Martin Scorsese: a Journey
Published in Paperback by Vintage/Ebury (A Division of Random House Group) (14 September, 1992)
Authors: Mary Pat Kelly, Steven Spielberg, and Michael Powell
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Great Book for Scorsese Fans & Students
Examines Director Martin Scorsese's career from the beginning to Cape Fear (although it seems that the book had to go to press before Cape Fear was actually released, as there's a discernable lack of substance in that chapter).

To gather wonderful tales of how Scorsese works, Kelly interviews the director's friends, family members, casts, and crews. Oh, and the Secretary to the President of Cyprus!! (See details about The Last Temptation of Christ). Quoted stories, observations, and comments all contribute to a fine portrait of one of our greatest active cinema artists. (And, to the delight of film buffs everywhere, text shows that Scorsese is first and foremost an unabashed movie fan)! Kelly's system provides the reader to form own opinions about Scorsese, rather than making a lot of critical conclusions.

In pursuit of my undergrad degree, I used this book quite a bit for research toward essays I wrote about Scorsese's films. Not at all a chore to read, it was a very enjoyable book, great for the fan as well as the film scholar.

Good index, good filmography. Brief forewards by Michael Powell and Steven Spielberg hint at more than a bit of pure jealousy!

fantastic bio!
this is one of the best, in-depth bio's that I have read. And what a subject! Martin Scorsese is a god-like director that has made such films as Good Fellas Casino and Taxi Driver. The book is filled with interveiws from fellow directors and drew/cast etc. Great format! It's like reading a behind the scene's documentry.

BUy it!

Very engaging and entertaining
It is 1849 and Mary Mclean and her family are fresh off the boat from Ireland. Mary is excited to hear about stories and traditions from Ireland that are told by other members of the Irish community where she lives. One of the things she gets told about is the St. Patrick's Day parade. Mary is excited about this and all the stuff that surrounding it. More than anything, she wants to be part of it so she asks Mr. Finnegan, a local shop owner, if she can ride on his cart in the parade with him. Mr. Finnegan agrees but only if Mary McLean can find a perfect shamrock. This is an almost impossible task because it is winter. Mary searches and searches and she can't find one. She finally stumbles across a leprechaun who says he'll give her one later. Months later, he is back the day before St. Patrick's Day. Mary captures him and asks for the promised shamrock. The leprechaun says he lost it and tricks Mary into turning away. Mary goes home dejected. Her father comes home with a surprise! He found a shamrock for her and Mary is able to be in the parade. She's very happy.
This book is priceless. The artwork is fabulous and reminiscent of Norman Rockwell. The artwork is very engaging. Each page is laid out exactly the same. On the left side, there is the text. On the right side, there is a color illustration. The moral of the story seems to be that good things do happen to good people. This is a wonderful theme. It also seems to have a theme of good things happen to those who wait. This is something important to instill in children because so often they want things right now this very instant. The story line is entertaining and easy to follow. It is a wonderful book to read.

Children love the fantasy and excitement of a leprechaun.
This is a story of a little girl who searches for a four leaf clover so she can be in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. The fantasy and excitement of a leprechaun appeals to my students. It lends very nicely to creative writing in the classroom. This is a must, especially for primary teachers.

funniest one liner ever
I have only read the first two pages of this book, but I already give it five stars for the joke on page two. In his critique of Kaufmann's (whom he calls a soft Nietzschean) critique of Nietzsche, Green says something to the effect that one gets the idea from Kaufmann that the overman could very well be a Princeton philosophy professor! I have still not quit laughing.
I just hope the rest of the book is this good!

