Worthwhile to those that are interested....
This is a good book, well worth your time and money. The author's primary motivation for writing the book (imho) is to create an educational, inside look at the strip club world, especially attempting to teach readers that the subculture of stripping/dancing is populated by many independent, intelligent, and multi-talented women. I'm not sure that this will be enough of a revelation to keep the average reader fully engrossed in the theme of the book, but if it helps to eliminate a blanket generalization of the dancer as a defective or ignoramus, the book will have succeeded in a literary, if not monetary sense. It's hard to imagine this book becoming a big seller, because the widespread preconceptions about women who dance in the sex industry for money is a immediate turn-off for many. If you take the plunge, though, you'll find a well written book that attempts to examine the motivation of women who choose this line of work, however temporarily. The author is insightful, and explores both the positive and negative aspects of dancing in a fair, objective light.

The main message as a man that I would take from this book is this: Except in the rarest of circumstances, you are being sold an illusion at a rather high price. Dabble in the world of flesh if you must, but examine your own reasons as to why you do so in an entirely non-judgmental, non-moralistic manner. At the end of the day, virtually nothing you will have seen is at all real, and the quest to find otherwise may leave you no wiser and considerably poorer. Dancers can be wonderful therapists and very special people.....but you will never be any closer to them than your wallet allows.....and that is the wistful yet disappointing truth. (And, in the end, on their side of the glass, it is generally no better for them to take your money for a variety of entrapping or mercenary reasons....and ultimately, no more fulfilling.)

Sensual and Intellectual
This book is a fascinating journey into the world of the stripper. Ms. Eaves is a great writer and the sections where she talks about her life are well-written and compelling -- putting to rest any notions that there are no brains behind the naked beauties. When she dives into the lives of the other dancers, things get a little bit off track, but only for a short while.

This book has a lot to teach about the mindset of the stripper; about the sexual politics of stripping; and about how some woman view sex in general; and about how one woman views her body and her boundaries.

Well written page turner
Elisabeth Eaves writes from experience about working in a peep show booth and other jobs related to being a stripper. She was not a victim or forced into this--it was a conscious decision and one she used to her advantage. This book offers insight into the women that she meets and the world of strippers.

A great tribute to I Love Lucy's 50th Anniversary.
I had just started watching I Love Lucy just a few months ago and the first episode I saw swept me and I became a Lucy lover. When I got this book for Christmas, it thrilled me. It contains a biography of each member of the cast, including Little Ricky. It also has behind the scenes of the writers and contains and explains each of the episodes of I Love Lucy and the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show. Some episodes I just can't wait to see! Although the author made some mistakes, I clearly still enjoyed it and I still look at it from time and time again. Thanks Lucy and Desi, for making I Love Lucy great.

Okay
The cooking of Latin American is extremely diverse. Argentina is a large pastoral country and meals are meat based. The Argentines use a range of sauces many highly flavored to complement mea dishes and barbecues. When I have been to Argentina one is struck by how restaurants have huge displays of cooking meat in their windows and vegetables are hard to find.

Mexico on the other hand is a country which has a tradition of subsistence based Agriculture. The cuisine is based on the use of corn meal made into a range of breads such that are then flavored by vegetables cheese and smaller amounts of meat.

Other Latin American Countries have similarly divergent cuisine's. Rather than have the book broken up into the food from various regions the authors use a conventional structure of breaking up the book into soups, salads meat dishes and the like. Each country will then contribute various dishes.

The preparation and flavour types used in the cooking are exotic and outside the tradition of English and American Cooking. That makes the recipes interesting to try and experiment with. All of the recipes are easy to follow and make. The degree of preparation for each dish is also much less complex than say Indian or South East Asian Cooking so that it is a simple book to use.

Worth a look.

Great Cookbook to add to your library...
Lots of wonderful authentic latin recipies. They have all been very intersting and delightful so far. Some of the dishes can be a little complicated to prepare though.

