It does what it says on the tin
A no-nonsense, firm, but gentle warning note to those of us committed to the so-called path of self-development. Trungpa patiently brings into fresh air the dangerous and destructive method by which we typically approach the notion of spirituality: i.e. as something to be developed, learnt through discipline or otherwise achieved much as we seek to aquire the prizes in our everyday material life. Trungpa's message was ideally suited to that aspect of ourselves - the Eastern mind as much as the Western - which is constantly looking for something external through which we hope to secure our sense of self and make us happy. Exposing this tendency with great skill and clarity, he outlines a more open, direct and yet infinitely more challenging way to experience Mind beyond the self through correct meditation. Even amongst Buddhist literature this is wonderfully refreshing and at once destroys all hope of bettering oneself and yet points to a far brighter fact: that true liberation inevitably involves letting go of the self rather than working to improve it. The often rather painful process of spiritual awakening is made sense of in this book if we begin to see that our emotions and thoughts cloud our direct experience of reality. An apt message befitting an enlightened being who wore his suits 2 sizes too small as a constant reminder of the irritation and dissatisfaction of the samsaric world.

Cuts through the modern fake-spiritualism
Excellent discourse and scathing on modern day ooey-gooey chocolaty tranquiliser meditation(TM). Discover truly what TRUTH (Guru) is all about.

Like driving into a brick wall
Do you think you're becoming a better person?

Trungpa's book is a reality check for wide-eyed spiritualists, mystics and "believers" of all kinds. He makes a clever back door assualt on the ego and its overwhelming tendency to hijack the spiritual process. While I found some parts rather arcane, it's generally an economical text. I would especially recommend it to anyone with an interest in self-development who is exploring the spiritual path (is that what it's called?). Read it before committing yourself any further to may be just more BS. For me, this book brought years of self-gratifying meditation practice to a sudden halt. Rather like waking from a warm happy dream, and I have not looked back.

Absolute magic!
Miriam Cohen's stories bubble with the energy of children. They address the real stuff that's on kid's minds without being preachy or moralistic or stodgy. Eddy's Dream reminds me of the "Jim" series of books that are now classics and in every school library across the country. What's so amazing about this book is it's fresh approach: using Adam Cohen's intimate photographs insead of illustrations. Together, Miriam and Adam Cohen give us a vivid story of how kids interact and what they dream of.

It's a great story for parents to read and for kids to listen to (or read themselves). Best of all, my seven year old son picked it over and over as the book we'd read together at reading time.

You'll love it! And so will your child!

EDDY'S DREAM IS A DREAM BOOK
I just had the opportunity to see this book up close, and it's just amazing. I was so moved that these kids used their imaginations to transport a boy mired in sadness to a dream trip to his beloved grandma in Puerto Rico. I just loved Miriam Cohen's ability to lift the spirits of both children and the adults who read to and with them with this book.

Simply special!
It isn't often you get a book these days with black and white photographs. Somehow I think we think kids won't look at them, but what a mistake! This book is simply special. There's room in the text and pictures for the reader to find her/his own magic. And that's what it's all about isn't it. Can't imagine a kid not getting caught up. Thank you Miram and Adam Cohen!

Smirk while you surf
Andy Eddy's wild, wild web tour may be a few years old, but it's no less entertaining. It's still an excellent primer for those just starting to use the Internet for entertainment, and details a number of basic Internet tools (Telnet, etc) and how to use them--but more importantly, why you'd want to. From massive online role-playing games to Proctor & Gamble's unbelievable list of registered domain names (not just listerine.com, but also badbreath.com--and they get worse), it's helpful and humorous at the same time.

Oldskool book but still a fun/informative read
This book was written in late 1995 but its a fun and interesting read. Basically it explains the USENET and most of the topics in there (including some of the adult ones).

A GUIDE TO GAMES, ENTERTAINMENT, & JUST PLAIN WEIRDNESS
I know, I borrowed the above line from the cover of the book, but it is exactly that! INTERNET AFTER HOURS (2nd Ed.) Is a wonderful book, full of many interesting sites, including not only World Wide Web pages, but FTP, Newsgroups, and Telnet as well!! This book is full of wonderful information, and anyone who is looking for something to spice up his or her life on the internet should get this book.

Spectacular
This book is sumptuous. The artist's work is so spectacular that it is intimidating. However, she makes clear that she has had her share of false starts, which is comforting. I also appreciated her comments on her art, which turn out to be, in addition, comments on life. This is not a "how-to-do-reproduce-my-quilt" book, but there is a good deal of useful technical information. I have over 130 books on quilting and related topics and I think this is number one on my favorite parade.

Thread Magic: The Enchanted World of Ellen Anne Eddy
Best machine embroidery book in the market for making pictorial quilts. It is a beautiful and inspirational book as well a technical. The book discusses the array of emboridery threads, techniques on machine embroidery, covers fabric dyeing with procion dyes, and gives tips on how to minimize the distortions caused by heavy machine quilting.

Haven't received it yet.
I just ordered this book. The lady, who appeared on Simply Quilts, is positively charming. What a wit! Love her outlook on life and things swimming and hopping.

