A poetic story of the Savior's birth
What a beautiful story. It is very moving. I highly recommend it.

A Story For Everyone
I decided to write this review because I love this book very much, I love this author/illustrator's beautiful work and I love this timeless mythological story. People say and rightfully so that this book tells the story of the night of Christ's birth. One of the reasons that I love this book is that it tells this familiar story that actually predates Christ by centuries without ever once using the well-known names of Bethlehem, Mary, Joseph or Jesus. You see, it is told from the perspective of the humble little donkey that carried the Mother who was pregnant with Her Son. A little donkey would know nothing of names, nothing of salvation, nothing of the doings of kings or priests or tax collectors. By telling the tale from this humble perspective no one is excluded from it's sweet and graceful message. I am a Pagan and at Winter Solstice or Yule I celebrate the Goddess's labor and delivery of her beautiful Son/Sun, the light, the sacrificial king who comes to renew the world, as the wheel of the year turns from it's dark half unto it's light half. The message of hope and life that the returning and growing rays of the sun promise to the sleeping earth fills my heart with gladness. I begin to anticipate spring and I renew my faith in the wisdom and love of the Earth's cycle.
The pictures in this book are exceedingly beautiful and tell the tale of the little donkey's dreams as he walks along. He doesn't know that he is carrying the hope of the world on his back, but he feels the magic in his dreams and thinks of a magnificent city glowing with promise, a huge rose glowing with softness and beauty, a fountain that waters the desert and brings the barren world to life with lush plants, and a sailing ship that carries him over the waters on his path. Like all good myths this story is timeless and transcultural. The symbols of one path speak the same language as others. The text is surrounded by lovely blue forget-me-nots on many pages and I think it is a gentle reminder to everyone to remember the inclusive message of the Winter Solstice and of Christmas that sees us all as one, bravely and faithfully facing the darkness together with hope in our spirits and love in our hearts. Ms. Berger uses a wonderful jewel-like blue color in many of the illustrations and it evokes a serene and peaceful feeling that adds to the overall message of the pictures. The Queen of Heaven is draped in the softly glowing folds of a starry sky and her little baby son gives off a gentle glow in her arms. The story is so gentle and humble. I love this book because it tells a story that belongs to the whole world and it doesn't make anyone feel left out.

a city, a ship, a fountain, and a rose...
"The Donkey's Dream" by Barbara Helen Berger is one of the most beautiful tellings of the nativity story that I have ever read. It is a crystal clear, beautifully simple look at the story of Jesus' birth and the journey that led up to it--all as seen through the eyes of the Donkey that carried Mary to Bethlehem.

As is usual with Ms. Berger's books, the illustrations are stunning. I am haunted by the forget-me-nots that frame these pages. The story is also told in an original, moving way...one that will not soon be forgotten.

I recommend "The Donkey's Dream" most highly. It would make a wonderful gift (especially at Christmas time) for any Christ-follower.

a tale about many things
I have fallen deeply in love with the stories of Barbara Helen Berger. She is a visual artist of stunning talent. Her pictures breathe with life and light. Her words are even more captivating. They are clear and precise...flowing like water from a mountain spring.

Gwinna is, in my opinion, Berger's masterpiece. At just over a hundred pages, it is a longer work. While Grandfather Twilight, A Lot of Otters, and the Donkey's Dream are great books for children, I would have to recommend Gwinna to children who are a little older or more mature.

Gwinna, at its heart, is a story of many things: it is a story about needing others, it is a story about giving, a story of love and faith and being true. It was a difficult story for me. I often suffer from knowing all too well were a plot is going to go before it gets there...to my delight, Gwinna kept me guessing.

The highest recommendation I can give, I give to Gwinna. It is a fine thing to read a story where the character grows in wondrous and moving ways within the imagination. The reader (unless they miss the story completely) must grow in turn. Gwinna is such a story...get it today.

