Good for beginners.
Did not find anything new for myself in that book, even though it has a lot of content and most likely will be helpful on 70-059 i find this book a bit boring..

Great book, tough test.
Along with the official Microsoft Press book on TCP/IP, I used this book to study for and pass (855 score!) this very tough exam. This is a very good book that distills exactly what you need to know for the exam. However, I would not use this as your only study/preparation tool. This book does a very good job explaining the differences between WINS and DNS, LMHOSTS and HOST files, NetBIOS names and FQDN's. This stuff you really need to know cold, I mean backwards and forwards. The book's discussion of the tricky subject of subnetting is not adequate. Find another study source to master that subject.

Nice, Quick Way to Brush Up On TCP/IP
I found this book to be a helpful companion (along with the TCP/IP chapter in "Mastering Windows NT Server" by Mark Minasi) in passing exam 70-059. I have had several years of experience with TCP/IP but this book does a wonderful job of filling in on some topics that you might not do on a day to day basis. This book, coupled with my experience, led me to pass the test on the first try. One quick note though: when you buy study guides, be sure you are getting the newest edition, sometimes shopping gets confusing with so many versions. I will buy from the exam cram series again.

Great Book...needs a little touchup though.
This book helped me to pass the 70-58 exam with a 900 and I don't really have any networking experience. I would highly recommend it. I would however appreciate it if the publisher would reveiw it again for typos which seemed to be present in quite a few places. This could throw someone like myself off.

GOOD BOOK ...
This book helped me pass NetEss with a 933 .. It is a good book with very clear wording, which any person could understand.

I did find that there were a lot of typing and spelling errors, which does become a little much. It covers all that you need to know for the exam and will be core credit to passing. YOU MUST... also take some online tests which simulate the MCSE exam itself.

The book will definately go into my "handy kit" and will be a great referance. The reason this book lost a star was because of it lack of information on RAID(and typos!). Use another source of information for this topic! IT IS IN THE EXAM! Microsofts description of this would be the best to study.

ENJOY.. I HOPE YOU ALL PASS

Can be used as a Networking Learning tool as well
I used this study guide along with Sybex's Test Success (ISBN:0782121462, read my review)and both helped me pass the 70-058 with a 900/1000. My only complaint was that WINS and DNS topic coverage in this book was null, and I was tested on these topics in more than one occasion on the real exam.

This book takes a while to read, but it gives you a wealth of knowledge. You will feel that you have actually learned something, which makes this book an excellent networking-terminology learning tool as well.

The CD tests included are challenging and they provide a good measure of your real exam readiness. I'd recommend taking these tests once each and only after you have mastered the material completely. The reason is that the test questions (and answer order) are not randomly generated and taking these tests more than once might actually hurt more than benefit your learning.

I recommend this study guide for its value as an exam tool and a networking reference. Complement it with a Cram book, the Sybex's Test Success book (mentioned above), or a source of practice exam questions (Measureup or Transcender) to tackle the NetEss test with confidence.

Why Was Dr. Michael Swango Allowed A Second Chance?
In most instances, writers put together a book about people and events in the past tense. James B. Stewart, though, soon realized after starting this book that he had become an active participant in a drama to stop a murderer from killing again. Stewart had a duty to put a stop to this terror. What might possibly motivate Dr. Swango? The doctor did not seem to financially benefit from these deaths. There is also no evidence whatsoever that Swango was prompted by any misguided humanitarian concerns. Dr. Swango's apparent only motivation is the psychopathic thrill of putting his fellow human beings to death. He seems indifferent and callous towards all suffering. There are strong suspicions that Swango even murdered his loyal wife. A court of law will likely convict Swango in the near future. The questions will still remain, however, concerning the scandalous behavior of the legal establishment that allowed this horror to continue long after it was obvious a serious problem existed.

I was morally and intellectually appalled by an earlier Amazon review by an anonymous "reader from Omaha, N.E.," a medical professional, who had the audacity to charge the author, James B. Stewart, with biased reporting. These comments should be read by all who are trying to understand how Dr. Swango was allowed to continue his criminal behavior for so many years. One should indeed take it for granted that the Dr. Swangos are the exception, not the rule. Most medical facilities probably would not have hired Dr, Swango after his conviction for poisoning his fellow co-workers. That's not the point. Once is enough. The disgrace is that there were not sufficient procedures in place nationally to prevent Dr. Swango from ever again practicing medicine. A single conviction of such magnitude should have ended the career of Dr. Swango in 1985. The following murders resulted from the gross arrogance and incompetence of a medical community concerned primarily in preserving its power and privileges. A democratic society must not allow professional establishments to protect their own regardless of the consequences upon the wider community. Lay people must not be excluded from directly overseeing the behavior of the professionals. The latter deserve respect, but not our unquestioning laissez faire toleration. The recent actions of the American Medical Association in preventing legislation to prevent a reoccurrence of another Dr. Swango is outrageous to say the least. The new motto for the AMA should be "We protect our own, and the general public should go to hell!"

