A "must read" for marijuana's medical value
Author David R Ford brilliantly confirms marijuana's medical value. A "must read" for every politician.(and anyone who wants to know the truth!)

Marijuana has proven medical value, as published March 17,1999 by the Institute of Medicine, a division of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. Why then is it still prohibited medicine by the federal government? Author, and former CBS television journalist from Hawaii, David R. Ford reports the facts in his easy to read book. Ford explains how the federal government created a systematic campaign of deception that began in the 1930's. U.S. legislators were duped into outlawing this relatively harnless plant--along with hemp, it's versatile NONINTOXICATING cousin. The author paints a clear picture, with credible references, that marijuana is intentionally kept as a Schedule One drug, with heroin,(too dangerous to prescribe, and with no medical value!) At the same time, Marinol, the synthetic pot capsule is easily available, but can cost up to $1,000 a month. Other than the federal government, the war on marijuana is funded by the alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical companies. Marijuana is their competition. An herb cannot be patented. The book includes dozen's of patient's stories,(including the author's, who is a cancer survivor.) Marijuana: Not Guilty as Charged, also includes about every myth regarding pot for the past 60 years. This book is a MUST READ, written by a man who has spent over 50 years studying this subject.

Marijuana Not Guilty As Charged
After reading "Marijuana Not Guilty As Charged" I have decided to become active in this marijuana movement. This book made me realize that marijuana is a medicine. I wonder how long our federal government is going to be wrong(about medical marijuana) to try to prove that they are right. This book addresses their own DEA administrative judge Francis Young and his support of marijuana. David R. Ford also talks about the "steppingstone theory" and addresses the fact that marijuana was once legal in this country and what happened among many other issues. This book has changed a part of my life. I now know that I cannot sit back and let everyone else do the work in the marijuana movement I have to join the fight. Like David R. Ford, I too can do courageous things to help. This book is a must read. In the book David Ford dedicates a chapter to NORML(National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws) and ten things that you can do to relegalize marijuana.
David R. Ford is so sure of the benefits of marijuana he offers a $50,000 reward to anyone who can scientifically prove marijuana is not medicine. I think this book is a must for the "non-users" of marijuana as well as the users to gain some insight into this misinformed subject. Read this book it's possible that it could help you make the quality of life better for someone you might know or for yourself.

Someday the Truth Will Triumph
I am a disabled person who was overjoyed to read David Ford's wonderful exposè. My progressive condition should be causing unbearable pain and spasms at this point...and DOES without this great medicine. Someday the truth will triumph because of people such as Mr. Ford and books as bold as his. Someday this book will be a collector's item, like the Soviet flag, because of works like this. I have heard Mr. Ford on talk radio, as well. With his survivor's courage and enlightened convictions-having won his battle with cancer with a big help from marijuana-David Ford provides a wealth of knowledge and insight into the absolutely ridiculous and ineffective War On Drugs. This WOD, this total misuse of our money, is being promoted by alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical companies. Dirty politics? You bet! Marijuana is a superior product plain and simple, and more doctors would publicly agree if they could do so without negative consequences. After reading "Marijuana: Not Guilty As Charged," I would not be surprised if the future reveals some sort of conspiracy involving advocates for the gun industry and the DEA's War On Drugs...perhaps gun lobbyists pressing officials to pass WOD budgets to fuel more crime to increase the demand for firearms. In any event, the War On Drugs has achieved this: in every American city, illegal drugs are more readily available today than ever before. And not many consider the by-products of the WOD's destruction, the constant displacement of farmers in developing countries among them. CLEARLY, the War On Drugs has become an out-of-control habit supported by taxpayers coerced by ill-conceived laws. Mr. Ford's book has an easy style and light approach, but makes one think deeply...and hope for a sequel.

An awesome book to encourage and challenge parents...
For parents who are looking for the key to their child's heart.... welcome to an excellent answer!

Monte shares truths and personal insights that has come with 25 years of on-the-job experience in parenting. He has captured the essence of a parents' highest calling in his title: "romancing" your children's hearts. He compares romancing a child's heart to a classic Fairy Tale: a tale of the king's daughter who has been captured by the evil villain... who wasn't prepared for the prince coming to rescue her! :-)

Speaking of stories, there are plenty of them in this book... stories that range from Monte's first water-skiing episode that almost ends in disaster, to the time when Monte and his wife, Karey, are driving across Western America with 3 small children.

The stories were highly enjoyable, but the point of the book is to become very aware, as parents, of the person God is forming your own child/ren to be, and how to best help that child become that awesome person!