Wonderous!
When I was first given Gwinna as a birthday present(oh, I don't rember what birthday!)I must admit I thought....."Yuck! ANOTHER book, what are my parents thinking? I want a Barbie." Well, I got a Barbie as the next package, but Gwinna has stuck with me much longer. This book is one of the best I have ever read. The moving story is backed up by some of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. Gwinna takes you to a place that you always knew existed, you just didn't know it exited anywhere beyond you own heart. As you are spun from word to word, and page to page, you will really feel as if you are flying. Now, on the main "Gwinna review page" it says this book is for ages three to eight. Well, I am fourteen going on fifteen, and Gwinna remains a huge influence on my life and one of my favorite books. When I say influence, I mean the same influence you get from reading someone like Tolkien or hearing a beautiful peice of music. Gwinna is a book that makes you feel as if you can reach out and feel the breath of its chairicters. If that doesn't convince you that this is a good book, I don't know what will.

If only there were more stars!
Gwinna is, hands down one of the best books I have ever read. Its moving and beautiful text are backed up by brilliant, exhilirating pictures. When recently I needed to find a gift for my 10 year old cousin I remembered this book. By checking with my aunt and uncle I discovered (to my horror) that we had never sent her this book. Needless to say, I jumped on this as the perfect gift. If any of you are picky shoppers (like me) you will know how hard the perfect gift is to find. It is not just for a ten year old that I would recomed this book either, it's still one of my favorites. Gwinna is one book I can say, without a doubt influenced me. It is the most moving "flight of fancy" imaginable. I recomend this book to anyone who has ever wished for wing to fly out over the horizon. I recomend it even more strongly to those of you who have not, because after Gwinna, you will.

To read again and again!
My kids just love Nate. Especially my son, who has sometimes struggled with his fine motor skills. He really identifies with Nate and his struggles, but especially his dreams! If you want a story to encourage your kids to try, and not give up when things are difficult then buy Nate by Night. Quiet enough for bedtime, but action- oriented enough to keep even the squirmiest of kids still! You won't regret buying this book!

Message for All
Nate by Night might be written for 4-8 year olds, but the message is pertinent to any age! What a wonderful way of depicting the "can-do" spirit in all of us. As the mother of grown boys and grandmother to be, it is refreshing to find reality laced with imagination in messages for our most precious resource!

A magical picture book for the delight of young readers.
Nate is an ordinary boy with brown eyes and freckles on his nose. When Nate gets discouraged because he can't do ordinary things like write his name or win a race, he begins to do extraordinary things other children can't---Like flying all night ...in his dreams. Even though Nate fails at writing his name on the blackboard, that night, Nate writes it on the biggest blackboard of all--the night sky. It was easy to get it right. All he had to do is connect the dots. And, one day, when he strikes out at baseball...in his dreams, Orion pitched him the moon. Nate swung hard and hit it clear out of the solar system. "Home run!" Orion patted him on the back. "Way to go Nate." In Nate By Night, Jessica Swaim presents an endearing portrait of a little boy who is just inches behind the other children in achievement. As a result of the confidence Nate picks up by practicing things at night in the stars, Nate soon discovers that his dreams are reality. Nate's flight of fancy illustrates an important message to children---to keep believing in themselves. Nate By Night is not only valuable for its discreet lesson, however, but for its whimsical journey to those starry places that shine in the imaginations of children everywhere. If you want a magical book that lets a child soar above the stars and then sets the child gently down on earth, Nate By Night is for you. Nate By Night is Author Jessica Swaim's first children's picture book. Her uniquely refreshing style and terrific, on-the-mark insights into the world of a child, combined with her talent for telling a wonderful story, make her an author that I will definitely keep an eye out for in the future. Amazing
I skipped the introduction of the book explaining who is who because it was boring. The book was though was excellent. It gave the after life from a beautiful and but limited viewpoint that gives you a glimpse of what one spirit experienced and relayed back to earth. This book truly captured me, not though any great detailed literature but rather its blunt forwardness of experience and humanness.
It is written by two retired nuns who were excedingly telepathic in the 60's. One passed and relayed her experience in the afterlife to the other.
It brings up many topics that one would find of the nature of death and life, but beneath it all it reveals what it is that truly makes life worth it all.
Definatly recommend, and commend this book

Fabulous Information from "The Other Side"
If anyone fears the change out of the body to the "other side" this easy reading book should calm all their fears. The author of the book is really the Spirit of Francis Banks, transmitted to her dear friend Helen Greaves after the death of her physical body (from Cancer in late 1965). Francis describes unlimited realms of Peace, Love, Hope and Joy for everyone.

