MY FAVE LINER BOOK
This is my all time favourite liner book. Hundreds of ships plyed the Atlantic after WWII, and almost half of them are listed with their stats, facts, history, and their pictures, making each ship easily recognizable. The book is well written, and is a must for any liner lover. This is the book that got me started on ocean liners.

Miller, Bukowski & Their Enemies: Essays on Contemporary Culture
Published in Paperback by Avisson Pr Inc (November, 1996)
Authors: William Joyce and Joyce William
Amazon base price: $12.00
Average review score:

Solid, passionate criticism
I bought this book to read the author's thoughts on Bukowski and Miller and was quite impressed with the passion and clarity of his criticism. The best thing about it for me, however, was an introduction into the works of B. Traven, a writer I had never heard of before this book. Traven, the author of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and many other novels, is a forgotten treasure in our literature.

I highly recommend this slender volume to anyone interested in discussions of contemporary American literature. Be warned, though: This is not dry, academic discourse. William Joyce, for all of his erudition, is a bloody, passionate thinker and a living man. In other words, he's the perfect sort of fellow to write criticism of Bukowski, Miller and B. Traven.

Another Great
This boom is a must for any cruise ship lover. See the beginnings of the cruise ship era with ships like the Canberra and QE2, before seeing the modern RCCLs. Miller does another great job with this one with not only the pictures, and stats, but also the facts.

A new classic
If change were easy, a lot of us (psychologists, counselors, health care providers) would be out of work. Still, that doesn't stop us from complaining about those clients and patients who just won't do what we think is in their best interest. Motivational Interviewing, a "client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation," was developed specifically to help faciliate change in "resistant" populations and has been embraced by addictions treatment and general health care professionals alike. The entirely re-written, highly readable, second edition of MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING updates readers on the state of the art and science of MI, and provides a practical guide for helping people to make all kinds of behavior changes.

The book opens with a brief review of the converging lines of inquiry that supported the development of MI and an overview of core concepts such as readiness to change, ambivalence, and an interpersonally-based understanding of motivation. The second section is a guide to practice. Although "spirit" is emphasized over technique, this section is filled with practical advice on how to increase motivation for change while minimizing resistance. A new chapter on ethics addresses the concerns that arise when attempting to motivate clients to do something they aren't sure they want to do. Consistent with the method's client-centered approach, the third section constitutes a chapter on learner-centered training in MI. The fourth section - comprising about half the volume - includes diverse contributed chapters on applications of MI. These include a discussion of MI and the Stages of Change model with which it is often associated; an excellent review of efficacy research in MI; adaptations of MI such as brief advice and MI with couples or groups; and applications with specific populations and settings. The application chapters necessarily vary in format but share in common careful consideration of the rationale for MI in the particular setting and the available evidence for success along with offering clinical wisdom from the field.

The first edition of Motivational Interviewing has become a modern classic in the field, and the second edition is a worthy successor. Whereas the first edition presented MI as an alternative to traditional approaches to treating addictions, the second edition presents MI as an approach to helping people get "unstuck" regardless of the kind of behavior change in question. The key principles are more fully thought out, yet streamlined and presented in an almost conversational tone. The humanistic values that underlie MI are more consistently evident, yet the dedication to empirical validation of clinical insights remains. There is enough new material to justify buying this book even if you already have the first edition.