Clinical Decision Making: From Theory to Practice: A Collection of Essays From the Journal of the American Medical Association
Published in Paperback by Jones & Bartlett Pub (15 January, 1996)
Author: David M. Eddy
Amazon base price: $46.95
Used price: $34.96

A great simplification of a very complex problem.
This is as good if not better than being in a classroom with the author. The information is handled in a very logical and sequential manner. The examples clarify learning. I have purchased several copies for my friends.

a sophisticated conceptualization of the medical task
This compilation of essays previously published in JAMA is a brilliant sophisticated, clinically based intimate account of how modern medical knowledge, epidemiology and logic can be applied to the practice of medicine. It is clear and very readable. It has many insights, some of which are at first counterintuitive. It provides an unsurpassed answers to both the commercial "cost benefit analyses" of market managed care and the idiosyncratic academic/fee for service biases of traditional American medicine. A must read for any physician who wants a sophisticated approach to his/her vocation. Jeoffry B. Gordon, MD, MPH paradocs2@home.com

The Cocaine Wars
Finally, an accurate account of the drug situation that took place around Miami, Bahamas and originating in Columbia. Interesting to read of the stand the Bahamian government played in all the dealings. An excellent read!

One of the best books I've read
While reading the book you feel like you are there. Excellent book

Common Screening Tests
Published in Hardcover by American College of Physicians (May, 1991)
Authors: David M. Eddy and American College of Physicians
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $13.75
Average review score:

An Excellent Book
The healthcare industry has turned health screening into a big money-spinning industry for them. They rely on scaring the laymen into paying for all sorts of screening tests. This book would guide the honest physician into telling his patients what tests are necessary and what tests are unnecessary. This is an excellent book to be recommended to all honest physician who believes that the primary aim of medical care should be the welfare of the patient and not the income of the industry.

excellent reference for any primary care physician
As a busy internist, this text has helped me provide evidence based preventive care for my patients. It is a thorough review of the major, randomized clinical trials for common problems in Internal Medicine. Particularly helpful is the chart in the back of the book which lists the recommendations from the most prominent N. American Health Organizations eg. American College of Physicians, US preventive Servies Task Force, CDC, etc. I am eagerly awaiting the next publication of this book.

Doggie Doings : A Complete Reference for Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Teton Valley, Idaho
Published in Paperback by Two Mountain Press (07 May, 2000)
Author: Judy F. Eddy
Amazon base price: $10.00
Average review score:

Excellent Book for our trip to Jackson Hole w/our dogs
Imagine piling into the car with 4 kids, luggage and 3 dogs for your next vacation and not having any idea as to what you can do with the dogs once you get there. That was us last summer, heading off to Jackson Hole, and had it not been for this book which was refered to us by another friend, we would have never taken our dogs with us. It explains where good areas our to take your dogs, what to expect if you run into wildlife...bears etc. We never did, but we were prepared thanks to this book. The author did a wonderful job of reasearching all the valuable information in this book. Becuase of the information in this book, the whole family, from the kids tro the pets had a great time. If you are planning a trip to the Jackson Hole area with your pet, this is a MUST read before, and during your trip!!!

World Class Info for a World Class Spot
Does your dog dislike being left alone? More importantly, do you have a hard time leaving your dog, even for world-class travel destinations? Whether you are a would-be traveler to Jackson Hole Wyoming, or a local with a dog, this book will help and inspire you. "Doggy Doings" is, as the title says, a complete reference of information you will find nowhere else. There are chapters that will give you specific and immediately useful information such as where you can go hiking with your dog. For some reason, I particularly enjoyed the chapters with more "surprising" information: chapters that offered the kind of tidbits you like to think you never will need -- such as what to do if you and your dog encounter large wild animals -- bears or moose. The chapter on dealing with any type of emergency made for suspenseful reading. In all likelihood, most of us never will encounter those situations: the majority of the book deals with all the pleasures that you and your dog hope to find and can expect to find in one of the most beautiful spots on earth. This book, like the area it describes and helps you to access, is truly one of a kind. I highly recommend it and wish there were one like it for every area of the country. I liked how the book took into acount and reached for a true community of people, environment and animals. You will both enjoy and use this book.

Cousin Eddy Motorhome & Towing Truck Performance
Published in Paperback by Seamat Pub Co (October, 1997)
Author: Rod Lindberg
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

Ambitious project, realistic plan in the back
The book takes you through the author's project to upgrade his brand-new RV. He goes the expensive route, starting with special order equipment, then adding a super charger, replacing the exhaust system, getting a custom engine control chip made, and doing dyno testing at many stages of the project. It's well documented and clearly written.

Unless you're going to drive many miles each year, the full treatment probably won't be worth it. (By my estimate, the modifications will cost perhaps $10,000 to $15,000.) However, the back of the book deals with reality for the rest of us and he makes suggestions for less amtitious projects. I will follow many of his safety and easy-to-do suggestions, but won't go "all the way".

I would recommend this for anyone contemplating changes to his/her RV to increase performance of economy. Read it from cover-to-cover so you know what's possible and what each modification will do, then decide what's right for your rig and situation.

Unusually interesting, of good quality, gives good advice.
KPFK radio in Los Angeles praised "Cousin Eddy" as "unusually interesting, of good quality, well done, has good illustrations, and gives good advice" on its "The Car Show/LA" program Saturday, July 17, 1999. I listen to the show every week, and couldn't agree more!

Great book.
I loved this book. After taking some of Lindberg's tips, my motorhome went 7.2 mpg to 11.9 mpg. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it is saving me a ton of money this summer. Hope he writes another!
