Great textbook
I was assigned this book for my physical anthropology class. Overall, it's very easy to understand. THe authors explain difficult concepts well for the most part, and they usually include diagrams or pictures to reinforce the point. Granted the chapters on genetics weren't the easiest things on earth to understand, but I had a firm biology background from high school so it was not an issue. The authors also do a good job of making the concepts very interesting and alive, a difficult task for a college textbook.

Overall, it's a great book and very informative.

Great textbook
I never thought that I would enjoy biological anthropology, let alone understand it well, but this text has made the class easy and even fun (seriously, I'm not joking). The book is layed out simply with outlines at the beginning of each chapter and clear subheadings within the chapters to help get across the main points. The points are all connected together nicely to leave the reader with a complete picture of human evolution.

Good Overview of Evolutionary Theory
This book was the required text for an anthropology course I took recently. The book explained things well and actually made complex biological concepts simple to understand, even for a undergraduate. It provides a very detailed and easy to understand overview of human evolution and the biology of human culture. I would recommend this book.

A great read!
"This book, The Leap Years: Women Reflect on Change,Loss, and Love,"by Joan Shaddox Isom and Mary Anne Maier is by turns, funny and sad. Almost all the stories are well-written, but easy to read, and everyone is different. It really made me think about the kinds of events and experiences that change our lives. I would certainly recommend it.

A Treasure
What a wonderful book! There is a story in there which will touch any woman (or man) from any background in so many ways. I am of an age where I was touched in particular by two themes - aging/dying parents and menapause. Joan Halperns story of her mother's battle with cancer, was my mother's story ten years ago. Joan Isom was talking about her mother, but my grandmother will be 100 this year, and I know the feeling of not wanting to leave her to the night. And I definitely related to Tricia Lande's "menapausal madness", but I am waiting impatiently for Elayne Clift's "postmenapausal zest"! This book is a treasure!

Reader's joy
It is a reader's joy to find so many talented women writers speaking from their hearts in one book, about life's deeply personal moments. "The Leap Years" brought tears and smiles. I recommend it highly.

Me and My Amazing Body

Unbelievably simple and complete.
This book is clear and simple. It covers everything without being complicated. It is easy for kids to understand without talking down to them. I highly recommend this book!

Simply presented, medically correct, fun for preschoolers
A wonderfully illustrated explanation of how our bodies work, presented in kid-friendly language that is comprehensible and appealing to preschoolers. Simple yet medically correct discussion of internal organs, bones, the circulatory system, and more. A great book to help young children understand the complex and abstract functions that happen inside our skin, where we can't see them.

We got a lot out of this book!
We found this one in the library. It is the best book about anatomy and physiology I've seen for for the preschooler age. My girls (3 and 5) have never really understood the other books we've read on the subject, and this one just clicked for them.

My 5-year-old was so impressed by the information on nutrition that she copied the pyramid out of the book, put it up on the refrigerator, and now makes sure she's eaten the proper number of servings each day.

Excellent Choice
This book is simple yet engaging. My 4th grade students gained a deeper understanding of their location in this vast universe. They were able to follow the book's example and create their own personal map book. I believe this book should be a part of every elementary classroom.

Cute Book, helps kids put the world in perspective
I love this book. It helps kids relate the reality of their world to the world as a whole, It also helps them understand maps, which are really fairly abstract. It starts with a picture of a little girl in her room, and, on the facing page, her drawing of a "map of my room". Then it shows her house, and her "map of my house". Then the street, with the house on it, then the town, with the street on it, etc. The pictures zoom all the way out to a view of the Earth from space. My daughter loves it, and has drawn "maps" of her room, our house, etc. like those in the book

A great introduction to maps & communities for primary ages
In all my years as an elementary school librarian, this has to be the best introduction to maps that I have seen for primary grades. It is written at a 1.7 reading level, which makes it accessible to first through third grades. In our school, the third grade teachers do a unit on communities, and this title ties in beautifully with that.

