table" book!

The Ways We Touch: Poems
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Trd) (August, 1997)
Author: Miller Williams

The true poetry of the common man...
When I heard Miller Williams read his poetry earlier this year, he started out his reading in a simple way, "Now, I'm going to tell you about people you know..." And this sums up Williams poetry perfectly. The Inaugral Poet's work is simple on the outset, so simple in fact that you might miss what's going on underneath. Because part of the magic of William's poetry is the underpinnings, the things he doesn't tell us, the things that are there anyway. And, as icing on the cake, we get to see a Master poet working, with an intense control of voice and diction, a careful attention of form. This is a work you won't forget very easily.

Extremely Helpful!
This book is an excellent guide to building your vocabulary. The fact that it departmentalizes words into common topic areas is extremely helpful. This is great primarily because it allows readers to better understand the context of the words being learned. Many of the words presented may be familiar to the average person, however, I feel that this helps to make the learning process alot smoother in that it doesn't pressure the reader into feeling he or she should learn so much at one time.

Opening up the Insane Stranger
This book of poems released all sorts of demons. Digging from the deepest repressed anxieties to the slightest touches of tranquility. Miller William's "Why God Permits Evil" is one of the most intriguing books I've ever read. the structure of his work is impeckable and no slander can be written of his work. A true masterpiece of the art of words. Brilliace is the only way to describe this book. I think the reason I love the book so much is because the words seem to draw so much life out of, and into the reader. I am not sorry to say that I have nothing bad to write of this book. It has brought me to new heights of security, and countless measures of serenity. If you want a book with true quality every time you turn a page, this is the book of choice. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts on this masterpiece, "Why God Permits Evil."

Like thrilling missionary stories? Read about the inspiring and incredibly hard life of William Carey, Baptist "father of modern missions." If today's foriegn field gospel workers feel challenged and stressed out, they should pick up this one and read about Carey's nightmare experiences establishing a Christian foothold in India. The story of Carey marital problems is gruelling but his perseverance is inspiring.

Incredible. You won't be the same after reading it.

Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns
When I was first learning about SM, I was full of the usual stereotypes and misinformation about it. IMHO, to understand and appreciate SM, it is essential for one to realize that SM turns everything on its head. 'Nothing is what it seems', so to speak. Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns does that better than any other book I've read on the subject, and it does so with abundant love. After reading a few pages of Molly Devon and Philip Miller's book, my unfounded fears about what SM was began to melt away. The book is written with so much love and playfulness that one cannot help but see and feel it. And once the fear from all those inaccurate myths is dispelled, there is room for the *delicious* fears with which safe, sane, and consensual SM abounds. And the loving playfulness is contagious! For these reasons (in addition to those discussed by other reviewers), I highly recommend this book, *especially* for all novices. It is my very favorite! Read, learn, and enjoy.....yummmmm!!

Everything that you need to know to get started
If you are new to the scene and want to become familiar with the majority of the techniques that you may wish to try then this book is an excellent guide. To begin, it walks through the terminology, the basic mental and emotional elements in SM play, an overview of "scene" and how S&M relationships can be negotiated. Once the book has prepared you with the basic elements of how to enjoy S&M play, it moves into actual techniques: a safety overview, waxing, bondage, flogging, spanking and humiliation. It finishes with a discussion of how to build, transport and hide your dungeon "toys".

Even if you are an experienced scene player, it is unlikely that you are conversant with every possible type of play, so this book serves as a helpful reminder of the basic techniques. While it does not cover the more extreme types of play - water sports, blood sports or mummification, it is comprehensive in it's coverage of the most standard types of play.

Although this book is written by a hetero male dominant and a female submissive, the words of wisdom contained are applicable to everyone. I personally found that having both partner's perspective was very helpful when trying to construct my own session.

If you are looking to get into S&M, this book is a great start to begin play at home. Miss's Abernathy's Concise Guide to Slave Training is an excellent next step. And once you are feeling confident in your private relationship, SM 101 by Jay Wiseman will give you enough credibility to feel comfortable in visiting "public" scene events.

Practical, wonderfully insightful and a kick to read
"Screw the Roses..." is the answer to a thousand curiosities the uninitiated might have about the psychology of the world of SM and of its citizens. In addition to the thorough exposition on the mindset of SM people, it offers buckets of practical tips and advice for all, from beginner to experienced player/participant. The humor begins with the title and the disclaimer just inside, and extends all the way to the end, making "Screw the Roses..." probably the most amusing book available on psycho-sexuality. It is written from the authors' perspective of male dominant/female submissive, and though the rationale for doing so is presented respectfully and tastefully, it occasionally takes a bit of mental effort to apply an appropriate transposition. The pages on the basic psychology alone make this a worthy purchase; the coverage of so many other topics (tips & techniques, furnishing your dungeon/playroom, etc.) make this a book not to be missed if you have even the lightest interest in SM.
