weak collection
the poems in this collection range from merely mediocre to bad. the major theme is being indian and the wrongs done. but if you are familiar with alexie's worth than that won't surprise you. and his sister's death by fire makes an appearance in several poems. the problem is alexie never says anything new in this book. you could pick any five poems at random and that's all you need. the other poems say the same thing. there is one bright spot, the first section of his poem "Inside Dachau", but it completely falls apart after that first section. i hope that one day alexie will select his best 10 poems and the best of his short stories and put out a selected poems and prose, that way instead of having so many mediocre books, maybe we can get one book that is really good.

abstract
This book seems the most abstract of Alexie's works to date. Containing the same insightful, introspective and powerful images and descriptions as his past works, this one differs in that it is slightly less "in-your-face". Keeps the reader thinking, wondering what the underlying meaning of the work could mean. This is not a spoon-fed collection of easy to read poems. Keep this one around awhile for study and contemplation. Truly inspired.

admiration and awe
This collection of poems is woven beautifully together. Like his other books of poetry and novels this book is thought provoking, humorous, disturbing and wonderful. Once again I am left breathless at the end of one of Mr. Alexie's book wanting more. I found myself weaving in and out of the book, reading one poem then returning to a previous poem because of the way they interconnected. A truely wonderful experience and cannot wait for the next release be it novel, poetry or film by this young talented writer.

The Effects of Esoteric Development: Ten Lectures at the Hague March 20-29, 1913 : And the Address Given at the First General Meeting of the anthropo

COMPLEX AND DETAILED
These lectures were delivered at The Hague in 1913. In them, Steiner attempted to elucidate the modifications that the human being undergoes when practicing the exercises provided in his books Knowledge Of The Higher Worlds and Occult Science - An Outline. He thus goes into the minutest of detail in describing the physical changes, which includes becoming inwardly more mobile and more vitally alive. Different kinds of foods are also discussed. Lecture 3 deals with the etheric changes with special reference to the senses, whilst Lecture 4 deals with time and the seasons. Lecture 7 contains an interesting look at the Manichaean Bishop Faustinus, the 16th century personality Johannes Faust and Goethe's Faust. Lecture 8 deals with cosmic consciousness or the paradise imagination as Steiner calls it. He concludes with an encouragement to those pursuing esoteric development, that it is the right thing to do and in harmony with the evolution of the universe. I found the book to be very technical, detailed and a bit long-winded, perhaps because I do not understand all the terminology and references. I have the highest regard for this writer, but unless you're familiar with Theosophy this book will be difficult to read. Many of his other works are more accessible and digestible to the average reader.

Road map to the next stage in evolution.
It is of practical importantance to know in advance the effect that esoteric exercises will have on the souls of those who choose to practice them. This book could only have been written by a master, for it gives complex details of the spirual changes that can occur in the soul when exercises in esoteric development are practiced. It allows one to recognise when real changes are occuring, to trust them, and grow with them. This book can serve as a sure guide for the seeker in a world where true masters are in short supply. The descriptions are brillant in their completness and invaluable for those pursuing inner self-development. I am personally grateful that Dr. Steiner gave so much detail, making possible the journey of our spirit to its home a more sure one.

Interesting, but misnamed
First, this book isn't about Freud & Jung. Those two names are briefly mentionned as being totally wrong and not understanding anything. Steiner also takes the time (this is a collection of lectures) to enlighten is audience on the reason that people who disagree with him are also in error and incompetent.

This apart, this books present some of Steiner's views on spiritual psychology. I found his ideas on the unconscious to be interesting and presented in a clear way, but left me on my appetite. Maybe this can be seen as a good complement to Steiner's other books.

Bearing the test of time
Freud, Jung, & Spiritual Psychology: Selected Lectures by Rudolf Steiner is an acclaimed collection of informative and insightful lectures that he gave during the early twentieth century. Bearing the test of time, Steiner's examinations remain highly relevant to modern psychoanalysis and spirituality. Among Steiner's claims are that, because Freud did not recognize spirit, his way of thinking excluded the experience of the human soul. From reflections upon the threefold structure of human consciousness to musings on the depth of the soul, Freud, Jung, & Spiritual Psychology is a unique and highly recommended psychological perspective of the meeting of mind and spirit.

Excellent resource for the subject
Teachers and Homeschoolers, these are wonderful chapters of history. The style is like a history book, but not the material. The photos certainly aren't any I've ever seen and they seem to be chosen for thier personal feeling. The text is great reading, easily comprehended and leaving room for a childs imagination. Of the series, Cornerstones of Freedom, this one and The Great Depression, were my favorites. 2-3weeks on the lesson plan is all you need.

