Only So-So
Yeah, so I read "Mara Daughter of the Nile" and LOVED it. Naturally I ran to the library to find all of the Eloise McGraw books possible. I stumbled upon this book. "Mara" was a lot ot live up to and this novel fell sort. Yeah, it was beleivable and the charactors were good. The history part was good too. But where is the suspense, the intrigue? Juliana found here nitch in life while embodering the tapestry, but when it was over, then what was she to do. Here problems weren't really solvered. Her life was not yet stable. Truley the end was unsatasfactory. And now we come to one of the biggest problems it just seemed more juevenile then the previous books. So, I'm going to try the next McGraw novel in hopes that it lives up to my expectations. Will the Golden Goblet be Satisfactory? One never knows.

Good job!
This is a children's book, but I'm 25 and I still enjoyed it. I wish that there had been a little bit more about King Harold and Duke William, but the story is still a gripping one, set in that all-important year of 1066.

Great book
I read this 229 page novel for my Honors 9 Geography 5 themes project. This book is based on a 1066 period of time that happened in various places around England. The Normans took over parts of England and destroyed a lot of the people's lives and really effected their economy. One brave, strong girl by the name of Juliana travels from heart-braking place to another in search of something her heart desisres. She finds out what it is in the end while going through loss of family, hard work, devistating sights, and adventures you won't forget. I like how the author uses very good literary devices to get you "involved" with the book. There were nights where I just didn't want to put the book down because it was really exciting. One thing I thought was difficult about this book was, the word choices McGraw chose. A lot of the words were advanced so I would not reccomend this book for a real young person. I am in grade 9 and had somewhat hard time understanding it at times. But what was really helpful was McGraw put a glossary in the back of the book which helped A LOT. I had never known that such a devistating thing took place over in England and by reading this book it helped me understand the hardness that the people went through. There were a few parts that were a little grusome, but not too bad for a book that deals with war. I would strongly reccomend this book to people who are interested in the history of England, or just want a good novel to sit and cuddle up with. But if you read this book you need to understand that it is not just a relaxation book; it is about an awful war that took place.

Lovely and gentle
My daughter has requested this book over and over again from the library, so much so, I just bought a used copy! We love the last page and she can recite the text by heart. She is 2 1/2 and we've been reading this book for the last year.

A Rare Gem
My daughter is now 9 months old and this has been one of her favorites since birth. She is definately a "daddy's girl" and it's wonderful to read about the relationship between a child and their father. I wish there was a "My Mommy and I" book in this series, but I guess I'll just have to let the two of them have their moment (smile).

Review by J. Lockhart from Anthropological Linguistics, 1996
"The Nahuatl expression "chipping away on earth" refers to the way long-sustained activity can develop skills and achieve great things. It makes an appropriate title for a volume commemorating the translators of the Nahuatl texts of fray Bernardino de SahagĂșn's sixteenth-century Florentine Codex or General History of the Things of New Spain. Anderson and Dibble's multi-volume publication is the largest philological undertaking seen in the realm of indigenous languages of the New World in modern times, and upward of three decades passed between its first inception and its completion. When these two anthropologists began their entreprise in the late 1940s, they met with little understanding or encouragement from fellow practitioners of their discipline. Ethnohistory barely existed, and indeed it could not flourish until some of the basic texts necessary for its practice were available and understood. In the decades that have followed, New World ethnohistory has gained great momentum, partly as a result of Anderson and Dibble's efforts, and their philology has drawn the admiring attention also of historians literary scholars, and art historians. Among this large audience, their feats are legendary.

The volume comprises twenty-seven pieces (plus two introductory essays), by as many authors, divided into five sections. In the first, Anderson, Dibble, and Norma Mikkelson, who was closely involved at University of Utha Press, reminisce on various stages of the Florentine Codex project. The following sections are devoted to: aspects of the work of SahagĂșn; Mesoamerican philology beyond SahagĂșn; various substantive aspects of Nahua cultural history before and after the conquest; and some facets of the history of the Nahua subregion of Tetzcoco....

....A collection of this type, when it is as well done as the present one, and represents as good a cross-section of authors as this one does, can serve as an introduction to the field for the nonspecialist, or even as a way of keeping current for the specialized scholar. It also represents an opportunity to discuss the field's evolution...."

Whimsical, a pleasure for adults too
Eloise Elephant and Agnes Mouse are best of friends. They do everything together. One day after skating Agnes invites Eloise home to tea. Agnes tells Eloise "today is a special day, it's my birthday." Eloise had completely forgotten. She jumps up and rushes off to buy Agnes a present. She looks at all the beautiful things in the shops and muses about how Agnes would enjoy a number of presents. She finally settles on the biggest cookie she can find. But just as she arrives back at Agnes house she falls over and its breaks into a hundred pieces.

For a toddler just learning to speak this is a delightful book. The story is wonderfully whimsical (making it a pleasure to read over and over) and there's lots of things for your child to name. "Kite", "necklace", and "bridge".

My daughter particularly loves this book because her she loves mice and elephants, she loves cookies, she's fascinated by the scene where the cookie gets "broken" and then of course there's the necklace and she now must wear one every day.

This book is also a perfect size for a child hands (and easy to hold up when your reading it in bed). I'm back on line to get the rest of this series.

A Book I've Never Forgotten
When I was a young child, my mother gave me the first issue of this book. Now that I am a mother, I have been on a constant search for the same book for my daughter. When I found this book, I was overjoyed! Not only does it have simple prayers that are easy for children to memorize, it also has prayers for various religions, which exposes children to the divesity of religion. This is an excellent book that will lead young children on the path to righteousness in a fun and simple way.

Molly, the new lighthouse Dog! Great Kids picture book.
If anyone has ever read, NELLIE, THE LIGHTHOUSE DOG, you'll be equally thrilled with GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY, the story of a sweet pup who adds some fun and excitement to the towns 4th of July parade. The illustrations are wonderful, sure to make it a classic and could be sold as prints. My family had the pleasure of meeting Miss Molly herself (along with the gracious author) at the famous Marshall Point Lighthouse at Port Clyde Maine (Forrest Gump ended here on his long run). Kids and adults who like dogs will love it.

Great botanical resource
A great book useful to the general public on these unique and beautiful natural communities. Photographs are excellent for identification. I would like more descriptive information, but a great starting place for anyone who would like to learn more about these often abused and under-appreciated areas. Anyone who surveys for endangered and threatened species in the southeastern U.S. should have one.

Review by K. A. Dixon, from Choice, 1995
"This important collection of 15 papers originated as a symposium on the "Mexica Puebla concept," a distinctive "stylistic/iconographic tradition" in the late prehistoric period of Central Mexico (mainly post-CE 1200). The term refers to a complex of traits that seems to have centered in the states of Puebla and western Oaxaca and spread widely, even as far as Costa Rica; the famous Aztec style in the Valley of Mexico was a related variation. Most of the papers analyze the best-known aspects of the tradition: distinctive painted iconography on highly decorated polychrome pottery, screen-fold books (codices), and wall murals. Emphasis is on the results of recent fieldwork that updates understanding of the Mixteca-Puebla manifestations in different local regions, allowing further interpretations of pre-Hispanic culture history and culture processes....

....An important addition for Mesoamerican collections, of lasting value."
