If you are interested in the general process of dying kimono, and wondered how they produced the beautiful designs this book is for you. Stencils were created to lay down repetitive designs on long strips of fabric. This book traces how this craft became an art form on its own. Gorgeous reproductions complete the understanding of how this tool became as collectible and worthy of study similar to wood block prints. An end chapter expands on how this product of the textile process affected Americans personally and artistically. A must have for any textile fan!

This book was truly the result of what happens when people take their blinders off and look at each other objectively. Having a shared Catholic/Evangelical authorship made the book very interesting indeed, especially for someone like myself who has deep personal ties in both of these camps.

The first part of this book discussed ECT, the Evangelicals and Catholics together pact, being careful to point out what it does NOT say, so that people don't get the idea that its false ecumenism. It does however go at lengths to explain the areas in which we do fully agree, and therefore can be said to have a common evangel.

The middle parts were interesting to me, as they explained sotierology from early and modern viewpoints. It didn't get too heavy, but it may not be of extreme interest to some readers. Next, church structure is discussed in a way that should help both Catholics and Evangelicals understand what each mean by "church" and the historical and Biblical reasons them.

Lastly was an essay by a man named David E. Bjork, an evangelical who tells of his experience evangelizing Catholics in France. What is so special about that? He encourages them to become better Catholics, rather than rip them away from a perfectly valid church, their roots, and their heritage! This was very heartening for me, as I've thought for some time now that this is how evangelism should be done in Central America and Western Europe. Further, his efforts seem to be having a good effect.

This is an encouraging book that I recommend all Catholics and Evangelicals read. For those endowed with open mind and a spirit of charity, there is much to be learned from the authors. I pray that all future cooperation and dialogue is as charitable as this.

As a catechist teacher I come across alot of text books. Thisis one of the better ones. Especially for those first and secondgraders just beginning to understand their faith and its traditions. Thank goodness our RE director chose this dictionary over others. The colorful pictures and clear explanations give valuable meaning to things that aren't always addressed during mass or other religious instruction. I highly recommend it.

Published for the first time, this manuscript contains the descriptive letters of a perceptive Pennsylvanian who served throughout the war. The unit saw action in the Second Manassas Campaign, at Antietam, at Gettysburg and in other major battles fought by the Army of the Potomac. In 1863, it served in the famous First Corps and fought on Oak Ridge on July 1. The regiment, which later was assigned to the Fifth Corps, was actively engaged in the 1864-65 campaigning. Since the 107th never had a unit history published, these letters provide the first in-depth look at the 107th Pennsylvania. Richard Sauers labeled this set of letters as "some of the very best Civil War missives that I have ever read."

This book is one of the first, serious attempts to look at the implication of climate change for weather-related natural disasters and, particularly, how society would, could, and should react to that.

Series of short stories written originally for The Nova Scotian in the early 1830s. The narrator while riding through Nova Scotia meets an itinerant clock seller - Samual Slick of Slickville, Connecticut. The stories concern the views and opinions of Slick about - well, almost anything. And, for the most part, they are funny. A great deal of the book is a satire or parody of the moralizing story popular at the time: although occasionally, the stories themselves do fall into the moralizing trap themselves. If nothing else, great history as told by a contemporary neighbour of a young United States. The period is equidistant between the revolutionary war and the civil war. In one story, Sam Slick expounds on the great freedoms of the American people: all men created equal. The narrator points out that it is the British Empire (and hence Nova Scotia) where slavery is abolished. Maybe, says the narrator, the American constitution meant all white people are created equal. The humour is often of this type where paradoxes and false syllogisms are revealed.

If you enjoy Aristotle and Aquinas and would like to gain a better understanding on Aristotle's work titled "Physics," then this is definitely a book you need to own. While there are literally hundreds of titles in print and out of print (but able to be found) on Aristotle's physics, there is no book that matches this one. This is yet another example of the "dumb ox" rising to the occasion again. Aquinas takes Aristotle's "Physics" lecture by lecture (i.e. passage by passage) and comments on what Aristotle is espousing. This is 638 pages of great detail, philosophy, and comments by one of the greatest philosophers in philosophical history (Aquinas), about one of the greatest philosopher's work. The work is translated by Blackwell, Spath, and Thirlkel, and has a forward written by one of the most renown Thomistic scholars of our day, namely, Ralph McInerny. The translators have done a wonderful job of taking a difficult topic and language and making it easy to read and simple to follow. Aquinas breaks down all of Aristotle's arguments, writings, comments, etc. into helpful and easy to understand comments. Furthermore, Aquinas takes words/phrases that are used by Aristotle and explains their context, intent, and meaning. Anybody who is familiar with Aquinas knows that Aquinas can say more in less than most if not all of the greatest philosophers. Therefore, if you want a commentary that will exhaustively explain Aristotle's "Physics" then look no further.

Sitting in your doctor's waiting room is usually not the most productive way to spend one's time. However, I had a good 45 minutes in my homeopath's office to peruse "The Complete Family Guide to Alternative Medicine," and found it to contain a wealth of answers to questions I had asked myself on numerous occasions. For example, I've felt that I could use some bodywork training -- this book's descriptions of Alexander, Feldenkrais, and all the others helped me see quickly that Alexander will best suit my needs. Homeopathic, aromatherapy, flower essences, all forms of meditation and psychotherapy, chiropractic -- virtually everything is there, with attractive photographs, beautiful layouts, and handy sidebars that clearly list the ailments for which any given alternative therapy could be expected to provide benefits. I was so impressed, I copied down the name of the book and came straight home to go online and see if Amazon had it. Highly recommended

I especially enjoyed Prof. Berry's pithy musings about railroads and breastmilk, a connection many of us have long pondered but have never dared utter.

First of all, I am surprised no one has bothered to review this book! I used it in a seminar on the American Civil War at the Japanese university where I teach English and history. It was excellent as an introduction to the subject matter it describes. The chapters were not dauntingly long and Thomas's gift for language presented an abundance of ideas and episodes with a striking economy of words. My students, who are not native speakers of English, were very satisfied with the book and had a sense of accomplishment once they got through it. A Japanese language version of Ken Burns's celebrated documentary on the Civil War was helpful in making much of the book understood; but even without that useful aid, Emory Thomas's book offered a gripping narrative of the Confederacy's short and turbulent history. Having read Confederate Nation my students have a firm and intelligent grasp of the single most tumultuous episode of the American experience.