I appreciated and took to heart many of the philosophical truths Monte has sprinkled throughout the book. Every chapter is well blended, which makes for enjoyable, yet thought-provoking reading.

I would recommend this book to any parent who desires to have a closer relationship with their child/ren. You will always be glad you found "Romancing Your Child's Heart". Are you ready to become the prince? - then go out and buy the book!

5 STARS ARE NOT ENOUGH.......IT IS A 10 STAR BOOK!
Parents across the world need to have a copy of this book. Monte not only delivers what might be considered the best parenting book out there, he also delivers a sure recipe for parents to reach the heart of their children. In a time in our society where it is even more important that we stick together as a country, we need to strengthen the bonds of our family as well.

As a new dad I was not only moved by what Monte had to say, I was moved to change the way in which I was raising my children. It breaks my heart to know that there are parents out there that would raise their children in any other way.

If you don't get a chance to read this book you will be doing a disservice to society, yourself, and most of all your children. So my advice to you is stop working late at the expense of your family and invest in your true retirement. Put down your remote control and let your attention be spent on what will truly entertain your life. If you take a little time out of your schedule to read this book, I guarantee you will never regret it.

This book is a must read for anyone with children.
Romancing Your Child's Heart is a unique and informative book about parenting. Monte shows ways to love children (and others)that I have never read about before. The stories about his children are very insightful and meaningful. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those with kids and I hope all of my children will read it.

Angel by my Side
This book is not "just" about a dog. This book is not just about a "typical" dog or an "exceptional" dog. This book is about
life. It is a book about what most all of us want in life:
acceptance, joy, play, nurturing, happiness and last but not least: unconditional love. "The Angel by My Side" shows how we don't really "own" a dog; but how a dog (here a Golden Retriever) can teach us about the really important things in life and help us get away from our own selves, our own problems, and how we can give to others, in a multitude of ways. And yes, we as humans, can still learn from dogs.

A great story that anyone with a dog should read
After loosing my golden that I had had since age 7, for as long as I could remember, a friend bought me this book. It was truly excellent and brought this 6' 8" man to tears on a constant basis. His descriptions of a guardian angel in the form of a dog could not be more accurate. I have bought numerous copies of the books since to give to friends and fellow dog owners.

The Angel By My Side
Thank you to Mike Lingenfelter for sharing his exceptional story, I absolutely loved this book. Not only is this book inspiring to all who will read it. "The Angel By My Side" will open your heart to what service dogs do for their human "partners", the difficulties and obstacles that each has had to overcome and the truly remarkable work that both Mike and Dakota have done and continue to do. In our "throw-away" society, perhaps this story will also teach people about rescue dogs and what wonderful companions they are (I have a rescue dog of my own). Beware...you will need a box of Kleenex when you read this book.

Answer to My Prayers
Reading had become a nightmare for my son and our entire family. We have tried everything from Hooked on Phonics to special tutors to university clinics. Nothing worked!!!! Every day was a trial for all of us. My son was convinced that he was retarded! A friend told me about this program. I almost didn't buy it because it seemed to easy. At that point I was willing to do anything, so I read the book and followed the detailed instructions. IT WORKED!!!!!!! My son advanced 4 grade levels in 5 months!!!!! Since then he has advanced another level and is a totally different person. He comes home from school and hugs and kisses me, then he always wants to read something out loud to me. I can't say thanks enough. We have contacted Dr. Furr (who was a big help along the way) and we are going to go meet him and say thanks.

Amazing
This book is truly amazing! I only half believed it would work, because nothing has ever helped my son before. This not only worked but it was very easy to do. My son is in the sixth grade. He was reading on a first grade level two months ago, today he is reading at the fourth grade level and we have only just begun. Thank you Dr. Furr, you have really saved my son's life!

Thank You!!!!!!
I don't know what else to say other than thank you. My son suffered a brain injury when he was 3 years old. I have been told by many professionals that he would never learn to read. I had given up when another parent told me about this book. I sent an e-mail to the author and he said, "Baloney,he'll read using this method." And he did. And he did quickly. I am still in awe. I am also angry that so many people told me to give up, that he would never learn. Thank you and I want to be the first to order the multiplication program that Dr. Furr invented. Thank you for changing my son's life (and my life).

I keep going back to this book
If you use Photoshop, but you don't use high-level techniques, you owe it to yourself to get this book. This is not one of those books on how to do crazy effects, rather it's a tool for serious users to get the most from Photoshop's tools. This book takes you through each of the different features of Photoshop -- sharpening, color correction, making selections -- and teaches you things you thought you already knew.

