Jane Austen's Christmas: The Festive Season in Georgian England
Published in Paperback by Sutton Publishing (1997)
Authors: Maria Hubert and Maria Hubert Von Staufer
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Great historical content
This is a terrific accounting of the Christmas season in Georgian England, gleaned from many original sources, including ones directly from Austen herself. Be aware that this book does mostly refer to the middle class and their celebrations and cannot neccesarily be attributed to upper class or lower class life. But if you are doing research for a book or just reading about this incredible era for fun, this is a good starting point and will entertain as well as inform.

Interesting Look at Christmas in Georgian Times
Jane Austen's Christmas provides detailed insight into the Christmas celebrations of Austen's day. Passages from her books, diaries and letters from her own family, and journals and pieces from other writers are compiled together to give the reader a historical (rather than literary) perspective of the Christmas holiday. My one disappointment with the book was that all the pieces by Austen herself were excerpts from her novels, all of which I'd read already; but overall, it's a good book for Austen enthusiasts wanting to know more about the traditions of her day.

Social Statistics
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (01 January, 1979)
Author: Hubert M. Blalock
Amazon base price: $115.05
Average review score:

Doesn't do it for me
This book is a text book in my current statistics class. I am not too familiar with alternate text books on the subject, but I do not find his explanations to be clear enough to be helpful on their own. He assumes a level of sophistication about mathematics that this reader does not have. If your math background is excellent, you will do well. If not, be forwarned.

Social Statistician's Source Book
This is a heavy-going textbook used for graduate level social scientists. Certainly not for casual reading, (except for a possible cure for chronic insomia). But the definitive text and reference for descriptive statistics of populations. Excellent for the serious student, an absolute must for the professional in probability practice.

Spirit of Penance, Path to God: How Acts of Penance Will Make Your Life Holier and Your Days Happier
Published in Paperback by Sophia Inst Pr (1998)
Author: Hubert van Zeller
Amazon base price: $10.36
List price: $12.95 (that's 20% off!)

One perspective on penance.
Van Zeller provides helpful insight and some encouragement to those seeking deeper spirituality. However, I found this book cautiosly written. He attempts to apply a practice of Religious to the leity and tip-toes around some issues in doing so. After reading this book cover-to-cover, I found myself wanting to explore the concept of self-imposed penance further.

Spirit of Pennance
Although Van Zeller wrote Spirit of Pennance in 1958, it is more important now than ever for Christians interested in a genuine and complete spiritual life to read and apply this great work.

Due in no small part to the catastrophic changes wrought on the Catholic Church through the Second Vatican Council, fewer and fewer Catholics practice, or even understand, the many blessings that result from this virtue.

Van Zeller describes how clergy and laity alike can incoporate small acts of pennance into their daily lives, and thus draw much closer to a true imitation on Christ.

The Art of Being Well Informed: What You Need to Know to Gain the Winning Edge in Business
Published in Paperback by Avery Penguin Putnam (1993)
Authors: Andrew P. Garvin, Hubert Bermont, and Robert I. Berkman
Amazon base price: $12.95

One of the things you SHOULD have learned in school...
Some of the particulars in the book are a bit dated, and a few of the examples tend to go on for a bit too long. That being said, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in becoming a better informed person. Mr. Garvin gives sound advice on how to bcom more 'concious' of information and how to find the right 'sort' of infomation you need. He talks authoritatively about the variety of sources available and the usefulness of each type. Despite the minor flaws, this book is worth the cost for bringing the topic together in an easy to understand manner. I'd recommend it to anyone!

Back from Utopia - The Challenge of the Modern Movement
Published in Hardcover by Uitgeverij 010 Publishers (2002)
Authors: Hilde Heynen and Hubert-Jan Henket
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Back from Utopia
A sharp-tongued polemic, Miestakes, from Rem Koolhaas on his proposal for IIT, a revaluation of Chandigarh, and another on fascist architecture in Italy are among the 42 short essays by architects and critics comprising this multi-faceted portrait of modernism-its promise, failures, and potential. Henket co-founded DoCoMoMo to document and save modern buildings world wide, and he's helped create an anthology that's generally lucid, provocative, and free of academic mumbo-jumbo. Business Networking: Shaping Collaboration Between Enterprises
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (2001)
Authors: Hubert Osterle, Elgar Fleisch, and Rainer Alt
Amazon base price: $59.95
Average review score:

Good Balance for Business Managers and Academics/Students
Osterle, Fleisch, and Alt's have crafted a comprehensive study about how enterprises can achieve "networkability" in their book, "Business Networking". The concept of "networkability" or the ability to establish efficient business relationships among internal and external resources is explored in four parts through the use of case studies and primary research culled from experiences in "Competence Centers". The highlight of the book for business managers is the section on Key Success Factors for Business Networking Systems - a section that builds upon the first three parts of the book and ties all the key lessons together. Moreover, it is here that the authors conclude that Business Networking relies on sophisticated IT and explains how a critical mass of partners facilitates networkability. Research data contained in the book is appropriately documented and there are plenty of schematics and tables to help solidify key points throughout the text. The book certainly succeeds as an academic text (and it may become required reading in some business school classes), but for more general audiences of business managers, the book plods along in certain sections explaining nuts and bolts - laying the groundwork - necessary to comprehend the key success factors.

Court Life Under the Plantagenets: Reign of Henry the Second
Published in Hardcover by Ayer Co Pub (1977)
Author: Hubert Hall
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Suprising amount of information on the world of Henry 11
This book was written in 1890 but seems suprizingly well informed. It takes as its thread the story of a noble's efforts to get his relatives estate restored to him after the civil war under King Stephen. The desriptions of the operation of the Exchequer ( the forerunner of most of the world's finance ministries) is absorbing and makes you realise not so much has changed other than the tools used to do the job.The story of Henry's hawking expedition where he loses his favourite gerfalcon and returns to the palace in a very bad temper makes me want to watch a display of real hawking. It must have been exciting if bloody. An interesting read