I like the way Joan Sweeney starts with, "This is me" and builds the concept through "my room," "my house," "my street," and on to town, state, country and the world. Then she goes backwards until she concludes with "...everybody has their own special place on the map. Just like me."

The personal is professional
Most of what professional psychotherapists read professionally is either theory or research. Rarely are we privileged to get such insight into the personal and professional development of other therapists. In this volume, a distinguished group of mostly psychoanalytically oriented clinicians openly discuss the evolution of their beliefs about doing therapy and the sometimes subtle and sometimes radical changes they have undergone. Sometimes the personal revelations are incredibly moving as in Simon Budman's discussion of his aortic aneurysm and its effect on his understanding of what he calls "existential and spiritual issues." There are also some surpises as in Sophie Freud's confession that were she younger she would seek training in the type of solution-focused brief therapy practiced by Insoo Kim Berg. Frequently I found myself nodding with recognition as with Carolynn Maltas' struggle to integrate (apparently) conflicting perspectives such as the family systemic and the psychodynamic. Finally, I appreciated the emphasis of Lillian Comas-Diaz on the importance of understanding culture in working with clients. While the book is not representative of the entire field of psychotherapy (only Arnold Lazarus mentions cognitive therapy, for example), I think therapists of all persuasions will find this book fascinating.

Outstanding Collection
Every so often a book in my field (psychology) comes out which I believe is so outstanding I would recommend it to every professional (and layman as well)interested in, or practicing, psychotherapy today. This is such a book. Drs. Shay and Wheelis have gathered a collection of personal accounts by truly gifted clinicians who offer extradordinarily varied, articulate and moving descriptions of their personal development as psychotherapists. By selecting such a diverse group, the editors have met their ambitious goal of chronicling the process of change in the field of psychotherapy while at the same time providing depth and insight for the reader in a very personal and meaningful way. What was most appealing to me about the presentations was the compelling manner in which personal events and choices influenced not only the individual lives of these clinicians, but also the development of the field itself. By choosing this method of description, which was clearly not intended to be a comprehensive empirical review of the development of psychotherapy, the editors have provided us with what I believe is a far more significant history than such a 'clinical" approach would have. This is an outstanding book which I highly recommend.

Odyyseys
This is a fascinating look into the journeys that therapists have made into the post modern world. They have had to learn to deal with the real world, as well as with its ambiguities, the world in which they and their patients live.It is a must, for readers who value openness and honesty and who enjoy a look at the ideas of those whom we ask to help us manage our lives with comfort and dignity.

people's instructor
A wonderfully written little trip from the beginning of... well, everything right through to the ascendancy of humans. Bryson's mastery of language and his ability to turn a phrase are put to good use in taking a look at the theories and science behind astrophysics, geology, archeology, paleontology, and several other "ologies" as well. The best part is that Bryson manages to cover all this without being boring or overly breezey.
Almost everyone will find some part of this book interesting. Even if you weren't a straight A student in science class back in high school or college, the bits of science you do know are probably woven into the grander tapestry of science and time in a way you'll appreciate.

Funny and Cute
If you're feeling a little down, or just in the mood for a little laugh this is the perfect book for it. Filled with little wisdoms this book is funny and cute. They really made my laugh and some of them I could relate to. This book is filled with pictures from the old books, and if you've read them, or seen the old cartoons you might recongnize some of these senarios. One of my favorites is:

"If you are trying to find your way home, and keep finding yourself instead back at the same sand-pit, it may be that the sand-pit is following you about."

The book is filled with cute little wisdoms like that, many that are funnier. I really enjoyed the book, and I think everyone will.

The simple things in life
I thought that this book was adorable and very sweet. It's perfect for all ages and it makes you notice the simple things in life and that sometimes people make things more complicated than they need to be. Winnie the Pooh definetly has the best advice on how to live a wonderful life and realize what is really important - friendship.

