The definitive text on the definitive American guitar
Richard Smith's book is simply the best available on Rickenbacker guitars. The Rickenbacker story is presented directly and simply. Of course there are lots of insanely cool pictures of Rickenbacker guitars. An invaluable source of information for the collector, or for the normal guitarist, a great book to just plain read. I gave this four stars instead of five because of the spelling errors that reoccur throughout the book. As opposed to the Bacon/Day Rick book, this is not just a quick gloss of the company's models but an indepth look at the company. I hope Smith updates this book every so often. As it stands it is the best reference on this subject in its field.

Please update this awesome book!
This is a great book that needs to be brought up to date. There are a lot of Rickenbacker guitar changes, deletions, and additions that have occurred since 1992.

A great and professional book !!
This book is a great help to all the people who love the Rickenbacker music instruments. In this book you can find informations and details about the history, the people behind this industry, a great selections and lots of pictures and info about almost all the models on guitars, bass, steels, etc, etc. Also you can know about the greatest musicians playing Ricky's since 1920 to the present. If you own a Rickenbacker this is your book. Congratulations to Richard R. Smith for this excellent work !!

Strategic Six Sigma: Best Practices from the Executive Suite
Published in Digital by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ()
Authors: Dick Smith, Jerry Blakeslee, and Richard Koonce
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Excellent Six Sigma Leadership Book!
Well written from the strategic view of Six Sigma and where it fits into your existing corporate methodologies, process efforts and strategic initiatives. The center chapters of the book (3 through 5) are extremely rich in content. The PriceWaterhouse pedigree is obvious in the writing style and view point. Well done!

Steeped in practical examples and avoids statistical jargon
A lot of the Six Sigma books and articles I have read appear to assume you greatly miss your college statistics class. This book focuses on issues, ideas and examples relevant to senior management, while referencing some of the tools and techniques that will be essential to execute successfully. Let's face it -- senior executives need examples to create the sense of urgency and "what can be" through Six Sigma; there are plenty of books, consultants and training firms who can take you from that commitment through execution. I highly recommend this book for managers who want to understand why they should seriously consider Six Sigma or similar approaches (TQM, CQI, etc.) to improve their company's or business unit's effectiveness in meeting their customer's needs and efficiency vs. competitors.

Packed with Knowledge!
Thanks to endorsements from managerial heavyweights like Jack Welch, most people in business are by now familiar with Six Sigma as a process for measuring and reducing product defects. In Strategic Six Sigma, however, Dick Smith, Jerry Blakeslee and Richard Koonce demonstrate that the Six Sigma methodology can and should be applied to the highest levels of strategic planning. Simply put, the authors illustrate how the rigors of Six Sigma can improve your performance in terms of overall strategy, growth and customer satisfaction in the same way that it streamlines operations on a production floor. We...strongly recommend this book to business leaders, executives and managers, all of whom will benefit from its hands-on advice for integrating the tenets of Six Sigma into corporate strategy.

Viva Wheatgrass Viva
For someone who is not inclined to eat well nor look after my health this was a delightful excursion through history, philosophy, african origins and health. She provides a wonderful quick reference to the health aspects of many food besides grasses. This little book, carefully introduces the reader to many aspects of spiritual and physical health.
Wheatgrass: Sperfood for the New-Millenium: drew me into a wonderfully enjoyable reflection on the world beyond the institutional rat race that traps my everyday life.
When i first saw the title i thought it was going to tell me about wheatgrass, but i got far more. Reading Wheatgrass helped me to reflect on a myriad of aspects of my own life and re-engage with some of my own intuitive feelings. It was a deep and meaningful experience
Li Smith has crafted an informative, helpful and friendly introduction to the curative and healthfull properties of grasses and specifically wheatgrass. She provides a wealth of information on a wide variety of topics, woven expertly into a holistic understanding of grasses and their role in our context. The book does this in an accessible manner assisted by the tastefull illustrations by Richard Smith. The illustrations provide a lovely touch with their tongue in cheek or is that banana in deckchair humour.
This is a very enjoyable and helpful book, providing sufficent depth to provide a wholistic understanding of the nature and properties of wheatgrass. It provides very good step by step advice to those looking to improve their life and health. Whether i will take the advice, however, reflects far more on me than the good advice contained within this book. I have already found some of her advice determining my choices already. So who knows. I got far more out of this book than the title would have led me to believe. I therefore think that the subtitle should have intimated the richness of concerns covered by the book, such as the spirituality of the message.
As a researcher myself, I was especially impressed by the extensive research and analysis that had gone into the construction of this book. It is well researched and wholistic understanding of grass in our spiritual/material world. It is a very thorough presentation given without the burdon of dogma, she provides the information in an honest and giving manner and style, its for you the reader to chose. As she puts it so succinctly, "Be guided by your intuition". She provides one with a lot to think about. The kind of nudge we all need every now and then. Thank you Li Smith, i hope i can implement just a little bit of the ideas and good advice. Thanks for the kick.

