Good read, Great insight
The title itself is somewhat misleading. The text is not, per se, an autobiography as authored by St. Ignatius but rather, is a transcript written from memory of the results of several interviews with the Saint by a fellow Jesuit. However, the insight into the character of Ignatius through the report of the autobiography is remarkable. Further, the story of his life itself provides wonderful background for exploring the socio-historical context Spiritual Exercies of St. Ignatius.

Life Sandwiched "Between Donuts"
If the cover attracted you to this book, you are not alone.

Pictured are a chocolate donut with a bite from it, a jelly filled donut awaiting its fate and a deputy sheriff badge #507 with the name Paul St. John Fleming inscribed at the bottom of the shield.

"Ahh, copper stories," we might think. We all know the symbols, the jokes. Trouble is, we still wouldn't have a clear idea of what the book contains. These "copper stories" are unexpected. They have heart. They might cause a reader to laugh and cry. They will certainly cause a reader to reassess his view of what a cop does-besides eat donuts.

There is a heart warming story about an English constable who influenced the author to become a cop. One, called "A Cold Day in Hell, " is about the day author Paul St. John Fleming's duty it was to guard a plane that had crashed in a city street; the corpses of two children were in it. Another is a humorous piece about a pie-eyed Santa who Fleming encountered one Christmas eve when he was given a choice to "work Christmas night or work Christmas night." These are mostly vignettes, mostly reprints from columns Fleming wrote for the Salt Lake Tribune, and many are set in Salt Lake City. There are 50 in all.

A little like donuts, these tiny tales are addictive. You probably won't be able to read just one.

Discreet to the point of obscurantism.
Colonel Arnold's chronicle (with a Fifth Army patch oddly misidentified on the cover as that of the 473rd Inf. Reg. (sic)), is remarkable mostly for what it doesn't reveal. The author was G-3 (Plans and Operations Officer) for Division Commander Major General Edward M. "Ned: Almond, one of the most controversial officers of the American Army of World War II, and the man many consider responsible for the poor combat performance of the 92nd.
"Buffalo Soldiers" is useful for the detailed accounts of troop movements and Orders of Battle of the division and related units, but readers seeking a detailed analysis and evaluation of the division should see Shelby Stanton's excellent "Ten Corps in Korea", which organization also had racial difficulties and was commanded by: Ned Almond.

Excellent detail of the divine liturgy
Although written by a Uniate priest, this book presents a scrutiny of the Orthodox liturgy which is indispensible for anyone interested in studying the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The first part of the book deals with the history and evolution of the different liturgies throughout the century. The rest of the book, after the first 200 pages, is a detailed analysis of the liturgy including rubrics and theological background.

Outstanding "2nd in a series of 3" on the U.S. Constitution
This history lesson picks up where "A Constitutional Journal" leaves off. The Constitution has been written and agreed to by the members of the Convention of 1787, but it is not the legal foundation of the new Federal government until it has been ratified by 9 of the 13 newly-independent States. Mr. St. John's presentation and writing style -- as a newspaper reporter writing the news of the day -- captures the drama, including more than a few political shenanigans, and sense of urgency to ratify the proposed Constitution to maintain a cohesive union of the new United States of America. A great way to learn the most essential part of American history -- essential because we live it today. I urge you and your high school-aged children to read it.

Concrete Petrography: A Handbook of Investigative Techniques
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (03 February, 1998)
Authors: D. A. St. John, A. B. Poole, I. Sims, and Donald A. St John
Amazon base price: $250.00
Average review score:

Overall this is an excellent book
St. John, Poole, and Sims are internationally known experts in concrete petrography and their book brings together information from a wide range of sources. The primary focus of this book is the use of the petrological polarizing microscope for the study of concrete and related materials. Petrographic methods used for many years in geology are also valuable in the study of concrete. The book assumes a working knowledge of the petrographic techniques. Chapter two includes a brief description of petrographic examination techniques and chapter three discusses sample preparation. The main body of the work provides a detailed discussion of the use of petrographic microscopy to study the composition, appearance, and texture of concrete and related materials. A chapter on the examination of deteriorated and damaged concrete, also, is included. Color photomicrographs included throughout the book enhance its value. The detailed index makes locating specific information relatively easy.

Overall this is an excellent book but the audience is somewhat limited. It is most useful for petrographers studying concrete and related materials but should be useful to users involved with the characterization and testing of concrete who are not familiar with these methods. It is therefore recommended for university students.

A definate must for the Gorey connoisseur
More fun than Betsy McCall cut-outs! This toy theatre recreates the stellar sets of Broadway's Dracula (Cort Theatre). EXPLORE:The delightfully gothic decor at Lucy's abode, and Carfax Abbey. IMAGINE: yourself drawn - no etched into the maudulent world of smoldering sensuality, stolen glances, and mysterious things that-go-bump-in the moon-drenched- night. HEAR: The tap-tap-tapping of long, bony fingers scratching on the window glass in Lucy's room, beckoning her closer, closer... FIND: The subliminal visually prosaic "Ode to Chiroptera" (i.e.bats) embedded in the renderings of the Abbey, the clouds, .... Stoker would be proud!!

Teen Power!
I read this book in German, as "Die Geheimnisse des Zauberers".I only have got 3 Teen Power books, and I¢¥m not sure if I can still buy some in Germany. But let¢¥s hope it. In the "Sorcerer¢¥s Apprentice" Tom is the one who is telling the story. I like him very much, because he nearly (never) looses his humor. Of course, I like the other teens too, but it was interesting to see what a person is in Tom, not only the joking boy, but also a sometimes offended teen. Sid, the magician is also a nice person to think about a bit more than to see only the joking old man. I think Tom and Sid are a bit from the same typ. Well, this shan¢¥t be more than a short note, so TEEN POWER!
