A birder's guide to southeastern arizona
Taylor's updated version is an essential tool for anyone who is not familiar with s.e. arizona, and extremely helpful for those who are. It contains detailed descriptions of birding areas, maps, species to expect at different times of the year, and more. Rick takes you right to the hard-to-find Arizona specialties, as well as all the rest, and does it in an enjoyable manner. This book is fun to read even after leaving Arizona. You will not be disappointed with this one!

Where, what and when. THE book for birding SE Arizona!
This is a great resource for planning and executing a birding expedition to southeast Arizona. Excellent maps, detailed species accounts, and helpful directions and resource listings. This book tells you what specialties to look for at specific locations and when they are most likely to be found there. A great guide for birding southeast Arizona, from roadside birding to backcountry hiking. I especially appreciate the tear out maps of trails and inside cover maps of locations and ecoregions.

Great reference book
I have a 1997 version of this textbook. It is really wonderful for reference even after finishing the course that required it. My husband and son are using it also. It has answers in the back so you can check yourself. If you don't tear out the work sheets and just copy them, other members of you family or friends can use the book to improve their English also. It is really worth the money.

Good reference tool for any office
I am just completing a required class using this book. It takes you through our written English language by teaching how to identify each part of speech. This book also teaches correct punctuation, different kinds of phrases, and really makes you dig deep in your subconcious to remember nominative phrases, plurals, numbers used in sentences, etc... It's all the basic English in one book that a person needs for brushing up!

superb and engaging
I stumbled across this book by accident one day and it has turned out to be my find of 2001 -- one of the most enjoyable books I have read in ages. Taylor, a youthful New York journalist and poet, was sent out to California to file back dispatches on this wild, gold-filled, lush place in the seminal gold rush year of 1849, when California was a sprawling region, and not yet a state. And what a fabulous job he does -- this reads more like an engaging adventure narrative than non-fiction, and I could not put it down -- a reader is completely transported into another place and time. One cannot fail to be fascinated by the bustling, energetic, multi-ethnic, can-do place that was the west coast. If you know California, especially the San Francisco, Monterey and Sacramento areas, Taylor's descriptions of their still-untamed landscapes will be both familiar and strange, but always utterly lovely. His reports of the gold rush regions are extraordinary, as is his walk -- yes, *walk* -- from San Francisco to Monterey... this at a time when a galloping horse could get from San Jose to San Francisco in perhaps seven *hours*. Taylor is funny, honest, generally very clear-eyed and unsentimental, and his writing is of very high calibre. Kudos to Heyday Press for bringing this wonderful book to a new audience. I am giving it to everybody as a gift this year.

Eldorado--A Wonderful Visit to Wild California
Bayard Taylor, with the eye of the photographer for detail and composition and the writing talent of the professional journalist Horace Greely so willingly paid, provides the reader with a fantastic look at California of the mid-1800's. His vivid descriptions of the people, the events, and perhaps most importantly, the pre-development beauty of California's wild mountains, seacoasts, and valleys, made this reviewer (a native Californian) long for a time machine to allow visits to the wondrous collection of experiences described by Taylor. From his many travels across the land, to his viewing of the first California consitutional convention, his words allow the reader to feel the wind in one's hair as the California-bred horses fly at top speed across the valleys and through the washes, or to be a fly on the wall as the convention delegates reach compromises which shaped and prepared the State for it's Golden future. The pictures he paints of the natural environment of early California are so dramatic that they must certainly encourage all attempts to preserve the tragically few expanses of California landscape remaining. This is a book for Californians (and those who love the state) who wish to return, if only for a few brief moments, to the sounds and the sights of it's birth: raw, chaotic, beautiful, yet with a rich Spanish/Mexican heritage and social codes that provided a useable framework to maintain law and order. Taylor describes it all, allowing us to understand not only what was happening, but also why. It's a great book.

In Flight With Broken Wings: A Guide to Being LDS and Divorced

Amazon base price: $18.95

This book changed my life!
Being a mormon (LDS) and being divorced is like being invisible or a leper, which is just as Jennifer described! She spoke to me in a language I could understand because she's divorced also!
It's a funny, easy to read book, full of information about everything from the divorce process to starting a new relationship, internet dating, traps of relationships and even temple sealing clearances. I recommend this book to everyone in our position, no matter what the situation, whether divorced 10 years or in the circumstances now. Jennifer captured everything we need to know about healing and living full lives as those who are still considered "invisible" by church culture.

A much-needed resource!!
I've searched for years for a book that would put into words exactly how I felt about being a Mormon and having to go through the divorce process and heal. In our Church there are NO books or resources that don't sterilize or sugar-coat the experience. This book is wonderful, factual, full of great advice and examples of healing, developing new relationships, internet dating, children's issues, staying active and cultivating a positive attitude in a world of bitterness. Buy this book!! It literally described what I have gone through and has given me hope in a future relationship if I just work on myself! GREAT honest and factual information.