Thank God James B. Stewart zealously pursued this story. The overwhelming probability is that without Stewart's efforts---Dr. Swango would still be killing patients. Many people owe their very lives to Stewart. It would also be sad if this book is merely perceived as a superbly written true story about a particular murderer. "Blind Eye" is also a disturbing commentary how power and cowardice corrupts professional groups who have forgotten that their first duty is to the general public, and not to their own membership.

A psycopath with an M.D. is harrowing indeed.
Mr. Stewart has performed a valuable service in exceptional style by exposing Michael Swango,M.D. as a psycopathic killer who takes advantage of the weaknesses in our policing of physicians. My only surprise is that this book has not been a consistent best-seller. Mr. Stewart has created a very readable thriller that says much about our society today. Dr.Swango literally gets away with murder and no one seems particularly interested in making sure that he is stopped. One gets the distinct impression that Dr. Swango is well aware of that fact as he continues to move through various medical venues. One is also left to wonder why some of Dr. Swango's various victims are so willing to overlook his obviously strange habits and personality traits. As an orthopedic surgeon, this book is particularly hard to digest. Although the vast majority of physicians are honest and capable, the changes in healthcare insurance have had a deliterious effect on medical care and, at times, medical judgement. Our legal system, believe it or not, is very poor at protecting patients from substandard or dangerous care. Lawyers have little interest in the overt malpractice unless it can pay off in big dollars. Lawyers can also subvert peer review and other methods that could help protect the public from bad physicians. Consequently, a medical-legal policing system that cannot stop a Michael Swango needs an overhaul. Mr. Stewart's next book should be on HMO abuses and the efforts that the medical insurance industry makes to de-rail appropriate medical care. That book would make Den of Thieves look like a nursery rhyme.

Coming Soon To A Hospital Near You!
I don't know who is worse. Is it the doctor, the subject of this book, an alleged murderer of 35 or more hospital patients, or is it the arrogantly stupid physicians who let him get away with it in not one, but at least five hospitals? Michael Swango is a licensed physician who seemingly has a compulsion to kill people. Possibly a narcissistic psychopath he evidently enjoys injecting poisonous substances into hospital patients, friends and co-workers. Slipping arsenic into the ice tea of fellow paramedics is what got him his first prison sentence.

He first started his alleged killing spree during a residency at Ohio State University Hospital. He evidently continued his bizarre activities after prison during residencies at the University of South Dakota, and at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Why does a physician felon convicted of poisoning people continue to obtain medical residencies? Here's why. The physicians conducting the admissions programs are too incompetent to properly screen his application, even though he admits to being an ex convict. Then after patients die left and right, and nursing staff turn him in to the medical staff, the doctors refuse to believe their testimony. One key witness was a student nurse. It was quickly agreed by medical staff, as they all rolled their eyes, that no one should really accept what a student nurse has to say.

One doctor conducted an egregiously incompetent investigation of Dr. Swango's activities. Another was equally negligent in screening Dr. Swango's admission to a residency program. What punishment has been meted out to these two physicians? They both are now working for the Association of Medical Colleges in Washington, D.C. where they oversee the application process of all medical school residents in America. Isn't that wonderful?

Dr. Swango now moves on to work in African hospitals where the death toll continues to rise. Suspended from one hospital for his suspected murder of several patients, he secures another position at a hospital nearby while the police investigate charges against him. Returning to the USA he is arrested, tried and convicted on a fraud charge. He will be released from prison any day now, and presumably might join the medical staff at a hospital near you.

I normally don't read true-crime books, but, having spent my entire career in hospital management, the topic intrigued me. It reads like a thriller, and believe me the behavior of the doctors (excluding Dr. Swango) in the book didn't surprise me at all.

