Excellent!
Reflections of South Carolina gives an excellent glimpse into all that is South Carolina. Photographs range from the beautiful beaches along the coast to college campuses and the biggest cities to the smallest counties throughout the state. The photographs by Robert Clark are exquisite and make you feel as if you are a part of them. You do not have to be a South Carolina native - I'm not!- to appeciate this book. Makes a wonderful gift to anyone who loves this state.

A dazzling spectacle of an artbook
Robert Taylor: Air Combat Paintings Volume II is a dazzling spectacle of an artbook, filled with black-and-white as well as full color images of aerial combat paintings, especially those related to World War II air battles. An extensive, in-depth commentaries and history adds a special depth to the origin and moment captured in these heart-stopping works of art. Robert Taylor: Air Combat Paintings, Volume II is a recommended treasure trove of great air combat illustrations for aviation and military history buffs. Also highly recommended is the companion compilation, The Air Combat Paintings of Robert Taylor: Volume 1 (0715314300, £20.00).

THE fracture care reference
Felt by many to be the Gold standard in orthopedic fracture care. The text is comprehensive, providing in-depth literature reviews and the authors prefered method of treatment. The text formatting style makes it difficult to quickly/easily obtain the "need to know" information regarding a particular topic. Overall, well worth it.

A quietly moving, appealing and informative book.
Sacred Land Sacred View was written to help honor, record and preserve navajo beliefs and heritage about the Four Corners areas, more than to present a scholarly work on changes in Navajo belief and thought. In the beginning, the author quotes Joseph Campbell's four criteria for a belief system to be a viable force in a person's life. They are (1)mystical function, enabling person to live with awe and gratitude toward the supernatural forces of the universe, (2) attunement with the knowledge and science of the times, giving adequate explanation of how things occur that does not conflict with the understanding of the physical world, (3) validation of the teachings and practices of the morally acceptable in cultural context, and (4) It is a guide to spiritual harmony and strength in a useful life (paraphrased, page 5). Sacred Land Sacred View attempts to reconstruct legends, prehistory, tales of the Navajo that contribute to the criteria above for peoples of the Four Corners. Black and White Photos of scenes and formations help clarify the legends and Navajo histories associated with specific sacred sites. A tone of reverence sets the scene. There are also important views of the Navajo's perspectives on earlier cultures such as the Anasazi. The recurring theme, however is the resolution of cultural dissonance by the Navajo, and, perhaps by implication, all western culture. "Returning to the metaphor given earlier, the new generations of the Dine can 'sleep' through the teachings of their elders or they can be like the student, who said, regarding the holy beings, 'If I were awake, they would say I am their child.' The choice is an individual expression that every Navajo person will make. Whatever each decides, may it take him or her on a path of beauty over a landscape that has meaning and the power to teach and protect (pp.130-131.)" Sacred Land Sacred View is a quietly moving book, designed to appeal and to inform. Brigham Young University/Chas. Redd Center for Western Studies/

Great book for nature lovers!
Cliff Swallows are the life passion of Charles and Mary Brown. Every summer for the past fifteen years Charles and Mary have left the University where they are teaching and journeyed to Ogalalla, Nebraska to study these fascinating colonial birds. In his book, "Swallow Summer", Charles Brown gives the reader an insight into the day to day life of a research biologist. This true story of a summer filled with birds and data collection is told in an intriguing and humorous manner.
Brown lets the reader look into not only his life, but also the life of this fascinating small bird. Cliff Swallows nest in large colonies in culverts, cliffs, and other such areas around Lake McConaughy in Nebraska. During the summer Charles and Mary deal with not only the Cliff Swallows, but also a number of young research assistants from all over the world who come to Ogalalla to study research biology with the Browns. Often the antics of the research assistants are as amusing as those of the Cliff Swallows.

hilarious and true adventure tales
Lummis was a real character with a 'perfect body and awakened mind' who walked from Cincinnati to his new job in Los Angeles in winter of 1884-1885. His adventures are terrific and his self-confidence supreme and enabling of his success. He was open and accepting of all people, flamboyent, bombastic and an asset to the development of Los Angeles, its library, the Southwest Museum and the peaceful relocation of the native Americans to reservations. (He had been appointed to that task by his Harvard classmate, Teddy Roosevelt. Clean, funny and very well written!