P.S. Years after writing this review, and attending Photoshop workshops, I can attest that the information in this book holds up. The advice on topics such as color correction, making selections, sharpening, etc are still on-the-money and totally applicable to Photoshop 7, so if you can get this book at a big discount it may well be worthwhile.

It's all you need
I'll keep it short and sweet. I believe if you want to really understand PhotoShop for what it is, then just buy this and you are set. Blatner & Fraser are brilliant, when it comes to teaching and explaining Photoshop. I can only think of 2 books that every Photoshop user should have, this one and (forgive me Dave & Bruce) Ben Wilmores book.

This book is a godsend, can't wait for version 6.0

Great Reference Text
Real World Photoshop 5 is the one Photoshop book in my collection that I refer to the most. This is a book for those who want to learn or better understand the theory behind such things as color correction, color essentials and image essentials. The author's discussion of color settings is direct and written in clear, concise language. The chapter on color settings is required reading for making proper use of Photoshop's color capabilities. Real World Photoshop 5 covers basic color and tonal correction in depth. This book deserves a place on every serious Photoshop user's bookshelf. Weather a new or experienced user, Real World Photoshop 5 is a reference text you will refer to over and over again.

can't look away
apart from the magnificent photographs and compelling text, this book is powerful because it forces a reader to think about the shameful issue of america's prisons. at a time when most citizens would rather look at the latest celebrity du jour on the cover of every magazine, a work of art that presents real people -- most often old, a no-no in this society -- in grim situations should be applauded. "prisoners of age" peers into the abyss with courage and the result is the antithesis of fantasyland.

engaging
Prisoners of Age is visually and intellectually stimulating. I was fortunate enough to see the actual exhibition in San Fran. Having the book to peruse through at my leisure is a bonus and brings back the vividness of the photographs on display in Alcatraz while in addition providing some very interesting reading. I recommend it for personal or a gift purchase.

Prisoners of Age, the Alcatraz Exhibition
RIVETING!! Not only does this book graphically depict the often horrible treatment of America's aging prison population, but also serves as a sample of how Americans view the elderly in general. Our fast-paced, high-tech society places too much value on youthful vitality and pure intellect, not realizing the contribution that wisdom and decades of experience can bring to heighten our humanity and sensitivity for our fellow man. Even if you choose to ignore the deeper meaning of this book, the quality and impact of the photographs and artwork still make it a bargain for the price.

Walk Through Darkness
Published in Digital by Doubleday Publishing ()
Author: David Anthony Durham
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

How did I love this book? Let me count the ways....
As he did with his first book, Gabriel's Story, Durham has provided readers with a book that works on many levels. First of all it's a hell of a story. This is an exciting adventure, an intelligent page-turner. Interesting, well-drawn characters, who, like people in "real life," can act in unpredicted ways. These characters rank with those created by Charles Frazier in "Cold Mountain."
If you've ever grappled with imagining the lives of slaves in 19th century America, their struggles and the response of whites to them, reading "Walk Through Darkness" will help.
The story concerns a slave, William, escaping a cruel master and his search for his pregnant lover. Durham intersperses this tale with relentless pursuit of the protaganist by a tracker.
While spinning this fascinating yarn, Durham offers a hard look at a time and place not so distant and the attitudes that pervaded American life.
This is Durham's second book, following the fantastic "Gabriel's Story". He is two for two, having hit both out of the ballpark.

A needed read
Walk Through Darkness is a powerful tale of the trials and tribulations of slavery in early American history and how the forces of love, truth and redemption can at times work to right the wrongs of that hateful period.

In his novel, David Anthony Durham tells a story of William, a fugitive slave, who places his life in danger to find his pregnant wife and deliver her to freedom. With little knowledge of his surroundings and only occasional help from random strangers, William travels from down South to Philadelphia. During his travels, William encounters many hardships, which force him to grow into a stronger man. First, he is tricked, then captured, by a group of slave traders and prepared for sale. Forced to endure the cramped quarters and debasing actions of his captors, he begins to lose hope of his goal, only to be freed through a violent uprising, which results in the death of his captors. On the run again, William reaches Baltimore and stows away upon a trading ship, only to be found and once again returned to shackles. It is here, while befriended by the ship's Captain, that William begins to learn the larger lessons of life. With one more chance to reach his goal, he is given the opportunity to escape, and through a stroke of luck, finally ends up in Philadelphia. Hungry, tired and lost, William succumbs to yellow fever and would have died had it not been for the help of a stranger. This Samaritan only asks that he understand her altruistic ways and her desire to help him become a free man. Fully recovered, he discovers his wife's whereabouts and makes plans to rescue her from her surroundings.