Even those who have lived difficult lives and find themselves temporarily trapped in the "Shadow Realm" are constantly assisted to get themselves out, and into the limitless Realms of Light!

This is a fabulous, wonderful book which should be in everyone's library!

Book GIves Light on What Happens After Death of the Body
A wonderful read. Once you start reading you will not be able to put it down until it is finished. It will give the reader a peak at the other side of this dream life of ours. It confirms what I have felt, and believed. I highly recomend this book for those who are exploring their spiritual paths in life.

Volunteers: How to Get Them, How to Keep Them

Best of the Leading Books, But Not the Whole Picture

There are upwards of a 100 fairly good books on managing volunteers, and of those I selected four based on the information provided by Amazon and its readers, who now represent a critical mass of useful guidance. Of the four books, this is the best. If you buy only one, this is the one. (The other three were Vineyard & McCurley's "Best Practices for Volunteer Programs", Lee & Catagnus, "Supervising Volunteers", and what may be one of the originals (from 1994), Susan J. Ellis' "The Volunteer Recruitment and Membership Development Book." These latter three are reviewed in their own spaces.)

This book by Helen Little, as good as it is, would normally lose one star because it fails to provide an index or a guide to other readings (including web sites) in niche areas of volunteer management. However, it does provide excellent forms for each step of the volunteer management process and these are all downloadable from a given web address, so we'll call it even.

By way of larger context, this book, and books on volunteer management in general, are valuable not only for organizations that use volunteers as a resource, but for those who would manage citizen activism, as well as teen-agers with chips on their shoulders and a reluctance to bear down on chores.

While others have outlined volunteer "needs" and how to address them, Helen Little does it best. The 12 basic needs--applicable to neighborhood mobilization, regional political campaigns, and teen-ager "work for respect" programs--are very well and concisely listed: 1) specific manageable task; 2) task that matches motivation; 3) good reason for doing the task; 4) written instructions; 5) reasonable deadline; 6) freedom to complete the task; 7) everything necessary to complete the task; 8) adequate training; 9) safe, comfortable, friendly environment; 10) follow-up; 11) opportunity (for the volunteer) to provide feed-back; and 12) appreciation, recognition, and rewards.

As I read this thoughtful book, comparing what volunteers need at each step of the way--and the more advanced comments by the author on how to plan for succession at every level of the organization from neighborhood to national, I kept thinking to myself: "traditional political parties are dead." Both the Democratic and Republican parties are violating every single tenet of this excellent work on how to attract, motivate, and activate citizen-voters. It remains to be seen if our neighborhoods might yet self-organize. This would be a good book for anyone thinking about organizing any endeavor of free spirits, at any level of play.

New Knowledge & New Insights Found in Book
I have worked in the not for profit world for over 25 years as an association executive. I have also served on the Board of the Cerebral Palsy Center for the Bay Area for over 20 years. In each experience, the importance of finding and retaining and inspiring and engaging volunteer leaders is the factor that contributes to successfully achieving vision and mission. In the not for profit world, we are here to serve. The pressure to be the best at meeting the needs of those we serve never ends; the demands stretch our hearts and our minds; but in the not for profit world new knowledge, new ideas, new approaches, best practices, quality, and innovation can help meet important needs, and can even save a life. This book will inspire organizations seeking the best and brightest leaders, and is equally capable of inspiring the leaders we seek for our organizations. Well done and long needed by the field.

