A friend recommended this Bible to me. I usually use a NIV Bible and wasn't sure about this translation, but it is wonderful. It is not like the Living Bible where everything is written in more modern terms. It is similar to the NIV only easier to understand.

The Bible is divided so that you read six days and have the seventh day to reflect and/or catch up. Each day's reading begins with a devotion, a synopsis of the reading, things to think about concerning the reading, and suggestions as to how to apply the lessons learned to your everyday life. It is not simply a devotional. It is the complete Bible with thought provoking commentary and simple explanations that anyone can understand. I highly recommend it to anyone...even those who do not desire to read the Bible in a year. It is a great Bible for everyday study and use at church.

I made the commitment 5 years ago to read the Bible through it's entirety every year for the rest of my life. I started with the Living Bible, and when the New Living translation came out in 1997 I purchased it in the Daily Walk version. I am almost finished now, for the 3rd time. The Lord said that He would bring His word back to our rememberance, but before I started reading this translation, I couldn't even get it in, so that He could bring it back to me. The wording of The King James version was much to complicated for me to read fluently. This Bible has been such a blessing to me, I take my yellow highlighter each day when I read, and mark the things that speak out to me. When I talk to others about the importance of being in The Word, and they don't have the NLV, I buy The Daily Walk NLT for them. Why? Because I know that they can read it and understand it, without having to stumble over the words. There is no better way to make God's Word a part of your own life, and no better way of encouraging someone else to make it a part of their life. I believe this Bible and a yellow highlighter should be beside every person's bed. What a wonderful way to be blessed.

My mom told me about this Bible so I purchased it. I've been telling everyone that I know to get it. I've only had it for a week, but it has inspired me to want to read the Bible daily. This Bible is written so that everyone can read & understand it. I can see this being a very important tool to help me become a mature Christian. When I was in elementary school I read this book countless times. I still remember it vividly to this day. It is definitely a must-read for children!

I read this book when I was in elementary school. I am now 25 years old, and I still remember this book. Over the years, I have found myself thinking of this book now and then and wishing I had a copy of it in my possession.

This book was a special friend of mine. It was there for me on rainy days, sunny days and very sad days. I can recall once being very sad about something, and remembering that I had checked the book out from the school library (I often did), and I lay down on my bead and curled up with this book. I can remember my sadness vanishing instantly as I was pulled into the spooky, yet delightful magical world of Grandpa's Ghost Stories. The tears that first fell on the pages of the book were certainly the last ones of the day for me.

Because of this book, I have always LOVED rain storms and thunder and lightening storms, they actually make me feel cozy.

No other books in the world have ever had this kind of effect on me, with the possible exception of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark trilogy.

It is very tragic that this book is no longer in print, and I anxiously await the day that it is available again at a reasonable price.

I highly recommend this book to absolutely anyone, but especially to anyone who enjoys a good, spooky tale. This is a treasure. Do yourself a BIG favor and discover it for yourself and for your children.

I believe I speak for everyone on this list, when I say this book is one of the best, if not the best children's books of all time. For me, and many others (at least on this review board) this book was a life changing experience. I find my experience with the book is quite similar to most of the others on this page. I found the book in my elementary school library, and loved it. I checked it out every time I could get the chance, and read it over and over. I highly recommend this book, for all ages. The stories are wonderful, the illustrations are fantastic... A true classic!

Many people think that the NLT version is "bad" because it is not the Bible. It is, just not the NKJ version. I have always had a hard time understanding The Word, and this version was wonderful for me.

I got it just yesterday, and haven't read much of it, but I love the format and all the notes. I wold have given it 5 stars, but since I have had it for only a very short time, I don't know if I won't like it as much later.

I have read, and also used the devotions in The New Believer's Bible. People are dissing that one, too! I think for new believers, children, and teens, the NLT is an easy-to-read bible. If I tried reading the KJV as a new believer, child, or teen I'd freak out. The thee's, thou's, thy's, etc., and the other words that are beginning to be less used, and even less "understandable", would make it hard for me to concentrate on God's love letter to me. I would be too focused on trying to understand the language! Even the NIV is sometimes too hard for me to understand!

This is a wonderful version for all those teens out there who want to read the Bible, but can't find the time. If you have a good Bible and are thirsty enough for God's Word, all of a sudden, there will be time! There was time all along, you know, you just didn't WANT to!

This is the best Bible format and language I've ever read. It gives a clear interpretation of what the Bible says about important issues surrounding teens today, such as abortion, homosexuality, creation, etc. It also highlights key verses and gives profiles of important biblical figures. The wordage is easy to read and understand, and tells the reader what the Bible is saying in modern English. It is a great study and reading Bible for any teen, and I give it two thumbs up!

