Boo! (My First Reader)

A surprise enjoyment for my boys!!
While I would not have selected this book on my own, my twin sons have made it one of our favorites. The words used in this book are easy for children to recognize, making this an excellent first book in the process of learning to read. The book's semi-scary pictures capture the imagination of children who are just at the age when Halloween, costumes, and Scooby-Doo are favorites. Luckily, the book is not scary enough to cause nightmares. It also opens opportunities to discuss feelings of fear, care for others' feelings, and what really lies behind the costume.

From Aaron's Rod to Zwieback...
...you will not be able to put this book down. Well, if you do, it's okay because you can open it up on any page and enjoy it. It is for those who love books, writing, history and it is for those who have that whimsical curiosity about the language and our use of certian words. Akin to the great New York Times columnist's William Safire etiological On Language column, this is just as fun and at times just as whimsical and quirky. These are, as if you did not know by now, the definitions and origins of popular phrases, well worn cliches and colorful words by one of the worlds foremost translators of classic works and epic poetry, John Ciardi.

If you will indulge me a bit...it has everything including The
Kitchen Sink. Dig? In it, you can;

*Finally know what "You've got it all catwampus" really means.

*Learn that the longest palindromic word according to Webster
may well be "kinnikinnik", which is some kind of smoker's potpourri.

*Finally decipher stuff like when some politician spews "Nattering Nabobs of Negativity" or "Depends on what your definition of 'is' is" and know what the heck they are talking about.

*Know where "caught between Syclla and Charybdis" really is, who does the "Garrison Finish", and why "put the kibosh on" may be from Dickens era London streets.

It is right up my alley. I mean I am punch drunk with glee. And I'm not trying to be a Monday Morning quarterback, either. I love this book. This is Vol 1 of a series and I can't wait to get my hands on the later volumns. You are gonna dig the heck outta this!

Button Man: The Killing Game
Published in Paperback by Kitchen Sink Press (1995)

`You're A Cold Fish, Harry.'
This is the story of a former mercenary named Harry Exton who is recruited by an old compadre into a `game' in which soldiers of fortune are sponsored by wealthy investors (called Voices, because they're only heard on the telephone) to fight it out gladiatorial style in a variety of settings, from the nighted English countryside, to an abandoned tenement, to the very streets of London. There's a lot of `dosh' to be made, but Harry doesn't like being boxed in. After a particularly deadly game, on a whim to test his Voice, he wonders aloud what would happen if he were to up and quit. That's enough for the Voices, and in the very next game Harry is set up for the kill. But Harry X is a lot more resourceful than they think...

This is a great thriller which is bookended by a wounded Harry telling his incredible story to the doctor treating him. While the concept sounds like Hard Target, forget that bit of fluff. This is an extremely well crafted bit of British noir. The action is completely believable (if surpassingly violent at times). There are no slow mo two gun jumps from the fireball here. This is hard hitting, driven plotboiler with a lace of cool. The characters are as hard boiled as they come, and the story culminates in a classic twist.

The art here is gritty and realistic - perfectly married to the writing. And is it just me or does Harry look a great deal like Sean Bean?

Buy this if you can get it - it delivers.

Delightful
What's better than a Hank the Cowdog book? Listening to theaudio cassettes, of course! The author himself does all the voices, and as usual, he brings the characters to life. In this adventure, Hank, Drover and Little Alfred must track and save Eddie the Raccoon from mysterious black-hooded hangmans in a haunted house. And if that isn't enough adventure for one day, Hank then has to save everyone from the neighbor's bull. Sure to please children of all ages and their parents, too.

A Jigsaw Jones Mystery, The Case of the Secret Valentine
This was one of the first Jigsaw Jones books I read to my children. It hooked us and I've now read the eight in the series so far.The books are short enough to keep the kids interested.James Preller has the nack of putting the right ingredients in the books to make my children laugh, things that happen in every 4 to 8 year olds life. We've practiced the different secret codes that Jigsaw and his best friend Mila come up with. Also we learned abit about Abraham Lincoln even though we are Canadians living in England. The Jigsaw Jones books are well travelled and luckily I can get them through Amazon in the U.K., So I guess this is really a review of the series and not necessarily one book. They are nice reading before bed and my children are always ready to listen to the Jigsaw Jones books. A delightful peek into a child's imagination
An enchanting look at what goes on in a young girl's imagination during a perfectly ordinary trip to the beach with her parents. The story is in the pictures rather than in the text, which puts the young readers in charge of the story. A delightful book!
