Forest fragments in a context
This is an excellent collection of distinct approaches to the forest fragmentation process in tropical landscapes. These approaches include social economical and environmental aspects well based on case studies and scientific data. With one publication it's possible to analyze several points of view and draw an image of the tropical forest's situation.

consqentlst&positivist, good analysis X-tian moral history
Most Americans would see Lord Russell's work in ethics as viewed from the right. Russell is forthright in his consequentialism harkening all the way back to Bentham in his preferred treatment of criminals almost as irritating entities that merely need correction. From the left, I suppose he would look like a generic J.S. Mill echo chamber but with more data perhaps. He is clearly a British aristocrat which makes his view somewhat biased. Having seldomly seen what it is like among the lower classes who scramble for what they get, Russell tends to underemphasize "the rules of the game," as a more Hobbesian perspective would indicate. The book is extremely concise, given its breadth and scope. Russell has demonstrated lexical efficiency that is almost shocking, given his other works. If you major in philosophy, or if you have liberal humanist politics, the book is worth the time it takes to read. Just don't expect it to be a "be all, end all" sort of work. In other words, it is not

John Randolph of Roanoke: A Study in American Politics With Selected Speeches and Letters

One of America's great characters!
John Randolph of Roanoke, a distant cousin of Thomas Jefferson (whose mother was a Randolph), cut one of the outstanding figures in American politics in the first third of the nineteenth century. Virtually nothing in his life was uninteresting. From leader of the Republican Party in the House in Jefferson's first term as president, Randolph went to leader of a new opposition party after his notorious break with Jefferson. Later, his famous speaking style (the speeches here are worth the volume's price and more!) and acerbic wit made him the terror of administrations of both parties. His duel with Secretary of State Henry Clay is immortal, his imbroglios with the young John C. Calhoun are mesmerizing, and the story of his death fascinates. Not included here is the controversy over his will: in the end, one of Randolph's wills was probated and the other failed, with the result that Randolph freed more than 400 slaves! He also bought them land in "free" Ohio, where the natives ran them off; I don't know what became of the land (or of the Randolph money that had bought it for them). Randolph's long-standing insistence that the Yankees were hypocrites when it came to slavery and emancipation finds some support here, to say the least.

Kirk, unfortunately, has a tendency to make every conservative he admires into a bygone Russell Kirk. Randolph, for one, was not nearly so religious as Kirk would have him, and what Christianity he had was -- as one might expect -- of an eccentric variety. Still, the text here is a nice entre' to Randolph's life, and the speeches and letters are priceless. We don't have politicians of this intellectual level, or with this grasp of the English language, anymore. Nor, alas, do we have any who are so consistently, insistently conservative.

Kitchen Table Bird Book
I'm ordering my second copy of this book, this one for my six-year-old grandson. It's a book of birds native to our Michigan area with beautiful illustrations, told in an interesting fashion. He has me read to him from it, and of course always needs to know about the bugs and such that they eat. He'll soon be old enough to read it himself, and likes to try and copy the illustrations. I'd recommend it for adults and kids alike.

An eye-opening and soul searching experience
I enjoyed this book from cover to cover, and each topic in between. I read this book in just 2 days as it was hard to put down andI was eager to get to the next subject. I waspleased with the author's use scriptures as they pertained to the subject at hand, and condensing them to "layman's" terms and simple analogies. Not only a new way to think about or to view money, but a new understanding of myself, relationships with others and with God.

Penguin Dictionary of the Theatre
Concise and to the point. I have found most of the mainstream theatre genres and practisioners I have looked up in it. I must admit that some historical details are just skimmed through, accentuating only the famous works of an author or director. For a full spectrum, I find myself alternating between the Cambridge Paperback Guide to Theatre and this dictionary.

Much needed study of the heart of Christian Belief!
This is a great set of essays by some very learned and reader friendly Theologians and Scientists. Though the subject is a very weighty and complex one, the essays are understandable, to the average person for the most part. I like the fact that they take the Christian claim of Resurrection seriously, and try to understand it from a perspective of a culture shaped by Science. I do wish an essay or two would have addressed the historical questions in particular. Though the excellent essay by German Theologian Michael Welker did touch on this, in relationship to the New Testament accounts of Jesus' Resurrection. This book is one of those that brings up so many different aspects of its subject that it cries out for more studies along its same lines, of possibly more depth. Another very good essay is the one by another German Theologian, Gunter Thomas. In fact this essay was the most helpfull and interesting one for Me. He makes an excellent point of the crucial role of God's Spirit, the Holy Spirit, of Christian Belief, role in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and of our Resurrection in the Eschauton. This article makes the Spirit very tangible, in that it is the Concrete causal power behind and in all Created reality. That the Spirit is not a sort of Wraith like entity. This of course relates to all the various aspects of Christian belief about God, such as the Trinity and so forth. I highly recommend this book. I write this as just a interested laymen, but I do believe I have a much better grasp of "What" the resurrection was and is, with all do respect and humility, as to how much more we don't understand or know. Thats just how it has always been, this side of Eternity. To any who struggle with skepticism and doubts, and who doesn't, in this skeptical age, this book is a breath of fresh air, in the seriousness, with which a takes the Christian claim of Resurrection. A very rare thing thesedays, Sad to say. Thank you for reading my review. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Sincerely Richard Woodhouse Bradford PA.

Three unusual scientists : John Keely, Nikola Tesla, Walter Russell : three one-act plays

Long overdue praise of Walter Russell
Three unusual scientists : John Keely, Nikola Tesla, Walter Russell ... long overdue. These three men were indeed the greatest minds of the 19th & 20 century. Walter Russell was painter, poet, philosopher, scientist, sculptor, painter, teacher, lecturer, architect, and servant to mankind ... leader of the Twilight Club from 1895 to 1946 when it was disbanded to form the University of Science and Philosophy. The Twilight Club led to the foundation of many organizations such as the Kiwanis, Rotary, and Optimist Clubs ... the Boy Scouts of America ... Child Labor Laws ... Public Schools ... The Carnegie Library System ... and yet this man is virtually unheard of and written of very little.

Bravo, to Martha Keltz for shining light on these great men!!!!