When I was a young Christian my youth pastor gave this bible to me. This is such a great bible for young people for so many reasons, too many to name really.

This New Living Translation of the bible is complete with index helps as well as numerous other resources. Maps are clear and easy to read. There are life application notes and well as highlighted memory verses that really stress the important scriptures. The persdonality profiles of major biblical figures is great to those who may not have a clear understanding of why what a person did was so important.

Probably the best aspect of this bible is that it makes reading some parts of the Old Testament, which can be more difficult, interesting and enjoyable to read. The parts of Leviticus and Numbers have charts and other helps to give the reader the little bit of added help it sometimes takes to get through those books.

An excellent portion of the book is the "Life Changer Index" where it gives guides to where certain scriptures talk about issues that directly relate to young people today in our Western culture (AIDS, homosexuality, abortion, gossip, cults, honesty, prayer, etc).

I have bibles in every translation that they come in, and yet this remains my favorite one to read. It is as user friendly as a bible can get. I've hung onto this book from my days as a young Christian to my days as a pastor and beyond. I highly recommend this book to all young people. Even if you are not younger in age, but are a new Christian, this version of the bible would really be a great help to you. It doesn't really matter that it's titled "student" bible, it touches on issues that we all deal with anyway. This not limited to students, by any means.

I really loved this book! It's an amazing tribute to Jackie, and the pictures are incredible. I've never seen most of them, and so many of the ones with JFK and John Jr and Caroline are so touching. Most picture books have a smattering of photos, but this one seems to cover just about every month of Jackie's life! It's really something to see her as a lovely little girl, maturing into a young woman, and then going through all that she did. The captions are very interesting too, and well-written. If you remember Jackie fondly like I do, you will want to get this book!

I was captivated by this book. James Spada has compiled several well-known photographs with many photos I had never seen. He does not try to analyse or to delve into the behind the scenes. He presents the photos with a paragraph or two, and lets us glimpse into Jackie Kennedy Onassis's life. I was entranced by the pictures of her youth and the pure beauty and joy in several ungarded moments. A beautiful tribute.

In addition to containing many never-before-published photos of one of the most famous women of our times, this book has some very interesting biographical information (extended captions) about Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Anyone interested in Jackie and her remarkable life will love this book.

I enjoyed this book and found it well worth the read. I especially enjoyed learning how the theory of human evolution in itself has evolved. I can recall reading books as a kid on this topic which showed the state of human evolution in the 1960s. Much has changed.

The DNA and fossil record point to multiple branches in our "family tree". This has lead to the the author speculating on the existence of multiple human species at various times.

The book seems to focus on the homo hablis and homo erectus part of the family tree. The cement is the Neandertal. If I got it correct, Neandertal's evolved out of homo erectus. But later, another species evolved and slowly replaced the Neandertal's.

Despite being a well writen story about the current state of human evolution, the story of the Neandertal is both interesting and tragic. It ends with them disappearing about 28K years ago, attempting to emulate our direct ancestors.

The DNA sections of this book are interesting and well written. Additionally, the interactions and ego collisions of leading scientists in the field is an interesting side bar. Our knowledge of human evolution hinges on their hard work and skeptical nature.

I started this book with no interest in human origins whatsoever, and finished it with a keen interest in the field. This is due to the skill with which Shreeve presents the vast and confusing field of paleoanthropology.

What sets this book apart from others in the field is that Shreeve focuses on modern-day humans--the scientists involved in these debates--and lets us discover the ancient world through their eyes. It's easier to relate to the confusion, jealousy and occasional triumphs felt by these scientists than to a bunch of dusty, silent skeletons. The book doubles as both a great overview of paleoanthropology as well as a primer on how scientists really act. These are not cold, detached people in white coats--they really care about what they're doing, and really take it personally.

This is the best science writing I've read in many years.

I really enjoyed this book. I am a meteorologist with an interest in evolution in general. The sections on DNA and how to trace our roots was fascinating. The book is written from a story telling perspective as the author attempted to put together a picture of how "we" evolved. The author showed how different scientific disciplines have converged on some key concepts about our evolution. What better way to improve and build upon a theory. Like all science, it pays to be skeptical at times. The author presented the case for our evolution from several perspectives. The center piece was the Neanderthal man, how like us, share a common ancestor in homo erectus, as I understood the book. As a kid I read about human evolution and was surprised how the theories of what species are in our lineage have changed. The fact that different species of "homo" co-existed is fascinating. The fact that our early ancestors co-existed for thousands of years was also interesting. I found it tragic to see how the Neanderthal's attempted to emulate us before flickering out of existence about 28K years ago. The DNA evidence suggesting an out of Africa evolution was probably a key underlying theme to the book.