Free at last
I have struggled with crack cocaine abuse for fifteen years and sought out many different forms of treatment with little or no success. After countless N.A.meetings,5 treatment centers and several private counsellors,I was unable to find a solution to my overpowering cravings. After reading 7 weeks to sobriety,I inquired about a cocaine formula which to my suprise they had.I immediatly ordered and began using the formula, which to my(and my families)amazement, began to work within 48 hours.Since that time I have not experienced a single craving for cocaine and have completly changed my outlook and behavior.I always knew there was something missing in traditional treatment and am grateful to Dr.Larson for finding that missing link.I encourage everyone who is struggling with an addiction to get a copy of 7 weeks to sobriety and follow her recommendations and I am sure you will find success as I have.

A neccessary resource for all addictions counsellors
I am a family therapist specializing in women's addictions therapy. I am the clinical director of a treatment program that admits over 100 women per year. I have also been the coordinator of substance abuse training for the past four years. Three years ago I invited all the addictions counsellors in our system of care to read "seven weeks". For most of us, the information changed our approach to early sobriety counselling. Clients who were previously diagnosed as chronically relapse prone were experiencing great success following Dr. Mathews Larson's advice. Accessing the vitamin formulas is difficult in Canada, but higher quality pharmacies are helpful in producing what clients require on an individual basis. Clients are deeply appreciative that so much of their problem is in their diets. They can change their diets without years of painful emotional therapy. It is incredibly empowering. Seven Weeks is a gift to society. Of the women who follow the "Seven Weeks" plan, more than 90% report dramatically lower incidence of depression. The combination of psychotherapy and sound bio-chemical management is a guarantee for success.

If you relapse or know a relapser,, buy this book today!
Larson's book is based on good science, clinical experience and the author's research. Even better, it works. I was sober most of the time, but didn't really feel good in my body & mind. My sobriety was difficult. I relapsed periodically for years. Following Laron's advice I killed off my cravings, cleared my mind, boosted my mood and energy level and stopped relapsing. No kidding. This book provides what AA and talk therapy do not and cannot. It's the missing link. I know many people who have been helped by Larson's book. This should be required reading for every health professional in the country.

Don't miss out ! A must read "SID", a great Romance Novel
This is one book you will hate to put down and see it come to a end. Joan Taylor did a magnificent job on creating all of the chacters and making them come to life for you. I read "Sid" two time and I enjoyed it just as much the second time as I did the first. You will not disappointed if you buy this superb book. I hope Joan Taylor will write more books like this one, she is a great author.

I was not prepared to read such a fine book. I knew it was the first book for Joan Taylor, but I had no ideal that a first book could be so good! The way the book was written, I could actually envision what the characters looked like. I literally wanted the book to keep going. This was one of the most entertaining books that I have read in a long time. Congratulations Joan Taylor.

Neighbors
Published in Paperback by Third Woman Press (1993)
Author: Joan Leslie Woodruff
Amazon base price: $11.95
Average review score:

"Neighbors" is a delightful read, thought provoking and fun.
Joan Leslie Woodruff is one of the most refreshing, original voices in current American fiction. Her books rank well in the company of such writers as Barbara Kingsolver and Amy Tan. "Neighbors" is a quirky story, humorous yet spiritually deep. The Native American sensibilities are authentic, derived from the writer's ancestry and her experiences in New Mexico. The heroine, Dana Whitehawk, moves from Los Angeles to New Mexico, where she discovers that some of her 'neighbors' are not ordinary folks. The beauty of Woodruff's tale is in the language. She explores the boundary between magic and reality, leaving readers to make up their own minds about some of the book's questions. Both comparatively short and generally upbeat, "Neighbors" is a good read for someone with a tight schedule who would like a "feel good" book. If you like this one, try "The Shiloh Renewal" -- it's topically different, but told with similar skill.

If you've ever wondered about your neighbors . . .
A hilarious and heartfelt detour through New Mexico's hinterlands. Its portrayal of the protagonist's pueblo neighbors leaves more stereotyped "colorful native characters" whimpering in the dust.

A very good read. Fun from the very beginning to the end.
Joan Leslie Woodruff writes with a voice that warms the heart and makes the reader smile. I couldn't put this book down. The characters are quirky and entertaining and the story held me in its grip from page one.
