Benny's had enough
Benny's had enough is a wonderful book about a litle pig who doesn't want to cooperate with his mama while she is cleaning. Finally, Benny decides he's had enough. He and his dirty side-kick, Little Piggy, go out to find a new place to live. Benny realizes life on his own isn't as wonderful as he thought. My 2 year old daughter LOVES this book. (I love this book!) She relates to Benny and Little Piggy and the trials of having to clean up. The pictures are so good you can "see" what's going through Benny's head. Especially realistic is the look on Benny's face when he decides he just has to have a roll in a mudhole. Most parents can relate to trying to clean up after a little one and the struggle to clean a dirty lovey drug around by their child. Mama's response when she sees Benny returning and Little Piggy cleaned is upbeat and positive.

"Oh, Benny"
Benny's not the only one getting angry in this book, Mama is just as frustrated as all her cleaning is being sabotaged by uncooperative Benny. Benny has had enough when Mama tries to wash Little Piggy and declares "I can't live here" as he walks out the door with Little Piggy in tow. I love Benny's facial expressions of mad, happy, mischevious and finally happy as he returns home after an adventure that ends up with a clean Little Piggy.

Can't Get Enough!
This is my new favorite book. I read this to a group of preschoolers and their parents, and the adults liked it as much as the kids. It's wonderful to see a character in a picture book get frustrated and really mad! But the book is also sweet and very funny in a modern, quirky way.

The Book of Apples
A well researched book on the history of apples in England. It also includes a very large apple directory which would be especially useful to anyone interested in English apple varieties.

Best single reference on apples available
Wow! I'm an apple industry executive, and this book just became one of my bibles. I believe it is THE single best reference available on apples today. It includes comprehensive information on the history of apple growing and the apple industry, from the ancient Greeks and Romans through renaissance Europe and to the "new country" (America). It is chock full of references to apples in history, mythology/lore and religion. All this, and the most comprehensive, up-to-date directory of apple varieties anywhere. Read this book and be amazed, even if you think you know apples! This is a great reference on the industry, and should appeal equally to history buffs.

Essential for admirers of apples.
Do you have an apple orchard? Do you love eating fresh apples or cooking with apples? Would you like to understand the place of apples in our culture/history? What's the origin of "as American as apple pie?" What is Wassail and what does it have to do with Christmas? What's the big deal with apples anyway? Did you know there are thousands of varieties? This book has an index of the thousands which are kept in an English aboretum. It also has some of the most beautiful color botanical plates I have ever seen. With the artwork, the history, the scientific tables, the recipies, ...The Book of Apples would be a bargain at twice the price.

Great book with lots of content
An extremely extensive cookbook in pocket book form that is terrific. The "Joy of Cooking" for mexican food. Only drawback is the lack of pictures - but then it is a pocket book... Have to buy one for my sister-in-law who wanted to keep the copy she borrowed in perpetuity. She will get her own copy for her birthday

Best Mexican cookbook I have
Excellent recipes from all over Mexico. Easy to follow directions and explanations .

In the book she describes how she not speaking any Spanish married a UN diplomat and moved was transferred with her husband to Mexico city and how she learned to love the food and the people and explored Mexico both from cultural and regional food basis. The recipes represent the best from all the states in Mexico.

If only had one Mexican cookbook this would be the one to have. I've had my copy since the late 60's and it's almost worn out. If you buy the book take a look at one of my favorite recipes. It's Mancha Manteles de cerdo or in English Pork tablecloth stainer. It's on page 190 of my copy but the newer edition may have a different page number

Fantastic!
Please reprint I need a new one! My book is falling apart because it is used so much! Every recipe I have tried has been a success. Try the stuffed turkey the next time you cook one, what a filling

If you can't see the show...
I, too, say "Thank you" to Eva Hesse and to the people who mounted the show and produced this catalog. I went to SFMOMA to see the major Edward Weston show and spent most of my time being captured by Eva Hesse. I've been back twice for each show.

The Sixties were full of new ideas in art and most were more noisy than Eva Hesse. So, we didn't see enough of her and she really didn't receive the recognition due her in this country. This book is a small step to redress that oversight.

Eva Hess was out on a limb and her work is about as easy to show as a rainstorm. It is a measure of how good she is that the show for this catalog was done so well. This catalog is up to its task.

A very moving and thought provoking show. This catalog will help keep her delicate adventure alive and spawn more Eva Hesses. If you are lucky it will get you to the show, then back to the book to think about this very "material girl", her personal life and perhaps what you should be doing with yours.

It is worth mentioning to those who don't know Hesse's work that this current show will most likely be the last that some of her work will survive. If you want to see it, do it now.