My most delapidated cookbook
_The Book of Latin American Cooking_ is one of my favorite cookbooks. It's full of unique ideas and combinations that you just can't find elsewhere. For example, I was surprised to see how much a pureed corn sauce tasted like it contained dairy.
I would never have thought of making a soup with pureed avocados! A lot of the recipes sound odd but are delicious. A few, admittedly, are just odd.

I was having a look here to see if there might be a hardback edition. My current copy needs to be replaced!

Finally Some Answers
I have exhaused to internet, the bookstores, and the libraries searching for information. Of all the books that I have encountered, this book is the most comprehensive with the most information. I also was able to contact the Doctors directly which I thought was great. They answer questions are are even willing to speak to other doctors. Bottom line... if your're experiencing sexual dysfunction, don't give up ladies. There's hope, and these two women are making it happen!

Lets hear it for the Berman sisters
This is an improved version of the hardcover, which was also amazing. A great resource.

Thank you , Thank You
If it weren't for Drs. Jennifer and Laura Berman, their book and their fantastic show, I'm not sure what I would do. They have helped me soooo much in terms of my relationship, my sexual function, and my life. I owe them my hapiness!! I'm waiting anxiously for book number 2.

Western bias, but fascinating nonetheless
Once I got past the fact that the author was hideously biased toward the whole Western career-woman concept, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found myself enchanted by the tiny details of Japanese family life that appear throughout the book, as well as the overarching story of Mariko's unfolding family dramas over the course of a year. It truly, truly helped me understand Japanese women and culture and resolved many of the things which had always perplexed me. The writing and the depth of the interviews are excellent, as is the author's eye for detail. My one aggravation was the author's Western bias. Despite spending a year with Mariko, she never seemed able to overcome her certainty that Mariko was oppressed, depite Mariko's insistence to the contrary. The misplaced pity she seemed to feel for Mariko was endlessly annoying, and I think that any Western woman who has made her family her "career", like me, will resent the author's careerist attitude. Nevertheless, she is a talented writer with an excellent subject, and the bias doesn't detract too much from the excellent quality of the book.

Window into another lifestyle
This book provides glimpses of the lifestyle of an average Japanese housewife. Written by a journalist rather than an anthropologist, the author explores the life and important events of Mariko over the course of a year. Through the author's interviews, we learn the history of the family and the views of Mariko, her husband and children on such topics as family life, parenting, and work. As a journalist, Bumiller is quite interested in Japanese opinions and attitudes about current events, so Mariko and her family explain some of their complex feelings about the U.S. We visit the children's schools and work places, and see where they go on vacation. Along the way, Bumiller also interviews prominent Japanese who are in some way connected to aspects of Mariko's life, such as politicians, the head of the mob, and a talk show host. By the end of the book, readers are familiar with many details of average Japanese family life, something that would be unattainable unless one were to either grow up in Japan or live for long enough in Japan to develop close friendships with locals. But even Bumiller points out that she has only scratched the surface, and there is much about Mariko's life that we can never comprehend just by reading a book.

Insightful look at Japanese family life and interaction
This book takes a personal look at Mariko, who is a wife, mother, and daughter in modern-day Japan. This book cuts through typical Japan-bashing rhetoric, and provides an intimate look at Japanese family life during a time when familial roles are being challenged and re-defined almost daily. This behind-the-scenes view of family life is one that few non-Japanese get to experience. I particularly enjoyed how the book illustrated the rhythm of Mariko's daily life over a year's time. The book shows how Japanese women have much more freedom of expression and independence than men which is quite contrary to what most westerners believe.

Learning to be woman of God...
The book "Let me be a Woman" by Elisabeth Elliot is a biblical revelation for Christian woman. The author states, very humbly, her convictions which are scripturally correct and completely in-line with the word of God. It exposes the lies woman of the Church have allowed the world fool them with. The book explains how woman are to be submissive first unto God and secondly unto to their husbands.
It is not demeaning towards woman or in any way old-fashioned. Elliot herself is an example of proverbs 31 woman. She is not a weak woman, but rather a strong outspoken Christian woman. She admonishes woman with tenderness and love behind each word.
I cannot recommend a better book for woman who are truly seeking God, and honestly wiling to give him their all.

