Excellence was Expected -- and Found!
As with all of Mr. Ludvigsen's works, "Battle for the Beetle" is expertly researched and elegantly written.

The book is notable for its collection of historic photographs, detailing not only the evolution of the Beetle itself, but also many other rear-engined automobile development efforts from the same time period. While Mr. Ludvigsen certainly delivers on the political intrigue promised by his book's title, he also does a wonderful job of helping us understand the societal context which caused the rear-engine movement to come into being; in this way the Beetle as a technological artifact is placed into its proper intellectual ecosystem, a more interesting viewpoint than the more common "design genius" mythology build up around its creator, Professor Porsche.

In fact, this is no mere buff book, but an important work in the study of society and technology and how complex technological artifacts come into being.

But don't get me wrong -- if you love cars, and especially if you love Beetles, read this book!

Battle for the Beetle
An outstanding account of the history of the Beetle, from the time of it's inception as the People's Car, to the decissions on what to do with the car and the plant which produced it. Mr. Ludvigsen provides an incredibly detailed account of the Beetle and the automobile of the '20s and '30s that influenced it and the world. A must read for history buffs and fans of the auto industry.

Battleship at War: The Epic Story of the Uss Washington

Battleship at War- the epic story of the USS Washington
An excellant book which gives the average individual an insight to one of the most remarkable ships in the US Navy. Covers the history from the ships design to her scrapping. Tells in great detail, yet in a very readable text, the story of the crew, the officers and the ship in World War II.

A great book about the premier American Battleship of WW II
Battleship at War catalogs the relatively brief but action packed career of USS Washington, one of the great ships to serve in the Navy during World War Two. Of all the American battleships to serve during the war, Washington had the most distinguished career, serving in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and sinking the Japanese battleship Kirishima during the Second Naval battle of Guadalcanal. This book righfully takes its place alongside Edward Stafford's "The Big E" (which narrates the career of the carrier Enterprise) as a premier work of the genre. It is incredible to me that both of these great titles are out of print, just as it is incredible to me that the richest country in the world could have failed to preserve these proud ships when other ships with much less distinguished careers survive to this day. Battleship at War is a must read for anybody who is serious about naval history.

Truck Love
Big Truck and Little Truck lived and worked together on Farley's Farm and Big Truck took care of Little Truck and taught him everything he knew. That is until the day Big Truck's engine wouldn't start. Little Truck cried as he watch Tow Truck pull Big Truck away. He had never been alone. "I'll be back soon," Big Truck assured him. "Just remember the things I taught you." Little Truck was sad and anxious, but he got right to work. He took all the fruits and vegetables to market. He drove alone on the highway and remembered to keep his lights on the road. And when he skidded into a ditch, Little Truck knew how to go easy and rock back and forth to get himself out. After a few days Big Truck came back home and he looked great. His engine purred and he even had a nice new paint job. Little Truck couldn't wait to tell him all the "big truck" things he had done. But there was no time to talk right then. They had lots of work to do on Farley's Farm..... Jan Carr has written a very tender and sensitive story about love and the fear of separation all pre-schoolers experience, from time to time. Her gentle text is complimented by Ivan Bates colorful and expressive artwork and youngsters will be entranced as they watch Little Truck triumph and become more and more sure of himself. This is a wonderful, reassuring story that helps teach self-reliance and the big lesson that separation isn't forever.

Excellent book for the little truck lovers
My son spent hours at the bookstore reading this book over and over again. So we had to get it. Amazing illustrations!

excellent book
THIS IS A WELL RESEARCHED AND VERY SCHOLARLY BOOK. IVAN VAN SERTIMA AS WELL AS THE CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS WORK HAVE PRODUCED MUCH INSIGHT ON AFRICAN WOMEN IN WORLD HITORY LIKE QUEEN NZINGA, THE CANDACE QUEENS, MAKEDA (QUEEN SHEBA, HATSHEPSUT AND MANY OTHERS. I FEEL THAT THIS WORK IS OF GREAT SIGNIFIGANCE AND SHOULD BE READ BY ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THE ROLE OF AFRICAN WOMEN IN WORLD HISTORY.

Another job well-done by Van Sertima!
Without being too lengthy, this book thoroughly covers the real and mythical images of the Black woman. It is a wonderful collection of essays from various authors such as the late, great John Henrik Clarke. Historical without afrocentricism. Balanced yet interesting. Do yourself a favor. Purchase the book and order tapes from the back of the book. Another fearless accomplishment by Van Sertima.

Bosnia: A Cultural History

Invaluable
A very special book.