Great fun for the philosophically inclined in need of laughs
This is a one-of-a-kind cartoon book of pigs in various poses and settings that illustrate philosophical and theological viewpoints. It is very clever without being esoteric--the author knows his material well. The cartoons have an innocent simplicity that is arresting and hilarious. I have looked through this book dozens of times, and I still laugh at the pigs, such as "Nietzschean SuperPig" and "Kierkegaardian Pig Demonstrating a Leap of Faith."

It's is sad that his unique book is out-of-print. Try a book search, though; it is worth it!

Douglas Groothuis, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Denver Seminary

You'll never look at predestination the same way again.
This cult classic, well-known among professional philosophers, sketches the history of Western philosophy and theology in a series ofcartoons involving . . . pigs! One meets the Stoic pig, hip-deep in snow, defiantly facing the winds of adversity; the Anglican pig merrily tricylcing along the Via Media; the Rousseauean "noble savage" pig; the Nietzschean Superpig; the Kierkegaardian pig making a leap of faith; and so on. I saw the first edition of this book in a friend's collection over 20 years ago. When it briefly came back into print in 1992, I bought 5 copies, of which I still own 3: one to lend, one to keep, and one which, someday, I might give as a present.

It should be required reading in every Intro to Philosophy course.

Pure Jeffersonian Republicanism
John Taylor's " New Views of the Consitution of The United States" is a brilliant refutation of the Federalist and strong central government. Taylor, the most articulate exponent of Jeffersonian Republicanism, is at his finest here. In New Views he refutes the doctrines of Madison and Hamilton in the Fedrealist which declare the United States to be a " consolidated nation" and having a supreme national government, instead of a federal one. He points out the contridictions of the authors of the Federalist, and de-mystifies it's hold on the interpretation of the Constitution. He also destroys the arguement that the Supreme Court has the exclusive right to " interpret" the Constitution and has the final word. He outlines a Jeffersonian view of limited government, and it's role in a federal republic. His predictions of civil war and geographical
domination of one section of the union over the other are prophetic. Anyone who believes in states rights, republicanism, and democracy should read New Views. This friend of Thomas Jefferson deserves the look. He espouses pure Jeffersonian Reoublicanism.

essential reading for political science majors
New Views of The Constitution, by John Taylor is one of the best reads from the early 1800's on the issue of democracy and the constitution. I have an original first edition and it is one of my most prized books. Read it, if you can find it, and you to will have a new found respect for the development of our great nation's history of democracy.

Highly recommended
In over 20 years as a Christian, this is the best devotional I have ever read. It is thought provoking yet keeps the subject simple. Each day gives you something to ponder and the chronological order also puts a different approach on the gospels and Jesus' life. I would recommend it to anyone. In fact, I am buying several more as gifts for friends and family.

Great book to improve your walk with Christ
This is a great book for family devotionals. As a Christian it is all too easy to forget that others of whome have not yet given their lives to Christ don't really understand the 'Good News'. ONE YEAR with Jesus, is a compilation of the teachings and actions of Jesus. It is a concentrated form of the Gospel. It can effectively demonstrate to those that might be on the fence, the perfect love of Jesus, which is is the only thing that I think wins converts.

Excellent resource for learning Portuguese.
The Collins Pocket Gems are good at quick English<->Portuguese translations, but eventually you will advance beyond translating things back and forth and start to read Portuguese literature. At that moment, it is essential that you have a good dictionary on-hand to help with learning new words and their meanings.

This book offers tens of thousands of words, with pronounciations, English meanings, and usage examples. The first section also has a helpful pronounciation guide, and the back section has a list of verb conjugations that seems very complete. Overall, a worthy desk reference that bridges the gap between pocket translation and native language dictionaries.

The best Portuguese dictionary. Period.
This dictionary has every Portuguese word you can imagine. It is an excellent translator's dictionary. It has slang, technical terms, rare words and regional words. This dictionary is a valuable and much-awaited resource for translators or students. This is the definitive Portuguese-English dictionary.

A good book
I read this book and found it inspiring and helpful. I particularly found the secret that Hudson Taylor speaks of relevant to transforming and deepening immensely my own walk with God. Not only I, but years ago my father's life was dramatically changed as he was inspired to have faith in the God who took care of Hudson Taylor as a missionary in China. After reading this book my father was able to put confidence in the Lord to take care of him as he stepped out into full time Christian service. (Hudson Taylor relied on God to provide for all of his needs and would not tell others what his financial needs were. God was faithful to meet all of Taylor's needs as well as the missionary society he founded. But there is far more in this book than that).

If you are looking for a deeper, intimate walk with God then read this book. Or if you struggle with living faithfully, joyfully and consistently for the Lord then read this book. The spiritual transformation that occured to Hudson Taylor took place after years of service on the mission field. Many Christians, like Hudson Taylor did, will benefit to find the secret of that transformation. I did.

Inspirational and a testimony of God working in men.
A book for missionaries, which indeed we all are for Christ. This is a thrilling true story of one man's relationship to our Lord and what his life becomes in service to Him. All those who have dedicated their lives to Christ can learn a lot about living out the faith and what God can do when you put your entire being into His loving hands. What this man, Hudson Taylor, does in China, we have assurance that God also wants to do in our lives even right where we are. A blessing for the indivual reader, and subsequently for those around, affected by the ministry inspired.