A Refreshing Reminder Of Woman's Creation & Role
In an age when women, especially women in the church, search, flounder, and grow frustrated with discovering who God created us to be, the role He is requiring of us, and how we are to relate to men, especially our spouses, this book gives direction in a manner neither oppressive nor offensive. Elisabeth Elliot, through loving letters to her daughter, allows us the opportunity to find the heart of our Creator in a way that inspires and plants desire within us. I came away from reading this book with a fresh longing to be all - nothing less and nothing more - than my God designed me to be. I encourage every Christian woman, whether 12 or 99 years of age, to read this book and allow Elisabeth Elliot's knowledge of the Word to shape who you are in Christ.

Buy a copy of this book for your daughter!
By the end of the first chapter in this book I felt like chearing. As a young teenager, this book let me know that it IS okay to be a woman like God designed me to be. Elisabeth Elliot did a wonderful job writing this book - she's funny and serious and gets her point across through both styles of writing. Now I'm in my late teens, have read this book several, several times, and will take it to college with me so that I can continue to read it. I'm so glad that my mom encouraged me to read this. Out of all the books she ever wanted me to read, this one is in the top 5 list of books that have affected my life the most. My daughters will read this when they reach their teen years, and I hope many other mothers will buy this book for their daughters as well. At the close of the book, I wanted to chear "Let Me Be A Woman!" In my early teens, it was so important and such a relief to realize that how I was made was the way GOD wanted me.

Just a waste of money
First of all you need a Magnifieglass just to read the book because its so darn small! The "words of wisdom" are corny.
The only good thing about this book is the pictures.
Spend your money on an other selection.

Before you Buy...
Please make sure you know what you are buying. I was highly disappointed in this tiny book. All it is is sayings (not from the show) accompanied by pictures from I love Lucy. Not worth it, if you want great pictures from the greatest television show buy: "I Love Lucy : The Complete Picture History of the Most Popular TV Show Ever" In my opinion the most complete book about I Love Lucy, but if pictures are all you want buy a Lucy calendar at your local book store.

Nifty Little Book
I dont care what others say, this book is great. Although the sayings are not from I Love Lucy, the sayings are put next to pictures from I Love Lucy and the result is something someone could have easily stated in I Love Lucy when one of these moments occured. Another great thing is the books size, it would easily fit into a pocket or purse and can be taken anywhere. Other Lucy books are bulky, and are sometimes hard to travel with(depends where you are). The only downside is that some people may have trouble reading this, but I have never had the problem myself. So overall buy the book if you want some tips along with Lucy and the gang. Dont buy this if you want only stuff from the show. But trust me, you wont be dissapointed if you do buy this.

Disappointing
Numerous examples and suggestions in the book were not accurate using Excel 97. For a self-paced, self-taught learner, look elsewhere.

Great Book for starters
This is a very good book to begin programming in Excel VBA, but not to end if you will. The book sort of gives you a push and YOU! have to then take the ball and run with it. The book is analogous to how a mother bear chases her cubs away once they are big enough to take care of themselves. The cubs, though with enough skills to survive, are still left with new and open possibilities before them. The reason why is that most of the examples are too easy, making them too unrealistic for the real world. The other is that the book is based on an older Excel version. This book is really great for those people who are scared of programming and want to make the transition, but are not sure of what road to take.

Using Excel VBA
This is the only Visual Basic book I have seen which allows users to program in VB without first learning the intricacies of the language. Which makes this book the only convenient source (that I have found; after repeated trips to book stores and libraries) for anyone who is attempting to make useful programs in Excel. While it was written for Excel 7.0 the applications (amazingly) still work in Excel 2000. I would recomend this book to anyone who works with computers and wishes to save some time by avoiding tedious data entry.

Sorely disappointing....
I had heard a lot about this book on various lesbian websites, about how wonderful and affirming it was. Needless to say I was excited when my girlfriend gave me the book for my birthday. My excitement didn't last through the first twenty pages, however.