Supplement your studying
This was the first and last NT Server 4.0 book I read. I used the New Riders NT Server 4.0 book for studying. I passed this afternnon with flying colors. The EXAM CRAM alone is not for passing the exam. Rather it is designed to 'refresh' you as you study. I read the Exam Cram Fact Sheet in my truck as I was 15 mins early for my exam. That was worth its weight in gold. I wrote it all down using the 15 mins you have to do the 'practise' exam (DO THIS!!) Would I recommend it - sure I would. Yes, it has some errors, but ALL the books I have read ALL have errors. This is well written, clear and gives you the 'nudge' you need to cross the finishing line. I am busy with Exam Cram for NT Server 4.0 in the enterprise. I am confident I will pass that one too: just need to catch my breath!

Remmended for Exam Preperation
This is verbatium of the memo I released to my company of a suggestion of what books to use for the MCSE Exams. "Gentlemen, In researching suitable material for MCSE exam preparation, I have found that Exam Cram is accurate and would help in passing the exams. I have tested the NT Server 4 (Exam # 70-067) book by taking two Trascender demo exams with it and passing both times using the material found in this book. The material in the book is presented in an easy to follow approach with detailed examination of each answer in a typical question detailing what makes it correct or incorrect. I believe that the other books in this series will have the same level and type of information found in this one. I recommend that we purchase the Exam Cram 4-Pack (Core Edition), published by "Coliolis Group "

Great test preparation
After reading the exam cram for NT Server, I am absolutely amazed. This book condenses the information necessary to pass the MCSE NT Server 4.0 exam in a manner which is easy to digest. The only problem I have with the book is that it is too good at what it does. Working with NT Server on a daily basis, I fear that making the MCSE too easy too pass will help flood the market with paper MCSEs. It is for that reason alone that I cannot give this book a solid 10.

Great Windows 98 learning tool !
The Windows 98 exam is one of the toughest - it proved that way for me out of the four MCP exams I have taken so far. Don't think you know Windows 98 for the exam just because you have been using it for years and know how to use the contol panel. The Exam goes heavy into the networking end of using Windows 98, particularly as a client in an Windows NT4.0 or Novell domain. There is lots on the test having to do with Novell integration, TCP/IP configuration and troubleshooting, file utilities, user and hardware profiles, the registry, dial up networking, troubleshooting, boot sequence, system policies, mutimedia capablilities, and security/sharing. The exam has lots of scenario and simulation problems. Exam Cram is a great book to use as a supplement to a full study guide - I used Sam's Teach Yourself MCSE Windows 98 in 14 Days and was very happy with it. A lot of hands on using your computer with Windows 98 to try doing things as you learn them is very helpful. Even though you might not be able to use Windows 98 on a network you can still install and configure most everything you need to do to pass the exam. Exam Cram will help reinforce what you have learned and if you feel unsure about an area of study then you can refer to your main study guide to bone up on that area. The book has a very good focus of what is important to learn for the exam. Exam Cram also has a couple of hundred practice questions - some at the end of each chapter and a 59 question practice exam at the end. The practice exam is tough and the answer section is done in such a way as to explain why a particluar answer is right and why the others are wrong, which will help you learn. I also recommend the book to anyone who just wants to learn the full capablilies of Windows 98. I read a few general purpose Windows 98 books that did not cover ANY of the more advanced topics that you will find in a MCSE type book. Exam Cram MCSE Windows 98 is well worth the money!

One stop shop for the Windows 98 Exam - 70-098
I am currently self-studying to obtain my MCSE. This was the third book I picked up to study for 70-098. I wish it was the first! An over-abundance of information, no messy typos and technical errors. I read the Sybex book and they left a lot of details out that I needed for the test! This book is great and may be the only one you ever need however I also recommend the white & green paperback books - Accelerated MCSE Windows 98 70-098 as a supplement to this book. Those two together are an excellent pair. Forget about the Sybex book, too many typos and sloppy writing prevent it from being truely useful. I passed the exam with 709/1000 BTW... barely passed on the first shot.

Must have study guide
After taking eight Microsoft exams, Win98 is the hardest that I have found and I am very thankful to have had this book to help me through it. The Exam Cram series has been wonderful and this installation is no exception. Of all the study guides that I used for the Win98 exam, this one was by far the best. I would suggest supplimenting it with the Windows 98 Resource Kit.

Excellent, portable quick reference to HTML 3.2
The main things that I like about this book is that it is small, light-weight, and easy to find things in. I carry it in my briefcase, so that I can use it at home, as well as at the office. There is nothing so far that I have needed to know the syntax of that I haven't found right away in Hip Pocket Guide. It is not a thorough, in-depth reference to HTML, but it is just the thing when you can't remember the format or allowable attributes of an HTML tag.