Wheatgrass, a fresh look at Nutrition and Life
Ostensibly about nutrition and the special properties of wheatgrass, this book manages to transmit an enormous respect and love for life and nature. Writing in an anecdotal style the author's passion, verve and humour bubble out of the pages of this book. Lovely illustrations add to a joyful read packed with great advice.

Power Food
Wheatgrass: Superfood for a New Millennium by Li Smith (Vital Health Publishing) - a small book, big on well-researched, well-illustrated content, refreshingly easy to read. The author takes a comprehensive look at the amazingly regenerative, healing powers of freshly squeezed wheatgrass juice, delving into its history and folk-lore applications through the ages to modern times. Smith tells readers how to grow the grass from scratch (it couldn't be more simple), how to extract the juice correctly to retain all its inherent powerhouse propertes, and how best to use it as an instant super-boost for optimum health.
The book is essential reading for anyone seriously concerned with looking and feeling better, not older, as the years go by. -Marika Sboros, Lifestyle Editor, The Star, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Most comprehensive wildflower book for the Southern Mountain
This is the most comprehensive and inclusive book I have been able to find about the Wildflowers of the Southern Appalachain. It is very helpful in identification but is a little lacking but only slightly in some other informative plant information. It has all of the basics and I love the book to be sure. Needs to add more asides about the plants...etc..what they might have been used for. It definately has been the most helpful book to have around to identify all the flowers. I would not be without it. By far my favorite.

Five stars for numbers of flowers!
With 600 color photos and 1200 species described this is by far the most comprehensive book for identifying flowers of the region. It is a book for the serious who really want to name as many flowers as they can. It may be a bit too comprehensive for a beginner who just wants to find the common flowers because of the sheer quantity .

Excellent book. Most thorough of its kind I have ever seen.
This book is a true tour de force, as Smith draws from his 20,000 photographs and 20 years of experience in the botany of the southern mountains.

Very insightful
I believe this book to be for any woman that has been dumped by a man they loved. It can really pick your spirits up and give you that deserved burst of laughter. I have already given it to two girlfriends in the last month as "Sorry you got Dumped", gifts. They loved it. So I highly recommend it to any woman for that much deserved laughter.

I laughed 'till I cried
All I can say is "why the HELL didn't I think of putting something together like this !" Buy it girls, you will never look at a potential husband (or boyfriend) in the same way again.

Life With Noah: Stories and Adventures of Richard Smith With Noah John Rondeau

Jay has done a great job of revealing the true Noah
Any lover of the Adirondacks, especially of the Northville/Lake Placid trail will have many fond memories re-opened of days spent in beutiful country. In addition, the real Noah is revealed thru the words of a real friend and fellow trapper. You will put this book down with the thought that Noah was not a buffoon to be paraded by the Env. Conservation office. He showed that one could survive in the wild if he had a reverance for life and a love of nature. Richard Smith does honor to Noah . Thanks to Jay for the intimate glimpse of the Hermit of Cold River. Hope to go back there again someday. If I do, I will say a thank you to Noah, Richard and Jay.

A look back into another time and place.
Noah John Rondeau was a special man in a special place at a special time in history. His life and lifestyle were, at the very least, iconoclastic, although he welcomed visitors, as the Mayor of Cold River City, population 1.

Think of it: He never earned a college degree or a patent; never held political or corporate office; never had a telephone or paid any utility bills; never had a credit card or an automobile; never owned any real estate or made any contributions to the arts. Yet here we are, 33 years after his death and nearly 50 years after his departure from the wilderness as a hermit, writing and reading books about him.

Recently, there was a program given at the Adirondack Museum, by Jay O'Hern, in March of 1999. The place was packed and spanned multiple generations, to witness a one hour plus, slide presentation and talk on The Hermit of Cold River, Noah John Rondeau.

In August of 1999, this reviewer took a 40 mile hike into the Cold River Country of the High Peaks Wilderness in the Adirondaks, to meet the spirit of Noah John head-on, along the Northville-Placid Trail. I walked in his footfalls, slept in his woods and fished in his beloved Cold River for the native brook trout.

The trip was a watershed experience and a rite of passage for any hiker or backpacker. His spirit remains in the High Peaks Wilderness to all who have the inclination to venture there.

Jay O'Hern has, with this book, kept Rondeau "alive" for those who would read these pages. More than that, he has helped keep a special time in history fresh and relavent.