Pennsylvania History Presented in Fine Fashion
A much needed history book concerning Pennsylvania has finally been published, and that book is "Pennsylvania", edited by Randall Miller and William Pencak. This is one of the best state history books ever, as it is comprehensive, readable, and vastly informative. Its chapters are well written and skillfully documented by notable experts on each chapter's time periods and subjects.
To highlight portions of the book does injustice to the multitude of other subjects. Still, among aspects this book discusses include how William Penn's treaty with Native Americans symbolized a new spirit of cooperation in American, and how his son's breaking of that treaty perhaps introduced another national spirit.
We see how how industrial owners persuaded Pennsylvania government to make unprecedented infrastructure developments in railroads, roads, banks, and canals that both made Pennsylvania an industrial leader and the owners quite wealthy.
The book tells us of the first Paleo-Indians who probably came to Pennsylvania 14,000 years ago. Their lifestyles influence through today, as many present highways follow the same routes Indians used for centuries prior.
19th century Philadelphia's business leaders are described as being more centered on their own businesses than on the state of their community than leaders in other cities. This led to New York and Baltimore surpassing Philadelphia economically.
At the turn of the 20th century, child labor was an important factor of Pennsylvanian family income, often representing one third to one half of what a family earned. One sixth of households increased their incomes by renting to boarders.
Pennsylvania has a temperature and climate that resembles that of Europe. This book combines history with many fields of interest. For readers who wish to gain a wealth of knowledge about Pennsylvania, this is the book to own.

An excellent basic reference.
If 1/3 of a page and one photo for each ship is enough info for you, this is an outstanding quick reference. I only wish the author had included a few significant ships of under 15,000 tons, and with the recent spate of very large new cruise ships, the book is slightly dated. A cross-reference list of sister ships might also have been welcome. No matter; this is still one of the most heavily-used books on my shelf.

Once again, a splendid job done by William Miller
Once again, William Miller has put together an excellent volume regarding the history of ocean liners, this time those of the CGT. This latest release contains extraordinary b&w photographs and text thoroughly covering the history of every magor CGT liner and most secondary ships from the Washington to the France (1961). Each article includes the specifications of each ship, construction locations, and major birth dates. Where available the current status of each ship is also included.

This book makes excellent reading material, and is perfect for referencing. The photographs included, unlike those in many "typical" compilations, are rather rare- I don't believe I saw any of them until I read this work. In future, I hope Mr. Miller will continue writing these types of books, for their value to the ocean liner wnthusiast far exceeds that of the paper on which they are printed. What's next? Only he knows. (But I would like to see "Picture History of Norddeutscher Lloyd" or "Picture History of HAPAG" soon)

Proactive Selling: Control the Process-Win the Sale

Fresh look at sales process useful to all experience levels
This book provides a fresh and different insight into the buying and selling process. I was able to use the tools that Skip Miller outlines in his book immediately and was not only successful at closing deals that were "on the fence" but also penetrated existing accounts at a higher executive level.

I gained a new perspective on the value of communicating clearly with my clients by speaking their language and staying focused on working together to provide a solution to their problem. The Summarize, Bridge, and Pull concept helped me to maintain control, communicate my understanding of the client's needs, validate my value proposition, and realize increased sales very quickly. I learned new methods of asking the right questions, acknowledging and eliminating my clients' fears and concerns, and transferring the ownership to them.

I would highly recommend this book to all sales professionals especially those with experience and success. This book is about results and providing the necessary skills to compete in an ever changing and highly competitive world.

now in VB.NET - and for version 1
I reviewed the orginal version of this book which was in C#. I've been lucky enought ot get my hands on the new VB.NET edition and it is even better than the original. I am more used to VB as it is, and I spent quite a lot of time translating some of the code snippets in the original, but now I don't have to! The book has changed a bit, it looks better than the first edition, and it is now completely 1.0 compliant. I've used the first book a lot, it's told me more or less everything I've needed to know. If you need to know about web services and you prefer VB then this is the only book you'll need!

This is a must read!!
James E. Brockington, Jr., MA (Community/Clinical Psychology) Director of Mental Health Services in an institutional Therapeutic Community setting for incarcerated substance abusers.

Psychology from Scripture: Bridging the Gap is that one resource that you must have in your back pocket! Dr. Williams' integration and incorporation of spirituality into the methods of intervention and critical thoughts are laudable and exacting. His efforts to create a "reader-friendly and reader-sensitive" publication have been most successful. I would sincerely hope that Psychology from Scripture: Bridging the Gap becomes a permanent volume on every concerned and committed individual's bookshelf. This is a must have publication and a lifestyle enhancement vehicle. Do read it!!!