I will be purchasing the HTML 4.0 version.

Small, quite good, not perfect.
Good indexes and some accurate guidance. Mostly it is great. The authors seem to be more familliar with the extensions from Microsoft than Netscape. It seems somewhat incomplete for example: Netscape 3.0+ supports WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes of INPUT TYPE=Image and can scope FONT around H3 and OL neither of these are listed.

Handy reference for all web page authors
Rather than haul around some massive tome on web page authoring, get this handy spiral-bound guide to all the popular supported HTML tags. They're all listed alphabetically with syntax and rules. Navigator- and IE-specific information is clearly identified. I use Microsoft Front Page to develop the initial drafts of my pages, and then use this book to clean out the extra garbage so that both Navigator and IE users can use them. This book is a good value for programmers.

Good, but not enough by itself
This exam prep is good. I used this book in addition to the MCSE exam cram 70-210 put out by the same publishers and I was able to pass the exam.

Strengths:
It's a good Sorce for RIS, RAS, and computer configuration: desktops, accessibility options, basic share and file security.

Failures:
They could have covered group policies and multilink remote connections better. I was able to get through a couple multi link exams questions because I had written the NT 4.0 exams and remembered some of that information.

This book is good, but I wouldn't use it as my sole resource. If your are brand new to Windows 2000 check around for some supplementatary resources.

Worth reading
I just passed this exam and I can say that this book gives you enough info to pass. It does put accents differently then the test, and some of the questions were not covered in this book, but overall you should be able to make it.

Excellent!
After reading Thomas Shinder's appalling, mistake ridden exam guide and failing the 70-210 exam I bought this book, read it and passed the exam easily. I found this book easy to read and understand and to be accurate, with the exception of the practice exam at the back of the book, which has some typos. This is definitely worth reading and I would have bought the book from this series for the 70-215 exam if it had been written by the same authors. The chapters covering Netware and Unix, which you need to know about for the exam, were excellent - everything you need to know if you don't have any practical experience in these areas.

Excellent Study Tool for MCSE Test
I just took 70-058 for the second time and passed with a 913. For my first try I had trained with a very poor CD Rom training program from another company. I augmented that with this Exam Cram book. I came within one correct answer of passing (775), and the only reason I came that close was this little Exam Cram book, as my CD Rom course didn't nearly prepare me for what I'd see on the actual test. This little book alone, at a fraction of the price of that CD Rom course, nearly helped me to pass that first time. The practice questions at the end of each chapter are excellent. And I would recommend getting the Exam Cram four-pack as it includes a CD with an extra practice test that the book doesn't have, and believe me, these practice tests were very helpful. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that it has a few errors in it, so be sure to check their web site. It could also use some more info on troubleshooting, which was hit very hard on the test! But, all in all, a great buy and great value and will get you well prepared for this test. Take it from a guy who had very little prior network training. I would guess that anyone with a little bit of network experience, this book, and the Transcender, or CICPrep tests will be able to pass. Plus, I would also advise people to complete all six courses, if you have time, before taking any of the tests as the subjects compliment one another and the repitition will do you good. Anyway, you can bet I'll be using the Exam Cram series for every test I take!

Passed Networking Essentials 1st Time! Great Practice Tests
The practice exam questions throughout the book are worth every penny you spend on this book! The Exam Cram is like a Cliff Notes for the test, so I do recomment getting Microsoft's Networking Essentials Self-Paced Training for Supporting Local and Wide Area Networks, as well as Transcenders Netcert exam. With these three combinations, you can't go wrong. In fact, you will pass your first time out. As I said, the Exam Cram is like Cliff Notes, so you will def. want to do other reading. Their glossary is excellent! And they also have a cram sheet in the front of the book! Look over it before taking the exam...it helps!

Networking Essentials Exam Cram Well Worth the Money!
As a supplement to other study materials, Networking Essentials Exam Cram was a great resource in studying for exam 70-058. I don't think I would have passed the test without studying this book. The information is condensed but the high points are stressed. Important details related to the test are explained very well. This book is a great way to reinforce the overwhelming volume of material contained in the larger study manuals available for the test.

Great test prep, but be careful

I rated the exam cram for NT Server very high. I cannot, in good faith, do the same here. While this is still a great book for test preparation, there are far too many typos and outright errors to give this a better rating.

Most of the errors are not significant enough to confuse anyone with NT experience (which is highly recommended for MCSE certification anyway). For example, anyone who has gone through the installation documentation will know that there is no /OS option for WINNT (it is /OX) despite it's inclusion in chapter 3.

