Dancing Cats and Neglected Murderesses
Published in Paperback by Workman Publishing Company (1980)
Author: Edward St. John Gorey
Amazon base price: $2.50
Average review score:

A placidly homicidal terpsichorean feline romp, in two parts
This surreal little volume allows one to wander through increasingly subversive snippets of two seperate(?) topics, at once both unnerving and delightful in their irreverent seriousness. The sections of the book, specified in the title, diverge in feeling as well as content: the dancing cats serving as the light side to the darker, and more snidely witty foray into the realm of neglected murderesses. As always, Gorey's spindly, expressive drawings are at the top of their form in completing the numerous shadowy verse vignettes that make up each half of the book.

Hunting Wild Turkeys in New England
Published in Paperback by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (1986)
Authors: Stewart J. Bristol, John Noya, st Bristol, and John Noga
Amazon base price: $8.95
Average review score:

great book for the new england turkey hunter
I read this book some years ago and found it invaluble to anyone who hunts wild turkey in the new england states. Instead of giving general turkey hunting info or focusing on southern states as many books do, this one tells about tactics for the northeast and gives a lot of historical turkey data for each of the new england states. Unfortunately, I lost my copy a few years back and since I was able to locate it at Amazon.com I will be buying a new one. Mike Koffink

Inxs: The Official Inside Story of a Band on the Road
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (1992)
Authors: St John, Inxs, and Yann Gamblinhas
Amazon base price: $13.95
Average review score:

Great book of the best band ever, definately worth reading
It is amazing, that this is the only book on one of the biggest bands in the world, and by its sole existence, it should have 10 stars! It is a good book, especially because it contains lots of really, really good pictures, most of them from from the 1992/3 X-tour. The text-parts tend to be not-so-interesting, beacause they mostly are concerned with general observations on the bands achievements, and not so much with the actual events. There are, however, lots of interesting quotes from interviews with the band members. One positive thing is that all the stupid, slimy stuff about Michael Hutchences personal life has been left out. The book is 100 percent about the band. On the down-side, I think the book is a bit too sterile. The band members appear like such a bunch of nice guys, and I am sure they are, but come on, after touring and touring and touring, you have got to be pissed about something! To me, INXS was the best band ever - both musically and in the signals they sent to their audience - so I may not be the best person to review this book. But I think it is definately worth reading, and I can only recommend it.

Liddell's Record
Published in Paperback by Louisiana State University Press (1997)
Authors: St. John Richardson Liddell and Nathaniel Cheairs, Jr. Hughes
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

with the varnish off
General St. John Richardson Liddell was a biased, cantankerous, violent man devoted to the Confederacy yet doubtful of its ultimate success. This is history with the varnish off; Liddell wrote this record immediately after the war and never expected it to be published in his lifetime. It's one of the essential texts for understanding the Confederate Army of Tennessee and provides great insight into the personalities of its commander. More importantly, it reveals in great detail the mind of one former Confederate.

The Little Brothers of St. Mortimer

It is funny, and it is interesting
Don't let the Kirkus review stop you from reading this book - it is well-written, interesting, subversive --- and funny! I enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed 'Feast of Snakes' by Harry Crews.

Love Laughter and Tears
Published in Paperback by New American Library (1979)
Author: Adela St.Johns Rogers
Amazon base price: $2.50
Average review score:

She was there!
Quite simple, in fact, this review of A.R. St.Johns book. Not a classic, but something you ought to read if you are very interested in Hollywood and its population of stars... Rogers knew them all and she has a way to tell you about them, especially as being a friend of Valentino and a protector of Clara Bow. She had a long career with Hearst papers (and a friendship with him and Marion Davies)and was one of the first lady reporter to cover hot actuality as the Lindberg kidnapping trial. She likes details, but not always accuracy (several critics said so.) To know more about her, see her other autobiography, the Honeycomb. Quite a lady...

The Magical Message According to Ioannes: Commonly Called the Gospel According to St. John
Published in Paperback by Kessinger Publishing Company (1997)

"The acid test for those who insist that they are born again
This is quite a different interpretation of the New Testament book of John, but it is, perhaps, one of the most accurate, none the less. How do I know this? Because the book describes the experience of the person recieving the spirit far better than the traditional translations do. Those of you who have been there will know what I'm on about.

The Monastic Institutes: Consisting of on the Training of a Monk and the Eight Deadly Sins: In Twelve Books

St Cassian in devotional format
Fr Jerome Bertram's translation of Cassian's De institutis is irreproachable. The book itself is well-presented and ideal for devotional reading, being compact, unlittered with commentary and even including a bookmark -- which is actually a curious thing, since the Conferences would have been better suited for this purpose. In any event, the book was published in a series that is designed to make important works of Christian spirituality available to a wide audience. It fills this role admirably. But scholars who are interested in the Institutes for whatever reason will likely find it disappointing that there are very few references to related early Christian material, or indeed to contemporary secondary literature.

The Mystery of the Gingerbread House
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (1969)
Author: Wylly Folk St. John
Amazon base price: $3.95
Average review score:

Interesting but a bit dated
I found this book at a garage sale and thought the title seemed interesting. The storyline is surprisingly good and the novel deals with modern day problems such as wife beating, preoccupied parents and handicapped children (one of the main characters wears leg braces and suffered through polio). The book makes many interesting references to Atlanta and even discusses April 26th which is the Confederate Memorial Day. One note of caution is that some of the minor African-American characters are depicted speaking in the stereotypical Black dialect and are shown to be believers in voodoo or maids. However, since this book was written in 1969, the reader should expect some dated ideas and caricatures.