A good 2nd or 3rd book in your medieval studies
Rowling takes you on a wide-ranging journey through the Middle Ages, demonstrating an encyclopedic knowledge of her subject. As you'd expect from a 220-plus page book on a thousand-year period, it is not exhaustive, nor is it necessarily chronological, but there is plenty of interesting and often entertaining information here. Chapters cover categories such as "Lords and Vassals", "Pilgrims and Crusaders", "Monks and Friars", and "Doctors and Patients" each in a roughly 20-page span, making it easy to read a chapter in an evening. A generous amount of humor is included, such as the story of Heribald, a "somewhat weak in the head" monk at the monastery of St. Gall who refused to leave when Magyars, "uglier than Danes but somewhat better natured", invaded and drove all the other monks out. After an initial beating the Magyars befriended Heribald, plying him with wine to make up for the beating, and he wrote approvingly of them in one of the many chronicles Rowling has tapped here as sources.

I would have preferred more maps (there is one at the beginning), but there are several good illustrations from the time period, as well as a detailed Chronology of events at the back, for reference and a Select Bibliography. One manner in which Rowling goes beyond the typical middle ages introduction is to lightly touch on the sociological trends at work in this period and before. This book is part of a series of "Everyday Life In" books; the final chapter, "Scientists and Technologists", points the way, with the proliferation of paper and moveable type, to the modern age.

Goethean Science

A marvellous introduction to Goethean science
Rudolf Steiner, the well known scholar of Goethe and himself a prolific author, reviews and brings to life, using his own experience, the "Goethean Way of Science" which, contrary to the current science practised today, is full of vitality and so to speak living in the phenomenon, Goethe stresses the ability present in the human being of : "...the most exacting instrument" he does not mean this in the same way as say a measuring device. He notes that all of the investigator's senses must be used including his/her innate ability to obtain a feeling/sense of the phenomenon under investigation. This may appear to be full of mistaken subjectivity and yet Goethe stresses that it is the full experience of the phenomenon that leads to a true understanding which is objective in more ways than science practises today. He states that in order to avoid such subjectivity which easily arises from fantasy of all types the investigator must develop a new organ of "exact sensorial imagination" which takes its cues not from idle thoughts or an expression of the person's ego but rather through the experience of the phenomenon itself fully and with complete attention. This demonstrates the fallacy of Kant's and Hume's objections to man's ability to think intuitively or to experience the world as it truly is. It allows the scientist to be fully alive in the becoming of the phenomenon. Such as science would appear to be beyond current thinking and yet it was already present in the 19th Century. It is such thinking which allowed Steiner to create his school of "spiritual" science, where the meaning of spiritual is far removed from the normal interpretaion and lies in this ability to be objective in Goethe's sense. Whether the book fully succeeds in this approach is arguable and it appears that Steiner himself diverges from this path at times, however as an expression of Goethe's method in science it is an invaluable tool to begin your own investigations of natural phenomena safe in the assurance that the experience of nature with every sense is not a "crime" and can be trusted as a true objective experience of the phenomenon.

Magic, Witchcraft, & Religion
I currently use this book as the text for a class I teach at California State University, Chico (Anthropology 40: Magic, Witchcraft, & Religion). I was fortunate enough to have taken this and other courses from the authors Arthur C. Lehmann and James E. Myers. This book serves as a good reader for comparative religions and focuses on non-western societies. Articles on western belief systems are used for comparison and contrasting with the non-western examples. Although targeted for the freshman level, the text assumes the reader have some understanding of anthropology.

Life but few letters?
The book Nelson The Life and Letters of a Hero is an interesting book with a few new slants on the history of this famous naval officer. I had anticipated actual copies of some of his correspondance. That is not, however, the thrust of the book. It is basically a compendium of illustrations from throughout Nelson's life with a following narative. The book is profusely illustrated with a few pictures/illustrations that I have not seen in other publications. Double check your copy when you get it. The copy I have was published by Collins & Brown in England. Apparently a company with rather sloppy quality control. I now have a third copy of the book having sent the first two back for replacement due to faulty printing! Check the pages around 141: they seem to consistantly "double printed" in the text giving it a shadowed appearance. It is still evident in my third copy but is "tolerable". The first copy I received had about 8 pages that were completely unreadable!