Highly recommended.

An excellent textbook for students in library studies
For those seeking a structural approach to reference and information resources, this textbook will provide a much more useful approach than its competitors. Not without limitations, Bopp and Smith provide an excellent introduction to information services and the nature of those resources which support such services. One great advantage to my mind is the provision of a more complete historical context to the sources than provided by Bill Katz's excellent competing text.

An essential reference for library school
Now in a fully updated and expanded third edition, Reference And Information Services offers detailed discussion on a wide range of reference-related services including interlibrary loan, document delivery, access to networked electronic resources, readers' advisory services, and more. Of special interest on the chapters regarding the Internet and World Wide Web, the attention to ethical issues and the strong focus on user-centered services, both face-to-face and those mediated by technology. Reference And Information Services is an essential reference for library school and professional library reference collections, as well as in-service library training supplement reading resource lists.

If you like Xena, why not try Red Sonja?
Red Sonja, like the more famous Xena, is a female warrior who travels the world in search of adventure. This character made her first appearence as a supporting player in the Conan the Barbarian comics. She quickly made the grade and was spun off into her own comics, and then a novel series, this being the first of said series. In this novel, Red Sonja joins good King Olin on his quest to destroy the evil sorcerer(is there any other kind?)who destroyed his city. To kill the sorcerer, they must first possess the fabled ring of Ikribu. While on their quest, they are confronted with zombies, black magic, and traitors. All of this is standard fare in sword and sorcery stories, but, it's alot of fun to see the lead character being a strong intelligent female as opposed to the usual muscular clod. As an extra bonus, readers are treated to a truley gorgeous cover courtesy of renowned fantasy artist Borris. The only problem readers will have is finding a copy of this book. It is long out of print and may not be available in local used bookstores or libraries. However, if you go to the trouble of finding a copy, you won't be disappointed.

A bold, new, FEMALE warrior is upon us!
This is a refreshing book for those who are tired of the same old cliche' in fantasy novels ( strong muscle bound oaf takes on the world). It centers on a beautiful, flame tressed woman who happens to be intelligent( heaven forbid!) She is one Red Sonja and she is fantastic reading. Check this out, you won't be dissapointed.

Authoritative, yes
It is true. This book is THE authority when it comes to games of skill or chance, and even games that combine the two (like all games that mean anything to anyone). But this book is too authoritative, almost facistic in its clinging to the rules of each and every game. All games need to grow and expand (or contract) from their traditional settings. This philosophy is not, I suppose by definition, a part of this book. Otherwise ... yes, a perfect book. Of its type.

Hoyle rules the game
Sure you've been there the fight over how to play a particular game, or better yet the boredom on a rainy day when you've played all the Old Maid you can stomach. Whether you are looking to end a game of poker without bloodshed or want new ways to use that deck of cards Hoyle is the answer. Before you while away another boring day get cracking and secure a copy of Hoyle's latest.

Terrific Tome for Card and Board Games
More lurid books have I read,
but that goes better unsaid.
But still, just the same,
these rules of the game
is complete from alpha to zed.

Stop arguments with your family. Checkers really does have rules. Learn if you must jump the other guy, if you must move the piece you touch, and precisely when a red queen can be placed on a black king.

No one who plays games should be without "The New Complete Hoyle Revised." It was great 300 years ago (so I'm told) and is
great now.

Stars from beyond
I did enjoy this book and am glad I purchased it. It has been well researched and a lot of thought has gone into the text, although there are a few glaring omissions.

The girls sing the greatest
This book is so readable and so filled with anecdotes and facts about the girl singers, the best of all time, those who sang with big bands and on recordings. There is everyone from Doris Day to Patti Page, even Teresa Brewer. An easy read too. All the girls were the best of the era. There is even Diana Krall that Grudens picks up on as a future best, and it has come true. He knows about all of them, mostly through personal interviews. The photos are simply wonderful. if you want to read about your favorites, Helen Forrest, Rosemary Clooney, Jo Stafford, Lynn Roberts, Connie Haines, and Lena Horne, get this book. There is also a tribute to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. The book is worth the price and is a timeless book for your collection.

Another great Big Band singer's book
The stories about the girl singers are so rarely written about. Interviews with Doris Day, Kitty Kallen, Rosemary Clooney, Jo Stafford, Teresa Brewer, Lynn Roberts, Diana Krall, Helen O'Connell, Connie Haines ( the best of them all) Helen Forrest, Peggy Lee and others are simply wonderful. I feel I now know them all. And the tribute to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald is beautiful. There's even a nice story about Josephine Baker that I loved. Five stars for sure.