"Hell Rising" is another rousing, non-stop adventure and like most of the other books in this series, there are surprises aplenty. We learn what happened to Sister Fand and the Imperium Brittania after the events of "Savage Sun" and find out more about Kane's alleged "past life" as the Celtic Conan, Cuchulain.

This book mixes military sci-fi with such esoteric material as Atlantis (or an outpost) and the evil breeding experiments that went on there in prehistory. As always, the action is fast and colorful, the characterization sharp, the dialogue witty and there's even time for some romance.

The main surprise is how effortlessly Axler (in reality, Mark Ellis) pulls all of it together to make a thoroughly entertaining story. Outlanders is such a unique series I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't discovered it yet. In my opinion, it's head and shoulders over any other action/adventure series on the market today, including its sister series, Deathlands.

Don't miss this one!

The latest in this magnificent series is yet another great and fun read as Kane and his small group run afoul of a new but ancient enemy from the past. I always love this Celtic/past lives stuff that this remarkable storyteller mixes in so well with this post-holocaust series. This book was by far some of the grittiest-as-yet, down-and-dirty action scenes that I can remember. Man, that Kane can take some serious punishment - and give it back two-fold! I love the character Fand and how she was portrayed in this book was really exciting to read. She is sexy as well as a good fighter to boot. Such colorful characters and places mixed with tons of high action adventure scenes make this book one of the very best I have read. Mark Ellis is surely at the top of his game and full in his writers prime. Keep up the great work, you are definately giving DEATHLANDS a run for its money. You will love this new chapter for new or old reader fans - a must read!

HELL RISING is an epic adventure, another classic entry in a series which has already had quite a few. It has just about anything anyone would want--a larger than life villain, fast action, interesting locales, a world threatening menace and of course--sex.

But it also has poignant moments, good character development and interaction and a new take on Kane's "past life" sub-plot which has appeared occasionally.

The main draw of this book and the entire series are the characters. They're intelligent, funny, desperate and courageous and the reader will follow them anywhere. HELL RISING is highly recommended.

"The Thurber Carnival" was a beloved companion of my early youth; I laughed out loud again and again at the stories of "My Life and Hard Times," the hilarious "Fables for Our Time," "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," and other classics. What was really important to me about Thurber was that he came from the same part of Ohio that I did, and actually had had relatives and attended family reunions in Sugar Grove, Ohio, where I grew up. That meant all the world to me, because it showed me that someone who had ties to Sugar Grove could be a famous writer. Now, I love Thurber's work more than ever; as an adult, I can better appreciate the nuances of a story like "The Catbird Seat." Thurber's work is a precise, funny, yet deeply serious portrait of an America which had just recently completed the transition from a frontier to an urban society. Women, having just won the right to vote, were flexing new-found muscles; men, divorced from the need to wrest a living from the soil, felt suddenly unmoored and emasculated; a new breed of self-help authors arose to make a quick buck from the newly uncertain populace; and oceans of alcohol fueled the newly stirred resentments between the sexes.Thurber recorded it all, in a prose style as elegant and lucid as any in the history of American literature. "The Catbird Seat," "Fables for Our Time" and the self-help parodies of "Let Your Mind Alone!" are every bit as fresh and pertinent as when Thurber wrote them 60-odd years ago. Unfortunately, some aspects of his work--most glaringly his portrayal of African-Americans--have not stood up so well. But one can only say of Thurber what the Duc de Saint-Simon said of Louis XIV: "His virtues were his own, his faults were his times'." The best of James Thurber ranks with the best of Mark Twain, Ring Lardner, Woody Allen and any other American humorist you can name.

James Thurber is undoubtably one of America's greatest writers ever. "The Thurber Carnival" is an brilliant collection of his works.