Overall, these types of typos/errors are more an annoyance than a showstopper, but they should be mentioned. There are a few that could confuse those who are not familiar with NT, but not enough to bring about a failing score on the MCSE exam. If you are diligent, this book will get you a passing score. My advice: get the exam cram pack so you can take the practice exams. I found at least as valuable as the books.

Great review companion for a more in-depth study book
Despite a few errors and being a little thin in a couple of subject areas (most notably Domain-related issues), I found this book to be a terrific review companion to some of the larger, more comprehensive guides to WS4 (such as New Riders, Alan Carter, etc.)

I read this book after covering Coriolis's larger Exam "PREP" book (which I can't recommend) a few days before my test. This book & its sample tests covered much material NOT found in the PREP book. This book, combined with the Transcenders, gave me the ability to score 933.

I have read many reviews that complain about the 11+ pages of errata that Coriolis has provided at its website for the various editions of this book, but I think they are overreacting. What many of these reviewers miss is the fact that most of these corrections have already been assimilated into the newer editions of the book. If your book's publishing date is 1999 or later, you have little to worry about. As Coriolis says, "This page was created so that even those with the earliest printings of each title can have access to the most current updates."

This being said, there are still a few lingering errors, and I even found one case where a question in the 1st sample test directly contradicted a virtually identical, but reworded, question in the 2nd sample test. I forwarded my findings to the publishers & was surprised when Ed Tittle personally replied within one day. They may not have wiped out every single error, but at least they're staying on top of things.

Overall, this is an exceptional review book & a darned good value for the money.

The exam/cram series is a must for certification bound techs
I have used numerous other study guides for the NT 4 workstation. I got a good understanding of NT, but not good enough for certification. On the transcenders prep test, I scored 610. The certification path involves too much study materials and I have not been pleased by all the materials I've read until I found the exam cram series. This book finally made the NT make sense to me. I was able to make a bootable NT floppy. Make sense of the shared permissions versus local permissions. The book will clear up so much for the individual on the certification path. I am very confident now of my NT knowledge and I'm ready for the exam. Wish I had bought the whole series for $69. I would have given it a 10 but it does have a few typos, but it's not bad enough to damage the quality of the book.

Get ready to spend a few hours correcting errors
First the BAD NEWS. It's hard to believe that a bookset that's had as many as 9 revisions can still contain so many errors. (Check out www.examcram.com and look at errata info) I spent several hours cutting and pasting the errata updates into my books. After spending 5 hours on NT 4.0 WKS, the first book in the core-four set I worked on, I got mad and emailed Coriolis. One woman blew me off saying "if I purchased the books directly from Coriolis (at full retail price) then she'd be glad to ship a free replacement set". A second woman was more helpful and sent a free replacement core-four set. However, I looked at those books in the new set and one of them was currently in need of updates. Within 6 months they all needed more updates.

THE GOOD NEWS ! Once you get the errata in the books updated, they are one of the finest study guides out there. I especially like their ALERTS and TRICK QUESTIONS throughout the book.

YOU MUST BUY THESE BOOKS!
YOU! Yeah you! Stop what you're doing and buy these books. These are the greatest MCSE test books on the planet. 80 bucks gets you an almost guaranteed 2/3 of an MCSE credential. Go buy their TCP/IP book too. It's out now. It's section on subnetting is absolutely incredible! The sad news is, the IIS 4, Proxy 2, and Exchange 5.5 books won't be out for a couple of months. The end of chapter and end of book tests questions are first rate too. (The guys who wrote these books also sell computer based test banks for about a fifth of the Transcender price.) The first printing of these books did have a some typos and one question from outer space, but the ones I've bought recenty as gifts have been cleaned up considerably. The bad news is that with these books out there, Microsoft will have to make the certification tests considerably harder to keep the pass rate down.
BTW, I like these books.

I can't rave enough !!! Buy these books now !!!
I have passed a total of 4 exams using the exam cram books and 4 without their help... these books are cheap at twice the price and they saved me literally hours and hours of studying and hundreds of pages of reading - assuming you also have some experience.

The Exam Cram pack saves you $20 from buying the books separately and buying them from amazon saves another $20, and you also get a cd of test questions that were pretty good as well.

There are some minor typos but show me a technical manual without them.

Anyway, I can't rave enough !!! Buy these books now !!!

They helped me pass networking essentials, NT Workstation, NT Server, and Frontpage 98 on the 1st pass! What more can I say.

Good Luck on you studies.