Throughout William's journey, we follow a parallel story of a Scottish tracker, Andrew Morrison, who is hired to find, capture, and bring William back to his master in one piece. While his motives are unclear at first, it becomes obvious that Morrison's past history within America has created a man who is at odds with his identity and is wrestling with his quest for redemption. With his trusted hound at his side, Morrison eventually ends up in Philadelphia to find and capture the fugitive slave.

The book ends with a suspenseful account of the various forces that are working for and against William in his quest for freedom. With violence an everyday possibility, many lives are ruined because of their participation in helping an innocent person seek his dream. However, even with powerful currents working against him, William ends up on his way to freedom through the help of many of those who were opposed to the evil of slavery that flowed through American veins.

Walking Through Darkness is a heavy read that yields an enormous amount of satisfaction. It is clear that David Anthony Durham has become a literary force to reckon with and is among the new cadre of African American writers like Paul Beatty, Guy Johnson, and Colson Whitehead, who have brought new stories into the mainstream literary world, without sacrificing their integrity. Once again, Durham has used his deft literary brush to create a tale complete with vivid pictures of life and death during this most turbulent time in American history.

And from the darkness shall come light
Not every book has the ability to affect the reader as deeply as Walk Through Darkness affected me. David Anthony Durham, author of the critically acclaimed Gabriel's Story, has written a haunting novel about William, a fugitive slave. One may surmise that the force behind William's escape is freedom. Freedom is, of course, part of the reason William flees his harsh laborious conditions. But even moreso is his desire to find Dover, his wife, who is pregnant with his child and has moved North to freedom with her mistress. The story alternates between William's point of view and Morrison's, a Scottish slave tracker. Somehow these three people, who are separated by miles and life experience, are connected.

Durham's writing is refined, articulate, and descriptive. He makes you feel the fear, terror, relief, pain, joy, and a plethora of other emotions felt by the protagonists. The characters are in no way shallow, instead powerfully constructed with a certain profundity. The author uses a historical setting and breathes new life into it, providing the reader with a raw, fresh story in lands never traversed. Transcending race, time, and status, this Walk Through Darkness will make anyone see the light...

Wealth Protection : Build and Preserve Your Financial Fortress
Published in Digital by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ()
Authors: Christopher R. Jarvis and David B. Mandell
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Nice Outline But VERY LIGHT On Detail!!!!
This book will be good if you want to review the components that might make up your wealth protection strategy. However, the book comes up short on the detail needed to understand those components well or to structure a comprehensive plan for yourself.

To get a feel for the lack of detail take a look at the Table of Contents, note that it seems very comprehensive but when you look a little closer you will see that most of the chapters are LESS THAN 5 PAGES! The subtopics in each chapter usually make up a single paragraph with a large font bold heading that takes up a lot of the page.

In short, if you want to get an overview of the components you might ask your advisor to explain to you, this would be a valuable purchase. If you want to understand these things yourself, you will be disappointed.

Great advice, for just about everybody
I just finished reading Wealth Protection and found it to be extremely valuable in planning for my financial future. I am a business consultant and consider myself to fairly aware of the various financial tools, strategies, and techniques...

However, the book offered me numerous new strategies for more effectively protecting my wealth. The best thing about the book is that it is structured in a way that will allow just about anybody to find specific, tailored advice.

Good work Jarvis and Mandell! I look forward to your next book!

key reading for safeguarding your money
i am privy to working with Chris personally and I can assure you he is one of the most respected, capable and knowledgeable persons in the area of wealth protection. the book's true magic lies in the fact that it is intended for anyone interested in protecting their assets, and it shows you how to do it in a very down to earth, easy to understand manner.

this is not designed for the technically advanced financiers out there, so don't fret. it is literally for anyone who wants to protect their wealth.
a highly recommended book.

Strategy research from the world's top business school
Both editors are marketing professors at The Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), which is the world's leading business school (BusinessWeek and Financial Times). George Day is well-known for his market-driven strategy, while David Reibstein is one of the leading scholars in the field of competitive marketing strategy. The book is split in 4 parts, each consisting of 3-to-5 stand-alone chapters.

Part I - Understanding Advantages in a Changing Competitive Environment - discusses competitive arenas, competitor analysis, and competitive advantage. The first two chapters expand largely on Michael Porter's (Harvard Business School) frameworks, whereby the other two chapters introduce approaches to include policy and technology trends into the strategic planning process.