I was introduced to Thurber's works two years ago,by a short story of his that was included in my English textbook. I was instantly charmed by his writing. Ever since, I have read everything of Thurber's that I can get my hands on. Through my readings, I have discovered several key things:

1. James Thurber was NOT just a humorist/satirist. Of course, I have stayed up late reading his stories laughing out loud, yet there is more to the stories. Thurber not only chronicled people of his time, but people of all times. His works show that the little eccentricities most people possess are the very things that make them interesting. Take this excerpt from the story "Recollections of the Gas Buggy", included in "The Thurber Carnival":

'Years ago, an aunt of my father's came to visit us one winter in Columbus, Ohio. She enjoyed the hallucination, among others, that she was able to drive a car. I was riding with her one December day when I discovered, to my horror, that she thought the red and green lights on the traffic signals had been put up by the municipality as a gay and expansive manifestation of the Yuletide spirit. Although we finally reached home safely, I never completely recovered from the adventure, and could not be induced, after that day, to ride in a car on holidays.'

2. That excerpt brings me to my next discovery: James Thurber had quite a way with words, which to my knowledge, no author since has been able to near. Thurber's words transport you to another world, an amazing world, where everyone even slightly insane is portrayed with kindly satire. The character Briggs Beall, from the story "The Night the Bed Fell," is a perfect example of Thurber's wit.

3. An additional point I discovered is that Thurber's works need to be shared. I treasure this book so much that I brought it with me as traveled to Nebraska to visit my friend, just so I could read parts of it aloud to her. Whether it is a driving adventure with a Russian boat specialist("A Ride With Olympy"), an amusing maid("What Do You Mean It Was Brillig?"), or the light bulb smashing Elliot Vereker("Something to Say"), Thurber's stories need to be shared.

For these reasons, as well as others, "The Thurber Carnival" is a most wonderful book. James Thurber's writing is nearly magical, as well as his characters. This is a great book to pick up again and again, if only to read one of its great stories.

I grew up with this book. First published in the mid-40s, it lived in the center of a built-in bookcase over my father's desk in the family room, and I was drawn to it time and time again during my childhood.

At first, I was convulsed by Thurber's uniquely hilarious cartoons. His dogs and his women are priceless...drawn in a style that nobody has ever been able to duplicate or capture.

It was only later, as I grew older, that I could appreciate Thurber's written humor. The "Thurber Carnival" (and it is) is a compilation of essays and excerpts from "My World--and Welcome to It," "The Middle Aged Man on the Flying Trapeze," and others. These were Thurber's earlier works that were very much a product of their times, but oh, so funny! Thurber was one of the great commentators on the vagaries of everyday life. Along with Robert Benchly et al., he set the tone for an entire generation. I still have this book, and I absolutely cherish it. It's hard to do Thurber justice in a review. All I can say is--buy this book and wallow in it. You'll be glad you did.

This particular anthology of the very best writings of James Allen is a testament to the truth of that cliché; "Good things come in small packages." The collection of five classic works by the contemplative Englishman, being only about 5 x 4 inches, is the ideal size for stuffing Christmas stockings, though it is entirely more substantial that the throwaway knickknacks and edibles that are usually found therein. It also rides unobtrusively in backpacks, briefcases and handbags, and will be equally inspiring and motivating to the carriers of all of the above. This is a book that cries out to be toted around; open it up to any page and you will unfailingly be greeted by a gem--in the form of Allen's digestible, clean, concise prose. It is no exaggeration to say that James Allen's was one of the great minds (and souls) of the nineteenth century. Opting not to utilize the convoluted and alienating language of some other great thinkers and philosophers, Allen-an exceedingly humble man who advocated simplicity in life-meant for his deeply valuable ruminations to be shared with everyone, no matter what age, sex or background. And it is true that his writings-on such themes as character, destiny, true wealth, spiritual development, the secret of happiness, serenity, suffering and the universal law of love-are as appropriate for the high-schooler as for the retiree, the ambitious business person or the thoughtful homebody. As well as one of simplicity, Allen believed in a life of self-discipline, self-examination, and a constant striving for personal betterment and harmony both within and among individuals. This involves, in largely simplified terms, refusing to judge ones fellows while at the same time reaching to better one's self-through the renunciation of personal, inharmonious will for surrender to the unfailingly loving and ever-present guidance of a higher power (or self). Lovers of the great author Leo Tolstoy's synthesis of the earthly and prosaic with the mystical and spiritual will appreciate a similar quality in Allen, who was an admirer of the former. Allen, perhaps even better than Tolstoy, demonstrates that there is no better place or time to become more spiritually beautiful, prosperous, loving, harmonious and happy than here on this earth and in this life. Peace, truth, prosperity, joy, wisdom and that vague, cloud-enshrouded 'Kingdom of Heaven' we have all heard of are not, Allen emphasizes in these works, conditions which await us after the completion of this strife-ridden earthly existence; on the contrary, they are qualities already present in abundance, here and now, not just around us but in us, waiting to be realized. We all need to be reminded now and then of the responsibility we have for our own happiness and destiny. James Allen-in this appropriately small, simple-looking yet densely rich book-illustrates how to effectively exercise this responsibility for the most fruitful results and rewards, both tangible and intangible.

