Excellent introduction to the world of Pokemon
I bought this book for my 7 years old son with his first Pokemon deck, and started reading it during my flight from Sydney to Cairo. It was very interesting to the extent that I finished it all in one shot. It is truly one of the most wonderfully illustrated book I have ever seen. It helped me a lot to understand the Pokemon phenomenon and communicate with my son. It helped him also to share the Pokemon fun with his peers. The CD, which comes with the book, is excellent for both learning as well as practicing the game, and deserves the price itself.

Essential - but always be sure to get the latest edition.
I don't know if or when any of you is going to find himself / herself in this particular area, but anyway here it is...

This is the latest edition (8th) that was released only about a year ago. Things really changed in this edition compared to its predecessor; more authors are involved and new and updated information is added (though many sections remain).

Important note: When it comes to Myanmar, things can change for better or worse overnight due to the nature of the ruling government, while some other things tend to stay the same. Especially here, pay close attention to all the small details given in the chapters "Facts for the visitor", "Getting there and away" and "Getting around" - they matter greatly.

=============================================================

As a whole, the guide will be a valuable asset for you if you're planning on traveling there, and there is absolutely no doubt whether to buy it or not - it's an essential purchase. To a great extent it will help you plan your budget, your destinations, how to get there and when, what to bring and so forth.

You should know that there are some beautiful places to visit in the country. One of them, the Shwedagon Paya in Yangon, strikes me as one of the most beautiful man made structures in the world. Imagine a 100 meters high Stupa (Buddhist religious monument), all covered with golden leaves, set on top of a hill, in the center of smaller golden temples and Buddha statues. The sight was breathtaking and alone was worth coming. Another famous place, yet less astounding, is Bagan, the city of Stupas in the north. There you can find numerous Stupas some of which were built more than 1000 ago. And yes, almost in every city and town you will see at least one golden Stupa (that immensely contradict the poverty of the people) that give Myanmar the name "The Golden Land".

The tagline on the cover of this book is "should you go?" It is misleading due to the fact that the answer they give inside is "yes". If you want to go - go, the political status is not of your concern, you're a traveler not a world freedom fighter. You wouldn't help the local people by avoiding the country - they benefit from your staying there - and that is all that you should care about.

Nevertheless, the authors don't really prepare you for the level of poverty you're going to meet there (the same way another author hasn't done in the Cambodia book yet); this is one of the poorest countries in the world and that's why you should always be careful and never trust anybody - they're there for your money (mostly). I really don't like, after being around, the attitude of "the locals are so nice and we can learn so much from them"; some of them are really nice and helpful, but others are nice because you spend your money there and it's downright blatant. Expect it; don't fall for it and BE CAREFUL of forced and immediate friendliness. Remember that as a tourist you're regarded as very rich and compared to them you are.

I want to mention the fact that as a traveler and a guest you will receive the best services even in budget hotels - they treated my friend and me like royalty in each and every hotel, and that was something we really enjoyed and appreciated. It's the best service all over South East Asia, and it does say something about the people as a nation.

I hope their days of freedom will come soon. ...

Meeting the Add Challenge: A Practical Guide for Teachers

Right on target... Not just for teachers
I originally purchased this book because my child is a patient of Dr. Gordon's. I not only bought the book (and the worksheet book not shown here) for myself, but I quickly purchased a set for my child's school and my sister as well.

The information and approach are straight forward, easy to understand and most of all, easy to implement. They don't just give you a way to "solve a problem", they teach you the core theories, which then enable the family and school to customize their approach.
I have purchased many "ADD" books, and this one far surpasses in quality and presentation. The second runner up (and has more worksheet templates inside) is "Add/Adhd Behavior-Change Resource Kit : Ready-To-Use Strategies & Activities for Helping Children With Attention Deficit Disorder".

If you purchase this book, I STRONGLY recommend that you also purchase the accompanying workbook, The AD/HD forms book: Identification, measurement, and intervention. [Contains 30 forms and checklists for children and adolescents with ADD/ADHD] ...

I am glad I bought this book by mistake!
I thought this was another great book by chef Michael Chairello about Napa Valley wines (see my review). I had no idea that I was supposed to write it!

As it turns out this will be a great little book in a few months, depending on how many bottle of wines I drink or buy. It is a very classy looking, well manufactured, spiral bound hard cover book. It is a little less than an inch thick. Steven Rothfeld's beautiful photographs are on the cover and on each divider leaf.

Rigid tabbed dividers separate the book into eight sections: Why Keep a Wine Journal?, Tasting Notes for Red, White and Rose wines, Cellar Records for Red, White and Rose wines, A Brief Glossary and finally, Wine Shops and Web Sites. There is a color matching elastic band to either keep the book closed why you are carrying it or to keep your place as you buy or taste or drink your wines.

The note pages are well thought out. The Glossary is a big help in describing what you see and taste. One interesting entry is whom you shared the wine with and what was served with it. Chef Chairello's point of view is that if you include the specific wine drank along with the dinner menu and the people you shared the event with you will have very vivid memories of the wine. If you think about it he is absolutely right.

When you take it with you on your wine adventures be sure and put your name on it and a method whereby you can be contacted if you, Heaven forbid, leave it somewhere.

The two-inch thick paper back 2002 edition of Parker's Wine Buyers Guide by Robert M. Parker, jr is available. Leave this [X] book at home, but be sure and take your personal wine journal that YOU are writing with you.

Notebook of a Sixties Lawyer: An Unrepentant Memoir and Selected Writings

One of the Best Books I've Ever Read
I had a fantastic time reading this book, I couldn't put it down, infact I stayed up all night. This book gives a splendid overview of Michael Smith's experience as of the time he wrote the book, using articles he had previously written as well as new text. At the same time the book also gives very good detailed accounts which flesh out the book and make it a narrative. If you want to know about the social movements of the 60's in a very real and upfront way, really gain an understanding of that time, I recommend this book.

A Definite Hit!
OK--let me admit right away that I'm not a "kid," I'm in my late 30s.

While this book wasn't published for my demographic group, I still LOVED it! The storyline is simple but interesting, and everyone will pick up new facts about the octopus. I've been studying octopuses (the correct pluralization) for several years now, and even I learned new things! And the illustrations are gorgeous, truly capturing the beauty of the deep seas and the wonderful patterns and tones of the octopus. The only drawback to this book is that it's so small!

If you get a chance, buy the book in the "special edition" that comes with its own stuffed octopus!

This is a definite hit for kids of any age and a great way to introduce a wonderfully smart and interesting animal to people who otherwise would completely ignored it.

Excellent book
This International Security reader is a great collection of the recent work in the realist tradition in International Relations. Here you can read the "classic" authors (like Waltz and Walt) and the "new generation" (Schweller - excellent - and Zakaria). The introduction, written by the editors of the volume, is wonderful: it really "maps" realism and its authors. There is also two essays by John Mearsheimer, the "hardcore" realist and his gloomy "Back to the Future" article. Great book and certainly worth the money. This is the best book in the "International Security" readers series.