The aim of Part II - Anticipating Competitors' Actions - is to get inside the heads of competitors. Chapters 5 and 6 explain the possible use of the game theory within competitive strate!gy and strategic decision making. Chapter 7 builds on these chapters to integrate the economic frame (chapter 5), the behavioral frame (chapter 6), with an coevolution frame. The final chapters of this part introduce frameworks and approaches to understanding competitor response and competitive relationships.

Part III - Formulating Dynamic Competitive Strategies - builds on the first two parts and introduces approaches to designing strategies. It introduces reactive strategies, preemptive strategies, signaling opportunities and uses, competitive positioning, and antitrust constraints (which is increasingly important to companies).

In Part IV - Choosing Among Alternative Competitive Strategies - the three chapters introduce methods and frameworks for choosing the right strategy. Chapter 15, in which conjoint analysis is combined with scenario analysis, is perhaps the most complicated chapter of the book. Part IV also introduces the possibilities to use simulation !tests for analyzing and testing strategies.

Although this book is named "Wharton on Dynamic Competitive Strategy", there are various chapters from other academic institutions. Each chapter is an excellent piece of work and can be read on a stand-alone basis. For beginners in the strategic field I recommend chapters 1 and 2 highly. The book is written in business US-English.

A well-chosen set of essays
A well-chosen set of essays is compiled, based on a 4-level framework: i)Analyze the competitive environment, ii)Anticipate competitor's actions & reactions, iii) Formulate Dynamic Strategies, iv) Choose among alternative strategies. The book provides a great way to update one's strategy knowledge.
But I find 'Mastering Strategy: The Complete MBA Companion in Strategy' by Financial Times Editors to be a better book with greater depth and broader spectrum.

Essential strategy handbook
This book is amazingly well written and goes from the basics of strategy to more complex subjects such as game theory. But the best of it is not the wide variety of strategy subjects or the amount of real world examples it uses but the integration between chapters. One can easily read this book at once or skip to chapters that are more interesting to him/her.

I consider this book essential for MBA students, management consultants and managers in general. Excellent choice!

White Wolf
Published in Paperback by Bantam Press, Ltd. (2003)
Author: David Gemmell
Amazon base price: $27.95

Average review score:

The Ties that Bind
Of all of Gemmell's extraordinary world's none have been quite as captivating as the Drenai saga. The protagonists in these books allow us glimpses of the history making events that occur in this epic, themselves usually being a catalyst of some sort, but after reading nearly a dozen of the novels, I had only theories about how these glimpses and tatters truly fit together. From everyone's favorite anti-hero Dakyras to the epitome of a hero that is Druss we had but a fog with a few clear spots.

After reading White Wolf it was as if I had fog lights. The fog is still there but I can see my way through the history I have constructed and can see glimpses of what lies ahead. Gemmell brings us both new and familiar in this novel with druss recounting some of his history and skilgannon reliving his. At the same time David teases you with a girl carrying the Prince of Assassins crossbow and body parts of slain hero's being preserved which proved enough to make me salivate about the possibilities.
While perhaps not individually as awe in-spiring as Legend and Hero in the Shadows, it is a masterful piece that lends cohesion to this world that I so love. If that is not enough for you... our troubled protagonist fights with two katanas... how cool is that.

Another Exciting Gemmell Novel
David Gemmell's new novel 'White Wolf' is a great read. Although marketed as a Druss novel, Druss is a secondary character in this morality play. Skilgannon is the real star of this novel; a deadly young warrior with a twisted past. As in all of the David Gemmell novels, Skilgannon is a damaged and in many ways morally corrupt individual reminiscent of the early Clint Eastwood, 'Man with No Name' characters.

As is all of Gemmell's work, the writing is sharp and the dialogue clean and clear. Gemmell's real gift however, lies in his utterly human, 3-dimensional characters. Interestingly, the author explains (via his characters dialogue) how a warrior must think in black and white terms; wrong and a right; good and evil. Gemmell's characters are none of those things. They are all wonderfully filled with shades of gray, just like all of us.

'White Wolf' and all of it's new characters are a wonderful addition to the continuing Drenai saga. I for one would like to see more of Skilgannon. Although complete in and of itself, this novel begs to be followed with more stories of Skilgannon.

Heroic Fantasy ( THE BEST )
Every time I read a David Gemmell novel I really become an extra character , he is that good . I have read avidly every offering and still eagerly anticipate Gemmells' next . His heroes are flawed , if old craggy Druss is new to you its' time to be acquainted , his return in White Wolf is wonderful . Read this , there is no better .
