Easy to use reference guide
I purchased this guide to help me select mystery books as gifts for Christmas, and what a help it was! Not only is it so simple to use, but it recommends the top authors in all the different kinds of mysteries, such as cozies, technothrillers, historicals, noir, etc. It also gives a lot of valuable information on mystery awards, organizations, and websites. Definitely worth the $30.00 I spent!

A Great Beginning for a Beginning Reader!
My daughter, while barely four, devours books. We've been working on phonics and found the basic level of this beginning reader wonderful. She was reading it back to her Father the same night! The author repeats words throughout the book making words easier to identify for young readers. Truth be told, it was the illustrations with their brilliant colors that first captured my daughters attention. The frog experiences a range of emotions that open doors for conversation about how she might have felt in the same situation. Even as an adult, I enjoyed the book and the feeling of watching your child develop a new skill is priceless.

Fun Romp for Young Readers
My daughter is just learning to read, so she can manage only the simplest text when reading a book herself. However, she still wants a good story that will hold her interest. "Nine Men Chase a Hen" was the perfect combination of silliness and simplicty for her to both manage the book on her own and to enjoy the aburd text and illustrations.
No Howling in the House (Step into Reading)

Wonderful!
My 5 year old son is interested on bats, vampires and other little critters & monsters. However, I couldn't find any book on this subject that was appropriate for his age. I'm so glad I came across Mercer Mayer's collection. I have read Little Critter in the past and have found it amusing and helpful. However, Critters of the Night is much more appealing to my kid. The characters and illustrations are very expressive and colorful. The text is clear, easy and fun to read. It's very rhythmic. He's learning to read now, but I always take him a step further. The Critters of the Night collection is helping me on this endeavor. We love it!
Oxford Reader's Companion to George Eliot
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (2001)
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:
A must-have for George Eliot fans!
This is a thorough, well-organized compendium of all aspects of George Eliot's works, their reception, publishing history, etc. If you are reading Felix Holt, you'll find everything you need to know about the Reform Bill of 1832. Other entries, such as "Moral Values" and "Romanticism" are brief but well-written and can deepen the perspective as you read. Each of the novels has a dedicated entry describing the plot with interpretive aids. A very valuable resource.

The Pql Reader

PQL Reader Highlights New Canadian Literature
The Porcupine's Quill Reader contains selection of short stories by authors recently published by the Porcupine's Quill Press, a small literary publisher in Erin, Ontario, Canada. In addition to some great stories by writers such as Keath Fraser, Steven Heighton, Caroline Adderson, Russell Smith and Hugh Hood, there are some extremely interesting, albeit idiosyncratic, observations about running a small literary press by the publisher, Tim Inkster. There are also some great (if small) photos of author readings around the country and strange goings-on at the press. It really made me feel like I had been invited to a really great party full of fascinating writers, and it's a great introduction for people who want to know what's good to read in (English) Canada these days.
Precious Bane (Heinemann Guided Readers)
Published in Paperback by Delta Systems Co (1995)
Amazon base price: $4.81
Average review score:
Marvelous book
Precious Bane is an incredibly rich, lovely story, told in a manner that seems almost faerie-like, though incisively real in its depiction of human nature. It's about a young woman born with a hare-lip in 19th-century rural England, and how she comes to win (and be won by) the fine young man who is the desire of her heart.
It's a great book for teens because, among other elements in its complex theme, it is concerned with true feminine beauty, which is resides in purity and virtue.
The story is moving, and lingers long after the book is through. Definitely one you'll keep in your mind's collection.

perfect for learning
This is perfect for children (or adults!) learning french. It uses repeatition and variation to teach several different simple sentence structures and useful vocabluary words. Cute pictures.
I thought the explainations on how to pronounce the words was great as I could comprehend what it was instructing. Certainly, it gets the beginning pupil close enough!