One of the stereotypes about Bosnia and the recent conflicts was the common complaint that the history and culture of the region were impossibly complex, incomprehensible. The stereotype furnished a convenient excuse for those who wished to acquiesce in the organized aggression and crimes and the country and its people.

This short book is the clearest, most accessible account of Bosnian culture, history, and identity available in English. It should be the first book read in any discussion of Bosnia. Each phase of history--from the medieval period to the tragic wars and genocide of 1992-1995--is depicted with concision, humanity, and depth. The writing is lucid and the stunning black-and-white photo-illustrations are integrated with care and sensitivity into the narrative. Recommended not only for those interested in Bosnia-Herzegovina only, but for those interested in European history, East-West relations, and the dynamic of religion, culture, and identity; i.e. to both specialists in the Balkans and to the wide readership of those interested in history and culture anywhere.

The reader will emerge with a sense not of incomprehensibility, but of the richness, vitality, and uniqueness of an extraordinary place and people.

Must Read
An exceptional book, from an exceptional writer. Not that many people understand all the intricacies of Bosnain culture like Ivan Lovrenovic does. Simply, one of the best books you can read about often misunderstood Bosnia.

The Death of Ivan Ilych
The Death of Ivan Ilych is one of the most enspiring readings. It is written to allow the reader their own interpretation of what death and life are. It opened up many doors for myself, to look into what the future and death may hold. I believe everyone should have the insitefulness to read and be moved by this wonderful writing.

He writes of the fear of death no matter how good life is.
I am reading a short story called "the Death of Ivan Ilych" by Leo Tolstoy. In reading it I couldn't help but see what I notice in those that face terminal illness. There is the fear of the inevitable doom that each of us must face in life's passing, and how angry and bitter one can become, no matter how well one's life was before coming to the state of dying. As I turn the pages I cannot help but to see my father-in-law's struggle with his sickness, and Aunt Faye's struggle with hers. If you haven't read this short story, you should. It has a remarkable insight into the human attitude when faced with certain death. David Pinskey

Directing & Producing for Television : A Format Approach
Published in Paperback by Focal Press (28 February, 1998)
Author: Ivan Cury
Amazon base price: $44.99
Used price: $15.50
Collectible price: $23.29

Easy to read and broad in its focus
First and perhaps most important, this book is easy to read. It doesn't talk about technical things, but instead goes right to the heart of the matter: what you have to know if you're going to direct or produce a program. It also covers a broad range of shows--almost every format except sports and game shows. For the most part it describes multiple camera television directing, but that's used as a basis for understanding single camera TV. And there are chapters in which single camera television plays a significant role, most notably when Cury goes into documentary and PSA directing. I particularly liked the "who's who" at the facility, which covers the functions of those who work in television--from the executive producer to talent.

¡Excellent Book For People Interested in TV Production!
After reading this book, I have become a better producer and a better person. This book can help anyone from a student to a BIG TIME director. It is very clear in explaining the routine and features to help your show come together. A++

Excellent book for college drafting course.
This is an excellent college level text.I particularly like the detailed "real world" drafting problems for the students. Also it has a very good apppendix. It is comprehensive enough that we use it in three different courses here at Vincennes University.

EXTREMELY HELPFUL
I have had this book in my drafting library for some time now. I am always using it and recommending it. The book is laid out so that you can go from beginning drafting up through advanced. It not only says what the standards are, but walks you through drafting technology so that you understand why they are like they are. I believe that anyone that is going to be doing drafting should have this in their library.

Essential immunology

Author: Ivan M. Roitt
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $3.00
Average review score:

THE CHOICE OF MANY DISCERNING LEARNERS
The inclusion of all the latest abstruse developments in the field of immunology was part of a concerted effort to make this latest edition of "Roitt's Essential Immunology" standout in the crowd. It is an elaborate text whose popularity attests to its high quality.
Good enough, the traditional use of simple descriptions were retained in this new edition, while additional efforts were made in order to simplify most of the complex issues associated with immunochemistry and immunopathology. This textbook is a one-volume knowledge base whose accurate differentials are largely due to extensive facts validations.

Roitts is the definitive Immunology text for Medical Student
As a pre-clinical medical student, I was initially apprehensive when I came into contact with this book. Immunology is a subject I know little about, and the topic can seem more than a little daunting at times. Ivan Roitt's superb text soon revealed to me that my worries were unfounded. His guide through immunology is comprehensive and a pleasure to read. The content is both factual and humourous, written in the style of a caring lecturer rather than a boring expert (as with most medical texts). I cannot thank him enough for his fantastic book and hope he soon writes other texts on medical subjects (biochemistry needs a facelift, I think!!) for students to understand and enjoy.
