Great anthology
This book contains excellent choices from the writings of Jonathan Edwards, the first great philosopher in the American colonies, including some of his earliest writings, mostly just philosophical or biological musings. It reflects some interesting developments in the maturation of his thinking. It also has letters to friends, colleagues, and family members. Some of his most well-known sermons are alongside some representative samples of his sermons. Unfortunately, there is room for only excerpts from his longer works, such as The Religious Affections, but that can't be helped in an affordable popular anthology. If you want all of his works, but the complete works from the same publisher. If you just want a representative sample of some of the best works of this great theologian and philosopher, get this.

A nice blend of Kilimanjaro history, facts and photographs.
John Reader does a good job of combining historical, contemporary and naturalist perspectives in a sometimes comical summary of his photographic experience on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Not being a mountaneer, his story includes many amusing anecdotes that anyone who has climbed the moutain can relate to. And although not the strongest point, the photographs add just the right amount of tangibility and perspective to elicit fond memories from those that have already climbed it, or a strong desire in those that are thinking about it.

Another great Littles Book
This is another great Littles" book. However, the buyer should beware that it is simply an abridged and illustrated version of "the Littles to the Rescue." If your child is too young for chapter books, this would be a great starter that will make the transition to the chapter Littles books easier. In our case we had already read The Littles to the Rescue" chapter book, so this was a little disappointing. The page ought to point out its relationship to to the original.

By the way, "the Littles Go Around the World" is a similar treatment of "The Littles Go To School." Just so you know!

Liked how Eddie was always trying to be the big shot.
My name is Leigh. I liked that Eddie tried to be always a smart aleck. And how he said that he would prove that Mrs. Waterford wasn't a mermaid. And whenever they got in the lake, Eddie would try to splash her. And I liked when Eddie pulled Liza in the water.

Friends Forever....
"Mouse and Mole were the best of friends. They had fun together. They shared everything. They trusted each other completely, even with their deepest secrets. When one was sad or not feeling well, the other was always there to comfort him. That's how much they loved each other..." All was perfect, until the night they saw the falling star shoot across the sky. Then jealousy and suspicion raised its ugly head as the two good friends began to squabble over who the star belonged to, who saw it first, who would find it, and whose wish would come true. "The days rolled by, and summer was nearly over..." Mouse and Mole were sad and lonely. They missed each other and all the good times they had together..... A.H. Benjamin's gentle text is complemented by John Bendall-Brunello's charming and engaging illustrations, and together word and art send a simple message about the importance of friendship that won't be lost on even the youngest readers. With a clever, satisfying, happily-ever-after ending to set everything right again, Mouse, Mole, And The Falling Star is a sweet and heartwarming preschool crowd pleaser.

A good literary study of John's Gospel
Its a pretty recent trend to approach the Bible with the same techniques as approaching literature, so biblical narrative criticism is still in it's early stages. This book is a step forward, picking up some ideas from Culpepper's Anatomy of the 4th Gospel and running with them.

Starting with a discussion on narratology, Staley gives a clear definition of Real Author/Reader, Implied Author/Reader and Narrator/Narratee. He then goes on to discuss the techniques that the (implied) writer of John employs in drawing the (implied) reader into the text. Just as the narrator's purpose is to bring the reader into faith (20.30-31), the implied author also uses literary techniques to this same end.

I'm a fan of this book. His argument is clear and reasonable, and his style is not convuluted as some biblical scholars can be.
Staley seems to have a good grasp of both literary theory and Johannine scholarship. He seems well read and includes an extensive bibliography.

Great book but i wanted more depth
this was truely a great book and i enjoyed reading it, however i desired more interpretation on "the secret sayings of the living Jesus." i thought the authors would elaborate in depth the sayings they've discovered, but rather they were just presented. I'd recommend buying the book, that is for sure, but you should research the gospel of Thomas deeply before you undertake the reading.

Ecumenical responses to the Pope
What is most remarkable in this collection, is the widespread respect for Pope John Paul II, his intellectualism, and basic agreements with many of his ideas. This collection, continues his effort at ecumenism by bringing together 15 Protestant and 1 Jewish writer, and each sheds new light on the Papal volume. Perhaps due to the ecumenical goal, there is less discussion of differences of faith, which also would have proved useful, such as Phyllis Tickles discussion of Catholic beliefs of purgatory. Particularly moving for me was Rabbi's Eckstein's, Jewish response, first about the history of Church-afflicted spirit, and more recently, the positive changes led by John XXIII and this Pope. Flora Wuellners commentary of prayer, proved enlightening to me in terms of the transformative power of prayer, not as a means of begging for something, but as a means of avoiding fleeing from God. Both this book and the book by John Paul II, discuss fundamental questions of faith, evil and suffering, and may help to deepen your own understanding of Christianity, whether Catholic or Protestant.
