Famous Ocean Liners Photo Postcards
I recently got this treasure from a friend, and all I could think was that this is the most awesome little liner postcard book I have ever seen. I have almost every Titanic book out, including various memorabilia, but I did not have any postcards until I got this book. I would definitely recommend this to any SERIOUS Titanic fan. Many clear, high-quality images in this collection.

Excellent examination of religous liberty in American life.
In this measured and fluently written essay, the author reviews the origin of the linked doctrines of religous liberty and church-state separation in American life by focusing on the contribution of three architects of these doctrines; Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Roger Williams. Miller is very successful in presenting these men without the anachronistic accretions of 19th and early 20th century historians and stresses the novel and indeed revolutionary character of religous liberty and church-state separation. He then follows with a nice analysis of how these doctrines shaped subsequent religous life in America. The doctrines of religous liberty and church-state separation appear as a benign influence on American religous practice, enabling the religious experimentation and enthusiasm that characterized much of the 19th century. Miller also provides a pithy and insightful characterization of the development of American Protestantism and a good history of 20th century legal battles over church-state separation. Miller's book, with its moderate tone and judicious examination of original sources, serves as a nice corrective to ideologues of the left and right on the subject of church-state separation. In Miller's analysis, the Founding Fathers did not frame the USA as a Christian (or even religous) polity nor did they expect the rigid prohibitions demanded by some of the more extreme contemporary proponents of church-state separation. Miller repeatedly calls for restraint and wisdom in addressing these difficult issues and his book exemplifies these qualities.

Fishbait: The Memoirs of the Congressional Doorkeeper

Engaging and Informative
William "Fishbait" Miller is one of those obscure figures who were lucky enough (or unlucky enough) to observe more of America's recent political history than the majority of us could ever hope to know. We could spend an entire lifetime learning what Miller observed firsthand. For several decades, he served as the doorkeeper for the U.S. House of Represenatives. During that time, he met and got to know some of the most prominent figures of recent American history -- Sam Rayburn, Adam Clayton Powell, Gerald Ford, Bella Abzug, Richard Nixon, and many others while remaining unknown to the general public.

When Miller finally left his position in the mid-70s, he produced this engaging memoir, a good-humored look at the men and the institution that he had previously devoted his life too. Though slight on any in-depth analysis, the book is a treasure trove of anecdotes that reveal the human side of our often impersonal Congress. If you want to know about Congressman Marion Zioncheck's notorious drinking escapades of the 1930s or which Congressman was the most sensually-minded this is the book to read. This is the book is you want to know what a Sam Rayburn or a Lyndon Johnson was really like before they became just more distinguished names in stuffy history books. As well, Miller's details of the 1950 attack on Congress by Puerto Rican terrorists (a terrifying moment that, now forgotten, carries some renewed weight following the recent terrorist atrocities in New York and Washington) is both harrowing and moving.

Though a proud Democrat, Miller's book is nicely nonpartisan, treating Republicans with the same affection as Miller's comrades. In fact, the only completely negative, unsympathetic portrait in the book is reserved for a Democrat, the notorious Rep. Wayne Hays who was known as the "meanest man in the House." Miller, who lost his job as a result of Hays, takes a sly delight in showing us why that reputation was deserved.

This is an enjoyable, engaging memoir that should be required reading to anyone interested in the human side of American political history.

Overall, pretty good.
This is a great reference book. The pictures are excelent. Great overview of the uniforms, accoutrements, weapons, and such of the different armies throughout the war. I especially liked the individual Regiment pages with illustrations showing what a soldier might have looked like in a given regiment.

Miller did pretty good, but he loses a star here for his biased writing. In the book, Confederate General Braxton Bragg is touted as a man who, owning a Bible, probably didn't read it, given the shape of his troops, while Sherman's atrocities are overlooked, and he is praised as a man whose "place among American commanders remains secure," and Miller speaks with surprise that he is controversial, since it's been "over a century and a quarter" since he burned and pillaged the South. Anyways, this is a great resource for reenactors and anyone interested in militaria of the War Between the States.

This is a super book for purpose for which it was written
I have not read the latest version of the book; however, I read the original authored by Miller. I found the recorded examples used to illustrate the ideas in the book especially useful. The original book contained a list of twenty-five basic compositions which illustrated the ideas.

Stonewall's Pathfinder
Stonewall Jackson's successful career can, in part, be directly attributed to his gifted topographer, Jedediah Hotchkiss; a man with a gifted eye for terrain. Whether as mapmaker, pathfinder, courier or staff officer, Hotchkiss continuously complimented his talented commander. To understand Jackson, one should know Hotchkiss; Miller's volume, particularly when taken in conjunction with Hotchkiss' own MAKE ME A MAP OF THE VALLEY, certainly facilitates understanding of Jackson's campaigns. Miller clearly delineates Hotchkiss' many skills in an easily read text supported by beautiful full-color renditions of some of Jed's maps, meanwhile teaching the reader a great deal about military topography, map-making and the Civil War in the East. Any student of Jackson, the Valley Campaign, or Civil War staff operations should have this book. A well-done, lovely book about one of the war's most interesting characters.

Italian Liners & Passenger Ships
This new book just published by William H. Miller by Dover Publishing in 1999 is a good source of information on the Italian Line, established on January 2, 1932, by Italian Premier Benito Mussolini. It focuses on the history of the line from the earliest ships of the line, to the Rex, Conte di Savoi, Andrea Doria, Chistoforo Columbo, the Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and the Raffaelo.
