Creatively Fantastivically Brilliant!
I was thrilled to see a book offered that prompts children to interpret, understand and then illustrate their interpretations of the lessons taught in this book. As a teacher, I find that most children's books attempt to dazzle the eyes and do not demand a great deal in terms of creativity. In this book, however, the children are given initial prompts to help them shape thier ideas about feelings, but are then given the space to draw and experiment which allows them to reinforce and reinvent further variations on a theme. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing a different and more individual approach to learning about feelings...top on my list!

A valuable addition to any primary care physician's library
Very nicely written and organized book that accomplishes it's editorial goal...that is to encapsulate brief interventional therapy and integrate it into the delivery of every-day primary care. From traditional affective disorders such as depression and anxiety, to end of life issues and nursing home care, this book addresses the mental health issues that are interwoven into the majority of patient interactions. The authors make a compelling case that the family physician, or any primary care provider, is uniquely positioned to intervene early in the course of adjustment disorders, and that many mental health disorders are much easier to treat when addressed in the acute phase. Written in clear, concise style, each chapters can be reviewed in 10 minutes or less, and outlines are provided at the beginning of each chapter so that the clinician can reference them on the fly. Highly recommended.

The Catholic Church and Democracy in Chile and Peru

Thumbs up for Smith and Fleet!
The authors of the book reviews the role of Catholic Church in two prominent Latin American countries: Brian Smith wrote about the church in Chile and Michael Fleet wrote about the church in Peru. They outlined the roles that the Church have played in these countries in their history and argued that over the past 30 years the Catholic church have shifted its focus from siding with the country's power elite to the poor and the disadvantaged inside the country, although this shifts came with strong opposition both from Rome and often from the leaders of the church inside the country. Smith and Fleet also reviewed future challenges for the church in these contries, ranging from future relationship of the local church with Rome, challenges from the political elite and the growing Protestant movements inside the two countries, and conflicts on social issues such as birth control, abortion, and ordination of women as priests. I think the authors have done excellent jobs in arguing their case in this book. The issues they discussed in this book is relevant not only in Chile and Peru, but also anywhere in the world in which the Catholic Church has to deal with many difficult factors such as proper relations with the state and with Rome, and challenges to its authority from other faiths. My praise go especially to Dr. Smith, Ripon College's professor of religion and one of the best professor I ever had in Ripon College. He does not afraid to speak his mind and his thoughts in the book are always provocative but interesting, just like what he always does in his lectures. Dr Smith really does his own way in interpreting the Church's teachings, although he remains totally committed to the basic ideas of Catholic faith.

Cerebral Palsy: The Child and Young Person (Management of Disability)

Expensive, but worth it
This book, written in England, provides an outstanding description of the development of children and teenagers with cerebral palsy. The authors described the emotional, neurological, social, and motor control issues in a very clear and succinct way. I found this book to be more helpful in explaning developmental issues than several American reference books which are much longer than this book. I especially liked the description of the importance of play for young children.

Also good was the clear recognition that society unfairly puts the burden on individuals with disabilities to adjust to non-disabled norms, rather than making the adjustments necessary to fully integrate disabled people. For example, how many times do restaurant and hotel owners complain that it is "too expensive" to make their buildings accessible?

Well worth the money.

Extremely interesting documents from CIA and FBI on Che.
A great book documenting how the US spied on Che and what the CIA and FBI thought about him, Cuba and Latin America. Of all the recent books on Che this is the only one to reproduce authentic documents reflecting contemporaneous material. We could not put it down.

Just can't forget it
I think this is one of the best futuristic books ever writen, because it is so "realistic". Although it's a litle violent, it has certain "details" that describe so well what our society will probably be. The inoperancy of the police force, the power and the futility of High Society, the horror of poverty and the perversity of common crime is so well told that we actually believe that Michael Marshall Smith went in some kind of time journey and saw the future. I recommend this book to anyone with taste for adventure, science and thriller... believe this book will get into your head.

A Julia Child for English cooking
This book is, as he says in his introduction, a 'cookery book' not just a collection of recipes. There is a strong French influence, but the author is committed to English cuisine. Many anecdotes and a lot of technique surround the recipes, which range from simple to complex, and very traditional (English custard, Yorkshire pudding, sausages) to more unusual (melon/pear/cucumber salad, casseroled duck with Madeira and apricots). Sections on wine and ingredients are included. There is a whole chapter on the menu for his daughter's wedding (including the cake!) and others for parties and Christmas food. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to cook and who takes a real interest in cooking techniques.

A great Omnibus for a great series!
"Infection" by John Gregory Betancourt

The Enterprise is called to Archaria III, a planet jointly colonized by humans and Peladians. A new disease has cropped up and is only treatable (the double helix), in a temporary fashion. The Enterprise supposed to deliver the drug, quarantine the planet and see what help they might render. What follows is an excellent story, primarily using Dr. Crusher in her quest to find the cure. The author set everything up very well and wrapped up his portion beautifully.

"Vectors" by Dean Wesley Smith & Kristin Kathryn Rusch

Finally we have a story using Dr. Pulaski, who was unceremoniously dumped from the show. Not that she was anywhere near a replacement for Dr. Crusher. It is particularly interesting to see "Terok Nor" during the occupation and have the interaction with Gul Dukat. I felt the character development was very good and the Ferengi portions were written very well. The only true complaint is that the author's seemed to have done a poor job of closing out Kira's story.

"Red Sector" by Diane Carey

Red Sector is a fantastic story. It's very refreshing having a book that concentrates almost primarily on a non main character in John Eric Stiles. The character is extremely well thought out and written. The author nailed Spock and a hundred and thirty something Dr. McCoy perfectly. I'm dying to find out who the voice is at this point. Hopefully the next three in the Double Helix series will be as good as this one and the other two were.

"Quarantine" by John Vornholt

John Vornholt kicks out another fantastic story. Quarantine gives us a good idea of how "Tom Riker" ends up joining the Maquis. As is par for the course with John Vornholt, he goes into great detail describing a beautiful planet and all of its surroundings. Not a lot of Trek authors do that. I thought Torres seemed a little soft, considering her personality, but that can be explained away.

"Double or Nothing" By Peter David

This is another great installment to the New Frontier and the Double Helix series. Not having read the last of the Double Helix books yet, it seems that this one pretty much finishes the Double Helix storyline???? A favorite quote from the book, Riker - "I've got to get off this ship." Peter David did an excellent job of integrating Picard and Riker into the New Frontier. It's really interesting and well done how he brought Riker and Shelby together again. That portion was done very well and even better than I'd expected in another meeting of those two.

"The First Virtue" by Michael Jan Friedman & Christie Golden

The First Virtue is an excellent conclusion. It pretty much wraps up the reasoning to everything we learned in "Double or Nothing." In the First Virtue, we learn why Gerrid Thul wanted to create the Double Helix virus and why he wanted so much revenge for the loss of his only child. Both authors did a great job with their portions. The plot is well thought out, especially the portions of the book with Commander Jack Crusher and Lieutenant Tuvok. I felt that they captured Tuvok's personality quite well and gave a precursor to some of the decisions and general personality we saw on screen in Voyager.

Overall, I would recommend this Omnibus to any fan of good Star Trek fiction.