Someone else already stated earlier the problems I had with this book: poorly organized writing, too much emphasis on dates and names that aren't important to the story. The author paints the main lesbian characters in the book as sex-crazed women who are merely lesbians because they've been burned by men. She seems to think that a few paragraphs of a graphic sex scene between Aimee and Jaguar is enough to make us swoon at their apparent "love" for each other. I didn't swoon, I rolled my eyes. I am sure Ms. Fischer is a wonderful author, but I don't think this story is one suited for her. She breaks what I think is a cardinal rule of writing someone's biography: stay objective. It was obvious as I reached the end of the book - after some struggle - that Ms. Fischer thinks of Lilly's Jewish lover as a saint, while Lilly is portrayed as a spoiled little rich Nazi. Ms. Fischer's disdain for Lilly Wust is evident throughout the book, and she even goes so far as to say she doesn't believe that Lilly and her lover would have stayed together! She also states that she has much more sympathy for Lilly's lover than for Lilly herself. I would have thought that subjectivity had no place in Aimee & Jaguar. All in all, despite my respect for Ms. Fischer at attempting to tackle such a deep issue, this book was a profound disappointment. What should have been "A Love Story" instead comes off as a boring history lesson, and a platform for the author's grievances against the Nazis.

not what I anticipated, still worth the time
I came to the book after seeing the film a few times since it's release. Erica Fischer is not a lesbian and indeed her angle on the book is more historical. There is a distance the author keeps in reporting their feelings for one another. I got the feeling from reading the book that to focus more on the passion would perhaps trivialize the plight of Jews for Erica Fischer. The letters and quotes held great interest for me. And after adjusting to the fact that the narrative would feel a little cold and dry, I also found the backround information quite interesting. I did feel that there was a lack of objectivity on the authors part. But then we all have our particular perspective through which we see the world. Hers is as a Berlin heterosexual Jew. If you are a lesbian who has assumed the author is a lesbian and came to the book looking for a full bodied love story, there is an adjustment to make. You might want to skip the epilouge or at least brace yourself. This is the part of the book that I felt was inappropriate. Erica Fischer told me that more information has come forward since this English translation, and can be found in the later German version. This information helps further explain some of the obvious distaste she still holds for Lili. All said, this is a thought provoking book, though not a scintillating love story. I am thankful to the author for the enormous amount of research that went into this book and do recommend it.

An amazing, piquant read
The most shocking-- and delightful-- aspect of this book is its refusal to sink into our notions of the conventional love story. While involving unconventional characters, I still expected it to be a 1943 Berlin version of _Love Story_. Thankfully, it is not. There are no happy endings in any sense, as Fischer does not deify either character and refuses to expunge parts of the story that sully either Lilly or Felice. There are problems, fights, questions of motivations. After reading this book, you will remain lost in a world of "why"s and "what if"s.

Fischer provides an historical account that, unlike many, is inhabited by multi-dimensional people that both intrigue and frustrate.

One of the best books I have ever read. I can not stop thinking about it.

Blah.
Dull prose, dull action, boring intrigue, dull descriptions, plot that could have been better, and annoying hero. To sum it up: dull book.

Excellent First Novel
A brilliant idea that was well written and better constructed than most first novels. Although I agree with a couple of other reviews that the main character's lack of decision/action did get annoying at times, I think it worked well as a way to introduce the reader to multiple facets of the storyline. I think this actually could have been fleshed out more--there were long stretches of time referred to that didn't really get the amount of work I would have liked. That's really my only complaint with the novel; I would have like a bit more explanation for the different characters' natures and motivations. I found myself inferring a lot of their personality traits without much evidence for my conclusions. Nevertheless, the worst part about this book is that there is NO sequel! Or any other books by a talented author!

Definitely worth the read!

Definitely Worth Reading
I am astonished by reviews of this book claiming it is slow or dull. DeVos begins this novel with an original and startling scene, and the action doesn't relent from there. While this first novel is not a perfect effort, it's well above average, and the uniqueness of the author's vision combined with her obvious skill as a storyteller make for a fast, often funny, frequently gripping, and ultimately thought-provoking read. Those looking for a predictable "category" novel may not enjoy SERAPHIM RISING, but I recommend it to anyone wishing to be entertained by something fresh.