It will turn you around!
I hate to read books like this. Every once in a while I come across a book that is so helpful it stands me on my head. Really! After reading this book I felt a lot more confident to deal with thw 100+ volunteers I have in my organization. I would recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for volunteers.

HOPEFUL
The Assignment has given me HOPE. I never understood why things seem to happen in my life and in my families life over and over again. The Assignment has made things so clear to me. It has given me ANSWERS. ANSWERS to questions I was always afraid to even ask myself, let alone anyone else. The Assignment makes me understand why Indifference to many of my actions and the actions of others was so strong in my life.

The Assignment has enlightened my understanding on unseen spirits, on the reason why I have and do react a certain way, on the pitfalls that await me when I try to do right. With this understanding I now have a key to deliverance. A key I did not know existed.

I thank Pastor Swift for being obedient to God by writing the painful truths she has described in The Assignment. You see the family she has saved by being obedient, is mine and I know your family will be blessed also. I encourage everyone to read this book as well as her second book titled," One More River to Cross" May God bless her for her obedience.

RIVETING
I must say this book was absolutely riveting and brought out various emotions in me: sadness, sympathy, empathy, joy, etc. It really puts things in ones life into perspective. You really don't know until you've read Helen's story in THE ASSIGNMENT. Read it for yourself to discover personal solace!

If you want to know it's not just you. Read the Assingment.
As I was reading the Assingment, I immediately became capitvated by truth. It drew me closer and closer to God and to an understanding that I thought I would never receive. Pastor Swift went through trials that I couldn't even imagine. However, the spiritual trials are something we all need to come to realize "They are Real". Pastor Swift overcame "The Assigment with Gods Grace". Her obedience to God and her truth is what will set the captives free. I was looking everywhere for the truth but everyone would tell me what they thought I wanted to hear. Reading Pastor Swift's book helped me to Trust in God and God only. If you want truth and if you want to free- The Assignment is a book to buy and read and reread. Praise God for the Word He sent through his People. Praise God for the obedience of Pastor Swift.

Write to the Point
This book may be the handiest and clearest book of tips on basic business writing I've read in a long time. The book's tips on writing clearly and for the reader of the office memo or e-mail are direct, short and to the point.

It doesn't waste words but it doesn't omit a lot of topics, either. For example, a memo writer is reminded to "write as you speak--if you speak clearly." Thousands, no, millions, of words have been devoted to this topic. This one sentence sums it up nicely.

Some may quibble with minor points in the book. For example, it advises readers not to capitalize the "The" in newspaper names because some papers use a "the" and some don't. To my way of thinking (and training), that's a question easily resolved by finding out what the newspaper uses. But this is a tiny point.

I much prefer the authors' valuable and wide-ranging bits of information:

khan: lowercase this term, which is a title for a ruler, an official or an important person in India and some central Asian countries.

c.o.d.: Use c.o.d. with periods for all references. It stands for cash on delivery. Without periods, it could be confused with the word cod, as in fish.
saccharin/saccharine: Often misspelled. The first is a sugar substitute; the second means overly sweet.

And so on, touching on topics from A to Z, as billed. I highly recommend this book.

The Business Style Handbook
An invaluable tool. I just started back in the workplace after an absence of many years and this book put me right back on the business track. It even helped my son with the writing of his resume. Thanks for all the useful information.

The Greatest handbook
English is not my first language but I need to write clearly, quickly, and without errors to succeed in my job. This book is my secret weapon. It is well organized and easy to use. The A-Z section answers a lot of questions I have about language and the chapters on business writing contain good advice for writing more effectively.