Matter for Thought
I have just viewed a beautiful Eva Hesse retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and this book is a catalogue of that exhibit. Eva Hesse was exceptionally talanted, innovative artist, associated freely with what is described as Minimalism. She considerably expanded horizons of our thinking of modern art, introducing new textures, such as latex and fiberglass, presenting her highly original, personal vision with rare integrity and also intensity. The exhibit provides a fascinating survey of her carreer: from early Expressionist paintings to collages made from found objects to mature sculptures which challange viewers' notions of artifact, museum space and artistic performance. I think the book preserves the best experience from that show and combines it with interesting, sometimes thought-provoking essays on Hesse by observant art critics. It is invaluable as a source on Hesse, Minimalism and, more broadly, international artistic scene of the 60s, of which Eva Hesse was one of the prime, crucial figures.

For libraries featuring catalogues of modern artists
Eva Hesse was a strong figure in the development of postwar international art and created a variety of works in different mediums. While her life has received prior focus, this title provides critical attention to her art with a lavish catalogue which reveals her working methods, materials, philosophy and works: the first comprehensive examination since her last exhibition in 1972. A 'must' for libraries featuring catalogues of modern artists.

The Duke and the dressmaker --
Ah, yes. The Duke and the dressmaker -- once over that particular hurdle, however, nothing else in this delightful book is at all routine or hum-drum. It's a perfect Christmas present, with its cleverly woven tale of hidden treasures, and plum everythings!

Jane Nichol runs away from the horrendous match proposed by her step-mother, but is much better prepared for survival than most females of the age would have been. Due to the efforts of her beloved governess, Miss Godwin, Jane is proficient in both French and sewing. What more natural then, to establish herself--in heavy disguise--as Madame Nicolette, seamstress? In Bath, no less, a pleasant change from the busy London of 1819.

Madame's fashions quickly become essential to Fanny Fowler, who has become betrothed to the Duke of Chandrose, and engaged the young dressmaker to produce a wondrous wardrobe in celebration. Except that, when the marriage is called off, Fanny's father refuses to pay, leaving Jane with gorgeous clothing, and monstrous bills.

Greatly daring, Jane decides to broach the young Duke for payment, to keep herself away from financial ruin. Not surprisingly, after initially refusing to consider such reimbursements, he changes his mind, and begins to pursue the dressmaker, for a multitude of reasons. Eventually, all ends up as it should, leaving everyone--reader and characters alike--satisfied.

I think, however, the readers get much the better of this arrangement. Elisabeth Fairchild has a wondrous way with words, and each of the silver sugarplum surprises with which she decorates this confection will create a smile. A book to be savored, year after year.

Vividly detailed
Loved this book. It was so detailed the characters seemed real and very likable. I recently bought another book by Fairchild which I am halfway through and it also is so "alive" you can picture each scene vividly. Will try to purchase all her books!

A Juicy Christmas Plum of a Romance
I love uplifting, magical stories at Christmas time, and Fairchild delivers. This Cinderella style romance focuses on finding the silver surprises in her hard working heroine and hard-up hero's lives. Regency Bath comes alive in misty, mysterious beauty. Sumptuous detail, unexpected surprises, and a curly twist at the end. I bought copies for all my friends. You will too if you enjoy a lyrical tale drenched in period detail with a magical ending.

Fun, yummy desserts even teens & my husband liked!
The zucchini brownie recipe is quick and yummy! I've made several other recipes in this book, too. They're fun and real conversation starters - just don't tell 'em what's in it until after they start eating! Here's why I like the book: Great ideas, easy recipes, easy-to-ingredients. I recently made the brownies and the kids ate them up!

What a fun new way to serve vegetables
I enjoy cooking and trying new things. It is simply hard to believe the wonderous recipes that are presented in this book. We have all heard about the importance of vegetables, and this book gives a new way to "be good to yourself" while enjoying something that tastes wonderful. These desserts taste "too good to be true."

Vegetables like you've never had them (but always wanted to)
The experts are constantly telling us that we need more vegetables in our diet, but when the time comes to tell us *how* to increase our vegetable intake, they always seem short on appealing ideas. No longer! These authors saw the problem and came up with a solution... or, rather, more than a hundred solutions: vegetable desserts! This is creative cooking at its best. The recipes range from the standard use of vegetables in desserts (like Rhubarb Crunch and Maple Sweet Potato Pie) to the downright unusual (like the Kraut Crisps or the beet-based Mystery Pie). The recipes are all fully analyzed for nutritiional content, and many of them are surprisingly healthy, like the Pumpkin Tofu Pie (which, believe it or not, is the best pumpkin pie I've ever had!). There is also a lot of information about cooking and vegetables in general. This book is great for parents, vegetable fans, and anyone else who has a sweet tooth but cares about what they eat.

Good - but dry
This book is filled with wonderful facts and good information. Unfortunately, it's so dryly written you you have to practice focus just to read it. The ideals expressed go right along with basic shamanic principles, but the language is hard to escape without falling into a "dream state" if you know what I mean. So if you have the stamina and don't mind text-book dullness it's a good book for a basic undrestanding.