A Nietzschean Epistemology?
Green's work deserves a prominent place in contemporary Nietzsche scholarship for several reasons. Firstly, he refuses to shrink back from the many weird or odd things that Nietzsche says; Green isn't interested in "domesticating" Nietzsche so that he sounds just like another analytic philosopher. Secondly, he insists on the connections between Nietzsche's thought and the philosophy and science (both natural and social) of his day, thereby making Nietzsche look like less of a Wunderkind and more like a serious philosopher, deeply engaged with the thinkers and issues of his day. Thirdly, by placing Nietzsche's epistemology in relation to Kant and neo-Kantianism, Green succeeds in showing both that Nietzsche does in fact have an epistemology (which both traditional analytic philosophers and more "postmodern" thinkers have doubted) and that his epistemology has little in common with the "pragmatism" and "empiricism" with which English-speaking philosophers are comfortable. In short, Green demonstrates that Nietzsche not only believed very strange things, but that he had excellent reasons for doing so, and those of us who are attracted to both Kantianism and to naturalism should follow Nietzsche's lead in working through the consequences of these positions.

My primary criticism of this work would be that "the French Nietzscheans" (i.e. Derrida, Foucault, and above all, Deleuze) are rudely dismissed early on. Green implies that Nietzsche should be read as a "naturalist" and not as a "postmodernist". But why accept this false dichotomy? Given the ways in which Nietzsche radicalizes traditional (i.e. Kantian) categories by way of his Heraclitean naturalism, it at least seems plausible that the post-structuralists are following Nietzsche's lead quite faithfully. One of the origins of "postmodernism" would then be seen to lie in the conflict between Kantianism and naturalism that animates Nietzsche's work.

Ondine's Curse
Excellent, brilliant writer. This century's most psychologically intuitive author. You squirm when you read his stories; so real you feel like you're in the mind of his subjects' most intimate, and often dangerously exciting, thoughts. The reviews were excellent!

His new book of short stories 'Wound Ballistics' also blew me away with his insight. I couldn't put either book down and a week later found myself reading both books again! They got even better.

Best book of the year!
This book blew me away - mysterious, perverse, awesome mood piece. As dark as Kafka, echoes of Pynchon (the earlier stuff). It's about a "Biography"-style TV reporter, Robert Strasser, who has to interview a world-famous psychiatrist, Dr. Werther Acheson, who's this weirdly machiavellian character. His history is the history of 20th century psychiatry with all its perverse twists: crackpot cures, drugs (who knew Ecstasy was developed by a drug company at the turn of the century?).
Along the way Strasser meets Ondine, a patient at the psych institute, and tries to dig information out of her. He falls in love but Ondine's really damaged with posttraumatic flashbacks. She's this id character, trying to understand history (she's a historian) emotionally rather than intellectually.
I've got to mention Dr. Kotzwara, one of the people Strasser interviews. This guy's a shrink studying paraphiliacs (sex disorders) - totally out there doing these wild experiments.
Sex, drugs and psychiatry - very intense. It'll warp your mind. Like a really smart William S. Burroughs on 21st century drugs. Unforgettable!

A must read on SFAS 141 and 142
If you need to comply with SFAS 141 and 142, you will want to read this book. The authors understand these standards inside and out. The book's coverage is practical, thorough and written in easy to understand language (which is important because the changes outlined in SFAS 141 and 142 are far reaching and complex.) The best part of this book is that in addition to providing compliance guidance for SFAS 141 & 142, it also shows you how to apply the standards. This is key! I also found the book helpful on showing me how to identify and value intagible assests which is still a somewhatnew area for me.

Great coverage of new SFAS 141 and 142
This is timely and excellent coverage of SFAS 141 and 142. The authors' explanation are clear and complete. I would recommend this book to everyone involved in valuation.

Excelent Intro
This book is divided in 3 big parts: -Data Structures -Program Development -Program implementation. I'm only referring to the first part (the one i've readed). This book presents Data Structures in a very simple, and visual way (with very comprehensive schemes on how it works on memory and the flow of program, etc.), because of that it is the perfect book to start learning Data Structures.

Bluegrass from the Best
I was reluctant to buy this book because it was about bluegrass music, since I am learning blues. This was, that is, before I heard a song played by Mike Stevens. In this book and CD, he teaches and plays all of the techniques that have made him one of the best harp players in the world, if not the best. The book uses a simple tablature notation that makes learning the techniques a pleasure. The author's comments are also simple and to the point making it a snap to understand his style. However, the techniques themselves are not easy, they are professional level material. Anyone will greatly profit from this package. If you really want to find out what can be done with a ten hole harmonica in the right hands, then this book will show you.