Although I was familiar with As A Man Thinketh, I had not read other works by James Allen. This book has five of James Allen's works that all provide insight into living life as a positive, productive person.

We are all searching for answers on how to lead a fulfilled life. The answers are within all of us, but often we look elsewhere to try and find the answers through comparison and material possessions. I have by no means mastered the lessons taught by James Allen, but can see that with time, patience, and persistance I can be at peace with myself. This work is greatly enhanced with a goal setting plan. The combination allows us to create a plan and a framework to live by. The result is the ability to ultimately construct the fulfilled life we are all searching. This is not a read and put away book. One really has to think about the messages conveyed.

Thom fleshes out American history with real characters, and an inside look at one of early America's most influential families. Although some of the Revolutionary War and Indian War sequences drag on a bit long, it was well worth the trip as a launching pad for the famed Lewis & Clark exploration. In fact, I hated to leave them as they reached the Pacific, and would like to see how they faced those same challenges on the journey home. It paints a less than flattering picture of our nation's early history, while at the same time celebrating the bravery of those who made it happen. Readers who enjoy historical fiction will enjoy even more this piece of history that Thom embraces like a story.

Although I'm not much of a history buff, I read this book at the advice of a friend. By the end of the first chapter I was hooked. Thom brings the adventures of the Clark family to life. The book is accurate from a historical perspective and leaves the reader with a new appreciation of the courage and sacrifice behind our country's westward expansion. A must read.

This is the best novel of Revolutionary American history I have ever read. The story of the Clark family is incredible, especially that of two particular sons, George and William. Perhaps the main theme of this book is leadership. George Rogers Clark was a phenomenal leader. He almost single-handedly won the western frontier during the Revolution. In the end, he was ruined rather than rewarded, for his efforts. As his inner fire dies, it is momentarily rekindled by his young brother, who departs to co-lead the greatest adventure in American History. Thom's depiction of George's brutal marches on Kaskaskia and Vincennes, and the Journey of the Corps of Discovery, is a masterwork.

This book was recommended to me by a DEA agent. When I opened the cover, I stepped into another world, and when I emerged, I could no longer take seriously such presidential pronouncements to "Just Say No" or "read my lips." Later, I encountered a "friend" who had been in jail with one of the major individuals featured in the book. He told me that the convicted drug dealer had discussed the book and proclaimed that his part of the story had been reported accurately, except for the amount of money he'd been caught with. Evidently, DEA agents turned in $1M of drug money found in his trunk. He said there was at least $3M. Such corruption, I discovered upon reading the book, was more the rule rather than the exception. The book moved me to write my congressman, who admitted he had never even heard of the secret drug enforcement organization detailed in the book. And when Reagan and Ollie North were getting roasted about "guns for hostages," I laughed. If the American people knew about the drug deals our government oversaw (and I'm sure continues to oversee) to prop up "U.S. causes" in other countries, as well as our own, they also would have found the affair amusing. This book opened my eyes and blasted my naivete regarding our government's involvement in the dark underworld of illegal drugs. It will do the same for you. James Mills has written a remarkable book, and he had sense enough not to overwrite and allow this astounding story to speak for itself.

I found this book to be very informative. It opened my eyes as to why the US cannot seem to win this war. I liked the style that Mr. Mills used and really appreciate the amount of research he must have done. After reading this book I don't have any trouble understanding the "doublespeak" used by the politicians in this country. It brought to light that the American people are kept in the dark. What our government really does for us. My only hope is that enough people read this book, ask enough questions of the people who can and will do something to correct the wrongs brought to light.

Despite this books daunting 1000 pages plus, I could not put this well researched tome down. It covers DEA investigations of an Asian Triad/informant, an American pot smuggler, and a Mexican ganster/sadist. It blows the lid off the DEA's sad war on drugs and how nothing is ever really done and how one hand can never trust the other. Those who still believe in the value of the DEA are either naive and deluded or cognizant of how it profits American's in power both financially and by keeping the races of color emasculated by a system that is designed to enslave. His next book should be about illegal drugs and their link to the ghetto, money laundering, and the privatization of the American prison system. There has been a 5% growth each year for the last ten in the American prison population and now Mayor (sic) Giuliani wants close the methadone programs down in New York City. We should socialize medicine before we even consider a bonehead move like this. Shame on you.
