Great to use when buying a car
This book is an excellent source to bring with you to battle against pushy used car salesmen. When they won't give you a price, and ask you how much you think you'd spend for it, this book will tell you exactly how much you should. Also, with an itemized list of accessories and their values, you can quickly tabulate the overall value for the car. Most importantly, at the end of the book there is a mileage adjustment chart so you can add or subtract from the value of the car based on the mileage. An invaluable resource.

Effective Risk Management: Some Keys to Success
Published in Paperback by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (2003)
Author: Edmund H. Conrow
Amazon base price: $79.95
Average review score:

Practical insteal of theoretical
This book is for risk management professionals, or those who work with risk management (project managers, IT security and business continuity professionals and engineers) who want or need to master advanced risk management techniques based on real world issues and factors. Although the book is focused on risk management from a DoD contracting perspective, the material is applicable to commercial organizations as well. The author provides an appendix that compare DoD contracting and commercial environments to ensure that this book has a wide appeal (A Comparison of Risk Management for Commercial and Defense Programs). Obviously if you work in the DoD contracting industry this book is going to be more applicable.

The book begins with an introduction that discusses risk management, why it's needed and what it is. I felt that this material was too basic for an advanced book, but the subsequent chapters quickly got to the heart of the subject by providing the details for an implementation life cycle of an effective risk management process that consists of:
(1) Implementation
(2) Planning
(3) Identification
(4) Analysis
(5) Managing risks
(6) Monitoring

What makes this book valuable for real world practitioners are the pragmatic advice for developing a risk management process that is based on the lessons learned by the author and best practices. In fact, there are over 250 such lessons learned. These alone make the book worthwhile for even the most experienced practitioner because there are sure to be many that you may not have considered. In addition to the best practices, the author provides pitfalls common to risk management and how to avoid them.

Another aspect of this book that adds value is the use of readily available tools, such as Microsoft Excel, and popular simulation software (CrystalBall) to reinforce the techniques that are described in the book. Overall this is one of the best books on risk management that I own because it goes into deep detail and coves advanced topics. It also is practical instead of theoretical, which sets it apart from most risk management books.

Electromagnetic Pulse Propagation in Causal Dielectrics (Springer Series on Wave Phenomena, No 16)
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (1997)
Authors: Kurt Edmund Oughstun and G. C. Sherman
Amazon base price: $118.00
Average review score:

Important; many more people should read it
The phenomena covered by this monograph have a long history, going back to 1914 papers by Sommerfeld and Brillouin, but the topic is still not completely understood; Sommerfeld's and Brillouin's work contained errors that have since been corrected, but the topic is quite difficult in terms of mathematics, physics, and experimental apparatus and instrumentation, so much progress remains to be made.

However, much progress has already been made, and much of it by the authors of this monograph. I was unaware of it until very recently, and I found it startling and important reading. It has significant practical implications for various fields, but I gather that many people besides me have been completely unaware of the progress made since 1970; I have recent papers on nuclear effects, radar, and high-powered microwave weapons sitting in my office whose authors were obviously unaware of how much progress Oughstun and others have made, and these papers would have been noticeably improved if they had included consideration of what is now known about pulse propagation in causal dielectrics.

So I urge engineers, physicists and others dealing with issues involving steep rise times of electromagnetic pulses to read this book, and consider how it may affect their work and their conclusions.

Prof. Oughstun has been continuing his research on this topic since his book was published in 1994; his more recent papers are listed in his CV on the Web. I hope he will soon issue a revised edition of this monograph, incorporating his more recent results and those of others; that would be a considerable service to the community. I also hope that Oughstun, or somebody, will produce an equally up-to-date monograph about what is now known on the question of how the pulse propagation phenomena described by Oughstun can alter the properties of the causal dielectrics through which the propagation occurs.

I will conclude by saying that because I have been involved off and on since the late 1960s in work that's affected by the material Oughstun covers in this book, I am both mildly surprised and somewhat embarrassed that I, and apparently many others, have been so unaware of it.

Read the book!

A "Prequel" of Epic Proportions
First there was the engaging saga of "Bacillus Subtilis and Other Gram-Positive Bacteria" that hit the bookshelves and captivated readers worldwide. Now, this TWO VOLUME epic shows us where it all began. It reveals the origins and transformation of an innocent coliform, Ecoli, who just wanted to gain sustenance from its gutter lifestyle and be left alone. I personally found it sorrowful how it became ripped from its sewer home and was probed, analyzed, and mutated into the monster of research literature that it became. It becomes obvious that it was BECAUSE of the dominance of Ecoli, and its more virulent cousin, Styphi, that Bacillus became the rebel hero of bacteria that would wrench the eyes and hearts of scientists away from the Gram-Negative Empire and would bring balance to bacteriology. Particularly intriguing were the chapters related to segregation. While this grand novel is NOT for children, it remains an educational tour-de-force that should be read again - many times over.

Everest: The Best Writing & Pictures From 70 Years of Human
If you are an Everest fan (and I don't just mean a 1996 disaster groupie) this is a must have/ read! Even though it ends in the late 1980s, the information, photographs and insights are the best! Incredible climbers, many of whom are no longer with us, take you on their efforts on the mountain. After reading this book, I was better acquainted with the mountain and its topography than any other book that I have read (and I have read alot of them) and am acquainted with where current expeditions are in their search of the summit. If I was a library crook, the book would be mine. Instead, good karma and conscience ruling!, I have placed an order to find this out of print book with Amazon, drooling with anticipation until I can finally put this gem in my Everest library as the penultimate acquisition. Kind of like summiting and getting back to base camp!:)

One of Husserl's Greatest Works
Anybody who wants to know more or less in detail about Husserl's phenomenology is invited to look at this book which is a great exposition of his doctrine. In it, we also can find one of the most important doctrines in his system: the doctrine of states of affairs as reference of assertive sentences, and the reference basis as being the situation of affairs. According to the correspondence between the assertive sentence to the states of affairs and situation of affairs that the truth can be determined.