a magical journey
The same helen and Ade Hoover who introduced the reader to a place in the woods, now share their intimate relationships with a deer family in the remote Minnesota forest they live in. After leaving successful careers in Chicago, the Hoovers decided to fulfil a lifelong dream and move to a cabin on a lakeshore deep in the northwoods. From the first page the reader shares in the daily challenges and sheer magic of their life in the woods. When Peter a fully grown buck wanders into their clearing a relationship that would last for years begins. Over the years Peter, his mate Mama, and their offspring become integral parts of the Hoovers' life. Helen Hoovers' descriptions of the quiet snow filled forest and the glorious summers in the woods are breathtaking. The hen Bedelia and other forest animals are endearing,But Peter, Mama and their young are a gift indeed. Their trust in the Hoovers is complete and unusual. If you want to spend a New Years Eve in a cabin in the northwoods listening to a concert on the radio by the heat of an old oil stove, and wake up to visions of a winter wonderland read Gift of the Deer. Its a book you'll read again and again.

This touched my heart.
Helen Hoover's beautifully vivid prose makes this memoir read like a fantasy piece. I felt I was sharing the precious moments that she and her husband Ade spent with the wild whitetail deer family who visited them at their log cabin deep in the Minnesota woods. Helen's richly descriptive style of writing draws you into their enchanting lifestyle, filled with peace, and the quiet mystery of virgin forests. The area around their cabin became a safe haven for a groundhog who became a regular houseguest, squirrels who nibbled graham crackers from Helen's hands, chipmunks, ermine, owls, beautiful birds of all kinds, and even a bobcat and a lynx. This is more than just a story about wild animals. It is a tribute to Peter, the magnificent whitetail buck who taught them so much about the dignity and majesty of wild things, and enriched their lives with his noble and gentle ways. This book is a treasure of a journey into some of the most peaceful, delightful, and rewarding places that a nature lover can go without leaving their home. I hated to see it end.

Animals are Human, Too.
There isn't much I can say about this book without spoiling the powerful ending. It's about a starving buck who was saved by the Hoovers, and his family (and there's no doubt in my mind that it was a family in every sense of the word). Mrs. Hoover's prose is beautiful and moving, and you will be very surprised at just how human that Peter, Mama, and their fawns could be. Ade Hoover's illustrations are also very good, and complement his wife's prose perfectly. The book had me riveted from beginning to end, and I read it in two sittings.

This book inspired me to learn more
I've learned a lot from this book, and am interested in learning more. But I agree with the reviewer who couldn't find jeweler's lacquer. I've tried a couple of different finishes and have yet to find one that holds up really well.

Hard to find supplies
I am new to making wire jewelry, I have a home-based jewelry business. I love this book and want to make many of the items,
but I cannot find all of the supplies listed. The one thing I haven't found and no-ones even heard of is Jewelers Lacquer. Does it exist, if so where?

Making Wire Jewelry
This is a great book! It's very thorough about materials, equipment (maybe even a little too comprehensive) and technique. You can use it as a self-paced text, since it progresses from very simple to complicated.

I'm still on project #1 (no time!) but I've looked through it again and again and plan to work my way through it.

As an adoptive parent I found the stories to ring true.
As an adoptive parent I found the stories in Parents at Last to ring true. It was so encouraging to see many different kinds of families gathered together in one book. There are many ways to go about creating a family. The only constant is love and commitment. Several of the stories reflect the parents feeling that their child was meant to be theirs. We also experienced that faith as we searched for our daughter 5 years ago. This is a beautiful book that I plan to share with our adoption support group.

Focus on love - no matter what form your family takes.
With their fingers on the pulse of American life, the authors of "Parents At Last" have captured the essence of the most important challenge facing us today - creating and nurturing families. While the media focuses on the breakdown of the family, this book focuses instead on creating family in its many forms - adoptive families, blended families, families who experience the wonders of cutting edge technological fertility. Through it all the underlying truths of family shine through: humor, communication, and most of all, love.

A compassionate book filled with hope.
This book offers hope & compassion to many people with the goal of creating a family. As the Mother of a stillborn son 18 months ago and with added discouragement of not yet conceiving again at age 35+, this book offers hope that there are alternatives to building my family should I need to go that direction. It's nice to know that I'm "not alone" in this quest. It was also wonderful to hear about the book on the "Today" show; that's what prompted me to purchase it.