Delves into Shamanism and doesn't get swamped in New Age
Really wonderful book. I happened across it in my college library. It isn't a story and he isn't selling an idea. It brings to light how a person comes to be recognized as a shaman. He explores how the individual is transformed from a normal person into a shaman through a traumatic event or illness. Once the transformation is complete that person can never return to her former self or know her former and 'normal' consciousness again. Fascinating stuff.

THE Book on Shamanism
I cannot emphasize it enough, this is one of the most definitive books on shamanism available to the public at large. This book goes into extensive details about the practices and rites of Shamanism. The author writes about the indigenous religions of societies from North and South America, Africa, Australia, Indonesia, Southeast Asia, Siberia, Polynesia and Nepal. I strongly recommend this book.

Insightful!
Indonesians aren't punctual, but the Germans believe timeliness is a sign of respect. The French are well educated, but elitist. And, spouses and children don't always find living abroad to be a "grand experience." Those are just some of the things you'll learn from Dr. Elizabeth Marx, who explores why many managers have a horrible time abroad. To help improve your managerial experience overseas, she provides a 100-plus item checklist of what to do before you leave for a foreign country, including information on whether to sell your house or have your children inoculated. Her book tells the ambitious manager Everything You Always Wanted To Know About the International Experience but Were Afraid to Ask. For instance - and this isn't surprising considering her background in psychology - she tells corporations to provide psychological testing for employees before sending them to international posts. We [...] say read this before you plan your bon voyage party.

Good "handbook" for preparation of overseas assignments
A good blend of work experiences by people from all over the world with emphasis on identifying the "best practices" of preparing, working and returning from an overseas work assignment. Especially effective was the analysis of the psychological aspects of life in other countries/cultures, which included comprehensive views from both the worker and their families perspectives. Overall, the book was a fairly effective in helping me to prepare for my recent overseas long-term work assignment.

Breaking down invisible barriers to success.
Despite the praise for this book from a senior partner in Arthur Andersen which graces the first page of the text, this is an excellent management text.

As an ex Englishman near New York, one of the surprising things to learn, and thus the point of this book, is that cultural differences can affect us and our work performances.

It is often said that Britain and America are separated by a common language but this does not really convey the full extent of the differences between the two nations. The situation is made more difficult by the fact that American culture has established a hedgemony around the world and particularly so in the UK.

This book is a must read for anyone accepting a post in a foreign country and anyone relocating abroad. Indeed some of the lessons of this book can be usefully applied to different jobs not just different countries.

I like the structure of the book and in particular the focus on the book as a tool to be used and not just read. The use of case studies is very helpful although I personally do not appreciate the manner in which they are written. I would have liked some of them at least to be expressed in a more formal manner with actual references to be used where possible but this is a minor gripe.

Breaking through Culture Shock is written in a very user friendly manner and in a size that is easily followed.

Elisabeth Marx really has hit the nail on the head with this text which has a broad scope great applicability across the continents. My one concern would be with Chapter 5 where she looks at some country specific cases but which excludes Japan. Given that country's importance to business in the world one would think that it warranted inclusion.

That aside, I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about embarking on a move abroad and those who have already made a move, whether it be temporary or permanent.

Just a thought, but it would be interesting to see an American author tackle this subject in the same way.

Death Is of Vital Importance: On Life, Death, and Life After Death
Published in Paperback by Barrytown/Station Hill (December, 1995)
Authors: Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and Goran Grip
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $7.00
Average review score:

Imperfect but appealing
This is a collection of Kubler-Ross's lectures on death. Her pleasant personality comes through consistently, but her thinking here is less-than-rigorous. For example, she claims that a boy who died of a shark attack knew that he was going to die before he ever entered the water. Similarly, Kubler-Ross uses her expertise on dying as a license to lecture her readers on barely related topics such as child-rearing and everyday behavior, and to put forth comforting but vapid New Age views. I greatly admire her more scholarly first book, "On Death and Dying," but this later collection is best left to readers who are unable to process serious material.

Death Is Of Vital Importance; On Life, Death and Life after
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's compilation of talks is just stunning in its simplicity. Since the '70's I have practiced, studied, looked into spirituality and healing. She has just covered all major points on how to live with yourself and others for maximum life experience while taking you on an intimate journey of her own life's unfolding. My heart is deeply touched and this gives me even more hope for a full life lived in the present moment. It is especially pleasing to me to hear this from a medical doctor. She and Deepok Chopra are such a gift to the masses.

Helping with the Death Process
This book helped me to reaize what was happening to my loved one when he died.

I wanted to find another Kubler-Ross book but this was the only one available. This book is a collection of lectures that she gave on tour.

Even tho my loved one was an adult, the stories of how children viewed death helped me to understand that usually, a person knows when they are dying and find ways to prepare themselves for it. I could relate it to things that had happened in my loved one's life. I have shared this book with others. We felt a great sense of peace and comfort from learning how death affects the young and the old.

Especially interesting was the comforting thought of the process of death--what happens at the time death occurs. Also the hope of an afterlife.

I recommend this book to anyone facing the death of a loved one.
